Whannell and Wan to weave a new tale of terror for Insidious 2

Okay, that last bit isn't technically true as the movie hasn't been given a title yet. But I can safely say that a sequel to last year's hit possession movie has been commissioned, with writer Leigh Whannell (SAW, DEAD SILENCE) set to return and director James Wan (SAW, DEAD SILENCE) "in negotiations." And if you find yourself surprised by this news in the least? Don't be. The movie was "released [last] April and scared up almost $100 million worldwide on a budget of only $1.5 million." When you make bank like that you go back to the well, and I may have just mixed my metaphors but I still stand by the principle of what I meant to say. Sh*t's inevitable.

"The sequel is scheduled to go into production this year for a 2013 release," though nothing has yet been said as to who (if any) of the original cast will be returning, or if they do, in what form they will find themselves. Will it it be the same people, their story continued? New people, different "house?" It's a bit hard to hypothesize where the movie might go without drifting into spoiler territory so I'll just stop now. My bigger question is as to just where this will fall in James Wan's schedule considering the other movie he's got going, but I bet we'll be finding out sooner rather than later.

Extra Tidbit: Think that INSIDIOUS could go the way of SAW, or is it by nature a different kind of story that doesn't allow for six sequels?

I thought the first one was a decent horror movie. I think most horror movies suck nowadays and it is nice to see these guys doing things different. They don't do Japanese horror remakes and slasher films with annoying teenagers we don't care about. They created new ways to scare people. Dead Silence was fun and Insidious was too. My only complaint from Insidious though is it suffered from showing too much of the monster syndrome. They didn't keep the red faced bastard mysterious enough. I will

blah

never got the love for the first one. It was just bad, laughably bad. A lot of talent on board but it ended up being a trainwreck, so many of the 'scary' parts were unintentionally funny, and the rest just fell flat. But, I can't blame them -- it's one hell of a smart business move considering the cash it raked in... I'm interested in seeing what the budget of this one will be now, or if they'll be smart and just keep it low again.

I'm only down for it if it's Whannell and that other Ghostbuster guy moving on to a new case. They missed all the finale action from the first film so they could still be around. Maybe the house was just empty and it's a great mystery that they struggle to solve while trying another case. As Saw II was the only worthy sequel it would be nice if they stopped after a second Insidious, but they won't.
Oh yeah, and Sid better return. That's what I named the red Darth Maul guy and that nickname

Whenever a sequel is announced, a lot of people complain that it isn't necessary. But let me ask you this. Has there EVER been a necessary sequel? I have no problem at all with sequels. If I like something, I tend to want more of it. After banging a hot chick, I want more. A lot more. Same with movies. Same with Insidious.

I love anything Whannell and Wan work on together however I agree that it doesn't really need a sequel but money talks. I don't doubt if they are both involved that it won't be a worthy follow up.

First one was great. Does not need a sequel.

But the idea of both of them coming back does give the sequel some credit.

I kinda like the ending of Insidious. And I don't think it's necessary to further it out.
