What did you think of...Captain America: The Winter Soldier?

Apr. 4, 2014by: Paul Shirey

Cap is back!

One of the most hotly anticipated Marvel films in the Phase Two line up has finally arrived! CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, once again starring Chris Evans as the star-spangled "man out of time" is the third appearance of Evans as the titular hero after CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER and THE AVENGERS. This time, Cap is trying to acclimate to present-day America and find his place in a "brave new world" while still working for the shady government agency S.H.I.E.L.D. Partnering with teammates Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and new friend Sam Wilson aka The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Cap finds himself at odds not only with his modern-day mentor, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), but also new and lurking threats, including a blast from the past, The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), who disrupts everything he has come to know. With a terrific supporting cast, including Robert Redford, Cobie Smulders, Emily VanCamp, Hayley Atwell, Frank Grillo, etc., along with directors Anthony and Joe Russo, this entry in the MCU has been long-touted as the cinematic rival of THE AVENGERS in terms of size, scope, and action. You can read JimmyO's review of the film here (and his video review here) and Eric Walkuski's review here. You can catch up on all the trailers, TV spots, clips, and featurettes by clicking below!

Bloody Brilliant

The best solo adventure to date for me. Anthony Mackie was amazing as Falcon. Great action, great characterization for Cap and Black Widow. Loved it!

One thing though...

Where the hell was Hawkeye? I mean he an agent of shield and Black Widows male counterpart. It's seem strange that he wasn't in the movie or at least referenced.

I thought it was pretty damn good.

Loved Robert Redford classing the place up. His performance reminded me of when he did Spy Game. I also like how they dropped the name Stephen Strange. I'm dying to see a Dr. Strange movie, and having him actually mentioned makes me feel like it's actually gonna happen.

Absolutetly awesome!!! They showed him not really holding back when he's fighting regular humans and I loved it! You got to see just how powerful he really is. The plot was great and even though they had a lot going on the blended everything together very well. I can't wait for it on bluray now so I can watch em all. Oh and SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll be nice and out it way down so you have to click to see ;)

Loved it! The whole movie felt original and fresh. They took risks, had some plot twists that will affect future films, and this has to be the only movie where (minor spoiler) the villain is still loose at the end! I love when every single villain isn't defeated or killed by the end. This exceeded my expectations in every way

Great action movie

Overall, a great action movie. Hard to compare this to Avengers as this was way more grounded (which is the best way to keep the Cap movies). Story was excellent. Action was excellent. Comedy was funny without being distracting. Marvel surely keeps raising the bar before DC can even begin to compete in this market.

Loved it! I thought I was sick of superhero movies... guess not! Falcon kicked ass (Anthony Mackie was awesome), Black Widow had her best role yet, friggin Robert Redford, and of course Chris Evans himself... it was like a mini-Avengers in itself. In fact, thanks to the political thriller elements, I'd say it's my favorite Marvel movie yet!

Loved the movie,but . . . . .

It's called "The Winter Soldier" only it wasn't about the winter soldier and the character was only on screen for maybe a total of ten minutes tops. That confused me a little, but overall a great action/superhero movie.

HYDRA killed Tony Stark's parents. Pretty badass when S.H.I.E.L.D. Gets taken down. No more...makes one wonder how the show will function. Love the quicksilver cameo during the end credits. :) count down to the bitching about spoilers in 3...2...1...

OK.

It was OK. The best film in the Avengers canon but that's not really saying much. It's hard to watch these stand alone films post Avengers because you always have in the back of your mind as to why do they not team up since they are in the same universe.

I can understand that. Luckily, as a former comic reader, I learned to stop wondering why everyone doesn't show up by age 13.

Not everyone who watches these films are devout comic readers. These standalone films make it a point to give fan service mentions of Avengers. They want you to know this is all the same universe. The thing is they don't clarify why no one else shows up. They just treat these films as fan service for the inevitable Avenger films. The world is in danger yet again. Where is Tony Stark? Where is Bruce Banner? They make it a point to mention them but don't address why they are nowhere to be found

Long story short, these standalone films have no real purpose.

The words Screw Batman vs. Superman came to mind during the finial battle.

It was great. the plot was intelligent and it managed to be relevant without being preachy (cough, cough, Noah), the action was excellent with some of the best fight scenes in recent memory, the trademark Marvel humor was as effective as ever, a lot of great references to the original and the rest of the cinematic universe, but what I loved above all else was the portrayal of Fury. Its what I've been waiting to see since he first showed up, he was a badass leader who made some questionable

Its what I've been waiting to see since he first showed up, he was a badass leader who made some questionable decisions but ultimately came off as a good guy, and the movie finial showed him kicking some ass in that chase which was probably the coolest scene in the movie. All in all this is the coolest movie of the year, at least until Guardians of the Galaxy, or X-Men Days of Future Past, or The Raid 2, God this is a great year for movies!

LOVED IT

Only thing I hate about these movies is at the end while walking out, you hear so many stupid theories from people. Or even worse people talking as if theyve always been reading the comics and telling their friends what happens and they get all the info backwards but they say it with such conviction because they read it off a wiki page.

Also, I really liked the mid credits sequence, which was great for me because I absolutely HATED the mid credits scene in Thor the dark world.

Best of phase 2

Iron Man 3 and Thor The Dark World were good but I were still kind of disappointing. This was a fantastic movie. I absolutely loved it. Easily in the top ten best comic book movies ever.

I truly was impressed with the subtle comedy the Russo's injected into the film. It really was like watching Community and Arrested Development in a superhero genre!

Other than Avengers, the best Marvel movie. I've never seen Cap as such a bad ass, the fights were done really well, maybe the best of any comic book movie, made me jealous as a Batman fan. Why can't Bats get that kinda fight scenes.

Really? I dunno, maybe I'm a blind fanboy, but I thought the action scenes in TDK and TDKR were better, just 'cause they were more clearly shot... the fight scenes in Cap 2 were frigging AWESOME, but sometimes they were cut a bit too close for perfect clarity in my mind.

Well, it's definitely the best superhero movie since The Dark Knight. And in a lot of ways it's a better interpretation of the comic book character than TDK is of Batman. While I still felt like TDK was all around the better movie, TWS has it beat at least in action. There's some nice set pieces with Cap and Black Widow here, but the stand out sequence in the whole movie, imo, was Fury's car chase.

Absolutely awesome!

It wasn't a perfect movie, but it was the best Marvel one I've seen (far better than the original Iron Man) other than The Avengers (and it was actually a better technical movie, but obviously lacked the coolness of Hulk fighting Thor). Every part of it was well done and left me wanting even more.

i have 2 problems with the movie

the first was that i thought it couldve been funnier. I know thats a hard request for a Spy/Superhero movie, but look at who's directing. These guys are masters at comedy and there wasn't many laughs here. i thought they couldve interwoven the humor very smoothly. The movie itself was like Capt America, cleaver and diverse in the action. there was some humor in his no none sense fighting style (why drag out a fight when i can just kick him overboard). but Captain America is not a funny guy.

There were no comic relief characters, it was all dry stiff humor that just pales to the rest of the Marvel movies.

The second problem was treating Black Widow like a love interest. She shouldve been in the beginning for the one joke she has and the one job only she can do. and then replace her with Agent 13. Someone who the Captain can have a deeper relationship with, room to meet each other and grow. i wouldve much rather Agent 13 be the female lead here and just give Black Widow her own movie

aside from that it was a great film

Agents of SHIELD

I take it everyone here has seen the movie, so it doesnt matter if i post a spoiler in the comments? You've been warned...

SPOILER!!!

What does this mean for the tv show? SHIELD has dissolved and no longer operational after the events of "CAWS". Is the team going to go rouge and answer to only themselves? What about other characters like Paxton and the universities? Was this their plan all along to only have one season and then move on to a different Marvel tv series (Agent Carter)?

What about other characters like Paxton and the universities? Was this their plan all along to only have one season and then move on to a different Marvel tv series (Agent Carter)? Will Coulson ever get his answers from Fury, and how will he take the news that the organization that betrayed him is no longer operational. Is May a Hydra agent? So many questions.

We know that the events of "Agents of SHIELD" happen parallel to that of the movies and in almost real time (ie events of Thor 2 happened in Nov and Capt America 2 in April and the TV series filling in the gaps). Agent Sitwell was just in the last episode about to go on a mission when he got called away for other business (beginning of CAWS?) So this would fit in well that the team is betrayed the very moment it is revealed SHIELD has Hydra members in it's ranks.

People have to continue watching the show. it doesnt look like it will continue much longer after the events of "CAWS" and it does have it's share of good episodes. im now super excited for this weeks episode.

I'm guessing SHIELD will still exist in some small and secretive way.
Nick Fury seems like he will continue to try and weed out the remnants of Hydra and perhaps this is what the show ends up doing as well...

Question for comic book fans

Just saw the movie and thought it was way better than the 1st movie until the ending where it ends so abruptly. So does this movie not cover the whole winter soldier arc because my only complaint was that like HOBBIT DESOLATION OF SMAUG and HUGER GAMES it seems they are just trying to stall it? Other than that the movie was pretty good besides some plotholes.

There is much more to The Winter Soldier story after the events of this film. It was more or less pretty close to the comic but maybe covered about a third of the big return of Bucky Barnes story. In the comics Bucky even becomes Captain America for a brief period after Steve in seemingly "killed".

The actual Winter Soldier story in the comics is pretty different to how the movies have played out, but the basic elements are there and the film turned out pretty good.

About as legit as a Marvel film gets...

The Russo's and Marvel Studios as a whole get it. They understood what makes a modern tale for Captain America so damn great and entertaining. I loved this movie. Fantastic, memorable set pieces and action, solid dialogue, and one hell of a great new character in The Winter Soldier. Hat's off to Marvel. Shit in the MCU just got real.

My favorite so far and the directing team behind select episodes of Community was a brilliant choice.

The rest of the phase 2 films need to step up their game. And the use of more practical effects over visual fx was why this one looked phenomenal

Legitimately Great

It's an absolute blast of a conspiracy thriller that delves into far richer themes than any of the previous MCU movies before it, and it replaces the campy tone of Cap 1 with a grittier take. Easily the best of the phase 2 movies so far, and the best MCU movie after Iron Man and Avengers. We really get to "know" Captain America/Rogers in this movie. I felt the story of the first movie was rushed b/c they were trying to cover a lot of story, but only had 1 film to do it before Avengers. Captain America was the one hero I thought could have used 2 films before Avengers. Obviously Avengers was a group effort so they couldn't spend as much time on him.

I thought all the actors did a good job in their roles, and no one felt wasted (like Cheadle in the Iron Man films or Portman in the Thor films). Not quite as good as other superhero sequels like Dark Knight, Spider-man 2, or X-2, but its very close.

5/10.

The 1st one was a mix between superhero movie and '40s war movie, and it worked for the most part. This one is a mix between superhero movie and '70s spy thriller, and those two dont blend well. It works in AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. because the main characters arent superheroes.

Specially Scarlett Johansson, whose line delivery falls flat half of the movie, and Robert Redford, whose line delivery falls flat the whole movie. You can play a serious character without being bland.

Don't see it in 3D. Even the 'still' shots of people talking have hand-held camera movement, only the person holding the camera has Parkinson's disease. The action sequences are way worse, but nowhere near as bad as Greenglass' Bourne movie.

DaForce, I didn't see it in 3D. And you're right that the cinematography sucks. Too bad there's not a category for that in the Razzies.

Shaky Cam

how bad was it? I am seeing it this weekend - I was really looking forward to it big time, but shaky cam (in anything other than evil dead) is an instant fail in my book. Why spend so much time and effort (and money) into an action scene that you cant see! It has ruined so many other movies that were good until shaky cam showed up.

I hate shakycam too. The opening action scene is very shakycam-heavy, which actually worried me (I hated the aggressive shakycam in Man of Steel) but the movie fortunately drops it. It's still handheld during fight scenes but it drops the obnoxious over-shakiness.

Ok well if its not too bad I can handle it. I was ok during MOS but by now I am used it. I hate the Bourne films because of it - I just cant get excited. the worst of all time was the Kingdom - that was a great film until the last half was all shaky cam - i was totally taken out of the entire film after that.

Easily my favorite Marvel Studios film so far

This is really an excellent movie. What a way to kickoff summer movie season 2014. I loved the political spy tone. I loved the story. Every actor was on point (even Sam Jackson who I recently gave a little ranting about being overrated). This has some of the best action as well. They really play the whole supersoldier thing in contrast to a more realistic world than we get in other Marvel movies, which I love. When it comes to my comic movies, I guess my preferences lean towards films

On a side note, I loved the credits scenes. Even the final one with Bucky, while not really revealing in any way, was very intense and quite the cliffhanger. Bring on Cap 3! (or Avengers 2, if they include the Winter Soldier :) )

I liked it, but the first Cap movie was better. Only because this movie seemed a bit choppy and not knowing where it was going at times even though the story was simple. Also the godawful shaky-cam fight scenes sucked balls as did the camera work for the rest of the movie (Steadicam was invented for a reason). If I had seen this in 3D, I would have walked out after the first action scene and gotten my money back.

MUCH better than CA1, but not perfect

A huge improvement over the first film, and especially with showing off Cap's abilities as he kicked so much more ass in this film and really seemed liked a superhero. Took a bit too long to really get into the Winter soldier story, but both him and Falcon were good characters and I look forward to seeing them again. Damn that shaky cam though, I hate it when directors use shaky cam to make fight scenes look hectic, all it does is prevent you from clearly seeing what the hell is going on!

I liked it but it wasn't great...

The fight scenes were good, but waaaay too choppy. The quick cuts and shaky cam really ruined a lot of great moments. I also think the plot was flawed. It was another superhero movie with a subpar villain and a lack of reveal. They should have done more with Redford, there was no connection between him and Hydra. Also, SHIELD being Hydra is something Tony Stark should have figured out long ago. It just tried to be different and I applaud that, but it could have been much better. I still liked

I checked Wikipedia for Hydra's history, and at one point, it's found out that Hydra did in fact run SHIELD. It even says they ran SHIELD from the beginning. Not sure if it lines up with Winter Soldier, though.

My favorite so far and the directing team behind select episodes of Community was a brilliant choice.

The rest of the phase 2 films need to step up their game. And the use of more practical effects over visual fx was why this one looked phenomenal

The best marvel movie so far

Would give it a 8/10. Even though i had a few drinks before seing it, Im pretty sure it's my favourite marvel movie so far. I'm a little bit tired of only large scale superhero fights a la avengers (even though it was awesome) and MoS, so it was great that Captain America: WS had many more gounded actionscenes. Especially the first couple of action scenes with the the winter solidier was great.

Solid 8/10

I'm not going to give in to hyperbole here: this WASN'T the "Dark Knight" of Marvel movies. But it was ambitious enough to give it a run for its money, and that's really all anyone could ask for. Simply put, it's a phenomenal movie; perhaps the best, most well-written, most exciting Marvel solo film ever...and at the very least, on the same level as The Avengers (although as of right now, I'm certainly leaning towards ranking The Winter Soldier slightly ahead).

Fantastic, fully fleshed-out,

Simply put, it's a phenomenal movie; perhaps the best, most well-written, most exciting Marvel solo film ever...and at the very least, on the same level as The Avengers (although as of right now, I'm certainly leaning towards ranking The Winter Soldier slightly ahead).

Fantastic, fully fleshed-out, completely 3-dimensional characters that ALL somehow manage to get their fair share of screentime (from the 'main 3' of Cap, Black Widow, and Falcon, to Nick Fury and Alexander Pierce, to Winter Soldier, and even to minor characters like Sharon Carter, Maria Hill, and Brock Rumlow), exhilarating action scenes that are perfectly set up and follow a natural progression, surprising levels of emotion and sobriety that certainly makes this Marvel's most serious and cathartic film yet, massive amounts of relevant themes that are almost scarily accurate in the world we live in today (keep in mind this was ALREADY filming when the NSA and Edward Snowden news broke), an obvious attention to detail in bringing this film full circle with the origin story in The First Avenger and the "semi-sequel" of The Avengers...this film delivered on almost all aspects.

I do have a few legitimate gripes (didn't it seem a BIT rushed that SHIELD would turn that quickly on Cap? A single 5 minute conversation where he doesn't divulge all info, and that was the last straw apparently?), but no movie is perfect. This was well worth my time and money and it's an absolute game-changer in the MCU. I can't wait to see where Avengers 2 (and the already-confirmed Captain America 3) take us...but even more than that, I have a burning desire to re-watch The First Avenger, The Avengers, and then The Winter Soldier once more. That last statement alone proves how successful this movie was, and it's perhaps the highest praise I can give it.

Even if anyone took these unofficial, arbitrary, "insert number out of 10" ranking systems that I got off the top of my head seriously, you do realize a movie that's rated a 7 or 8 is still insanely good, right? And besides, I never once said "slightly better" than The Avengers. I said I'm still thinking about RANKING it ahead, meaning the experience as a whole is at the same level, if not a bit higher, than my experience with The Avengers. It's completely subjective and by no means official.

8/10. Excellent film, easily better than the first. My main problem with the first film was that it simply wasn't that interesting. Steve Rogers came off as very vanilla, which I suppose he is in the grand scheme of the Marvel universe, but here he was given some color. He was actually a very interesting character and the suspense plot was a nice change. I did really enjoy the action, but I thought that the spy/thriller plot was very well mixed with it. Lots of enjoyable characters, great

I have very few complaints. It still didn't reach Avengers heights, which is still the tops for me and the only Marvel film I've given a 10/10, but it is easily at the top of the list of Marvel films.

Great sequel; 8/10

Solid movie. Tons of action, quality acting across the board and a good enough story. The Winter Solider story was about as background as it got, so it was kind of odd expecting it to be front and center only to really be a B-story in the plot. However, I enjoyed it along with the main story. Would definitely see it again in theaters.

The Green Lantern of Marvel Movies

Well that was predictable. Another weak villain surrounded by badass sub villains. Twists that any standard movie fan over the age of 5 could see coming a mile away. Evans was great as Steve Rodgers/Capt, but his character this time around was way too boring. Gone was the small underdog that took on all comers from the first movie and instead we get a guy who just uses his body as a weapon as he just bull rushes everyone.

The action was great, wouldn't expect anything less from Marvel/Disney

The story... Couldn't get behind it. Liked the reintroduction of the past, but could have done it with a stronger foe at the helm.

All in all 6/10. It's on the same scale as Thor: The Dark World, had it's great moments, but overrated none the less.

@John Matrix- First off, thanks for bringing up good counter points to my statement instead of just bashing me. Secondly, I didn't see Robert Redford (btw I'm calling him that because his character didn't stand out at all from the actor, it's like I don't see Will Smith playing a character anymore, it's just will smith being will smith) as a strong villain due to the lack of action he did throughout the movie.

Granted, no lead capt. america villain has to necessarily go toe to toe with him in a fight, but Redford didn't do anything different from any previous Bond/Marvel villain that was the same as him before. Take William Stryker from X2 for example. He was nearly the same thing. Leading villain, had a master plan, surrounded himself with soldiers and badass generals, but when it came down to him in the end, he was worthless. Same with Redford, there is very little to no drama in the 3rd act when it's him against SHIELD members because He can't defend himself on his own. Sure he pulls out a little trick or two, but there no threat to the heroes whatsoever.

My main problem was with the character development of Capt and the story. I'm sorry, Captain America was in no way interesting in this film. Throughout his journey it basically came down to this.

Captain America goes someplace

Shit happens

Captain America survives/defeats the shit

"Oh we have to do this now"

The acton really drove this movie, which is fine, but there was nothing that made me want to root for Capt in this one. Like I said above, gone was the skinny underdog and instead we get this guy who is virtually unstoppable (nitpickin here- he falls out of a building, landing on the concrete with only his shield to cover him and he's fine, but a few bullet wounds slows him down....). At first he doesn't seem sure what to do with himself, and to be honest, i felt at times he was only trying to stop hydra was because he didn't know what he would do with himself otherwise. The character didn't grow until Bucky came into play, and by that point the major drama seems to be building up for the third film.

Like I said, they did some stuff good in this movie, it pushed the story forward, but also took some steps back. Iron Man rebounded after a crummy sequel, I expect cap to do the same. Who knows maybe they'll bring back Red skull (played by Ben Kingsley) in the third.

That's my opinion, if ya like it, cool, if ya don't. Whatever it's a movie.

Captain America: Winter Soldier is easily the greatest Marvel comic book film to date. The story was great, had some terrific twists, the action was beyond incredible, and all of the characters were very well written and fleshed out.

The film did a great job of really showcasing how out of touch and time Steve Rogers is in today's world and how depressing it is that everyone he basically knew when he was alive and before he was frozen is gone. But the film also pokes fun at the idea (ie the

But the film also pokes fun at the idea (ie the list of items he writes down to catch up on), which was nice touch. The villain in this story was a nice touch and the reason why Shield is compromised was very well executed in my opinion. It ties the First Avenger and this film together quite nicely.

I thought the chemistry in this film is the best it's even been in a comic book film. Evans and Johansson play off each other so well and effortlessly that you think there characters have been friends for the longest time. And Anthony Mackie made for the perfect Sam Wilson/Falcon. He stole every scene he was in and is a character I hope we really see more of going forward in the Marvel Universe. It was nice to see Jackson and Smulders back as Fury and Hill and to also see Redford, Grillo, and Vancamp having fun with their new fun respected characters. Everyone absolutely owned in this film with their characters and storylines. But Sebastian I think is the biggest surprise in the film. He barely has any dialogue, but he is very intimidating (especially the first scene that we see him introduced) and his fight scenes with Cap were awesome.

This film met my expectations and more and it has become one of my favorite superhero films of all time (I don't care about the thumb downs I get from the last comment) and I think it is the "Dark Knight" of the Marvel Universe; it's that great. Honestly, after watching this film you wonder why all of Marvel's films can't be just as epic and large in scope as this film.

The two bonus scenes were good as well (both being important towards the storyline going forward, unlike The Dark World's second bonus scene) and there is a big, quick mention of a future Avengers name in this film that just got me more amped to finally see that character come to the big screen. And the Stan Lee cameo was awesome as always. And there is a also a quick scene with a certain Community actor towards the beginning of the end of the film (sorry, not Chevy Chase). The last scene of the film is a huge cliffhanger and really leaves you anticipating Cap's next film. I'm just really glad the Russo brothers will be back to helm the next Captain America film since they absolutely directed the hell out of this film.

All in all it was a great comic book film and great film in general and really set the bar for other future comic book films (I hope Guardians of the Galaxy is just as great). The film proves why Captain America is the best Avenger and why he is the badass hero we all know him to be throughout the comics and previous films and why he is my favorite Avenger and why he always will be.

PsychoMaestro

I think it was a little bit overhyped but it was solid. Great action scenes. Great dialogue.

Loved it, gave it a 9 out of 10. Tonally, it works a lot better than the first film, and I think there was just emphasis placed on Steve as a "man out of time" without it becoming unnecessarily mopey. I really liked how all the new characters, including the Falcon, Brock Rumlow, Batroc the Leaper, Sharon Carter and of course the Winter Soldier, were handled. It's to the credit of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely that the script didn't feel cluttered with all these new characters. Joe and

Joe and Anthony Russo's direction was assured and impressive; this was entertaining from start to finish and the exposition was handled really cleverly (love the idea of the Smithsonian exhibit in tribute to Cap, though perhaps that should have been in the Museum of American History instead of the Air and Space museum.)
