More money for The Last Jedi!

As 2017 comes to an end this weekend, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI remained on top at the box office with an estimated $52.4 million!

With a domestic total of $517.1 million on its third weekend, director Rian Johnson's chapter in the sci-fi series has become the highest-grossing release of the year, surpassing the $504 million total of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

The Skywalker sequel has also gathered $1.04 billion worldwide so far, putting it close to the totals for last December's ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY both domestically ($532 million) and globally ($1.05 billion).

JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE held its second place spot with $50.5 million, an improvement of 39% over its opening last weekend.

The PG-13 adventure sequel with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Kevin Hart has an impressive 12-day domestic total of $169.8 million (on a reported $90 million cost).

In third place was PITCH PERFECT 3 with $17.7 million, losing 10% from its opening in the same slot last week. The $45 million musical-comedy sequel has a ten-day domestic total of $64.2 million, and has collected $92.8 million worldwide.

Hugh Jackman's singing ringleader THE GREATEST SHOWMAN stayed in fourth place with $15.2 million, a notable gain of 73% above last weekend's opening. The P.T. Barnum music circus has a 12-day domestic total of $48.7 million and a worldwide total of $83.9 million (its approximate production cost).

The animated bull movie FERDINAND persisted in fifth place with $11.6 million, bringing the $111 million family feature to a worldwide total of $125.7 million.

In sixth place was Pixar's COCO with $6.5 million, giving the animated Day of the Dead celebration $178.9 million domestic and $537 million worldwide on its sixth week in theaters.

Director Ridley Scott's rapidly revised ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD was in seventh place with $5.4 million for its first weekend, although it opened on Christmas Day and has collected $12.6 million total since then.

The R-rated drama with Michelle Williams, Mark Wahlberg and Christopher Plummer (replacing Kevin Spacey) cost a reported $50 million. Most critics approved of the fact-based thriller with an average of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).

The Gary Oldman Winston Churchill biopic DARKEST HOUR was in eighth place again with $5.2 million, taking it to a domestic total of $17.9 million.

Matt Damon's R-rated DOWNSIZING was in ninth place with $4.6 million, shrinking by 7% from its opening last weekend. The $68 million sci-fi comedy-drama from director Alexander Payne has a ten-day domestic total of $17 million.

FATHER FIGURES closed out the list with $3.7 million, lurching ahead by 13% from last weekend's opening. The R-rated ensemble comedy (formerly titled BASTARDS) has a ten-day domestic total of $12.7 million.

Outside the chart, Guillermo del Toro's monster romance THE SHAPE OF WATER sank out of sight. In limited release, PHANTOM THREAD (filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson's apparently final collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis) had a weekend per-screen average of $55k, and gathered $531k total since its Christmas Day release. Steven Spielberg's drama THE POST continued its strong limited release run with a $60k per-screen average and $1.7 million total in its second weekend on nine screens.

The Jessica Chastain thriller MOLLY'S GAME opened on 271 screens for a $2.3 million weekend and $5.2 million total since it opened on Christmas Day.

Next weekend starts the new year with horror in the spinoff INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY.
