What could have been: 82 alternate Deadpool designs from X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Dec. 12, 2012by:

In what can be considered one of the biggest superhero clusterf*cks of all time, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE somehow managed to mess up Deadpool. The Merc with the Mouth is one of the easiest characters to get right. All they had to do was let Ryan Reynolds play his smartass self and wear the costume and you were already pretty much there.

So, even though the character in the movie was referred to as Weapon XI and not Deadpool, we still know who it was. Visually, he did nothing for most fans but apparently that was just one of many options the filmmakers had to choose from. According to this video released on YouTube from effects studio Amalgamated Design, there were 82 designs to select from. They truly run the gamut from alien to some that kind of look like Bane from THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

From the YouTube page: "Here, in quick succession, are 82 variations on Deadpool. It was our job to satisfy the many creative voices on the show, from director Gavin Hood to the producers and studio, so we generated a huge selection of artwork from complete direction changes to subtle variations like tweaks to eye color. This is why having a design phase at the start of preproduction is so valuable. We'll never satisfy everyone with a design, but an exploratory like this lets us consider the options."

Take a look at the images and see if you prefer any of the final product. There are one or two that are kind of cool, but none of them are quite right for Deadpool.

At first I thought "out of 82, there must be some better than the crap in the final movie", but then I watched the video. Clearly they had no idea who or what the character was from the very beginning.

LOL at the early bit where they massively "improved" a design by, uh, just drawing some hair on it. Genius! I was disappointed when they didn't follow it up with variations on facial hair and styles of reading glasses.

The final few were the funniest, though. "Do you think he'd look a bit more like Deadpool if we drew Deadpool eye-shapes around his eyes?"

Is it just me or did every single one of those slides completely suck? I'm starting to wonder if they really know who Deadpool is or they thought they were creating a character from scratch. Not one of those drawings looks like it was inspired by the comics.

wow. talk about taking something easy and making it impossible

If only there had been some sort of source material that could have guided them like thousands of pages of comic books or something...

I don't like continuity errors in film series, but Fox has my blessing to completely ignore the first Wolverine movie.

Those scumbags!!

It's MERC WITH A MOUTH... not Merc WITHOUT a mouth. How retarded are the people working for Fox?? They wanted to make his face look like his mask? What idiots! I hope they all get hit by santas sleigh if they are still alive from previous wishes for them to chug a bottle of draino.

What does Deadpool look like under his mask?

Im not a comic book expert on the X-Men so dont know a lot about Deadpool in fact, my awareness to him is limited to the Hulk Vs Wolverine animated movie and Wolverine: Origins movie. With that in mind, and the fact that the DVD extra shows that he survives being decapitated, is it not possible that the look given to him in the movie is simply what he looks like under the mask? I mean, in Hulk Vs Wolverine animated movie he puts his arm back together after having it sliced by Wolverine

It changes a little depending on the artist, but usually he looks like Freddy Krueger.

If you saw Captain America- He looks like Red Skull but really, really dirty. Like imagine if instead of being simply red skinned with no nose or hair like Red Skull actually is, he's got bits of hair still on his head, his flesh is all different degrees of scarring and decay, etc.

Utter Shit

Everyone that had anything to do with any of those designs should be banished to working in state controlled TV in North Korea. Such utter crap for such an incredible character.

It's pretty much been said plenty of times but I must agree, Deadpool never showed up in origins. Each of those designs are horrid and makes me wonder who the hell thought any of them or even the final product would be okay.

Huh?

To echo previous sentiment I was never sure that WAS Deadpool. Wade Wilson in the beginning, yes. Then I thought they kind of used his body as a husk and added all these powers or whatever to it, but I didn't think that was Deadpool. They call him that in these test photos so maybe I was wrong.

Man, I remember all the panic when pictures of the Deadpool movie action figure leaked, and it was...that thing. Everyone was hoping and praying that it was some sort of bizarre packaging mistake...little did we know how horribly wrong we were. Turning Deadpool into Weapon XI was the final nail in the coffin, and turned a pretty average film into a mediocre one.

Weapon XI

not Deadpool. Deadpool wasn't even in the movie in my mind, Wade Wilson was in there at the start, who becomes Deadpool later, but the Deadpool character... not in the movie. Weapon XI was, and he sucked. But not Deadpool. I refuse to acknowledge that lazy mess of a character as Deadpool, just as Deadpool would refuse as well.

God.

They just start getting weird(er) towards the end.

I heard that the script for the Deadpool film has a line taking a stab at how his character was treated in Wolverine. I find it appropriate because hot damn these are awful.

So at no point in time, did anyone say, "hey, what if we didn't put swords in his wrists and make him look like an alien crackhead?"

I'm guessing, since that's the basic theme of all these...things.

Deadpool was barely in Wolverine. Just a cameo played by Reynolds in the beginning. I dont know who or what that thing was at the end, but it wasnt deadpool
