Weekend Box-Office: July 1-3, 2011

Michael Bay breaks more records...

Director Michael Bay and lead Shia LaBeouf both promised that the 3rd installment of the TRANSFORMERS franchise would be better than the 2nd one, and according to most critics and fans...it is. That said, nobody knew for sure if that meant more "big dollars", but apparently...it did! TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON broke the Independence Day Weekend opening record, set by SPIDER-MAN 2 back in 2004 ($88M), by generating $97M over this weekend. It also became the film with the 3rd largest global opening of all-time, behind HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE ($394M) and SPIDER-MAN 3 ($382M), having generated $372M since it opened earlier this week.

Needless to say, it also becomes 2011's biggest opening of the year, beating the latest PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN film which had opened with $90.2M earlier this summer. And speaking of the PIRATES franchise, it too broke through another impressive mark this past weekend, becoming only the 8th film in the history of movie-making to surpass the $1 BILLION mark, worldwide (surpassing THE DARK KNIGHT in 8th place, by the way...sigh). Here's that elite list as it stands right now:

1. AVATAR: $2.78B
2. TITANIC: $1.84B
3. THE RETURN OF THE KING: $1.12B
4. POTC: DEAD MAN'S CHEST: 1.07B
5. TOY STORY 3: 1.06B
6. ALICE IN WONDERLAND: 1.02B
7. POTC: ON STRANGER TIDES: 1.01B
8. THE DARK KNIGHT: 1.00B
9. HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE: 0.97B
10. POTC: AT WORLD'S END: 0.96B

For someone like me, who's been a fan of Johnny Depp since his early days with films like EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, DONNIE BRASCO, SLEEPY HOLLOW, ED WOOD and others, it's extremely bizarre to see him in 4 of the 10 highest-grossing movies of all-time! Who would have thought that a few years ago! And speaking of which, if someone can explain how the putrid ALICE IN WONDERLAND made so much money worldwide (I realize I keep harping on this, but it amazes me!), let me know in the STRIKE BACKs.

BTW, for those scoring at home, TRANSFORMERS 3's numbers are actually running below those from TRANSFORMERS 2 a few years ago, as that film had made $200.1M in its first 5 days of release, while the latest installment has made only $162M, which still places it in 9th place on the all-time 5-day opening list (TRANSFORMERS 2 sits in second place on that list, behind THE DARK KNIGHT's $203M).

What might be even more interesting to a lot of our readers in this weekend's box-office charts is the 62% drop by a Pixar movie!!! That's right, last week's #1 movie, CARS 2, lost 62% of its audience from last weekend and in turn, became the worst drop by a Pixar movie in its 2nd weekend of release of all-time! We hope that this lets Disney/Pixar know that audiences expect more from them...not just obvious money-grabs for merchandising purposes.

The Tom Hanks/Julia Roberts movie, LARRY CROWNE, that I had barely heard about -- even though I run a movie fansite! -- opened in a disappointing 4th place with only $13M, below BAD TEACHER which made $14M in its 2nd week of release. Some are saying that the film only cost $30M, so it'll definitely make its money back, but I'm not sure the studio was thinking about just "making its money back" when it decided to release it over this big holiday weekend while casting two of the biggest "movie stars" of their generation as its leads. Maybe those two shouldn't stay out of the limelight so long...

As for GREEN LANTERN, it's made $102M since its release three weeks ago, which adds up to about the same amount that TRANSFORMERS 3 made over the last three days alone! I think that says it all in terms of the film's acceptance among mainstream audiences. The three films to get booted from the top 10 this weekend included X-MEN: FIRST CLASS ($139M), THE HANGOVER: PART II ($248M) and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES ($234M), three of the most successful summer films so far.

Oh and at $153M, BRIDESMAIDS has now officially become producer Judd Apatow's highest-grossing movie ever! That beats films like PINEAPPLE EXPRESS ($87M), GET HIM TO THE GREEK ($60M), STEP BROTHERS ($100M), FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL ($63M), SUPERBAD ($121M), THE 40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN ($109M), TALLADEGA NIGHTS ($148M) and ANCHORMAN ($85M). Congrats to Judd and all the lovely ladies (and men) that made this movie what it has now become.

Next week sees the release of two medium-sized "summer releases" including HORRIBLE BOSSES starring everyone and your uncle as well as Colin Farrell, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey and many others, as well as something called ZOOKEEPER starring Sylvester Stallone, Adam Sandler, Cher, Nick Nolte, Judd Apatow (he's everywhere!), Jon Favreau, Maya Rudolph, Don Rickles and many other...voices! (that's right folks, those actors are simply the "voices" of the many animals in the film) The movie actually stars Kevin James and Rosario Dawson in human form. Have a blast. In the meantime, let us know which of the TRANSFORMERS movies was your favorite: VOTE HERE!!!

# MOVIE TITLE WKND $ TOTAL $
1. Transformers: Dark of the Moon $97.4 M $162.1 M
2. Cars 2 $25.1 M $116 M

Didn't see TF3 yet but hope too this week, still kinda hesitant after TF2 raped my brain. I will only see it if Skids and Mudflaps aren't in it.

I think people were just craving a really big summer movie, which there hasn't been much of this year.

First off just because t3 made more money than Green Lantern does not mean the film is better by any means. Anyone who says something like that is a dumbass. ALice in wonferland was actually a good film so im not surprised that made a shit ton of money i dont know anyone who didnt enjoy it. Its a classic. Finally i know that The Dark Knight Rises is going to smash all these records anyway next year. Harrpy potter pt 2 will make more records next week but it wont stay for long since The Avengers

FYI, we aren't talking about the Disney animated version. We are talking about Tim Burton's version. I liteally, swear to God, know only one person that actually liked that movie. I don't know the circles you run around in, but they make me sad.

I saw Green Lantern and there was a trailer for T3 and even though I haven't seen T3 I'm willing to concede that it looks like a better movie.

As for AiWL, it was a 3D movie that came out shortly after Avatar and a lot of people saw the trailer when they went to see Avatar. It was also a kids movie. A lot of parents overseas may have thought the Navi were too sexy for kids. So AiWL made a ton of money overseas.

but TDKR is going to have Catwoman who is as popular as the Joker and has a great appeal to female and male audience alike.
Batman Begins needed to recreate the franchise after the shumacher films and so people were skeptical.

After TDK the hype for the franchise is huge, so I think it can make at least the same money as TDK...

I don't know anyone who enjoyed ALICE IN WONDERLAND, so it's certainly not a "classic" amongst everyone.

I'm not convinced The Dark Knight Rises will make close to as much as The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight had the Joker, an extremely popular comic book villain, performed to perfection by the late Heath Ledger. It benefited from a recognizable and engaging villain. Conversely, Batman Begins, with unrecognizable villains, did not fair as well.

I don't expect TDKR to reach the levels of TDK, but it will make money and I expect that it will be a great conclusion to the trilogy.

I'm over the BS "record breaking" that happens every year. Ticket prices go up - box office scale increases; I don't care that Transformers 3 opened higher than a movie from 2004. Who would?

Still, it's dissapointing to see the 3rd Transformers movie open so well. Aren't audiences phased at all by being slapped in the face?

I didn't see it; I learned my lesson with the first movie. I don't know anyone wishing it meager success that plans to see it.

Also, if attendance is going down, but records keep being broken, doesn't that say even less? I'm glad Hollywood is staying on its feet - really - but I'll be interested in records when the scale doesn't change every six weeks.

yes i agree box office records at this point are certainly pointless, we all can guarantee more records will be broken this time next year also. At the same time its tiresome seeing people on here complain about a movie opening so big, we get it you didnt like the movie, yet you paid to see it also correct, way to contracdict yourself people.

pretty soon though, those records are gonna matter even more than they have in the past, because attendance keeps going down and down.

I know right. Can't imagine it will, as it's at around 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. I know everybody references RT these days, but it's for a reason: it's accurate. And no movie that has 30% on Rotten Tomatoes will ever win best animated picture.

Good for transformers, i'll be seeing it later this week & cannot wait, anyone surprised about the cars 2 drop shouldn't be surprised because it completely sucked, it was so damn boring even for a kids movie, this from a pixar fan.

Despite what anyone thinks of the Transformers series, the way they handled Bumbleebee was fucking brilliant. He spoke through soundbites, was like an obedient dog, and had the coolest looking design of them all.

Good stuff, the only huge summer film this year. Well done.
210+ million from international, almost 380+ mil in opening weekend. Impressive. The first two ran about 50/50 domestic vs international. With the 3D element, which the rest of the world loves more than US audiences of late, that ratio should be tipping more like 40/60 or better. Add in good word of mouth from most audience and kick ass 3D should keep this rolling for a while.
Well done to Bay, he directed the shit out of this

Actually, directors have more control over the script than you might think. For example, in the Oric/ Kurtz script for "Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen", do you know who you won't find there? Skids and Muflap. Bay added them, because he could, I guess. Also, it's the director that edits the movies, so if that was a scene explaining X, but it slows everything down, then that scene goes bye. That could leave (but not all the time) the sotry muddle and confused. A director's job is much, much

You being dumb and ignorant is the reason you got so many thumbs down.

why not list the movie that Bridesmaids beat to become Apatows highest grossing flick: Knocked Up grossed i think $152 Million.

Glad Transformers broke records, I loved it. Good for Depp, 4 of the highest grossing movies of all time, that is an insane accomplishment.

As for Chambone... the dude used one shot from Island and people are on his ass, i think that is ridiculous... he saved pry a million or so dollars (pry more).. who cares!

As for Cars 2... I guess it had to happen

I guess it had to happen eventually.. but at least Cars 2 was directed by Lasseter (Who is the founder of Pixar and director of Toy Story and the creator of basically all things Pixar) this way no first time director has to feel like they destroyed the Pixar legacy! I'm sure they will be back next year with Brave.

Why does the audience abuse themselves? This is just going to let Bay (who has made good movies) keep chruning out the lowest of the low. Dammit, sometimes I hate all of humanity.

I agree. It seems to have come to a point where talented Hollywood players have become too interested in lining their pockets then actually turning out quality work. (IE MI 4, Pirates 4, Transformers 4 etc.)

Fuck the it's cool to say i hated tf 2 people

When that movie came out a lot of people and friends i know say they liked it, then suddenly more and more people were saying theyy hated the movie even people who didnt see it were bashing it, bad story blabla, bad humor blabla, racsist robots blabla.
Even i, who liked it began to doubt, but now i see clear again. I still like it(although i know it is a far from perfect movie) and i also loved dark of the moon, perfect summer movie and hope it brings in a lot of money.

I maybe a part of the "Hate TF2 Club", but I am also a part of the "Hate TF Club". I think the first two both suck, and hard (with the second one being much worse).

While I haven't seen this latest installment, I am still baffled that any audience is asking for such banal trite.
