What could have been: A make-up test featuring Frodo under the effects of the One Ring

Dec. 20, 2012by: Alex Maidy

There was at one point going to be a scene in THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS portraying Frodo (Elijah Wood) under the effects of the One Ring. The scene was a vision had by Faramir that would have shown Frodo devolving into a Gollum-like creature after having possessed the ring for too long. The scene is discussed briefly in the special features included with the expanded edition of THE TWO TOWERS.

Comic Book Movie posted an anonymous behind the scenes image that shows a clearer look at Elijah Wood with the make-up on. The effect is quite disturbing. Peter Jackson had to make some concessions and he probably didn't want to do the scene if it was not absolutely perfect.

Check out Frollum below.

It is always interesting to see what could have been, especially from projects as deeply documented as THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Peter Jackson always does a great job of chronicling the entire journey of his films to the big screen.

With THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY crossing the $100 million mark in box office yesterday, it will be interesting to see how much more will be added when those films hit Blu-ray and where Jackson will lend his talents next.

I think the reason they didn't use it, is because they wanted Faramir to take the hobbits to Osgiliath. The reason Faramir does this is because he doesn't yet understand what the ring is capable of and what it's doing to Frodo. He finally gets it when Frodo pulls Sting on Sam during the Nazgul attack. However, if Faramir had seen Frodo go apeshit in front of him...he'd let him go then and there...like the book actually.

Anyway...it's a cool idea and they could have made it work elsewhere

Anyway...it's a cool idea and they could have made it work elsewhere in the film, but it's ultimately not really necessary. We know what's happening to Frodo...we don't really need to see it.

heh

They touch on this in the special features of LotR but it wasn't part of Faramir's vision's flash backs. What this was to be was essentially show what happened to Bilbo in Fellowship (the freak out at Rivendel) is happening to Frodo. Faramir demands the ring from Frodo but he freaks out and runs to a corner and Faramir sees him like this and then decides to not take the ring. If i recall they cut it due to time constraints as they had to get each installment to 3 hrs for theatrical release. I

I think its part there but you don't get any of Frodo looking crazy.

Holy &@!, that looks disturbing! I'm not quite sure why, but I think I'm glad that they did not use it....

Perhaps a more likely reason is that Wood couldn't pull it off, *ahem*. Jackson isn't one to shy away from filming extra scenes.
