Everybody jumps for 21 Jump Street!

Updates of 80s material don't always turn out for the best (witness the recent $25M summer opening for THE A-TEAM movie), and swapping out Johnny Depp with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum for a new 21 JUMP STREET (which, like THE A-TEAM, also came from prolific TV guy Stephen J. Cannell) wasn't exactly a surfire idea.

But the R-rated comedy (by the directors of CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, strangely enough) took aim and hit just the right spot. Along with some solid reviews, the movie rounded up $35 million on its opening weeked as Tatum's romance THE VOW makes an exit from the Top 10 (after collecting $121M total). Hill must also be elated with the success since he co-wrote the story and exec produced, and his last R-rated comedy THE SITTER got rejected at theaters just a couple of months ago.

While Dr. Seuss' THE LORAX continues to dance happily through the rescued trees while counting mad stacks (another $22.8M and a $158.4M three-week total), things are starting to look grim for JOHN CARTER. Disney's displaced hero lost more than half of its opening business with $13.5M, and at this point it doesn't seem like word-of-mouth is going to help it get anywhere near its $250 reported production budget. If last week's poll is any indication, many of you seem to think the mishandled marketing was the main contributing factor among a combination of problems.

Everything else on the chart was a skirmish in the low seven figures. Eddie Murphy's latest loser A THOUSAND WORDS somehow held on better than the low-budget spooker that beat it last week (SILENT HOUSE already disappeared off the list). SAFE HOUSE holds its position from last week, while JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND actually climbed up a couple of slots. That one's nearing in on the $100 million mark domestically, but has already crossed $200M overseas.

A Spanish-speaking Will Ferrell stuck his cowboy-hatted cabeza into the Top 10 with his experimental comedy CASA DE MI PADRE, bringing in $2.2 million on just 382 screens. Other new limited releases didn't make quite that impression, with the Ed Helms/Jason Segel comedy JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME pulling in around $850K on 254 screens and the Nic Cage thriller SEEKING JUSTICE getting mostly ignored with a measly $260K on 231 screens.

Next week has but one major release, the anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins' young adult book THE HUNGER GAMES. The only other notable release is the lauded Indonesian actioner THE RAID. How much do you think THE HUNGER GAMES will make over its opening weekend? VOTE HERE!

It's not that JC was bad...

It just had a horrible ad campaign. The star is severely underrated and the ads made it look mediocre. This was a movie made to sell toys to kids. If this was made for the right reasons by someone like Peter Jackson, it would be a box office hit.

Now if you are 16-26 years old what are you going to want to see? The hard R comedy 21 jump street or the movie that looks like prince of persia in space? If a kid (or parent) has a choice between Lorax and John Carter, Lorax will win hands down.

Don't rob me of Princess of Mars.

Yeah I've seen John Carter three times already in hopes of a sequel. If that piece of shit "The Last Airbender" did well overall covering budget costs and whatnot, I hope John Carter does the same.

Yes I agree with Drumphantom below. Please go see John Carter........ OF MARS. It is a great movie and needs support otherwise these types of films will die and then all we will ever get is CRAP like Tyler Perry. Just because it received poor mishandled marketing doesn't make it a shit movie it just means the marketing team should be shot. Once again PLEASE go see this film.

I saw Friends With Kids and John Carter last week and enjoyed both very much. Wish John Carter was doing better because I would love to see a sequel.

Will be seeing Jeff, Who Lives At Home and 21st Jump Street this week. Can't wait.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked '21 Jump Street,' it was a good comedy. What's pissing me off right now, though, is the fact that everyone seems to have reviewed 'John Carter' in regards to the budget and marketing campaign, which were both poorly handled, and ignored the fact that it was a good film. In as much as Disney bungled this film, it was the critics who put the nail in the coffin with their bandwagon mentality.

The tone of 21 Jump Street is what non-existent newest Beverly Hills Cop installment wishes it could be...If the Bev Hills Cop camp could get their shit together...watching 21 would be a good starting point to sit down and take a look at what's being done and what can be successful...and the hard R rating that works so well here...the newest DIE HARD is gonna wish it went balls out like 21 did, when all is said and done, and tagged itself hard R as fuck, too...

21 Jump Street is the definition of surprise hit. I generally hate Jonah Hill and I've never seen a Channing Tatum movie - save for his blink and you'll miss it "cameo" in Public Enemies- and boy was I blown away by how hilarious this guy is. His interactions with Ellie Kemper were the balls! 21 Jump Street is thus far the best movie of 2012 and totally deserving of kicking John Carter's mismanaged ass!

Sad to see John Carter doing so poorly at the BO, because I really would have loved to see sequels. And even if it does well internationally it will never be enough to justify one. THANK YOU DISNEY'S MARKETING TEAM OF ASS HOLES !

Left a bad taste in my mouth after I saw this...

This movie is perfect for the "Unpopular Opinion" article, get ready for it in the future. If you thought Bridesmaids was overhyped then get ready for this movie to get old fast. haha

Last year was so bad for comedies that I think we are desperate for anything that will make us laugh, even if that means rehashed jokes like getting "shot in the dick" jokes. It was done to death in South Park.

US audiences love Michael Bay, Tyler Perry, and now add Channing Tatum!! Great for you guys (sarcasm). At least in my country John Carter is a hit. And SEEKING JUSTICE was released last year here and did ok.

Nicholas Cage had a new movie released this weekend, seriously???

Glad that R rated comedies are still box office hits!

I thought 21 jump street would have some competition when it was up against a Will Ferrell movie. They were both pretty funny films nevertheless. My money was not wasted.

To be fair, John Carter is doing quite well overseas, so it won't end up being such a big flop.

I was expecting regurgitated crap, but 21 Jump Street turned out to be one of the best comedies in a while. And would've thought I enjoyed Channing Tatum in a movie for once. "Fuck Science!" XXXDDD

Favorite movie of the year so far

21 Jump Street was fantastic! Not only did it include some hilarious, raunchy humor, which I'm a fan of, but it also had a good story to tell and I actually cared about the characters and the situations. Hill and Tatum (who was surprisingly great, I might add) both had amazing chemistry and really carried the whole movie. Glad to see it's doing well.
