Weekend Box Office Report: April 26-28, 2013

Apr. 28, 2013by: Dave Davis

Pain & Gain wins the posedown!

Mayhem maestro Michael Bay dialed things down (relatively speaking) with his latest effort PAIN & GAIN, which still powered its way to the top with $20 million.

The R-rated comedy caper, featuring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie as bodybuilding buffoons with crime on their miniscule minds, was based on a true story. Although the material was clearly a fair bit different than gigantic city-demolishing robots, critics and crowds accustomed to Bay's overblown offerings still may have expected something bigger -- with a 47% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a 'C+' CinemaScore, PAIN & GAIN's pump will probably fade quickly.

While PAIN & GAIN wasn't intended as Bay's customary summer spectacle, it still marks the lowest opening weekend for the filmmaker since 2005's sci-fi stiff THE ISLAND ($12.4M). Then again, the mischievous meatheads only carried a production cost of $26M, which is probably just the explosion budget on a standard Bay movie.

In general it was a somewhat slow weekend at the box office. Were people otherwise occupied with enjoying the increasingly pleasant weather, or is everyone just waiting until next weekend for IRON MAN 3?

Speaking of that eminent armor-clad Avenger, the rest of the world got to see IRON MAN 3 a week before North America, and the movie walloped the international box office with $195 million since its Wednesday release. Not only did Tony Stark's third solo adventure (this time with KISS KISS BANG BANG director Shane Black) vastly outperform the previous two IRON MAN movies, but also eclipsed THE AVENGERS' $185M overseas opening.

Meanwhile back in the US, Tom Cruise's futuristic action movie OBLIVION dropped to second place with $17.4 million, and a 10-day take of $64.7M as it drifts toward a $200M worldwide total. The Jackie Robinson biopic 42 stole third base with another $10.7 million, demonstrating that baseball was more interesting to audiences than star-studded matrimony, ditching the new romcom THE BIG WEDDING at the altar in fourth place with a $7.5 million debut.

THE CROODS are still lurching along in the middle of the chart, while the bottom half of the list fights over the cash scraps. G.I. JOE: RETALIATION has hit almost $350M globally, and although OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN hasn't seen much international action, it's managed to stick on the chart for six weeks as it comes up on a nine-figure total.

Outside the chart, the new Matthew McConaughey drama MUD just missed the Top 10 with $2.1 million, which it collected from only 363 screens. The Sam Raimi duo of OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL and the remake of his EVIL DEAD both departed the list this week, while thriller THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST and historical adventure KON-TIKI were the best performers among the limited releases.

Next weekend gets the summer movie season into high gear with Marvel's weaponized superstar IRON MAN 3, plus the limited release of the hitman thriller THE ICEMAN with Michael Shannon and Chris Evans.

Saw Pain and Gain yesterday, and was actually surprised at how good it actually was. It was almost like Bay had been possessed by Tony Scott for a good majority of the movie. The only real low point of the movie was Rebel Wilson. She seriously sucks ass as an 'actress' and really needs to stop getting speaking roles in high profile movies.

This was probably my favorite movie that The Rock has ever done. He actually had to act for this one, and he brought everything to the plate when he had

This was probably my favorite movie that The Rock has ever done. He actually had to act for this one, and he brought everything to the plate when he had to. No more getting by on dumb wrestling poses and sneers or a raised eyebrow like he just smelled his upper lip, nope, he actually gave an acting performance in this one. And a great one at that.

Those of you poo-pooing the movie because Bay's name is attached....get over it. If you haven't seen the movie, then STFU until you actually have seen it. Otherwise you just come off as just another elitist douchebag on the internet, and there are enough of those here already.

As a huge wrestling fan and a fan of The Rock since he was in his wrestling prime, I'm going to take offense to your "dumb wrestling poses" line. Sure he's made some bad movies (okay, a lot), but he has shown a lot of range in a bunch as well. The Rundown was pretty cool, and so was Gridiron Gang, Be Cool, and Faster. That movie sucked, but the raw intensity that The Rock channeled in that performance was pretty badass.

And dude, lay off the eyebrow. ;)

Glad everyone is pumping up Iron Man 3. I've really heard great things and it seems like the villain The Mandarin has been completely hidden in trailers (for me at least).. can't wait to be surprised....

Give The_Soloist more love people... this is a movie loving website and everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Saw Iron Man 3 twice and I really, really can't wait for you guys (over in the States / Canada) to see it. I'm not even saying that as "I saw it first" BS, just the fact that it's a great movie and I'd like to see what everyone else thinks of it. It's doing extremely well in this part of the planet.

He's quite the flavor of the day isn't he. Lol. Yeah heaven forbid if anyone has an opinion that differs or if the same person jumps on a subject and is first. At least he doesn't say "FIRST" like wankers on Facebook. He's enthusiastic about movies and that's fine with me. That's kind of why we're all on here.......isn't it?

Pain and glory

Avoid Pain & Glory. The movie has great talents, story ... But the real problem here is Bay. The movie is way too much edited. Even with the 2h09 running time. There's a lot of 15 seconds scenes. You don't even have the time to care of what people say or do and it's over. The man should go back to explosion movies!

This would have been an amazing movie in the capable hands f the Coen Brothers. The true story is perfect for the type of movies they create.

Pain and Gain will fall off next weekend, not just because of Iron Man 3 but because word of mouth will destroy that film.

Iron Man 3 kicks all kinds of ass.

Saw iron man 3 the other night and it is way better than 2.
Fact of the day: there is no one on this or any other planet that could fill the role of Tony Stark except RDJ. You'll understand why. 9.5/10

I really enjoyed "Pain and Gain". Very fun to watch an entertaining movie from Michael Bay once again. Very excited for "Iron Man 3". Hoping it's an all around better film than "Iron Man 2".

anomaly7 - Probably coz those darn foreigners...

... will copy the movies if they are released in the US first ....and then sell pirate copies before they reach our shores. But you law abiding citizens of the US would rather wait until the movies hit your local cinemas rather than watch pirate copies so we lesser mortals get to see them first. It's probably got something to do with that. Either way...I'm happy coz here in the UK...I got to see it today ...and spoiler alert ....Superman and Batman show up in a cafe...just kidding... Im

This is The Rock's year

The Rock has two films of his in the box office and another blockbuster coming out too. This man is unstoppable. Movie studios take notes.

Also....how the hell is scary movie 5 still on the chart. Straight up garbage right there

I like the dude. He has star power and the same charisma as old 80's action stars. I wish him a good career. He was one of the only good things about "Pain and Gain".

I'll never understand why American movies would open internationally before opening in America. I'm sure it has to do with money (like most decisions by studios), but I still don't see the logic. Anyway, yeah, mostly just jealous that we haven't been able to see it yet. Seems like movies should just open worldwide the same weekend to be fair to everyone.

I don't even try to troll or piss off people on this website. I just enjoy stating my opinion and am very passionate about films in general; like alot of people on this site. I know my taste can be off sometimes or not everyone agrees, but that's the great thing about comments. Everyone can state their own opinions.

I don't know. I think people on here can be TOO serious on here sometimes unfortunately. I appreciate the support though.

Soloist should feel honored. I'm not even kidding. Don't ever take that as people not appreciating you on here. It's all part of the charm. It's like telling Donnie to shut the fuck up.

I know..I mean everything is opinion based and the soloist does get a harsh card played quite often I've noticed...sure I don't always agree but he gets negative for "can't wait for iron man 3" don't get me wrong if he said "I can't wait for scary movie 6" I'd expect everyone to burn him

Yeah I think it sucks a bit. I notice the Soloist gets a real rigging when it comes to the thumbs down dept.
"What did you think of this movie"
Average jobloer..... "I loved it" -45 thumbs up
The Soloist..... " I loved it"- 100 thumbs down and let's kill him for saying what everyone else thinks.
Ok maybe not quite that bad but yeah. I didn't really agree with the soloists comment the other day about Amazing Spider-Man sucking but hey he's entitled to his opinion. We all are. Can't we all

Has Soloist said stupid things before? Yes. I don't think it's because of that. My hypothesis that's based on absolutely nothing is it's because Soloist is that "first comment on every article guy". Again i have no clue, I usually just down vote his more stupid comments.

I've always felt Soloist gives his honest opinion & loves movies in general, can't fault or hate on a man for that.

Pain and Gain was hilarious and I enjoyed it alot more than I thought I would.

Can't wait to see Iron Man 3. I'm at the point where I just can't wait any longer to see it.
