Weekend Box-Office: March 23-25, 2012

Mar. 25, 2012by: Dave Davis

The Hunger Games has a feast!

And the winner of the games and current box office champ -- from District 12, the Girl on Fire, Katniss Everdeen!

There was certainly an expectation that THE HUNGER GAMES could be the next TWILIGHT-sized franchise... and any doubts were completely slaughtered this weekend as the movie opened to a gluttonous $155 million!

That three-day domestic take, which includes the record-setting midnight screenings, marks the biggest March opening ever (especially compared to this weekend last year when DIARY OF A WIMPY KID 2 topped the chart with just $21.5M), and puts THE HUNGER GAMES behind only HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS Pt. 2 ($169M) and THE DARK KNIGHT ($158M) for all-time best opening weekend, just ahead of SPIDER-MAN 3 ($151M).

Aside from that voracious North American box office chowdown (which is effectively twice the production budget earned back in one weekend), Lionsgate's movie also opened in overseas markets to nearly $60M, making its three-day worldwide total $214M.

And although THE HUNGER GAMES actually has little in common with the oft-compared TWILIGHT series besides some teens and an ostensible love triangle, this first adaptation of Suzanne Collins' dystopian future young-adult novels got a stronger start than anything in the TWILIGHT franchise (NEW MOON opened highest to $142M), making for some jealous sparkly vampires.

All that attention on post-apocalyptic teenage carnage still wasn't too painful for 21 JUMP STREET, as Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum put up a decent fight for second place and $21.3M, a respectable 41% drop from its #1 opening thanks to some positive word-of-mouth. Dr. Seuss' tree-saver THE LORAX is also still in the top 3 after a month in release with another $13.1M and a $177.3M total.

Things get ugly after that, with JOHN CARTER displaying heroism on Mars but still desperately gasping for a breath on this planet. SAFE HOUSE and JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND are still in business after seven weeks on the chart, and the indie faith-based pro-life drama OCTOBER BABY took advantage of the low totals to slip onto the list at #8, with $1.7M on just 390 screens. Yep, John "Bo Duke/Pa Kent" Schneider has a movie in the Top 10. Outside the chart, Sony's limited release of the Indonesian action flick THE RAID: REDEMPTION cracked some heads at 14 locations for $221K and the highest per-screen average besides THE HUNGER GAMES.

Next week brings some new contenders with Tarsem Singh's candy-colored version of the Snow White fairy tale MIRROR MIRROR, while Sam Worthington returns to kick the asses of CG monsters in WRATH OF THE TITANS and the hockey comedy GOON hits faces in limited release. What did you think of THE HUNGER GAMES? VOTE HERE!

The Hunger Games is the only movie in the TOP 20 Opening Weekends of all time that is neither a sequel nor a long-standing property like Spiderman or Alice in Wonderland. And its the only non-sequel in the Top 10.

I think I might check this bad girl out now.

IF the HG proved anything...

is that this summer season is gonna be record breaking. A movie with mainly unknowns beating spiderman 3???.... Watch what happens when established franchises come to play ( I'm looking at you Avengers, Men in Black, and Dark Knight)

Plus...if the first movie made this much and word of mouth is good....I'm seeing a better record breaking weekend coming with Catching fire.

Great movie btw, deserves all it's hype.

I think you can cross the new Spidey reboot off the list, ya it will most likely make some money, but the buzz for it is seriously worrisome. Some schmoes on here even said they forgot it was coming out.

Also is it me or has marketing movies this year been lackluster so far?

Next !

Ok, I haven't seen the film. But that is an IMPRESSIVE take at the box office (even moreso for a film that is NOT in 3D and that is apparently pretty solid). Who would have thought ?

Based on this piece of info though, don't you gals and guys reckon that maybe Prometheus, surely The Avengers and most certainly TDKR should produce Gazillion $ opening weekends ? I'm calling 180 M$ from TDKR.

Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers are sure to be gigantic hits, but I don't think Prometheus will be that huge. Don't get me wrong, I want to see that film fucking badly, but it doesn't have the same following as those other properties.

Surely The Avengers & TDKR will open massive but not Promethus thats for sure.

I wonder if they will consider The Avengers a sequel or a stand alone film?

The Wisdom of Sylvester Stallone

For those of us who were wondering "why the hell has Liam Hemsworth been cast in The Expendables 2?!?!", here's the answer. Sly's a smart guy.

I think he just cast him because he was Thor's brother, not just cause he anticipated the Hunger Games being absolutely huge lol

I really don't think Hunger Games was shot when Sly made his choice... seeing as Sly had already cast mini-Thor in the first Expendables movie, before having his part cut out of the movie, then he wrote a part for him in the sequel... so he cast him/chose him way before the Hunger Games came around.

No. Not well deserved. This film will be the death sentence to creative vision.

I beg, if you have the money to see something as low in quality as this, go see something like The Avengers or Prometheus four times opening weekend.

Oh yes I'm sure because of all the shit that we have gotten over the years a great franchise like the Hunger Games series is going to be the end of creative vision. How about remakes and unecessary sequels? Or found footage films? Or Disney concert films? Get over the fact that John Carter bombed because it was it couldn't market itself to a reasonable audience. The Hunger Games was great and I'd pay for it 2 more times if I wanted too.

Someone mentioned earlier that since THG made this much money this early in the year, a lot of summer movies will be even bigger. I will not say so. THG making this much money proves that release dates don't matter. If an audience is interested in a film, they will see it regardless of the release date. As for the film itself, I saw it twice already. Although I have to admit that it's not the perfect adaptation (I've read the book), it's an incredibly strong and commendable effort from the

It deserves the success it receives. Hopefully, the sequels will be just as good because the quality of the series unfortunately get lower with each successive book.

Cool for Hunger Games, will be checking it out tomorrow & I will be reading the books soon as well. Really don't get the comparisons to Twilight, but that's todays norm is comparing one medium to the next.

Its being compared to Twilight because it was made with the same level of decision making. An example, lets make a cheap film, cater it towards kids, eliminate any real value, and spend a shit load of money to market it to those kids, all of which are too young to have actually seen the better films this one blatantly rips off.

wow, spot on! You are 100% correct. It's really sad to say but it's unfortunately the case. Too bad too many people still don't understand what an opinion is, especially on something like a movie, and how it's no more wrong or right than the next guys' -- regardless if you agree or disagree with it.

Yeah, I wasn't as crazy about it as everyone else but still think it's not bad at all. I definitely don't think the book or the movie deserve this much Hype though, it's really weird how hardcore the fans are, the story isn't that intriguing. Everybody that I know who loves it hasn't seen Battle Royale or even knew that film existed so that could be a huge part in the fan base.

Not saying that it's a better movie, just that to most people this is a brand new story they may be experiencing.

Not saying that it's a better movie, just that to most people this is a brand new story they may be experiencing. The only problems with the film would be Peeta's character, the camera work, and the lack of romance and real emotion between the two leads.

The best parts were almost every scene with Woody Harrelson. He surprised me, I didn't know how he was going to play the character but he did it perfectly. He was badass and funny at the same time.

I have read all three books in the "Hunger Games" series and can tell you that it is by far a superior story than Battle Royale. And yes, I have seen the Battle Royale movie.

Do not read the below unless you've seen Battle Royale movie.(SPOILER)

The "Hunger Games" world that Suzanne Collins created actually did a great job of building each of the main characters before they were thrown into the game. I did not give a flying fuck for any of the characters in Battle Royale. I wanted to

I did not give a flying fuck for any of the characters in Battle Royale. I wanted to see Beat Takeshi blow each and every one of there squealing brains out before the games even began (The intro scene was laughable.) BR had absolutely no substance whatsoever. Since I've read that the Hunger Games movie does not have the violence which was conveyed in the book makes it bad compared to BR fans or that the BR fans say Suzanne ripped it off. If anything, Suzanne made it better.

Damn.... this is goddamn insane. I was projecting $70 million, but $150 million??? Makes me want to check out the book itself. I'm pretty sure I'll be checking this out in the coming weeks eventually. The only thing that sucks about this week, is that The Raid was not anywhere near my hometown of Seattle. This was the movie I was most hyped about this week. Hopefully, Sony will expand this to more locations, with its solid per-screen average.

Good times.....

I enjoyed the Hunger Games and thought Jennifer Lawrence was terrific. While not terribly original in story it did have style and was entertaining throughout. If your looking for something similar but more over-the-top check out The Running Man; if you want more violence and gore check out Battle Royale.

This WILL be a big year for blockbusters. You have at 3 more movies that could equal or top what Hunger Games has done in Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, and The Hobbit. Not to mention Amazing Spiderman, Men in Black III (it'll make money) and the vapid, texting legions that will inevitably flock to the mercifully last Twilight movie.

John Carter Prefered

watched John Carter last nite. It shouldn't be this low on the list. I like it very much..At least its way better than Immortals 10 folds.

Hunger Games - another bit romantic & kiddo movie. Well, i'll just it comes out on DVDs or Bluray for rent.

Glad to see this. This was a tween movie that actually deserved the money it got. Glad to see this doing better than Twilight. The sooner everyone can forget that series the better. And for the naysayers, maybe you think the film is trash, but at 85% on RT and with the gigantic box office this film made, it would seem that both critics and audiences disagreed with you. Too bad, so sad.

Remember a time when a $40 million opening was considered craziness? We're only 3 months into the year and already movies are breaking and setting box office records left and right. So this is what they meant when they said "Go Green".

I remember when X-Men opened with a little over $50M, I couldn't believe it. But I think the box-office system is obsolete, it should work with the amount of tickets sold, just like in Europe, that way you could really compare movies of today with movies from 30 years ago, to actually see which one was the bigger hit.

Shame no one is seeing it or talking about it. One of my favorites of the year.

I'm gonna be honest, the first trailer did nothing for me and I wrote this off as another tween sort of movie but when the reviews piled up my interest peaked.

After checking it out I've gotta say that the substance is there and the social commentary on our violent, viewer demanding nature is pretty on point. The performances were inspired, Lawrence gave her heart and soul and there weren't too many moments of cringe worthy dialogue or tweeny love nonsense. This is not, I repeat NOT on

Glad for HUNGER GAMES, the film deserve a success, although maybe not such a huge one...
Sad for JOHN CARTER... Have you heard the rumours saying this movie was used as an excuse to fire lots of people, almost like they'd intended this movie to bomb and hired all the people they wanted to fire on the film on purpose...
Knowing how this business works, could it be THAT far from the truth ?

Most of the 'Twilight' comparisons are actually meant as contrasts, i.e. people who dig Hunger Games but HATE Twilight. Preferring instead the positive role model heroine over Bella, who if she were a Hunger Games character would be banging one of the wannabe 18th century French aristocrats.

John Carter was a superior film

This... this was crap. Lazy writing, horrible editing, shit cinemaphotography, and the effects were on par with a Sy-fy original movie.

How in the hell did it bring in 155 million dollars? This is an atrocity.

Filmmakers, listen up. You can kiss your creative vision goodbye. From here on out it will be dictated by the MPAA PG-13 rating, and blatant rip offs of the works that once inspired you.

Please, for the love of God, support the greater films on the horizon. Go see Prometheus,

John Carter was a great film! Not saying Hunger Games is crap. It's just that John Carter should have made the same amount of money that Hunger Games made this opening weekend.

Calm the fuck down! We get it. You didn't like the film. Does it mean it's the end of creativity ? NO. Not at all. You are over-reacting. That's ridiculous. I haven't seen the film, don't care about it, though I'll probably see it some day. But I'm sure there are worse movies out there. You believe in the end of the world if that was the only type of movies that made money, but it's not the case. Movies like this keep studio alive. So now shut the fuck up and go cry somewhere else.

Not Drinking This Rancid Kool-aid

I walked out of the theater dumbfounded...at how such a sub par, obvious, and B O R I N G piece of 'tween Literature' gets such raves. I have no problem with Ms. Lawrence, or some of the other actors involved, they did their jobs and did them well. This website accuses John Carter of having ' pacing issues' and totally ignores the whole sections of this film that come to a Roaring Standstill? Let's see...Mix in one part Metropolis, One part Lord Of The Flies, a healthy dollop of the Running

Let's see...Mix in one part Metropolis, One part Lord Of The Flies, a healthy dollop of the Running Man, and you get this tripe. Also...For a film that was touted to be ' grounded' , or ' realistic', how is it that our heroine gets magical assists when things get bad? I buy that in Harry Potter because you are in a ' magical world'....Here? that's called ' lazy writing'. The fact this piece of crap made that much money doesn't suprise me at all. Its called ' built in audiences, and they'll blindly flock to the adaptations to come as well. All I know is I enjoyed John Carter a whole lot more than this plodding paint by numbers ' film'... and wonder if this website can be trusted for any even handed or balanced critiques. Boggles my mind. Oh well...at least they won't get my money for the followups.

Although I'm glad

I must say I'm happy this beat Twilight bullshit, but still.....Is this really a movie that deserves that much praise? 155 Million for this? I really don't see the appeal (books aside) for this movie.

Box-office gross and praise aren't the same. Transformers made tones of cash.

SO....

This movie isn't really anything new or amazing. It was missing alot of WOW OMFG moments for me. Nothing that really amazed me and made me go oh thats amazing. The people in this movie seemed straight out clockwork. The whole future thing has been done so many times. It reminded me very much of caprica, even the ships had a BSG feel to them. And the fighting wasn't violent at all. LOL I've seen more violence in TV shows. Granted it's PG-13 but still show some gore, not just ketchup spraying

Coolest scene was when that kid got his necked cracked. And why was everybody crying when RUE died? It's the hunger games your bound to die sooner or later. I never read the books but after seeing this I think I am, heard they are way better. Battle Royal is still much better. Was expecting a whole lot more.

Good News/Bad News

This is good news for those of us who enjoy seeing movies where they belong, in the theaters. Bad news for film lovers as this looks like another Fast food film franchise that will stink like shit in about 3-4 years, maybe less. To think we used to have films like The Godfather, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders, TDK, do well and also be classic films. This movie will go the way of the dodo and be remembered as a guilty pleasure but no real substance, just like the Twilight films.

"Anyone with intelligence" clearly doesn't include you. Can't you get more creative than "fuck you" or did even that strain your limited intellectual capacity? Don't hurt yourself trying to answer now.

This right here is the real definition of a troll.

Yes & insulting people is certainly the highest form of showing intelligence.
