Weekend Box Office: January 18-20, 2013

Jan. 20, 2013by:

Big Mama!

Actress Jessica Chastain is probably feeling pretty damn good right now -- she's a Golden Globes winner, an Oscar nominee, and the star of two movies at the top of the box office. (Expect someone's asking price to go up!)

Her latest release MAMA took the #1 spot this weekend with $28.1 million. The PG-13 supernatural frightener was shepherded by producer/horror maestro Guillermo del Toro, and considering its mere $15M budget, he and studio Universal must be plenty pleased. It's already performed better than the filmmaker's last "Guillermo del Toro Presents" release, the remake DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, which ended up with $24M total.

Chastain actually knocked herself off the top -- last weekend's winner ZERO DARK THIRTY came in second place with another $17.6 million, pushing it to a $55.9M total after two weeks in wide release. With the Oscar nominations (and ongoing controversy), the movie should see decent business for a few more weeks.

Speaking of awards, David O. Russell's comedy-drama SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK benefitted from nominations, star Jennifer Lawrence's Golden Globes win, and the wide expansion into 2500 locations (it's been in limited release since November 16th). The movie placed third over the weekend, adding $11.3 million onto its slow climb to $55.3M.

GANGSTER SQUAD slipped one spot since last week to fourth with $9.1 million (putting it just over halfway back to its $60M cost), ahead of the new Mark Wahlberg/Russell Crowe thriller BROKEN CITY in fifth. January was much kinder to Wahlberg last year, when CONTRABAND opened to $24.3M and went on to $66.5M.

The cheapie horror spoof A HAUNTED HOUSE squeaked ahead of DJANGO UNCHAINED, which has been grappling with LES MISERABLES since they were both released on Christmas Day (Tarantino's latest just began its international run, bringing in $48M from overseas crowds). And with the federal Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observed on Monday in the US, all the movies on the chart will get an extra day to pull in crowds who have time off from work and school.

As for Arnold Schwarzenegger's big return to starring roles, part of the title was correct -- THE LAST STAND collapsed in last place with just $6.3 million. Given that wheezing performance, it will be interesting to see how Arnie's fellow action veterans Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis make out when their own solo features BULLET TO THE HEAD and A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD arrive in February (not to mention younger competitor Dwayne Johnson in SNITCH).

Next weekend brings the long-delayed fairy tale action flick HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS, Jason Statham as novelist Donald Westlake's tough guy PARKER, and an all-star cast goofing around in the R-rated short film collection MOVIE 43.

Of the Oscar nominees for Best Picture, what's your personal favorite (not necessarily to win)? VOTE HERE!

surprised and not surprised.

didnt expect Mama to top ZDT but good for Jessica Chastain and good for GDT. dont see the surprise at the Last Stand coming in last. and wont be surprised to hear the same shocked voice cry out when Bullet to the Head grosses about the same. to the writer, however, I dont think you can lump Die Hard in with these others. McClane has brand recognition, proven quallity that ranges from good to spectacular. even Live Free grossed nearly $400M. i would be shocked if Die Hard didnt open with twice

I have not seen Mama. Maybe it's good, I don't know. But I fear the real take away from this movie doing so well is the reinforcement of the idea that the only horror studios will make any money on is PG-13 horror. So while this box office result is good for the folks that made this movie, it's bad for the rest of us.

The Last Stand is what is set out to be. A hard hitting fun action movie with just enough plot to keep you interested. I had a blast. My gf who likes the "Modern Action Movie" had a great time with this one AND Expendable 2. Sh*t she wouldn't really care for unless Jason Statham was shirtless. To me, that says quite a bit. She is a 23 year old who doesn't know/appreciate the whole 80's action scene but had a fantastic time. That's what matters. Movies like this need to be made more.

Arnie, I thank you.

Unfortunately, Universal are prolly gonna freak the fuck out and pull the brakes on the King Conan movie.

Wanted to love The Last Stand. It just didn't pack an adequate punch. Still deserved better than a #10 opening.

I originally wasn't going to see THE LAST STAND, but my love for old school shoot 'em ups convinced me to go. I love Arnold, cheesy one-liners and all and I knew exactly what I was getting in to. The theater had a handful of people, but they seemed to be into it from start to finish. The movie was a modern day western with bloody violence and hard, fast action. To my surprise, the movie moved pretty quickly and I enjoyed myself more than I thought I would. I know Knoxville is an accquired taste

I mean, what more are you expecting from a Schwarzenegger film? The film finishing number 10 at the box office was a big surprise for me. I was thinking at least 3rd or 4th place. For a 65 year-old, Schwarzenegger still got it. But like one post said, today's audiences would rather see someone like The Rock (who is great BTW) than old farts like Stallone and Schwarzenegger. Though it seems Bruce Willis can do 5 more Die Hards if he wanted to on account of him not looking a day over 40. I think it is the bald head...no grey hairs.

Arnold and Johnny just don't mix

It has confused audiences as to what kind of movie this is going to be. On one hand you have Arnold, a huge action star, and on the other hand you have Johnny Knoxville who has a reputation of being, well, an idiot, and the trailer just confirms that. I'm sure Johnny is a nice guy but he is a big turnoff when it comes to movies.

Damn shame about Arnies first starring role in a decade. I am a huge fan don't get me wrong but the movie just did not look appealing & looked like a Walking Tall ripoff. Hoping Bullet to the Head & next Die Hard fare better. Parker looks decent also

Whats with all the Johnny Knoxville hate though?

Last Stand

The Last Stand looked horrible. How many times are old action stars going to make old guy jokes. It's annoying.

Wow. The Last Stand at No. 10? That's just disappointing. I hope studios would make note not to cast Johnny Knoxville.

I'm disappointed The Last Stand hasn't done well, but not surprised. It's a fun movie, but nothing special. I'm sure the new generation of movie goers don't care much for Arnold anyway. Terminator 3 was his last film, and that was 10 years ago. Times have kind of changed I think. People aren't really looking to the big, burly action star anymore. At most, I think Jason Statham resembles the last of a dying breed of action star. Mostly, I am disappointed because I want Jee-woon Kim to succeed

I'd love to see him make more Hollywood films. However, I think Arnie still has box office power. I can see The Tomb and Ten doing much better. Hopefully Last Stand will get decent dvd sales.

The Last Stabd

It really didn't look that good, but it really lost me with the casting of Johnny Knoxville. I'm sorry but while I love the Jackass movies, he is a negative mark for whatever movie in which he appears.

For those that saw it, what were your opinions? With my day off tomorrow, I'm looking to decide between a few movies ( The Last Stand, Hobbit, Silver Linings or Zero Dark)

The reasons why Last Stand didn't do well (in no real order)

1. Going up against award winning movies.

2. Been a decade since his last main role in a movie and most movie stars don't make a comeback years after their last film unless it's a sequel to one of their greatest hits.

3. Expendables aside, typical R rated action flicks usually don't do well at the US box office.

4. Revelations in Arnie's personal life could put off casual watchers.

5. Johnny Knocksville = Roy Schnider in most action fans eyes.

6. It's been just over a month

6. It's been just over a month since the Sandy Hook shootings and the ongoing argument over gun control would put alot of people off seeing a movie starring an actor most famous for shooting people in films doing just that in his latest flick, which brings me to my next point.

7. the main poster has Arnie shooting a gun next to what appears to be a school bus while his sidekick laughs, not the best way to advertise a movie at the mo. Seriously someone at Lionsgate marketing should get fired for that.

The film should do well outside the states (I'll be seeing it next week) but it looks like Arnie is just going to make mid budget movies from now on.

Good post! The marketing was poor for this from day one. Also the casting of Forest Whitaker & Johnny Knoxville were mind-bogglingly poor decisions.

I really don't agree with some of your points. Despite the Sandy Hook massacre, hard R rated films have done well and that includes Django - which features some of the most violent gunplay ever committed to film. I also don't think people really care about a celebrity's personal life. If that were the case, a lot of stars careers would've crumbled by now. Also, Mama and for that matter, most PG13 supernatural horror films tend to attract very large teenage audiences. In the simplest way, I

In the simplest way, I don't think the film did good simply because it didn't look that good. And this is coming from a pretty hardcore Schwarzenegger fan. The commercials, trailers, and marketing did nothing to wet my action fan appetite. And I think the lackluster look of the film turned a lot of people off. No matter who's starring in your film, if it doesnt look good, people won't pay a ticket to see it. Although, I do agree with your point that going up against the likes of ZD30, SLP, Django, and many other award contenders, audiences have priorities.

"Mama" must be riding on the coat-tails of the buzz around Jessica Chastain, and the fact that it it's getting "above-average" reviews.

Mama not worth it

The only reason MAMA is making money, and even made it to be released on the big screens, where it doesn't belong, is because of Del Toro's overrated name attached to it. If it wasn't for his name recognition, the movie would have made it straight to DVD/Blu Ray. The movie is just an accumulation of horror clichs seen hundreds of times before, with a CGI MAMA not scary at all..

Happy for Jessica Chastain. She deserves it. I saw both Mama and Zero Dark Thirty and both were really good and deserving of the success they are getting.

I'm glad to see Silver Linings Playbook still getting love. It's a brilliant film and one of the best of the year. I'm still disappointed that Gangster Squad isn't doing better. The movie was great and a real blast to see on the big screen.

Am seeing Hansel and Gretel next weekend. Movie looks fun as hell and I am a die hard fan of

Congratulations to Jessica Chastain for knocking BIG ASS Schwarzennegger off the top spot.
No one likes you anymore after being Governor, nearly destroying "Ka-li-fur-nyah", and your crumbled marriage.
