Weekend Box-Office: November 25-27, 2011

Nov. 27, 2011by:

The Twilight Saga defeats The Muppets!

The Thanksgiving holiday weekend may be the time for family gatherings, but the trio of new family-friendly movies wasn't as appealing to crowds as supernatural guys and unnatural delivery -- in its second week, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN (PART 1) easily beat the premiering THE MUPPETS, ARTHUR CHRISTMAS and HUGO.

Over the three-day weekend, BREAKING DAWN (PART 1) collected $42 million ($62M over the 5-day stretch), for a total of $221M after ten days in release. Alas, our felt friends THE MUPPETS (who I clearly overestimated) made their big return but landed in second with $29.5M (and $42M since its Wednesday release). But Kermit and company should feel pretty cheerful anyway -- the movie reportedly cost $45M, and will surely be strong for the weeks between now and Christmas.

Same for newcomer ARTHUR CHRISTMAS, which only shoveled $12.7M ($17M through the 5-day) -- not even enough to rise above last week's new CG 'toon HAPPY FEET TWO, which danced away another $18.3M over the extended holiday box office weekend. But like THE MUPPETS, Aardman's ARTHUR should play well until the next holiday.

The other new release, Martin Scorsese's well-received 3D effort HUGO, performed admirably considering it opened in a third the amount of theaters as BREAKING DAWN. The adaptation brought in $15.3M since Wednesday, with a per-screen average nearly that of HUGO's colorful competitors THE MUPPETS.

Elsewhere on the chart, JACK AND JILL, IMMORTALS, PUSS IN BOOTS and TOWER HEIST each rounded up another 8 figures over the 5-day, while George Clooney continued to be a commanding presence as THE DESCENDANTS expanded to 433 theaters and caught another $9.2M (with the highest per-screen average in the Top 10). Not hitting the list but still notable was the Weinsteins' limited release of MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, pulling in $2M at 244 theaters.

Next week continues the same battle -- BREAKING DAWN should keep plunging as the TWILIGHT series tends to do, but without any other new wide releases, THE MUPPETS, ARTHUR CHRISTMAS and HUGO should get a second chance to get the attention of families who were too busy eating, drinking, fighting and/or traveling during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Considering theater average, Hugo didn't do too bad, it actually did better than The Muppets. I'm glad it made more than what was expected. I hope it has legs, it's a great movie. I saw it opening night at the 10pm showing and there was no one else in the room for that show. Sad thing, but one of the best experience I had in a movie theater.

I love how thanksgiving is for the family, and that people should go to movies as a family. A movie everyone wants to see. these results obviously show us that husbands and sons were forced to see this no talent crap. I'm sorry to tell you twighlight fans, but the muppets can act. they can act better than any actor or actress on the twilight movies. I would pay to see the muppets 5 times before seeing that twilight crap.

This Is Actually Good News

Did anyone stop to think that The Muppets cost only $45 million to make? That's a pretty low number for most blockbuster movies. That has to be less then all of the movies in the top 5. That pretty much means that if The Muppets have legs, then it will at least triple the amount it was made for, and we're only talking domestic numbers. This pretty much guarantees another Muppet movie.

I think the Muppets underperforming has to do with the audience being cautious after flops like Muppets from Space and some of their tv episodes, more than the quality of this current film. Kinda like how X-Men First Class had to fight against the bad taste left by X-men 3 and Wolverine. Hopefully word of mouth helps it, I know it convinced me to see the film later this week.

Why the hate?

I understand not liking Twilight, thinking they're bad movies and all, but reading some of these posts... I mean, wanting to go back in time to prevent the books from ever being written? Losing faith in the youth of America because they enjoy this stuff (as if we didn't like terrible things as kids too)? I don't get it. I never saw anything Twilight and don't plan on it, but I'm not losing sleep over its popularity.

I could not agree more, and its just people thinking its cool to hate twilight really, it's not just the youth who are twilight fans, I have 30 yr old friends who love the books & movies. Have i seen the movies? Yes i have. Did i enjoy them? Well not really. Its nothing to be so critical & judgmental over though.

I just don't understand why it's ok to be a huge fan of something like Batman or Star Wars, but be ridiculed of something like Twilight. People have different tastes (obviosuly), but people who are fans of one thing who criticize fans of another thing are idiots. It's not like I came on here and wrote something negative about any one of the Harry Potter films. People who hate these films TALK more about it than the actual fans.

Forget about people making fun of Twilight and making everything about it sound ridiculous. They are dummies. Any movies can be ridiculed with a little bit of an effort. That being said, the Twilight movies don't have much going for themselves. They ain't the huge piece of shit some pretend they are, but they are barely average anyhow. The writing is EXTREMELY weak, the romance makes no sense and Bella is just a little tease who can't decide who she wants for three freaking movies. Try to

well from what my friends tell me, the books are the same way, with the dialogue between characters, so how can u make it even better for the movie.

@ soloist, i do agree with you & i respect the fact you like movies of all genres & yet you get ridiculed for it.

From what I heard, the books are even worse than the movies. That mustn't be pretty.

only real surprise is the muppets not grossing more, but like the article says, it should have the legs through the holidays while twilight will drop big time.

If people want to waste their money on that Twilight crap, oh well...I saw the Muppets and it was incredible. Brought back so many great memories of their past movies and of the show. Always good to have a movie out there with no edginess, no cynicism, nothing negative, just heartwarming fun which is always needed.

I wish I could have a time machine right now. I would go back to the making of the first twilight book in the series and convince the author that her book would only bring misery to countless people out there. Hopefully that would be enough to stop it from being released. Oh well I guess the twihards won this one. Its a pity some of the really good movies didnt get much money this time.

If I had a time machine I wouldn't waste it trying to prevent Stephanie Meyer from having a career.

I seriously thought Muppets would open a lot stronger. That has nothing to do with Twilight or anything, I just really thought Muppets would have opened with at least $70 Mil. I'm sure it will have legs though.

I'm green for Kermit

The fantastic word of mouth Muppets will undoubtedly get/has gotten will really help these numbers I think :) especially in beating a sparkly vampire movie!

I know this is tiring and is often repeated but man, I just don't get how the Twilight movies are such a phenomenon. Even if you're a fan of the books these movies are full of awful acting, writing, and shitty effects.. I .... I just don't get it.
