What did you think of...Doctor Strange?

11.04.2016

At this point the expectations for the next Marvel Studios film are generally in the good-to-great realm and director Scott Derickson's take on the long-awaited MCU introduction of DOCTOR STRANGE looks to follow that pattern. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Benedict Wong as...Wong, Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius, and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, the newest MCU venture takes us into the magical realm, further expanding the ever-growing comics-to-film universe. So far, the trailers and promos have left just about everyone with a curious excitement for the flick, many hoping it will do what GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY did in terms of showing another side of the MCU.

The reviews thus far have been expectedly solid, with RT's aggregated score sitting at 90% (if that kind of stuff matters to you) and our MFC score hovering at 8.0/10. Our own Eric Walkuski didn't quite love (or hate) the film, saying in his review it "is indeed a different feeling movie than most of the recent Marvel output, while still more or less following the familiar beats of an origin story. It's also one of Marvel's clunkiest movies to date." In my own review, I felt the film was enjoyable enough, but not exactly the slam dunk many are claiming it to be.

Click the image below to see all the trailers, spots, featurettes, clips and more for DOCTOR STRANGE!

And with that, now it's your turn! We want to hear what YOU thought of the film! You can POST YOUR OWN REVIEW of the film in the below strikebacks or on your own Movie Fan Central profile, if you so desire. Naturally, we'd prefer you to comment only if you've seen the film as that's the point here, but do what feels good. Just don't get mad if you get trounced for trolling. Healthy debate, genuine thoughts, and respectful interactions is all we ask. So, let's hear it: Was it a another home run for Marvel or are people falling over themselves for just more of the same? Let us know your thoughts!

Nothing Amazing for me

a 6.5 is fine. The movie is visually refreshing but the story is the same humoristic marvel product.

I know I'm the minority but I wouldn't agree that it's an 8 or 9 out of 10, nor would I say it's in Marvel's top 5. I'm a huge MCU geek but I'd put it at # 10 out of 14. I liked it a lot, it had spectacular visuals, Tilda Swinton was excellent, and Cumberbatch fit the role, but it was also rushed and the villain problem was stronger here than in every other MCU film aside from "The Dark World." That's just my opinion. I think the reviews have been a bit generous with this one. Just a bit

I agree about the heart. I could truly sense a change in Dr Strange. That was crucial.

Yeah, definitely - from a non-believer to a believer. Even though his process of being the Sorcerer Supreme is quite fast, I think it helped, in a way, to get the movie going at a faster pace which is nice. It didn't feel stalled whatsoever.

It wasn't more of the same, and that made me very happy. I'm so glad Marvel has taken the leap, and brought Magic to their lineup. Winter Soldier is still my favorite, but Doctor Strange is now my 2nd. It's not perfect, but it was visually stunning, very well acted, and put down a solid foundation, for more magical marvel films to follow. 8/10

Brilliant!

Probably my 3rd favorite Marvel movie. I campaigned for Cumberbatch all along and he didn't disappoint. He was very good in the role and I enjoyed his casual approach to many of the scenes. It felt like a fun movie and the threat felt like it was FAR above his (or anyone's) ability to overcome, so it was appropriately suspenseful. I'd say that there was a little drama missing (not nearly as fleshed out as Winter Soldier), but I thought it more than made up for it by being the most

They finally didn't portray a movie about heroes being separate from the people they were trying to save.

Good but...

Nothing special. A good 7/10 for me.
Yes, the SFX were great, the cast was good, the story wasn't bad either (I've always loved a good super-hero 'origins story')...
But it suffered from the usual Marvel problems:
The score is AT BEST forgettable (one of the worst from Giacchino, IMO) !
The villain is just above the usual ones of the MCU, but nowhere near a Loki or even a Red Skull...

If they're afraid of actually USE 3D effects, then STOP converting the movies. When I see a film in 3D, I want depth, I wan immersion, I want to think I can touch what's coming out of the screen... You know... I WANT FUCKING 3D EFFECTS ! It's a tool and a great one when used properly (in animation, Avatar, Tron Legacy, Life Of Pie...). It's kind of the same problem with colors in some films, nowadays : the movies are, obviously in color, but they are SO toned down that you could sometimes wonder.
Anyway... Back to Dr.S !
Good and enjoyable, but nothing great or REALLY worth remembering aside from some nice SFX moments.

Doesn't feel like anything else out there

The story isn't exactly original but this is a case where the spectacle more than makes up for it.

I wasn't too impressed with it. Another origin movie we have to go trough, before the real fun can begin. Did like Cumberbatch as Strange and Swinton as The Acient One. The music made me think of Star Trek, so when I saw it was composed by the same guy as Star Trek I thought "that figures". The new Marvel Studios logo was way too long and unnecessary.

SOMETHING SPECIAL!

Easily in Marvels top 5 best.

Epic ride here, little to no slow moments... movie had great pace... and as everyone else has mentioned... spectacular mind blowing visuals. Did not expect that ending... I thought the big D (had to) would have been saved for future sequels... the fact that they went all out in the first movie makes this a special accomplishment Deserves all the hype and then some. I look forward to seeing it again soon!

Just got back from an IMAX 3D showing...awesome! Visuals were amazing, surprisingly humourous, loved the score. As for the performances, Cumberbatch and Swinton were great, as was Wong. Mikkelson did what he could with kind of a thankless character, but he helped set the story. My only gripe was Mordo; while Ejiofor is a great actor and did well with what he had, his "turn" just wasn't convincing...seemed a bit forced, especially as they changed his story a bit from the comics.

6 or 7/10

Someone else said it felt like a phase one movie and i agree. Stark Tower was still standing so probably before Avengers 1. it was a good introduction. Mads Mikkelson was wasted as usual with Marvel Villians, but he gave a good performance for what he had. I am starting to believe the Marvel bias conspiracy cause I def enjoyed BvS more than this and this had far more plot holes. Also Mordo turning evil like he's supposed to felt forced...as in "we gotta send him down this path

B) the movie STARTS in 2016 which is evident by two things.
1. One of his awards in his cabinet clearly states 2016
2. The mention of Rhodey as a possible surgery candidate.

It STARTS before Civil War (and probably just after Avengers), but his journey takes well over a year (possibly several years). We don't know exactly when it ends, but it's probably not too far from Civil War (which is proven out by the stinger).

It's fine. Pretty formulaic origin story and not a bad way to spend two hours. When The Ancient One pushed him through the alternate dimensions was awesome though. Wish I had been stoned just for that scene. The ending with Dormammu was weird, plus if he had the thingy to reverse time, why doesn't he save the Ancient One? Anyway, we'll be here all day if we start talking plot holes.

It was funnier than I thought it would be. Coming out I had no idea Cumberbatch could do comedy let alone the occasional slapstick. McAdams in her brief moments post-Strange training very nearly stole the show for me (nice change of pace from the usual lady foil for Marvel), Ejiofor and Mikkelsen did pretty well for their roles (but you know there will be a sequel based on this setup and ending) and Wong as Strange's straight man was pretty cool. My big regret was not seeing this in 3D, Strange's initial trip is worth the price of admission alone.

Solid entertainment

Like many already said, the visuals and good actors saved a generic origin story.
Wasn't a fan of the slapstick humor with the cloak. Less would have been more here.

a different kind of Marvel movie...

Alright, so I love the MCU. This definitely was a breathe of fresh air. I didn't know what to think when I heard Cumberbatch was going to be Dr. Strange, but it worked. The first 20 minutes felt a bit rushed and sloppy, but once the movie gets going, it does not stop. The parallel dimensions and how they fought / interacted in them was really well done and crazy. The effects were nutty. The acting was great. The comedy was there, even the evolution of Mordo was well done. Kaecilius, I liked,

It is by no means the best Marvel movie to date, but it is a great addition to the MCU. My only real gripe was the beginning because it felt like they failed at delivering a well-paced intro to who Dr. Steven Strange was. Instead they rushed through it at jarring speeds. Another 15 - 20 minutes of character development in the beginning of the movie would have made this a better movie as a whole. But, still, I give it a solid 7/10.

8/10 It felt like it belonged in Phase 1, but it was kind of refrehsing

It is odd to get a movie about a Sorcerer set in the Marvel universe but have it feel confined and tightly packaged. It had crazy visuals but you can't just say go see it for the CGI. Cumberbatch was a perfect fit for the role, much like RDJ is a perfect fit for Iron Man and Hugh Jackman is perfect for Wolverine. The movie is very similar in tone to Ant Man, in that it feels like a modern origin story with a few good comedic relief characters and a great finale. It really beats the whole man vs 100 robots/similar looking creatures that we usually get in Marvel endings.

It was a really great introduction to the character, which is all the movie needed to be. I have a feeling Strange is taking over Tony Starks role soon and he has the facial hair to do it.

saved from being a generic superhero film by the amazing visuals and a few notable performances. Id say Cumberbatch was good, except he's playing a toned down Tony Stark. Ejiofor was the stand out in the cast. Everyone else was pretty paint by numbers as far as performances good. Rachel McAdams character is probably the weakest female lead Marvel has ever had, which is a shame for a number of reasons, notably how talented McAdams is and deserves better. Saw it yesterday and loved it. I liked it as an original story, it was fun, thought all the cast were great, and it visually stunning.

Yes, I would say I found Cumberbatch's American accent jarring at first, but I got over that as the film progressed.

I thought the effects were generally brilliant throughout, with only really the dark dimension coming off a little cartoonish.

All in all another successful MCU film for me, and I can't wait to see how Strange interacts with the likes

Yeah, its always odd to hear that fake American accent but it wasn't distracting enough to ruin any of the comedic or serious moments. Then again, if you've ever heard Cumberbatch speak in his native accent then you would know he also has a bit of a speech impairment that he kind of has to act through to get rid of on even just talk shows.

That's just how British actors do American accents. You didn't mention Hugh Dancy as Will Graham on Hannibal (who also used a gravelly voice like Hugh Laurie as House) or Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock (also British, also used the same accent). It's fine. Americans can do bad British accents that all sound the same as well.

Awesome movie. Just like Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ant Man, I love how different, and offbeat Doctor Strange was compared to the rest of the MCU films at this point. With not really knowing too much about Doctor Strange, it was fun to see this as an origins film and to see his backstory as arrogant surgeon to sorcerer supreme. And the film had some of the best visual sequences and action scenes (especially the ending fight) that Marvel has had so far in any of their films. It'll be really

It'll be really interesting to see how Strange's powers progress stronger going forward for Infinity Wars.

Loved the film, story, visuals, and cast. Cumberbatch, Tilda, and McAdams were all excellent in their roles as Stephen (even though his voice rememinded me of Hugh Laurie's from House MD), the Acient One, and Christine. Everyone had great chemistry with one another and really showed with how much the film was and turned out to be. Definitely one of Marvel's better films based on the pure creativeness behind it alone.

90 % on RT ...???

Just came back from the theater, and I'm kinda felt let down. The best description I can offer is ... corny...??? There was a decent size crowd and the room remained silent during the whole thing. Not going to claim that Suicide Squad was a good movie but the audience I went with the first night was way more engaged than tonight's. Something about the film felt like it missed the mark.

C'mon, you know there's a huge bias towards Marvel movies. That rating should be no surprise.

90% does not mean the movie is rated 9 out of 10. It means that for every 10 critics, 9 of them liked the movie. They don't have to love the movie or consider it a masterpiece--they can even rate it a 6 out of 10--they just have to think it's good enough to recommend. So, it doesn't mean the movie is great or held in high esteem. It just means a lot of people enjoyed it enough to recommend, and that could be for the visuals alone.

It was a bore. And the sfx, to me, weren't that great. They looked too computer generated. Best way I could put it. Although there were times they looked great, but that was only 2 times.

Wanted to Love It, Liked It Very Much

What a stunning visual journey. Truly trippy, awe-inspiring sequences. It's unfortunate that they felt they needed to cram so much story into this, though. The resulting lack of fluid character motivations and the more-than-occasional plot contrivances are really sticking with me, post-viewing. Still, my thoughts remain 'green' because those multiverse sequences are unlike anything I've seen on the big screen. Pretty neat flick, and a stellar adaptation of Ditko's work. Imax 3D highly

Great Time!

It's not at Guardians, Winter Soldier, or Civil War levels, but I definitely think it's better than a 6/10. The plot was a little predictable (this is an origin movie after all), but I thought that visuals were insane!

A visual treat.

Saw it in3D IMAX on Saturday (gotta love that early UK release), possibly Marvel most visually pleasing movies yet. Solid performances, Benedict Wong is amazing. That third act fight sequence whilst everything is in reverse was incredible.
