Weekend Box Office Report: March 22-24, 2013

03.24.2013

Croods rule!

There hasn't been much in theaters this year for the kiddies, so crowds flocked to the first big family offering, putting the new computer-animated release THE CROODS at the top with $44.7 million.

Audiences also gave an 'A' CinemaScore to the caveman clan fronted by Nicolas Cage (aside from GHOST RIDER and NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS, it's the biggest opening of anything the actor has been associated with). Additionally, the 3D flick has gathered more than $63M from overseas for a $108M global total.

For a DreamWorks Animation production, the Stone Age tribe's domestic opening is just below MEGAMIND ($46M) but slightly better than HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON ($43.7M), which also came from THE CROODS co-director Chris Sanders (and went on to nearly $500M worldwide). The movie was distributed by Fox, who already has prehistoric CG success with the ICE AGE series.

The explosive new R-rated OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN detonated in second place with a $30.5 million opening. That's certainly a boost for star Gerard Butler, who has fallen flat at the box office lately with releases like CHASING MAVERICKS, PLAYING FOR KEEPS and MACHINE GUN PREACHER. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of head-stabbing to get back on track!

OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN is also the biggest opening for director Antoine Fuqua, who's seemingly still coasting on goodwill from TRAINING DAY despite following that with mediocrity like SHOOTER, TEARS OF THE SUN and KING ARTHUR. The $70M action-thriller also gets the jump on director Roland Emmerich's similar DC destruction WHITE HOUSE DOWN, which opens in June and features hero Channing Tatum and President Jamie Foxx.

Coming in third place was the previous winner of the past two weeks, the Sam Raimi-directed OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL with $22 million. Although it cost over $200M to make, Disney's 3D trip down the Yellow Brick Road has collected $356.3M worldwide in three weekends, demonstrating that there's still cash to be found somewhere over the rainbow.

Last week's surprise second-placer THE CALL dropped to fourth with $8.7 million, still enough to keep Halle Berry ahead of the new Tina Fey/Paul Rudd comedy-drama ADMISSION, which premiered in fifth with just $6.4 million. That wasn't too much more than SPRING BREAKERS on half as many screens -- the crime tale expanded from limited release to over 1000 theaters and swiped $5 million, already surpassing its modest budget.

THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE and JACK THE GIANT SLAYER continue to slip, and IDENTITY THIEF is preparing to leave after scoring $127.7M. With SNITCH hanging on the chart for over a month, The Rock has accomplished something that elder action stars Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis could not: staying in the Top 10 for more than three weeks.

Outside the chart, SAFE HAVEN and 21 AND OVER drop out of sight, and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK finally slides from the chart after nearly five months in theaters (and a $127.2M total). And the new Rob Schneider spoof INAPPROPRIATE COMEDY, directed by the ShamWow guy (yes, really), made a pitiful $625 per-screen average at 275 locations.

Next weekend offers a reduced team of soldiers against the forces of Cobra in G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, plus the young-adult sci-fi thriller THE HOST (based on the book by TWILIGHT writer Stephenie Meyer), Tyler Perry in the new Tyler Perry movie TYLER PERRY'S TEMPTATION: CONFESSIONS OF A MARRIAGE COUNSELOR, and the Ryan Gosling/Bradley Cooper drama THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES in limited release.

Saw the big three this weekend: Croods, Olympus, and Spring Breakers. Liked Olympus best of all three. I enjoyed Croods as well, but it was definitely aimed more at children. Was funny, but completely predictable. Animation was nice though. Olympus was awesome, just the kind of R-rated action flick I'd been missing for a while and all the other action films this year before it have paled in comparison. Spring Breakers....wtf did I see? The film felt like some film school, drug fueled art film.

The film felt like some film school, drug fueled art film. I kept waiting for it to have some kind of message, to have some kind of meaning, but in the end it was just an empty, ridiculously escalating stitch-together film of spring break footage and craziness. Maybe it takes a certain person to get a real kick out of that. And while I did enjoy certain aspects about it, namely some of the stylistic choices in the film, some of the imagery, and some of the music, the thing as an entirety had almost zero value as a film, even in the entertainment department. James Franco was the clear exception to this, as he nailed his part to a T.

Saw Spring Breakers

The movie was descent, after reading the review here I had really high expectations, but it was entertaining. It was a bad movie experience at the theater I saw it at. It was packed and they did not dim the lights during the entire previews. I went and complained and they said they would tell someone about it. They had ushers walking down the aisles checking everyone's ID's and this went on through the entire movie they would come in and look at peoples ID's. So that killed the experience

'White House Down' is definitely 100% PG-13. Confirmed by director Roland Emmerich when talking about the differences between his film and Olympus:

"Theirs is a quite different movie it's R-rated with a foreign threat, and ours is PG-13 and a threat from within."

I really hope Olympus outgrosses WHD. To send a message.

Cool to see R rated action finally prevail this year! Antoine Fuqua is certainly a very underrated director, with the exception of King Arthur (not his fault though) has never really made a bad movie.

Glad a quality R rated auctioneer got in the top 3. Antoine Fuqua delivers solid entertainment. I recommend Olympus, Shooter, and Tears of the Sun. That's how action movies for adults should be.

Also, I'm all about The Place Beyond The Pines next weekend. I really hope my local theater will be playing it because I don't think I can wait much longer for it anymore at this point.

I don't think gosling goes full frontal, so keep your stiffy in its cage. Although having cooper and gosling play off each other in the same movie must make you draw wood.

It's sad to see bullying and harassing someone just for the fun of it has reached even my favorite JoBlo.... What the fuck is wrong with you guys? EVERYONE has their own personal taste, you don't like someone's opinion, give him a Thumbs Down, thats why its there. I thought we schmoes were more civilized than this.

This has potential to be one of the best smaller films of the year. Don't pay attention to the malakas bro. Most of us are here for the love of film as you have clearly demonstrated for many years here.

Oh my God, Stop saying it's "Bullying" and "Harassing" if someone puts up a line about soloist having a mancrush on Gosling. It's not bullying if someone makes a joke you tool. I'll admit the schmoes can be rabid and uncivilized at times, but to say "bullying" is happening online just because someone makes a joke is pathetic.

Olympus Has Fallen Was Great!

Glad to see Olympus Has Fallen debuting with big numbers this weekend. The movie was non stop action and was entertaining as hell. I was glued to the edge of my seat for the entire time. In my opinion, it's also easily the best action film of the last ten years. It was that good. I also think it set the bar very high for White House Down, so it'll be interesting to see how WHD delivers differently from Olympus.

Sounds great + with CBum's review. I'm diggin' that you referenced an old-school Die Hard feel below. I cannot wait to see this! It doesn't come out here until April though.

Although I heard Olympus wasnt all that baf its gonna have NOTHING on White House Down. Just wait for the Tatum and Foxx late night promotions and stuff. Those two are so like-able and hilarious together. Can't wait to see Tatum kick some serious ass and save the president this Summer!!

I'm excited for White House Down, but I think Olympus Has Fallen has a huge advantage now because it was released first and actually performed well with big numbers.

Olympus Has Fallen was easily the best action movie of the last ten years and I think set the bar very high for White House Down. Olympus Has Fallen also made Die Hard 5 look like complete utter shit.

Don't judge til you've seen it. But maybe I jumped the gun a little too quick. It's one of the best action films of the last ten years. But for me personally it was like watching the original Die Hard film again.
