What Chris Evans thinks about his Captain America costume

07.07.2010

We haven't heard a whole hell of a lot from Chris Evans since he landed the gig of his career as Captain America a few weeks ago. But recently he spoke to Empire about one of the most talked about aspects of the role: the costume.

What’s his opinion on the get-up, which we’ve only seen in concept art so far?

"It’s an amazing costume. Given the fact that his costume is red, white and blue, and it’s tight, and it could be kind of flash and over the top – and given the fact that the movie takes place in the ‘40s and ‘50s – they’ve done a really good job of making it look really cool."

"I think everyone that’s going to see it is going to say, 'Okay, well done. Well done. I think they got the costume right. The casting they completely ruined, but the costume they nailed!'"

Haaa, funny guy.

He says it’s quite a bit bulkier than his FANTASTIC FOUR outfit, but that thing was like a scuba suit so that’s to be expected. And what about the crown jewel of the costume, the shield?

“We’ve been testing a lot of shields. Last time I was in London they had six shields and I had to hold each one, see if I was comfortable with each one, see which one we all thought had the right look. The thing is pretty heavy, so I’m not sure I can throw it that far! I’ll give it my best shot, but hopefully they’ll have some sort of stunt shield when it comes to actually chucking it!”

Evans is reportedly playing a lot of ultimate frisbee to train for shield combat. Just kidding, but how exactly do you train for shield fighting anyway? I’m very curious to see how the hell those fight scenes are going to look, and I would assume the shield would be CGI when it’s zipping around knocking Nazi’s heads off.

Extra Tidbit: Now if they were smart, this would be a perfect time to release a shot of him actually IN costume to ramp up buzz even further.

it's starting to look like Captain America could be the next big superhero franchise. here's hoping it's good...but I'm gonna see it anyway to see Chris in that hot tight red white and blue

Nice suspenders...

Suspenders to make the red and white stripes on the torso? Parts look like some sort of "armor" like material? No wings on the head? And if I remember right, in the comics, the shield Capt. America used in WW2 wasn't round. Is it so hard to do things right? I mean, do I have to even go into Thor?

The casting doesn't bother me to much, and i am glad he's excited for the costume. This is shaping up to be amazing.

I read somewhere...

that if Thor isn't all that great and Captain America falls on its face we can very well be seeing the downfall of Marvel movies. I have to agree. Its seems that DC is getting its ass in gear and with Green Lantern coming out next summer, we can be seeing DC reign in the movie dept again!

But given Marvel's track record, do you expect that happen?

I, most assuredly, am not expecting that, and think this and "Thor" will be incredible.

I really don't know too much about the Captain America backstory. Whether he was sarcastic and snide or brooding and serious. Either way, I hope he doesn't go too over the top with it. Still, the costume looks pretty solid.

It will be ok.

Chris Evans as Captain America I think is a good choice.the guy is a good actor and when the time comes I think he'll do the best job possible because the fans will be pissed if he does'nt.

Just For S&Gs...

Chris Evans will (technically speaking) be playing 2 of Marvel Comics (way back then Timely Comics) first 3 superheroes. Captain America and the Human Torch. Let him play Namor, The Sub-Mariner in that movie and he'll have the triple play.

Wasn't the original Human Torch (i.e. the one associated with the beginning of Captain America & in The Invaders) actually an android, and thus not the same one who was a member of the Fantastic Four (Evans' previous Marvel character Johnny Storm)? I've never read any Captain America so I could be wrong but seem to remember seeing that somewhere when I looked into The Invaders following Joe Johnson's comments a little while back that they would be heavily involved in the second half of the

Anyway, bit of a non-story as in fairness Evans is hardly going to come out slagging off his costume whilst Marvel are looking to increase interest but still good to know things are moving forward with costume tests, etc.! Hoping there'll be some real details revealed at Comic Con which'll make it online soon after though!!

P.S. Hi, I'm new here!

TS84's right, the Human Torch in the Invaders with Cap and Namor was a different character. Similar name and burny-looks, but a different character n time-period.

YES!

Captain America, thanks to Chris Evans IMO, may turn out to be only my second marvel film I think is good, first being HULK (Ang Lee version).

Iron Man, falls at a near 3rd, but I think Iron Man could of been done a little differently. It's fun, I'll give you that.

Those poor poor Nazi's

They're in for a world of hurt. I'm pretty damn pumped for this movie now that it's started filming. Or has it? Regardless, I'm glad he got the part and the comment about the casting had me cracking up. Seems like a legitimately humble and cool guy. Needs to go to Joblo sometime to get his self esteem back up. Good to see most of the community rallying behind him. Long live Cap!

Did Anyone Know . . .

. . . that Joss Whedon, future director of The Avengers, is doing rewrites on the Captain America script? I was looking up the IMDb page and I saw his name on the credits, so I did further research and found some more reports on this. Personally, I like Joss Whedon as a writer (and he has worked as a script doctor in the past), so this gives me hope for the film. It might help him better transition to his Avengers movie.

I was actually one of the people that wanted him to play Cap. before he was casted. Same with Ryan Reynolds as Lantern. I am sure they will both do a great job. They bother have similar humor and kindness :)

combat

I hope they get the shield combat right as well as it can be pretty bad ass. There are fewer things cool then seeing someone on the page jump out of a helicopter sky diving shield first and just crushing someone under it. Hope we get to see it in live action in this flick.

At least he knows the fan backlash upon the casting news. I can respect him a little more because of this. But you know what, maybe the casting isn't wrong afterall. I know everyone was up in arms when other casting announcements came out *cough* The Joker *cough*...so this might turn out to be good. Also, at least they're trying to keep the costume the way it should be instead of fucking with it.

This is great news. Glad to see the movie moving forward and not having any problems. Reading more and more about the costume and shield is making my interest really high, but agreeing with the tidbit, they should release a photo of him in the suit already or at least a poster. I think the movie is going to be great and think that Evans is going to surprise a lot of people in the end.
