What did you think of...Ghostbusters?

07.15.2016

Oh, shit...here we go. It's no mystery that Paul Feig's take on a rebooted GHOSTBUSTERS has been met with some serious backlash, which seemed to resonate exclusively over the choice to make it an all-female cast, including Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. Personally speaking, I thought it was an odd choice that felt a bit gimmicky at first, but I've settled into the idea at this point and am looking forward to catching the film to decide for myself what to make of it. Some folks are notably upset about the revamp, which I think stems largely from the fact that this isn't GHOSTBUSTERS 3 with the original cast, especially after years of teasing about the project potentially happening. Unfortunately, that ship has long since sailed and it's time to usher in a new generation of Ghostbusters, be it female, male or...animated. If anything, I'm happy to see them giving the franchise a go and opening the doors for any number of films set within the universe. But, first we have to see how this puppy performs.

So far, reviews have been resoundingly positive with the film currently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, sitting at 74 percent, a far cry from what many had predicted to be an outright disaster. Our own Chris Bumbray seemed to enjoy it more than most, giving it 8/10 and saying that it "winds up being one of the better all-around big summer blockbusters, and a refreshing, fun movie..." Eric Walkuski wasn't quite as fond of the film, giving it a 5/10, saying "It’s not quite bad, but it never rises above being mediocre ", while over at AITH, The Arrow gave the film a 6/10, saying, "Your enjoyment of this film will rely heavily on your sense of humor and if it gels with the one the film pimps (i.e. juvenile)" So, there you have it. Three different opinions on the film from us. It seems pretty consistent with most comedies in that regard as they rely so much on one's sense of humor, which we all know can vary wildly. Shit, one of my favorite comedies ever is SAVING SILVERMAN and I don't give a f*ck if anyone disagrees.

Now, we want to hear what YOU thought of the film! You can POST YOUR OWN REVIEW of the film in the below strikebacks or on your own Movie Fan Central profile. Was it the epic childhood-stealing flop you predicted or was it a surprisingly enjoyable experience? Also, to note, I realize that many of you are still hate-raging on this no matter what and that's your prerogative, but let's try and stay on topic here and keep the comments about your ACTUAL reactions to the film, good, bad, or ugly, but ONLY if you've seen it. This isn't the place for tangents about how much you loathe its existence even though you haven't seen it. We've covered that enough already. We get it.

I went to see it again, in part to help hammer down my feelings on the movie. You know, I like it. Respect to those who didn't because I have my issues with it, and no, these aren't the GB we grew up with. But I think I laughed more the second time and I love the effects and gadgets. It put a smile on my face. Also, the line "Never compare me to the Mayor from Jaws! NEVER!" is maybe my favorite line of the year.

This Was A perfect Summer Movie

I was neutral on the whole female reboot of Ghostbusters. I went into the theater with an open mind and just looking to have a fun for a couple of hours. Well, this new take the Ghostbusters turned out to be a fresh, funny and charming film. With some real laugh out load moments, more than I expected.

The cameos, especially Andy Garcia's, were well done and added to the movie. When Garcia's NY Mayor was insulted at being compared to the Jaws Amity Mayor, that was unexpected and played well.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this movie, and look forward to having to own at home. Give it a shot.
In the end the theater was filled, and people clapped, yes clapped, at the end. I would expect on this hitting the top spot this weekend in the box office and a sequel would definitely be welcome.
Enjoy!

Better than Deadpool

I laughed more at Ghostbusters than I did with Deadpool. I even thought that Holtzman "outpooled" Deadpool. The Bill Murray bit didn't work for me, and the new theme is bad, but other than that, this was way better than I expected. Hemsworth can be funny, who knew...

Just got back from the drive-in, it was the second feature after Tarzan which was surprisingly about 75% full for the "sunset" feature. Half the cars for Tarzan left after the first 10 minutes of GB. The effects were ok, but looked too cartoonish. Other than Ernie Hudson, the cameos were lame.

Refusal to Understand Objection

I just don't understand why some people refuse to understand the objection most people had with this movie right from the start. The objection is not that it's a female Ghostbusters. It's a director that is not the right fit for a movie like this. He makes great comedy movies, but his sensibilities are not right for this movie. Also, I've always thought of Melissa McCarthy as female Chris Farley. As a fan of her sitcom her whole stick is 'look how funny it is because I'm big and fat!'. The

Also, I've always thought of Melissa McCarthy as female Chris Farley. As a fan of her sitcom her whole stick is 'look how funny it is because I'm big and fat!'. The fussing started with the announcement of her casting. The rest of the cast is great. It's Mellissa and Paul people have a problem with not a 'all female cast'. I realize that there are some sexist bigots out there that only care about the sex of the cast.

Melissa wasn't like that in this movie (at all) and she wasn't like that in Spy. I agree she was like that in Bridesmaids (but I adore that movie and her in it), but I can't speak to the other stuff she's done as I haven't seen it.

But hey if you guys don't want to see it then don't see it. Lots of movies I pass up but I don't feel the need to try to talk everybody else into my opinions and I don't wish the movies to fail. I originally wasn't going to see this one because I

I originally wasn't going to see this one because I typically don't enjoy remakes/reboots made decades after an original. I changed my mind and I'm glad I gave it a shot.

Just so you understand one thing though: when people call this a "sheboot," they're proving right there what their objections are. Same as when they refer to the female cast members as vaginas. I know that's probably only a small percentage but they have a loud voice.

It was fun!

I just got out of a 1:15 showing and my theater was packed. Lots of laughter from the start to the finish. If you can go into this one without pre conceived notions and with an open mind, you can have a fun time at the theater. My only complaint was Kate McKinnon. She was trying for wacky and cool but she came off as weird and annoying. I never did warm to her but she didn't affect my enjoyment of the film. Everybody else was great and I've seen a lot worse comedies over the last few years

Not Good

Another big disappointment this summer. Unfunny, unoriginal, and just plain contrived. At no point while watching this could I believe these 4 women are scientists/paranormal investigators that are interesting. Don't give me any crap about being a misogynist or having preconceived notions of such before watching the film. These 4 women are very talented and are capable of much better material. The script and presentation here sucked. This film is just another hollow product of

Harold Ramis is gone, they should have left this franchise alone the way it was. This film was pointless and unnecessary. Stick with the original 2 films, The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, and the video game.

Just saw it. It was pretty good, nothing to write home about though. A good summer popcorn flick like many others that come out during this season. I laughed quite a bit, but I felt the beginning was slow. I had no problem with the villain. I can't see how people didn't understand the motives of the villain. Its real simple, he wanted to see the world burn, like a lot of other villains. I give the movie a 7/10

Saw it last night with my fiancÚ. She absolutely loved it. It was more bittersweet for me. I always wanted to see a third movie with the originals. When Ramis died I knew that was it. So it's cool to see something new done with the franchise, but it just made me think of what might've been if they had gotten it together years ago. Id give the new one a 6/10. A few funny lines, and the ghost effects were well done, but something felt off to me about it.

Solid film. Not great by any means. Haters and the "prophetic" fanboys who trashed it before it even came out are still gonna hate, but they're wrong. I saw the original at the movies when it opened in 84, so that movie holds nostalgic value, but it shot itself in the foot when the sequel came out, which proved that even with the same cast involved, to top the original is impossible. This one is leagues better than Ghostbusters 2 and it dosen't try to top the original, which is all you can ask

So I'd suggest to see it before you form an opinion, which (unless you're Nostradamus) is what I think you need to do to have an opinion...

A Eulogy...

Bill Murray has gotten his revenge. That's why he suggested this a few years back. He planted the seed when he suggested they do funny women. Why? Because Bill was tired of us, every goddamn day, asking him if he was gonna do it. Every restaurant check dropped, every reporter after the cameras were off, every chauffeur asked Bill on a likely DAILY basis if he was going to work on a Ghostbusters 3. Oh please, Bill, please do another movie it's my brothers favorite or my all time favorite comedy

Every restaurant check dropped, every reporter after the cameras were off, every chauffeur asked Bill on a likely DAILY basis if he was going to work on a Ghostbusters 3. Oh please, Bill, please do another movie it's my brothers favorite or my all time favorite comedy or the reason I got into acting or my dead mothers favorite actor OR whatever. So he suggested they shoot it in the head, live on TV. Dead, no question about it. And if he legally or otherwise HAS to appear in the new garbage, they have to kill him off, you know...for comedy, Paul. It'll be a hoot. Two legends like us...collaborating, Paul?!.
And Bill still wins because NOW for the rest of his life people will be telling him how much better his was than the new crap. He exchanged your want for your complements. It's the most brilliant, diabolical plot in entertainment history, as George Lucas didn't have to play the long game like that and take so long to originally kill what he was tired of.
And all the while those of us complementing him are forgetting that he created it in the first place.
And Bill being Bill...he did it. He knew it would fail. He killed it. He did it because he was done with it. He was done with us. Bill Murray murdered Ghostbusters as a semi-retirement gift to himself, and he's too big and too cool to let us know he's got THAT kind of pull.
Bill Murray is more powerful than the president.
RIP Ghostbusters 1984-2016

I wanted to like it. I really did. I honestly don't care who wields the packs; I just wanted a good Ghostbusters flick. It fails miserably. My expectation was that I would have a few laughs and see some cool-looking ghosts. It delivers on the ghosts, but not nearly enough to save the lowbrow schlock that it tries to pass off as comedy.

That being said, I agree with your comment. Bill Murray's cameos felt like a big middle finger. I used to admire Murray, but it's difficult to admire a guy

I seen it

I laughed a lot. Like full belly laughs. My wife doesn't even like these types of movies, and she loved it. I had to conpartmentalize my deep affection for the originals, and allow myself to experience this movie as of the originals hadn't existed. And doing that allowed me to love it, too.

It was never going to be perfect. It's not meant to be cinematic. It was, however, incredibly entertaining.

My biggest complaints were that I felt no connection to the villain, who as many critics pointed out felt like an afterthought, and I think there was a better choice out there than Kristen wiig (who was the only cast member I did not enjoy in this). I like to think hers was the part Emma stone turned down and that if she'd been in this it may have been even better.

I also feel the some complaints about the lack of chemistry are somewhat valid, but only because of the failings of the editors and feigs direction choices. Too often characters were isolated on camera, which made the viewer sense an isolation from her environment and other characters. When the ladies appeared in scene together it always gelled well. Maybe the sequel could tackle that a bit.

DAMMIT

I will admit I was in the camp who wanted it to suck because I hate the idea of remakes of great classics.

However I reluctantly give it a 6/10. It was not that funny. I may have laughed 3 times at most and smiled a few more. But it was an engaging film. The opening of the movie was actually kinda great. And thankfully they used the original theme a few times to make the new remix bearable. Dan and Ernie's cameos fared best. Bill Murray played a surprisingly serious role. Anyway...wanted to

Like it wasn't great, but it was solid enough to enjoy. Some jokes fell flat and the cameos were pretty awkward. That said, it was fun. Actually fun. The visuals were well done and creative and there were some pretty solid action bits. I'd see it again and I'm very curious to see what a sequel that's unchained from any cameos/references/fan service gags would be like.

not bad

started off kinda slow but got better and funnier when chris hemsworth entered the movie. The sequel from 89 is still my favorite (what am i the only one) but this was still somewhat entertaining and fun to watch. Coulda been worse but coulda been better, so a decent 7/10.

Im so surprised so many of you went out to see this film after tearing it down for months...

I have no intention on supporting this on any level, i dont need to see it to decide. The more people that go out to see it, the more the studios and media can spin this into a "successful" film.

It wasn't perfect. When the film was trying to be a comedy - which was most of the time - it was funny but the main plot felt like an afterthought. And there was too many cameos, a problem that will probably be fixed if there's a sequel.

Of course it's a shitstorm

It was absolutely the worst movie of the summer, even of the year. Nothing about the movie worked. It came off as forcing this feminist agenda when it would have been better for it to be a feminist message. The agenda backfires though when the only funny characters are male and the females are super cartoonish and unfunny.

It came off as forcing this feminist agenda when it would have been better for it to be a feminist message. The agenda backfires though when the only funny characters are male and the females are super cartoonish and unfunny.

Yes, but look at how the media moves the goal posts: [link] [link]48b4d3693323

3.4 Million is "solid" and a "rollicking start."

$40 Million for the opening weekend for ID4 Part 2, was considered an indication of a flop. But for the she-boot of Ghostbusters, Variety reports the Studio expecting it to bring in $38 to $40 million. So its reasonable to expect that media outlets will claim GB 2016 to be a box office success without regard to the actual numbers.

That 75% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes will drop very quickly. Right now it is 73%. If you're going to go with a rating you should look at the Metacritic score which is around 60%. A RT score should never be used until after the first weekend.

I have it a 3/10 because Hemsworth saved every scene he was in. Nobody else was funny and that's horrible for a movie that forced the feminist card on everyone.

At no time did I root for these people like in the original. The city never fell in love with the team like in the original, they saved the city and no one was there cheering them on. Yes they added in the "we love the Ghostbusters" lights on the buildings at the end but it was like an afterthought. The Kevin character was a stupid attempt to say hey look it's the classic blonde bimbo but we made it a man! I could go on and on but there is no point. Garbage FUCK you Sony!!!!!

Fun all the way

Saw it last night, it had enough originality not to feel like a total remake, the special effects were top notch, it had its spooky fun moments and the girls had great chemistry and did a bang up job doing their own take with the concept. Loved it all the way. Set back? Can't think of any right now.

This has got to be the craziest review I've read. If you like it, cool. But original???? Special effects top notch??? You have got to be kidding me.

Gotta say though, I wouldn't trust your judgement for movies what so ever, you gave God's of Egypt a 4 out of 5.

Felt like a kid again!!

Saw it last night. My audience cheered and applauded in all the right places. Perfect summer movie. It kept the spirit of the original with Paul feig's spin. The ladies were real characters I cared about. Chris Hemsworth was hysterical and the cameos by the originals were perfect. I saw the original in theaters when I was a kid and have loved it ever since. I left the new one with the same feeling and my childhood not ruined!!!! Go see it!!!

It stunk. I actually saw it. Points to Kristen Wiig. And Chris Hemsworth who was a good sport, despite playing one of the most annoyingly dumb characters of all time. Kate McKinnon was just, I don't know, you know those people that act weird for the sake of weird to come across as LOOK AT ME I'M SO WACKY?

No, reviews have not been resoundingly positive

Rather, there's a fairly even 50/50 split.

Rotten Tomato's 76% is actually a 50% after it's corrected for SJW activism by clicking on Top Critics, It's in the neighborhood of what imdb.com shows, it's in the neighborhood of what metacritic shows, it's reflective of the even number of good and positive reviews being published just about everywhere, and it's congruent with comment ratings here at Joblo which just about every time land at a 50% after everyone is done heaving and

And a 5/10 and a 6/10 are a 50 and 60%. An F and a D-. That's not exactly resoundingly positive.

Evidence that activism has failed to change perception in the film comes to us in the form of a childish, "the original wasn't all that great anyway" rant published by Time Magazine. [link] This is the equivalent of Johnny taking a ball over to Mary's house to play with. After playing with the ball, Johnny has to go home and needs to take his ball with him. Mary wants him to leave the ball there so she can play with it. Johnny refuses and takes the ball home with him. In response, Mary says, "Fine! Go take your big stupid ball home with you anyway. I didn't want to play with your stupid ball anyway!" Yeah. It's really that childish and transparent.

Just because you have this creative theory about "SJW activism" being "filtered through Top Critics"... doesn't make it true. But you sure seem insistent about it...

Oh, and have you seen the movie? This is a page where you post your thoughts on the movie when you have seen it. It states that explicitly above. And maybe half the comments here are from people who haven't and just expound and on and on about their conspiracy theories. Sorry, but see the damn film if you're gonna post here.

It's not about a creative theory. It's about the filtered numbers falling in line with what we see just about everywhere else, including the 50/50 splits that happen in the ratings in Joblo threads on the matter.

No, I haven't seen the movie. But I don't need to see the movie to comment on the basic premise, just as I don't need to actually place my hand into fire to know that it will burn me. Furthermore, this isn't 1978. People are now well practiced in reviewing pre-production

Furthermore, this isn't 1978. People are now well practiced in reviewing pre-production material and comparing them with the final product on websites such as this to understand what they're in store for. Plus, the entire point of a trailer is to give people the opportunity to judge as to whether or not they want to see the film in the first place. So I'm not sure why it is that you keep making that stupid argument. Some folks just want/need to be burned I suppose. Are you still holding out hope for Fant4stic?

But I'm not even commenting on the film here. I'm commenting on the nature of the reviews of the film.

Yes, my point has been made, again, and again, and again. It's in response to other stupid and incorrect points that are being made, again, and again, and again.

Moat Man, yes they should give it a rest too. It goes both ways. Crazy is crazy be it attacking someone view liking or disliking the film. We each have our own opinions but since you have not seen it, give your "SWJ positive reviews" spin a rest just as people should stop accusing those that disliked it for being sexist etc.
Enough with the crazy on all sides.

@GodMagnus There is no crazy on my side. I'm dealing with numbers and facts, not spasms of emotional anger.

Numbers such as this, the 45% Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes. [link]

Another number congruent with the other numbers, including the SJW-less Top Critic rating at RT.

You may not like that, but that's the way it is anyway.

@Moatman, actually it's not. There's no opinion as to whether or not fire is hot. It's hot. It's always gonna be hot, it's never gonna change. What in the world?

Why are people coming on here and posting on this article WHO HAVE NEVER SEEN THE MOVIE? The title ask 'What did you think of it?" There's an expectation you know, you actually have SEEN the movie.

I haven't seen it, doesn't look interesting to me, but get over your nerd rage, leave the post to people who have actually seen the movie so people can read opinions of the experience rather than clutter up the comments with 'not going to see it'.

I really don't get people sometime.

You didn't discredit my point in any way. The article is asking for opinions of people who have SEEN the movie, not just the trailers. There's been articles for every GB trailer for people to comment on the trailers and their view of what they saw and think. Personally, the trailers didn't appeal to me.

My point, AGAIN, is I don't see the point of commenting about what you think of a movie you have NOT seen when the article is asking for the opinions of people who HAVE seen the movie.

Well, therein likes the problem, right?

In the interest of time management, I've adopted a procedure whereby I read any given article up until I start finding an error. If there's errors in the article, then there really isn't much point in reading further. Sometimes I offer points of correction, sometimes I don't. Well, therein likes the problem, right?

In the interest of time management, I've adopted a procedure whereby I read any given article up until I start finding an error. If there's errors in the article, then there really isn't much point in reading further. Sometimes I offer points of correction, sometimes I don't. But in this case, I arrived at the first error in the article, and therefore didn't find it necessary to proceed reading it. So I guess I never read that request.

Having said that, I didn't comment on the movie in this thread, only on the error in the article above.

You had a good run, Moat Man. You've left a legacy of your SJW rantings for us all to savor for decades to come. Cheers.

Horrible in a lot of aspects.

This is one of the worst movies of the year. Horrible. Unfunny, bad directed, bad acted, with aged CGI effects and and a hideous script. It's like a bad Scooby Doo episode. And if we talk about equality, why all the men of the movie are stupids? That's not equality, is feminazism. Disgusting.

Bad...

I wasn't going to jump on board with the hatred this film was getting pre-release. It was so unnecessary and heavy handed -- to me, this reboot does nothing to affect the original, so I couldn't understand why people were so upset by its existence.

I almost defiantly WANTED to like it MORE because everyone else hated it so much. A rare hipster moment for me... But having seen it, it was BAD. Like, not the least bit funny -- mildly amusing -- but very weak. This doesn't deserve the

The best way to describe this movie is that it is simply mediocre.

I refuse to watch a reboot of the beloved classic when there was a lot of potential to continue the franchise in the already established universe with the original cast (minus Harold Ramis) reprising their roles in a supporting capacity (think Sylvester Stallone in Creed) with a new group being at the forefront. There was no reason to reboot this whatsoever. This is absolute garbage.

Movie sucked, I saw joblos review and thought I would give it a shot. Me and a buddy went and we were the only 2 in the entire theater! no plot at all they never explain why the bad dude did what he did! and the FX from 84 look way better than the 2016 ones! Kate Mckinnon is the worst after 5 mins I was so done with her stupid character. Garbage!!!

Well..,

....I loved it! It was funny and creepy at times. I thought the opening was very well done. Watching it again in a couple of days.

I liked it

It was entertaining, inoffensive popcorn comedy. Not the Dark Knight. You don't have to pretend you didn't like it, you won't lose nerd points. It's OK to say a reasonably entertaining movie based around a classic theme was fun to watch. The old sexist views you held are OK to drop now.

No one will think less of you if you drop the outraged internet warrior act, it's OK. Shhh. It's OK.

You can drop the cheesey and fallacious claims of sexism.

Lacking interest in a reboot of a beloved classic when there was a lot of potential to continue the franchise in the already established universe with the original cast (minus Harold Ramis) reprising their roles in a supporting capacity (think Sylvester Stallone in Creed) with a new group being at the forefront does not constitute sexism.

As someone who enjoyed the movie, I agree that I still would have preferred Venkman, Stanz and Zeddamore be the mentors rather than cameos. Personally, I think it would have worked better that way, an already established world where Ghosts are coming back after 30 years and the ladies take the reigns...but it's not so, whatever.
It was never about sexism for me. Mix it up, all male, all female, black, white, hispanic, asian, doesn't matter. I would have liked a bit more diversity taking the

Honestly, it felt like an Adam Sander movie. I don't get how someone can bash a movie like Click or Grown Ups, then turn around and praise this film. It was too forgettable to hate, not good enough to like. It was just Meh.

Well, honest opinion from a huge GB fan - I just saw it. You have to roll with some punches here and some stuff really doesn't come off well, but at its best, I had some fun with the movie, I laughed and it reminded me of what I enjoy about GB. The cameos were mixed, and yeah, one still wishes the original players could have returned to their roles in *some* way. If this is the GB movie we have to get though, I'll take it. Oh, and the special effects (and 3D) were very cool and well done. It's

I didn't think anything of it cuz I'm saving my box office dollars for something else. I'm sure I'll make an effort to watch it when it hits HBO or something and I'll give it a fair chance then. But in the mean time "The Real Ghostbusters" are the ONLY ghostbusters as far as I'm concerned.

It was bad. Wretchedly so. The characters were annoying, I never rooted for any of them. The effects were overdone. It simply wasn't FUNNY at all. It was worse than I feared, which I posted about earlier after a preview screening the other day, and NOBODY laughed in the theater except at one joke late in the movie. The flick constantly breaks its own rules and manages to annoy the fuck out of fans and non-fans alike. The positive reviews make no sense to me. I've been wrong before and I man up

Ledger as the Joker? I was wrong on that one. I was right about this and it fucking sucks that this has been done to the franchise.

Spoilers!!!

I like the part where they show up to the WWE Smackdown event. The ghost shows up and enters the ring. Roman Reigns ends up powerbombing Kristen Wigg's character. Patty aka Leslie Jones just isn't having it. She enters into the cage and choke slams him. After Reigns is put out cold, Patty moves his body to the ropes. Melissa McCarthy drops her pants revealing a super tight thong. She then rubs her bare bottom on his face a la Rikishi, all while Kate Mckinnon is licking her proton pack. This

Worthystevens

It was just so bad. The opening scene was good, but the rest... I honestly was horrified during the second and third acts. Too much failed comedy. By the final confrontation, I'd wanted the ghosts to win.
