Weekend Box-Office: May 25-28, 2012

May. 28, 2012by: Dave Davis

Men in Black are (modestly) back!

(NOTE: Box office estimates are for 4-day holiday weekend)

After a decade since their last planet-saving mission, eerily ageless megastar Will Smith and a seemingly unenthusiastic Tommy Lee Jones reunited for MEN IN BLACK III. And while the PG-13 flick (which also pulled Josh Brolin into the timestream as a young Agent K) can take credit for being the one to finally topple THE AVENGERS from the #1 spot, it wasn't packing quite the A-list wallop you might think.

The 3D sci-fi comedy collected $70 million from neuralyzed audiences over the long Memorial Day weekend ($55 million over the three-day period), which was certainly sufficient to shove Marvel's superheroes down a notch on their fourth week in theaters. But that opening is still below the $100M holiday take that the studio craved, and even far beneath the conservative early $80M-90M expectation. Although if the JoBlo readership is in any way indicative of the general population, it's not surprising considering the results of last week's poll...

After DARK SHADOWS and BATTLESHIP's meek openings, this makes the third downtrending megabudget summer tentpole in a row post-AVENGERS to premiere with soft figures (MEN IN BLACK III's budget may be nearly $300M, depending on who you believe). Its three-day $55M take is just a noisy cricket higher than MEN IN BLACK II's $52M opening in 2002 and the first MEN IN BLACK's $51M debut (both over 4th of July weekend), but below Smith's last two big movies -- I AM LEGEND made $77.2M its first weekend in December 2007, and HANCOCK opened with $62.6M in July 2008.

While American crowds didn't necessarily warm to the dapper operatives' latest alien-fighting adventure in overwhelming numbers, MEN IN BLACK III is having no trouble getting attention from international audiences -- the movie has made more than $130M overseas, putting its global total past $200M already. The first MIB ended up with $589M altogether, while MIB II gathered $441M worldwide.

Meanwhile, on the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier... THE AVENGERS continue to set records, this time crossing the half-billion domestic total in 23 days, passing the previous title-holder AVATAR (which took 32 days to make that figure). The Marvel warriors rounded up another $46.8M during the four-day stretch ($36.7M on the three-day), putting its domestic haul at $523.5M as it hits a $1.3 billion global total. What's next, Joss?

As BATTLESHIP, THE DICTATOR and DARK SHADOWS continue to struggle for eyeballs, the weekend's other new release CHERNOBYL DIARIES only generated $9.3M over the long weekend. The low-budget horror movie (written and produced by PARANORMAL ACTIVITY guy Oren Peli) also got branded with a dreadful D+ CinemaScore from irradiated paying audiences.

As for the blockbuster counterprogramming, WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING had just a 32% drop from last week, while THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL expanded onto more than 1200 screens and saw a big boost from the elder crowds. THE HUNGER GAMES is still clawing its way to $400M, and outside the Top 10, Wes Anderson's MOONRISE KINGDOM opened in just four locations but had a whopping $167k per-screen average (that's ten times MIB3's per-screen).

Next weekend brings another big-budget release, the epic fairy tale fantasy SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, while the boobs-and-gore sequel PIRANHA 3DD opens in limited release. What June release are you most looking forward to seeing? VOTE HERE!

Dude, Come on! MIB3 did rather great!

I don't know what you're smoking, but nobody, I mean NOBODY with their right mind expected MIB3 to hit 100M this weekend, or even 80-90M! It is a francise that is 10 years too old and with a star who didn't have any new movies last 3 years, not to mention all the bad buzz surrounding not having a script or what not....Yeah, any other summer it'd make a moderate noise in pre-release expectations, but this summer, not so much. I don't think it was even on anyone's top 10 watchlist this year! But

But even after all these indifferentness, MIB3 still made 55M in 3 days with a healthy 68% rating on rottentomatoes, which IMO is a great start for a series whose last installment really left a bad taste in everyone's mouth, 12 fregging years ago! Lets give a little credit where credit's due, moreso after seeing the miserable collections of BATTLESHIP or DARK SHADOWS...

Any other summer a MIB movie would be a big deal. Not this summer. Not even a Spiderman film is getting hyped. Nope, this summer is all about three movies. Avengers, Prometheus, and The Dark Knight Rises. If your movie is titled anything different, expect a lower than anticipated box office. Maybe GI Joe knows what it is doing.

I'm not sure I would put Prometheus in that group. In fact, the R rating might actually put it below Spider-man in total revenues, although I expect a very strong opening.

I'm glad MIB3 did well. I just saw the film and was surprised it was good. Sometimes, far too many summer films focus too much on the effects and action scenes. MIB3, however, focuses on the characters. While MIB3 won't go in my top 10 of 2012, it's a damn good sequel nobody ever expected to be any good after the horrible MIB2. Despite the troubles during production, MIB3 somehow gets it right. It's a rare threequel that actually doesn't suck.

Sony should be happy there getting they're still pulling $55 million, considering the last MIB was a generation ago, and that MIB2 wasn't so good either. What the fuck else do you expect??? Guess that spending $300 million on what should have been medium-budget movie wasn't such a hot idea.

Despite all that, MIB3 wasn't that bad. The chemistry between Smith and Brolin worked, Jermaine Clement was fun as the main baddie, and it ended on a pretty heartfelt note, too.

MIB was one of those movies I saw even before I was a teenager, so it holds a sort of childhood sentimental value for me. I really hope it does well enough to NOT be a financial flop in the long run. As for Avengers, I couldn't be happier to see it continue to do so well. I've seen it five times and will probably see it two more times to show support.

I'm an MIB fan, I enjoyed this movie (except for the mega lame Pitbull track that closed it out). I still root for the Avengers and this weekends haul was nothing to bark at, by Tues it will have topped Dark Knight as the 3rd highest grossing film and to do that in under a month is still impressive. If Avengers makes 20 mill every week until Aug it will beat at least Titanic and I seriously hope that happens. The Summer is indeed my favorite time for movies and it makes box office news more

I really hope Avengers becomes the most grossing movie ever. It deserves every piece of recognition it has been getting.

Glad to see Avengers still kicking ass every week. I have seen it three times already and will probably see it two more times before it is out of theaters.

I'm glad MIB wasn't a flop. I just saw it today, and it was a lot better than I was expecting, except for the villain, who was just terrible. Will Smith still has his box office charisma!

As other people have said

MIB 3 did very well. The fact that it didn't flop suggests that it doesn't suck and that means that it might be #1 next weekend too.

Saw It Saturday...

It killed 1-1/2 hours on a weekend with no competition that we hadn't seen. My wife still isn't sure if she liked it or not; I'm still neutral on it.

I usually respect one's opinion, but this is one of the most idiotic things I have ever read. There is NO WAY in hell MIB 3 comes close to the far superior Avengers. See how much MIB3 dies at the box office in a few weeks.

Totally agree. MIB 3 didnt feel forceful with its audience and just asked the audience to have a good time. It was fresh and new and didnt feel re used, a worthy sequel.

@The_Soloist You say that you respect one's opinion and then tell him that his opinion is wrong? I don't think that you understand the definition of the word "opinion".
