Weekend Box Office Report: June 20-22, 2014

Jun. 22, 2014by:

Think Too gets the jump on 22!

Comedy was the preferred option at theaters this weekend, and the sequel THINK LIKE A MAN TOO got the last laugh with an opening of $30 million!

Star Kevin Hart continues to prove his worth at the box office with his third 2014 release, after RIDE ALONG ($134 million on a $25 million budget) and the remake of ABOUT LAST NIGHT ($48.6 million on a $12 million budget). His latest, a follow-up to the hit 2012 ensemble comedy THINK LIKE A MAN (based on Steve Harvey's book), has already made more than its modest $24 million reported cost. Although it's not necessarily all about Hart's appeal -- his THINK co-star Taraji P. Henson also has a considerable following on social media, which can't hurt.

The sequel came in a bit below the $33.6 million opening of the first THINK LIKE A MAN, which (like the sequel and Hart's RIDE ALONG) was directed by FANTASTIC FOUR helmer Tim Story. The original ended up with $91.5 million, but also opened in April and didn't have the strong summer competition to battle.

THINK LIKE A MAN TOO also managed to inch past the #2 movie despite being on 1000 fewer screens, which is no small feat. It didn't tickle many critics (22% on Rotten Tomatoes) but paying crowds gave it an 'A-' CinemaScore.

In a close second was 22 JUMP STREET with $29 million (a 49% drop from its opening last week). The R-rated Channing Tatum/Jonah Hill sequel has already shot to a 10-day total of $111.4 million (21 JUMP STREET topped out at $138.4 million), so it stands a decent chance of ending up the summer's highest-earning comedy.

Landing in third place (despite being on 1000 more screens than 22 JUMP STREET) was HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 with $25.3 million -- also a 49% fall from its opening last weekend -- and a $95.1 million 10-day total.

Initially the DRAGON sequel seemed like a reasonable guess to become one of the summer's highest-grossers, and while Toothless still has a couple of months to spread his wings, it's a long journey to the first movie's $217 million domestic and $494 million global totals (although it has yet to open in many major foreign territories).

Opening in fourth was the new musical JERSEY BOYS with $13.5 million. Adapting a smash Broadway stage production to the big screen doesn't always translate to a MAMMA MIA!-sized blockbuster (as also demonstrated by the 2012 flop ROCK OF AGES), and JERSEY BOYS didn't exactly start on a high note. Critics gave director Clint Eastwood's $40 million Four Seasons movie a 55% average at Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences hummed along with an 'A-' CinemaScore.

Coming in fifth was Disney's MALEFICENT with $13.5 million and Angelina Jolie's wicked villainess is up to $521 million worldwide, so sometimes it's good to be bad. In sixth was EDGE OF TOMORROW with $10.3 million and seems likely to be the latest Tom Cruise movie to fall short of $100 million domestic (it's nearing $300 million worldwide).

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS is just a few short breaths away from $100 million, and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is within a bone claw's reach of $700 million worldwide. Jon Favreau's CHEF is still cooking in the Top 10 on less than 1000 screens (interestingly, it's the only release currently on the chart that is not based on existing material), while GODZILLA is getting ready to stomp into the sunset.

Outside the chart, A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST is six feet under, and NEIGHBORS leaves the list with a respectable $145.7 million total. The Guy Pearce/Robert Pattinson post-apocalypse drama THE ROVER expanded to nearly 600 screens, but it must be a tough sell judging by the languid $590k total.

Next weekend delivers just one new wide release as the Autobots team with Mark Wahlberg for director Michael Bay's robo-explodo extravaganza TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION. And if you can find it, the Chris Evans sci-fi locomotive SNOWPIERCER opens in limited release.

How much do you think TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION will open with next weekend? VOTE HERE!

It's so hip to hate Kevin Hart. He's not as awesome as that Groundhog Day movie starring Tom Cruise. He's just another Chris Tucker because you know..... they're both black.

Humans are dumb.

This is the only reason a Kevin Hart (who is incredibly annoying and largely unfunny) vehicle outgrosses some stellar and well-reviewed films.
Edge of Tomorrow did not deserve to get it's ass kicked by anyone, let alone a Chris Tucker wannabe and some sentimental, pappy crap like Fault im Our Stars.
Dragon was great too.
The world is insane. Come on home Jesus, it's time.

Idk it's hard for me to agree with you completely. Yes, Edge of Tomorrow is incredible, and I've said it before but I really think it and LEGO movie deserve oscar nominations unless there's 10 other great films that come out during oscar season - I haven't really paid attention to the "oscar movie season" yet. Right now, it's just a travesty ppl haven't flocked to see EotT, though I can understand some of the reasons, and i am hearing (and spreading) nothing but great word of mouth (man I

Right now, it's just a travesty ppl haven't flocked to see EotT, though I can understand some of the reasons, and i am hearing (and spreading) nothing but great word of mouth (man I almost sat down to watch it again. One of the few movies I felt that way as well as that i wish the movie was 4 hrs long - well, exaggeration, but longer). However, I truly believe they should be nominated for being really great despite not "Oscar type movies". Great movies don't necessarily have to be about AIDS and WWII and depicting or teaching us about horrible things (and there's a handful of terrible films about both and similar subjects). Some of those movies are in fact great (I'm thinking of a funny Kate Winslet joke on extras), but I think Role Models, and The Hangover ONE and the movies above off the top of my head are great all the way through, great at what they do and were trying to achieve. Some of those even had small messages in them. Just bc a movie is a vulgar comedy, sci fi, or "made" out of Legos, and all are incredible, doesn't make them not as good as movies about tragedies and characters over coming them. LEGO movie actually does have an important message. I'll also say that in my opinion, Dallas Buyer's Club really wasn't a very good movie. It was decent, elevated by two (and more) powerhouse performances that should've been nominated no doubt and i was fine with them winning though I may have picked differently. Anyway, I completely agree with your view on that, and I haven't seen Dragons 2, but I can't wait to as I loved the first one. I don't know anything about fault in out stars. I asked if it was a YA book and never got an answer, but I assume he is. I agree with all that, though teen girls see movies too and that's where EofT and others just crammed to much action back to back. It seems like it has some legs. I'm really positive it'll catch on in video, and I've wondered ab a sequel. Maybe tell Emily Blunt's story. Or another soldier on another part of the war who got the power? It's so good I'd watch ab the same story, as long as blunt or a great actor and director came back and it wasn't DTV

HOWEVER, here's my only disagreement with you. Kevin Hart is funny. Ride Along could very well be the worst movie I've ever seen, but I randomly saw the first think like a man and I thought it was a pretty fn funny chick flick. Have u seen it? I'm not gonna see the sequel unless with a female or like on a Sunday on HBO, but he is for real funny man. His stand ups are really funny. He can be obnoxious for sure - like at the nba all star games, but I think he picks these crappy easy roles bc he knows the audience for the film is gonna eat it up. Kinda like Adam Sandler, but way quicker. But I will stand up for him that he's funny. And further evidence is his appearance in this is the end and the upcoming Seth Rogen cop movie. Rogen and Apatow and those guys are hilarious, and Hart was in either undeclared or freaks and geeks. If he was simply a Damon wayans guy or the funny guy from Tyler perry movies they wouldn't have given him the cameo as they did all their friends or he wouldn't have let him co star with him in this buddy cop movie. I can't think of a great example bc Hart is hot, and there's no other black comedic actor like him in the biz right now, but Rogen wouldn't do this movie with Mike Epps. Again, bad example. But Hart is funny. Those guys wouldn't hang out with him otherwise. He just picks easy lazy money makers for the black audience, who haven't had a comedy directed strictly at their audience in a while. If u haven't seen the first one have 2-3 beers to try and remove your expectation and watch it with some friends. I wouldn't recommend paying to see it, unless it's like a $5 bin, but it is funny. And def see his stand ups. I'm not surprised this movie came in first but it is a shame

Longest. Reply. Ever.
That was awesome. We will just have to agree to disagree about Kevin Hart. I'm sure he's a fine actor, if not completely unoriginal, but I just don't find him to be very funny. Like, at all.

It's a shame that a Kevin Hart film is doing better at the Box Office then an exceptional Tom Cruise film. Too bad more people aren't seeing it.

And, I would highly suggest if you have the chance, to go see The Rover. Great film with Oscar worthy performances from Pearce AND Pattinson.

Really hope Snowpiercer makes it's way towards my area. Dieing to see it.

Check your math - Edge of Tomorrow is going to pass $100 mil

Despite initially being written off as coming in under $80 mil due to its lackluster opening weekend, the movie has been holding stronger than any other release, and is almost certain to pass the $100 million domestic mark. With at least $300 mil overseas looking likely, it will actually turn a small profit in theaters - a far cry from the 'massive flop' it was initially written off as.

The math is that it's likely going to start bleeding screens in the next 2-3 weeks when US theater owners make space for big releases rather than hold onto a Tom Cruise movie with low-to-moderate per-screen averages. Which means it could have an even harder time getting through another $25 million domestic -- Word of mouth is only going to take it so far, and it's already been out for weeks in most foreign territories except Japan. It might break even from its worldwide total if it can get to

I really don't understand why Kevin Hart is so popular. He just comes off like a wannabe Chris Tucker.

I like Kevin Hart

...and, to be honest, the fact that critics hate his movie makes me more interested in seeing it as critics for the most part are humorless. That being said, I won't be watching it in theaters. I gotta watch comedies at home because I get addicted to the rewind button that is sorely lacking in a movie theater. I'm sure I'll like it though.

Edge of Tomorrow was pretty good. Basically Starship Troopers meets Groundhogs Day. Not entirely original, but fun to watch nonetheless.

Snowpiercer

Snowpiercer I'll watch in a theater, but that all hinges on if they actually play the thing here. I'm guessing I won't get an opportunity to watch that one until it hits DVD.

Jersey Boys will still make money

Jersey boys will still have legs. Older audiences don't always rush to opening day so expect to see this one hanging for awhile in the top ten.

Kevin Hart screaming for two hours is not a good time. I will echo what others have said and say that it is such a damn shame that EoT isn't a huge hit. Such a badass flick.

The first think like a man wasn't overly amazing or funny. I agree with studboi69 I just don't see the appeal. I enjoy the cast but no appeal to the story. I believe it shows when it opened with barely any other huge competitors this week and it barely got past 22 jump street. I'd rather go see that again.

I seriously don't see the appeal in Think Like A Man. It looks like every other romantic comedy that came before it, and Kevin Hart is just annoying. Seriously, more people need to be seeing Edge of Tomorrow.

I, personally, think Edge of Tomorrow will eventually inch past $100 mil domestically. The movie is already a hit elsewhere outside of the US. It will probably end up with last summer Pacific Rim numbers.

Yeah. Ontop of that, I only saw a trailer online a month before it was released, I fast forward commercials on tv, and saw no posters or ads. I only knew the movie was coming out because I was looking for it. Don't know why it got buried in the summer
