Welcome to Level 7: This Week on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Episode 3 / October 8, 2013)

10.09.2013

NOTE: Join us every WEDNESDAY as we review the latest episode...

EPISODE 3: "The Asset"

SYNOPSIS:  When the brilliant scientist Dr. Franklin Hall is kidnapped, Agent Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. agents must race against the clock to locate him. Skye is their only way in -- pushing the team to their limits when the entire plan turns upside-down.

BREAKDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode).

Last week, Agent Coulson's team came together to battle Peruvian soldiers and a HYDRA weapon. This week, they start out with a bang with an impressive sequence featuring a careening tractor trailer and S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicles being tossed into the sky like toys. Soldiers clad in fatigues (will this be the go to for generic bad guys on this show??) break into the truck's cargo hold to reveal Dr. Franklin Hall (Ian Hart) strapped to a chair,

Next we see Ward training Skye aboard their plane as he lectures her about what it takes to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. field agent. I am still wondering how this non-vetted outsider is so easily infiltrating such a high level secret organization. With that, the team is re-routed to the Colorado site of the truck attack. Fitz and Simmons recognize Dr. Hall as a former professor who is also an informant for S.H.I.E.L.D. As they arrive on site, they interview the truck driver, Agent Mack, who describes the invisible attackers. Mack suggests their route was compromised by a mole inside S.H.I.E.L.D.. At that moment, Fitz and Simmons discover some sort of invisible forcefield made of small rocks.

As the team tries to figure out where Hall was taken, Coulson confronts a suspect who may have sold the equipment to the invisible convoy attack squad. They find that the suspects paid for the equipment in gold bars. Analyzing the gold, they ascertain which mine it came from to pinpoint who it could possibly belong to (it's that easy!). Meanwhile we meet the man who kidnapped Hall, a man named Quinn whom Hall recognizes. Quinn and Hall were previously partners and Quinn stole ideas and made millions. He now has kidnapped Hall to try and have him develop a machine using a rare element, gravitonium, that allows the manipulation of gravity. Hall refuses to work for his friend, but the allure of completing his life's work is too appealing.

Convinced they need to infiltrate Quinn's compound and rescue Hall, the team tries to devise a way in during a big party. Skye volunteers to go in. Ward doesn't like it and tells Coulson he doesn't trust Skye's commitment to S.H.I.E.L.D.. Coulson tells Ward to change his approach with her and she may open up. Ward shares a defining moment from his childhood that made him an agent and Skye seems to respect that. Skye is then equipped with a James Bond-like compact that also signals the team when she has found Hall. Melinda May objects to going into the field so Coulson decides to join Ward.

In a nice pink dress, Skye turns heads at Quinn's party using information fed to her remotely by May. Quinn meets Skye and offers her a job to utilize her skills as a hacker. Skye seems vaguely interested. Quinn delivers a speech railing against government regulations on companies like his as he then presents their findings using gravitonium. Dr. Hall activates his machine while Ward and Coulson approach from the beach. Skye explores the house but is caught by Quinn who thinks she is trying to steal trade secrets. She reveals S.H.I.E.L.D. is listening and Quinn takes her to his office where their signal goes dead as she drops it into a glass of champagne.

Skye tells Quinn she is tricking S.H.I.E.L.D. and Quinn responds positively and begins to dissuade Skye that she fits a profile and offers her another chance to join him. Coulson and Ward discover an invisible fence and take down a pair of guards as they wait for Skye to help them into the compound. Skye then triggers her compact signal, allowing Fitz and Simmons to get past the fence. Quinn holds Skye at gunpoint as Coulson finds Hall who refuses to leave his machine. Hall is using the machine to detonate the gravitonium so that no one, including S.H.I.E.L.D. and Quinn, can have the weapon.

As the weapon goes into overdrive, the gravitational field goes out of control, sending Coulson flying. When he stands up, he finds he is on the ceiling and Hall tells him there is no way to stop it. Gravity shifts in crazy directions. Skye disarms Quinn and jumps from the balcony into the water as gravity shifts again. Quinn attempts an escape by helicopter. Hall reveals he leaked his location so that Quinn could find him so that he could destroy the machine. Ward helps Skye escape as gravity keeps getting worse for Hall and Coulson, spinning the room even more. Cutting the power does nothing as the machine is operating on it's own. Coulson shoots the glass floor, sending Hall falling into the gravity generator which absorbs him and shuts itself down.

Coulson takes the machine and has it stored securely, off the books, where no one can find it. May confronts Coulson and says she wants back into active duty on the next mission. Skye is next seen training according to Ward's directions and the two have a bonding moment as she shares her life bouncing from foster home to foster home. Skye admits she wants to be an Agent bad and they continue to train.

The episode ends with a look at the gravity machine being locked away in a safe. As the door locks, the arm of Hall is seen emerging. Could this be our first supervillain on the show? Stay tuned.

MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE REFERENCES:

Dr. Franklin Hall is the name of the supervillain Graviton who has the ability to manipulate graviton molecules, effectively controlling gravity. In the comics, Graviton is a foe to Spider-man, the X-Men, and the West Coast Avengers. Hall also mentions S.H.I.E.L.D.'s attempt to use the Tesseract and how it brought the Chitauri down on New York.

BEST LINE:

"You forget, I saw plenty of action with The Avengers."

COOLEST SCENE:

The rotating room is a pretty impressive play on the INCEPTION hallway scene. The use of practical effects makes this sequence all the better. If we get more of this type of sequence, the show will be the better for it.

DO WE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO COULSON YET?

A vague reference to Coulson's muscle memory not being quite the same may have to do with his fate in THE AVENGERS, but no direct references.

EPISODE CLEARANCE LEVEL: 8/10

A strong entry that doesn't have quite the bumbling hijinks from the last two weeks, this episode is a solid Enemy of the Week entry with some really good special effects.

NEXT ON MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.:

"Eye-Spy" - A former protege of Coulson comes after the team while under the control of some sort of robotic device.

It was good

Last week's was just awful, like a bad Star Trek episode. This week's was like a good episode of Nikita. If you don't like Nikita or Alias then this week's was not for you. (Too serious.) Last week's was more light hearted and it didn't work.

As for people complaining about Fitz and Simmons, well, alas, this is what the show is about. It's not 24 where they are dealing with international terrorists. SHIELD started with Howard Stark designing flying cars and Dr. Abraham Erskine

As for people complaining about Fitz and Simmons, well, alas, this is what the show is about. It's not 24 where they are dealing with international terrorists. SHIELD started with Howard Stark designing flying cars and Dr. Abraham Erskine creating Captain America. Then they found the tesseract and the Red Skulls weapons went about trying to find a way to use it as a clean energy source. Finally they found Thor's hammer and built a facility to study it. Yes, they have agents working for them and yes they are heavily armed but they seem more like Los Alamos than the CIA. I suppose it could be argued that SHIELD has become more militaristic in response to threats like the Hulk, the Abomination, Loki and the Chitari.

No offense but...

I was hoping this would be more of a review and not just a re-telling of the plot.

BTW I'm excited for the possibility of seeing an actual supervillain (Graviton) in the future. Let's hope they run with that ball and not just stick us with more Agents of B.L.A.N.D.

The show is a big bag of MEH

Typical Whedon TV really. I watched Ep 1 and was far from impressed. Skipped Ep 2, had better things to do. Watched Ep 3 and again I was far from impressed. I could care less for any of the characters and honestly the show makes me care less for Coulson as well. A character I loved in the films is watered down and bland in the show, he is changed. Less campy, more serious type tones and frankly very different. I will give the show one more viewing but knowing Whedon's past TV outings I

Side note - I did watch all episodes of Firefly on netflix but it was certainly not due to the writing or direction, it was due to the actors and the chemistry they had. This show lacks any of that whatsoever. I could give a S#!* less about anyone on this show and wish they would start killing them off to bring in some fresh blood, and I have seen 2 episodes. I know I know, let it develop but why? Nothing grabs my attention makes me want to wait for it to happen. This ball appears to have been fumbled on 1st down.

I'm not sure...

I don't feel invested in these characters and man I'm just getting annoyed with all of them.

Kill Simmons

Having two of the same character is useless, especially when they're the worst characters in the show.

Fitz has the odd moment of humour and delivery, Simmons delivery is awful, and she has a grating and terrible over-pronounced British accent. The only way I could care about such an awful character is to see her brains emptied and watching the aftermath of Fitz mourning over her and their involvement in the field.

After disliking the first two, especially last weeks, I enjoyed this one a little more. Those lab nerds need to be either seriously dialed back or killed off. Preferably the latter.

Wouldn't you think when Ward was teaching Skye about how to be a SHIELD agent he would have mentioned not to touch your ear when covertly communicating with HQ!

If there was just one, it would still be annoying but at least we could tolerate it. But TWO! WHY do we need TWO of these characters! UGH

i can't stand Skye

yes shes hot...but her character makes no sense! First she makes me a comment about being a high School drop out but yet somehow she became the worlds greatest hacker?? So Coulson sets up this superteam but if they hadn't stumbled on skye they wouldn't have any computer Geniuses on board? and somehow on thier third mission they trust her enough on go solo on tough mission?? it makes no sense.

Ed Snowden, currently the most wanted 'hacker' on Planet Earth, is a high school dropout.

Just sayin'

@TarantinoDark, technically Snowden is not a hacker since he was given direct clearance to view and analyze the information he leaked to the public.
Only skills he really needed were ability to turn on computer, use MS Word, and read.

No Mick, Snowden is not a hacker *subjectively*. But *technically*, on the other hand, Snowden IS a hacker, as his actions do indeed fit the legal definition of "hacking".

Skye is awesome

Skye in that dress running while wet shaking her boobs. The director knows what guys like. ;) Episode was good too, I see a lot of conflict with people disagreeeing with Shield's views.

I don't think people are disagreeing with SHIELD's views, so much as disagreeing with how poorly the show has been written so far.

But it is only 3 episodes in, plenty of time and potential to turn things around.

I think the best line was the henchman saying "kid's got balls" with Skye replying "thanks, but yucks."

For a TV show made with the primary purpose of cashing in on a successful movie series, it's really not that bad at all and I've found it quite entertaining. The cold open on this episode was cool; the visual gag of what appears to be a stereotypical trucker working with a holographic touch-screen HUD on his truck windscreen was inspired. The production values have been consistently high

I am also madly in love with Chloe Bennet. Excuse me while I go weep.

garbage 3

if this show keeps on this pace without showing real solid characters from the marvel universe I see ABC pulling the plug....the highest ratting was week 1 .obviously because everyone was gas up for this show....so u got the guy with the magic arms...who cares....a plane explosion...who cares...and now this episode that just shows the potential to something but could be nothing if this show gets cancelled. ..the team assembled now is garbage....just regular [link]!!! no super heros...one guest

"no super heros...one guest appearance from SJ"

So the title of the show isn't descriptive enough? It wasn't meant to have superheroes as the focus of the show, although there will likely be various guest appearances later on. Nor should it be expected for Sam Jackson to be there all the time either.

I agree with Jasper. The fact that they have Sam Jackson making guest appearances on the show is huge! And I think that's actually to their detriment that so far they've had to rely on cameos from the movies (Cobie Smulders in ep. 1). The show would actually improve if they could manage to steer clear of cameos from the Avengers. That way when they do inevitably make appearances on the show, it will be that much more impactful. I expect to see Scarlett Johansson or Chris Evans in an episode closer to the season finale in the spring for some Cap 2 marketing. But it won't mean that much if w have Chris Hemsworth on next week, RDJ the week after that, Sam Jackson on every other week, and Mark Ruffalo as a supporting character.

One more chance...

I was not impressed with the first two episodes but will give the show one more shot. I want to like it but I honestly have no interest in any of the characters so far. So many better shows to watch this season...

Coulson and Skye make the show watchable. The young cast still makes this feel like more of a show for kids, unlike the Marvel movies which seem to have equal appeal to kids and adults. I'm still willing to give it a chance, but it seems to lack the charm of Whedon's best work.

I know what you mean. The show has a very watered down, ABC Spark feel to it. I'd like to see them replace some of the cast with older more veteran looking characters. But keep Skye.....that's alllllllright.
