Weekend Box Office Report: May 3-5, 2013

May. 5, 2013by: Dave Davis

Iron Man 3 rockets to the top!

If there was any question whether Marvel's characters could draw crowds in solo adventures post-AVENGERS, it was answered this weekend in full force as IRON MAN 3 hammered box office records with a $175.3 million opening.

That staggering domestic debut zips past the $169.1M opening of the previous #2 record holder HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2, but it stalled short of the colossal first weekend of Marvel's own super-extravaganza THE AVENGERS, which holds the #1 title with $207.4 million.

In addition to the spectacular North American opening, IRON MAN 3 has also generated more than half a billion from international audiences since it was released around the globe over a week ago, already putting its worldwide total at $680.1 million.

The Shane Black-directed entry in the Stark saga was also helmet-and-shoulders above the impressive openings of both IRON MAN ($98.6M) and IRON MAN 2 ($128.1M). For a bit more Marvel perspective, IRON MAN 3's first weekend was nearly that of the domestic totals of shell-head's fellow Avengers CAPTAIN AMERICA ($176.6M) and THOR ($181M).

Even without Marvel's other colorful heroes joining Robert Downey Jr.'s brash genius on the screen, crowds seemed to enjoy the third IRON MAN and graded it with a strong "A" CinemaScore, which means that the armor-clad heavyweight should crush competition for some time... at least until the crew of the Enterprise returns in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.

There's not much to say about the rest of the chart, as everyone else got lost in IRON MAN 3's jetwash and couldn't get beyond seven figures. Michael Bay's bodybuilding crime caper PAIN & GAIN dropped around 62% of its opening weekend business, putting it in a distant second place with $7.6 million. The baseball biopic 42 is still rounding third with $6.2 million, and could even trot to $100 million before it runs out of breath.

Tom Cruise's sci-fi epic OBLIVION has drifted below Jackie Robinson to fourth place with $5.7 million, followed by CG cavepeople clan THE CROODS in fifth with $4.2 million (and $517M worldwide). THE BIG WEDDING and SCARY MOVIE 5 still struggle while Matthew McConaughey's drama MUD took advantage of the situation by adding an extra 200 screens and sneaking onto the Top 10 with $2.1 million, just ahead of the resurfaced OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL.

Outside the chart, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN and JURASSIC PARK 3D have made their exit, while the fact-based hitman story THE ICEMAN had a decent limited release opening with a $23k per-screen average.

Next weekend, IRON MAN 3 has to face director Baz Luhrmann's ostentatious adaptation of THE GREAT GATSBY and the comedy TYLER PERRY PRESENTS PEEPLES, plus the limited release of the Eli Roth-produced earthquake-horror flick AFTERSHOCK.

I miss the podcast

Mondays just aren't the same without it.

Oh and to stay on topic, how the hell did Iron Man 3 make that much money?!
I knew those films were popular, but that much?

Thanks Zombie3298!!
And I guess people misunderstood me then. I didn't mean that I don't think the film deserves success or that it is a bad movie. Hell I haven't even seen it yet and am quite looking forward to it. I've always been a fan of Shane Black's work. I just never thought Iron Man 3 would have this level of success. I figured 110 million dollars at most, so my reaction was genuine surprise.

I'm sure Iron Man 3 can scoop everything up and it has enough time before Man of Steel is in theatre. Then it will be Superman's turn at the box office.

It was a very entertaining movie. Not great, but still very good. Robert Downey Jr. is just so good that he makes it entertaining.

The more I think about this movie after seeing it

I go from "It was ok" to "MEH" to "you know, it really kinda sucked in lots of ways"
Like IM2, I will not be seeing this movie again - probably ever. 4 of us went, 2 were kids. 6 year old boy and 4 year old girl. An hour into the film she whispers to me "I don't like this movie, can we go" and she loves super heroes and Iron Man. Not wanting to talk about potential spoilers, I will not go into much detail on what I disliked.

I don't know how Iron Man 3 got a "A" score. I haven't seen audience's this divided on a film in a while. Maybe Dark Knight Rises, but even that didn't seem as crazy as this. As for the twist, Marvel had to know that was going to piss off some comic fans after getting their hopes up with a marketing plan to deceive audiences. The fact that they went through with the idea anyway makes me wonder if I should applaud them for taking a risk like that, or to think that they were trying to be too

Only time will tell.

Do you really think that without the twist that fans wouldn't have still been pissed? The portrayal of the Mandarin in this movie was never even close to how he is in the comics BEFORE the twist. He was Mandarin in name only, but basically they just slapped the name onto an Osama Bin Ladin-type character rather than make the Mandarin. I think if anything the twist was a good thing, because without getting into details, it meant they screwed the character up a little bit less than they would

I'm concerned that the huge box office numbers will lead to more mediocre comic book movies. If they can half ass a movie this bad and still make huge bank, they'll just stop trying.

Just my opinion. I usually don't harp on a movie I don't like this much, but I was just incredibly disappointed in it (mostly because it looked like it was going to be great). I'm usually the one defending movies, too. Feels strange on the other side, haha.

Yea I wouldnt use great to describe it, it was entertaining yes but great no, i was letdown after seeing it and the more i think about it the more im like well why did they do that, or didnt do this, i dont want to point out those things though and spoil it for some people, but for comic fans there was a major letdown, a ballsy move on marvels part for sure.

I wouldn argue that no movie deserves to be called "great". Movies are for entertainment: a hundred years from now all the "great" movies will have been remade and the originals will seem as dated to us as silent movies from the 1910s seem dated to us today.

The question is not whether the film was great but whether the film entertained. I found it entertaining. I'm starting to think the movie was too sophisticated for most people here. (Shonk mentions bringing kids aged 4 and 6 but

(Shonk mentions bringing kids aged 4 and 6 but this was not a cartoon! This was a movie for adults!) Most people seem to have wanted a movie in which the Iron Man fought a man with magic rings. That's actually a bit sad.

The movie had a plot and a lot of people complained about not being able to follow the plot and that this was the fault of the movie. Well, what if I told you I understood most of what was going on in the movie? The only thing I didn't understand is how Jarvis survived the mansion being destroyed but I'm guessing that Jarvis' server was in the basement of the mansion and most of that survived the attack.

@ShonK, "100% correct in his opinion"? Do you know what the word opinion means? It means it can't be right or wrong. That distinction goes to FACTS, not opinions.

With the first two Iron Man films building a great franchise, and coming off the heels of The Avengers. Everyone, including me were pumped for the third film. The trailers, tv spots and even reviews really backed that up. Until actually viewing it, it was far far from a good movie. Kind of like X-Men 3 where everything was set up, but was such an incredible disappointment.

It was bold but bold doesn't always mean good. They could have made Killian the Mandarin without mocking the style he had in the comics and animated series. That was truly uncalled for. And shows that they rushed the story on this one.

Iron Man 3 was great. Glad it got the HUGE opening. It deserves every penny. I've see it twice already and I'm dying to see it again. Easily my favorite Iron Man film out of the trilogy. Kudos to Black and Downey Jr. for delivering us a hell of a film.

Now bring on Thor 2!

Cool! But...,

I am going to see IM3 tomorrow because I couldn't deal with the idiot teenybopper crowds that would have filled my multiplex this weekend. I am glad to see this movie did well but I am sad to see the poor performance of Pain & Gain which I thought was a fun movie (and I always root for The Rock's movies to perform well). It only had a budget of $26 million so it has recouped the production budget and hasn't opened overseas yet, where Michael Bay films usually perform pretty well. IM3 should

RDJ is Connery

It is not surprising that RDJ is the biggest draw. All of the avengers for the most part are fringe well known. Iron Man is conceptually easy to accept as a concept. Cryo stasis and Gods a bit harder to initially draw. Disney should be happy that their investment in Iron Man matured better than most 401k's, and happy that the tent pole is the bigger draw than any one actor. This is also good for RDJ as they can afford to pay him tons for a fourth and also ensuring that Shank Black and Favreau

Now if Thor: DW and Cap: WS mature $$ then Disney has a strong case for allowing risk with even less known characters in a solid story solo film, as they can expect compounded returns ... Doctor Strange, Black Panther.

Not sure if you saw the movie or not, but from the ending I'm assuming they're phasing Stark out of these movies. I might have one or two more appearances and then be gone I think. At the end of the credits it even said "Tony Stark Will Return", but not "Iron Man will return". I think this is the last solo movie, and I'm okay with that.

I'm perfectly fine with Iron Man 3 being the last film. It was the perfect ending for Tony Stark in terms of solo films.
