Weekend Box-Office: July 22-24, 2011

Jul. 25, 2011by: JoBlo

Captain America...f*ck yeah!

The film itself received positive reviews from both critics and fans alike (currently sitting at 7.4/10 on Movie Fan Central), and so it wasn't a major shock to see CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER steal the top spot away from the last HARRY POTTER movie after only one week in 1st place, but still a little surprising. There was obviously no way for POTTER to continue its record pace, as it lost 71% of its audience from last weekend, which under normal circumstances might be a major worry, but when that number comes only one week after breaking the record for biggest opening ever...it's not so bad.

And so how does CAPTAIN AMERICA compare with the rest of the superhero movies of the summer? Well, according to the stats below (opening weekend figure, followed by total in parentheses), it had the biggest opening amongst them all, and if the good "word of mouth" keeps up, may even beat THOR as the highest-grossing superhero movie of the summer. We'll have to wait and see though...

CAPTAIN AMERICA: $65.8M
THOR: $65.7M ($180M)
GREEN LANTERN: $53M ($114M)
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS: $55.1M ($144M)

As for the "other" new movie opening this past weekend, FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS, opened in 3rd place with a reasonable $18.5M, although its reviews weren't as unanimous as in CAPTAIN AMERICA's case, as it's currently averaging only 5.7/10 on the MFC. It's to note that the similarly themed NO STRINGS ATTACHED starring Mila Kunis' co-stars from BLACK SWAN and "That '70s Show" opened with $19.7M back in January. That film ended up with $71M when all was said and done though. Not sure FRIENDS will make that much, as it obviously has a lot more competition right now.

In the meantime, Michael Bay's latest TRANSFORMERS film has become Paramount International's highest-grossing movie of all-time, as it crossed the half a billion dollar mark this past weekend (it's now at $556M overall). It's to note that even though HARRY POTTER broke the record for biggest opening weekend ever, TRANSFORMERS still sits atop the 2011 domestic box-office charts with $325M as compared to POTTER's $273M. So there's still a $52M gap between them. Will be interesting to see if Potter can make up the difference in the coming weeks.

The two films to get booted from the top 10 this week were LARRY CROWNE ($34M) which may turn out to be the most "under the radar" film ever released starring either Tom Hanks or Julia Roberts, and SUPER 8 ($124M) which turned into one of the more successful "original" movies of the summer.

Next weekend sees the release of three major movies including the Steve Carrel, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Julianne Moore-starring CRAZY STUPID LOVE, as well as Jon Favreau's latest directorial film starring Indiana Jones and James Bond entitled COWBOYS & ALIENS (oh, and some chick named Olivia Wilde) and....the SMURFS. Now that it appears as though no other major film will beat either TRANSFORMERS or HARRY POTTER to the overall top spot of the summer, which of the two films do you think will ultimately end up with the summer's box-office belt? VOTE HERE!!!

Great run Super 8!

It truly was the little summer movie that could. Small budget for its pedigree of production talent and it made back almost 3x its cost domestically; nearly 4x worldwide? It bows out of the top 10 with dignity.

Did anyone else catch the "Asgard / Bifrost Bridge" easter egg in Cap'n America?

*MAJ. SPOILER ahead* Ok, During Cap & Skull's final battle in the cockpit of the bomber, After Cap breaks the machine & the C.Cube begins to go all "Ark Of The Covenent" on Skull...if i'm not mistaken...didn't it look like it had opened some sort of portal above him that looked like the "space-view" of Thor's home ASGARD which Red Skull was then "Melted/Transported" in the VERY SAME way that the Bi-Frost bridge transports people to/from the different realms?

It was just something I noticed.

It was just something I noticed. It'd be pretty cool if Skull isn't "dead" but thrown into a different universe (Asgard perhaps?) in which he can come back in a sequel? (Avengers 2 or Captain America 3)

And Joblo, about the late weekend box office report...don't worry about it dude. I'm sure there were plenty of your fellow 'Schmoes (this one included) that were doing some "recovering" of their own. HAHA!

"Captain America: The First Avenger", deserves the number one spot. It was a great movie and has become one of my favorite superhero movies of all time.

I think "Captain America" comes in second out of all of the solo "Avenger" movies right behind "Iron Man". And after seeing the "Avengers" teaser, there is no other movie I am looking forward to more than "The Avengers".

To each their own I guess. I still think DC is better than Marvel. I really wished they had connected all of their past and upcoming DC comic book superhero movies together so we could have a "Justice League" film. How cool would it be having a "Avengers" movie and a "Justice League" movie BOTH coming out in the same summer.

Really enjoyed Cap't America. Had a great supporting cast with Weaving, Jones, Tucci, and Atwell. I did feel like the fight scenes were more montages than actual fights, but other than that a solid movie.

Kinda thought Captain America would make a tiny bit more like in the 80 mil range, but still happy it finished number one, none of the comic book films were gonna make Batman or Spider-Man numbers anyway. The rest of the big movies left should still have the some legs until the end of summer since August is about the weakest for movies I have seen in years. Cowboys & Aliens will be the last big blockbuster of the summer. Wow still cant believe Bad Teacher is still making money, that movie was

80 million? Is that just a random number you're throwing out for some reason? It's the top superhero film of the year, number one movie of the week, defied left-wing critics, and is definitely NOT A SEQUEL. This is called a victory, fyi.

yeah...i agree...surr sounds like random number tossing to me too, ksebastian...by someone from that group of people who just drops out the 80 million claim when they wanna seem like they know what a big opening should come in as...80 million isn't happening for a superhero opening in this economy (not mentioning all other factors) until TDKR and or Avengers reaches it...80 million is the number people drop out to sound fashionably cool about talking movie grosses, so i've noticed.

Saw the first free showing of CA at Comic-Con and I loved it! Probably the best adapted Marvel movie to date. Glad to see it do well. And I'm interested to see how it does next week when Cowboys and Aliens rolls around.

You know what some of idiots have done talking shit about England & Potter right? I would be shocked if Potheads didn't make Potter No. again next weekend now.

Fuck Captain America by the way.

You should update the news on this. After Paramount tallied the totals today, it turns out it only maid 65.1, not 65.8, so it didn't make more than Thor on it's opening weekend.

[link]

You know, JoBlo has a lot of ads for a movie news site that gets increasingly scooped more and more by less and less worthy competition.

Here's the ball JoBlo, get on it.

You really consider a $0.7M difference in box office results a "scoop"? Wow.

The only person who can tell me what do do are my parents, so take that "ball" and shove it, dude. If you don't like the site, go somewhere else, but stop trolling these parts like a fuckin' know-it-all who can't deal with a $0.7M difference in our box-office charts. I WISH I had your concerns in my life.

As for the ads, re-read this and keep shit like that out of our STRIKE BACK sections: [link]

Relax, my opinion is just my opinion, not necessarily a fact and Joblo, no, this isn't what I would choose as my personal choice for you guys being scooped, it's just the latest and the reason I point it out was because this news came out before yours did and it was still behind. I've been coming here a long time for news and I've recommended the site to more people than you know. But it hasn't been my only source for entertainment news in years. Now don't get me wrong, I still enjoy the site. I like the layout and I've always liked the volume of info here. The time when I started viewing the site negatively started when you came in with that article threatening to ban anyone who insulted your staff. At the time it didn't matter to me since I didn't have anything bad to say but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Since then, I've seen the tone, not the quality of the news here fall. I'm not the only one to say so either and you know that. Nobody want to see an article about a film they were waiting on and then read 7 different slurs against the film or franchise by the author of the article.

As for the ads post, I've read that and you need to see the difference between a troll and a dissatisfied consumer.

However, when the owner of a site starts insulting his readers because they hit on topics that are sore for him, that is indeed when I exit stage left. I've been reading you for years Jo and I've never seen you get this stressed out over something stupid someone said in the Strikebacks. It's just a website man, don't let the thing eat you alive.

However, for you TeamZissou, grow up man. what are you, five? Did a grown man really just go after my name?! Also, your sarcasm only shows you in a bad light, not me.

You didn't "strike a nerve" or anything else you're saying below. You just acted like an asshole and so I replied like an asshole. If you dish it out, you better be prepared to take it.

You obviously didn't read our RULES or that link well enough, because we've repeated this 1000 times over the years. This section is to comment on the NEWS ARTICLE, not to "give us orders" or to let us know how you think our competition is doing, nor our ads (3 things you did in your original post).

If you wanna stick around, stop acting like a prick and everything will be well in the world again.

This isn't the first time you've acted this way, hence my replies getting more stringent.

You just don't seem to "get it". If you want to continue this conversation EMAIL ME DIRECTLY (again, something I've repeated 1000 times), because all other such replies by you WILL BE DELETED.

This is a private website with rules which you don't seem to understand, even though you're a 36-year old parent.

As for this being "just a website" and not to let it "eat me alive"....dude, seriously, WTF are you babbling about?? ;) I LOVE MY SITE and just spent a full week in San Diego with many in our crew and heard NOTHING BUT AMAZING THINGS said about the site from fans who have the balls to come up to our faces and speak to us like human beings, not trolls behind their keyboards telling me to "get on it" like I'm his servant or something.

PS: The fact that you thought us "banning someone for insulting a member of our team" left a "bad taste in your mouth" says a lot about what type of person you are. And yes...PLEASE exit stage left and don't return. We want folks here who are here to DISCUSS MOVIES, not take potshots at our crew or tell the founder about other sites supposedly "scooping" us over a $0.7M discrepancy (interesting how you avoid my main retort about that)

Good riddance, bro.

And THAT, my friends, is why Joblo.com is one the most bad-ass movie news sites on the web. Berge, (as Lester Burnham once said to one Ricky Fitts)...I think you just became my personal hero. :)

This exchange between the awesome & the uninformed reminds me of the whole Alamo Drafthouse Texting / Angry Voicemail debacle a few months ago.

"Please!..and Thank You!"

Bravo, Joblo, for sticking to your guns!

"It's just a website man." I usually don't feed trolls, but what a frigging audacious comment among many others. If you have been here for years, you should know that JoBlo has dedicated the past 13 years with "blood and sweat" to provide us movie fans with the most HONEST movie site on the web. It's good you are leaving because I think you are due back in boystown.
