What did you think of...Godzilla?

May. 16, 2014by: Paul Shirey

Gojira has arrived! We’ve waited through two years worth of Comic Con teases and an onslaught of marketing that mostly hinted at the King of All Monsters’ final debut, showing as little as possible. Until now. GODZILLA is finally in theaters and we can see for ourselves if the lizard-like kaiju can dominate movie screens after his (her?) last attempt failed miserably. With MONSTERS director Gareth Evans at the helm and a beefed up cast, including Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, future Avengers Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen, and “Ruse” Al Ghul himself, Ken Watanabe.

Anticipation grew with each new trailer, TV spot, poster, etc. and early reviews suggested that this GODZILLA may well be the one we’ve been waiting for. JimmyO’s video review came out to a 8/10, while Chris Bumbray’s 6/10 review suggested that while it had its merits, the film can’t quite match the hype. You can get caught up on all the GODZILLA goodness with trailers, TV spots, featurettes, and more by clicking the image below.

Now that you've experienced the monster mash for yourself, we want to hear what YOU thought of GODZILLA's latest cinematic entry. You can POST YOUR OWN REVIEW of the film in the below strikebacks or on your own Movie Fan Central profile. Was it the GODZILLA film you've been waiting for? Did it live up to expectations or are you starting to think Emmerich's version wasn't so bad? Let's hear it! We'll continue to update the Rotten Tomatoes and MFC scores throughout the weekend, so check back to see how GODZILLA fares over the weekend!

Clearly one of the best Godzilla movies out there. 1000 times better than the Matthew Broderick movie.
I'm really not understanding all the hate for the movie. What were they looking for from a Kaiju movie?

What we wanted from a Kaiju fi!n- the fucking monster to actual be in it! For the plot to make the slightest amount of sense, and some action scenes with clear geography.

I like the slow build and reveal for Godzilla. The back story and exposition were fine. I guess I am weird like that, but I loved Ang Lee's Hulk for the same reason, he bothered to try and give a human context behind the amazing disaster coming. All smash and no story would be lame. Even in Jaws there was a slow burn until the reveal. And Jaws is a great film. My feeling is that Gareth Edward's Godzilla will be looked at kindly over time. Youre right. This movie is exactly like jaws. Where as Jaws made people not want to swim in the water at the beach, Godzilla's gonna make people not want to spend their money at the theatres.

Well it appears that Godzilla swept up at the box office this weekend. Of course that will change with X-Men and Maleficent coming up soon.

I liked it a lot. It was what I expected and more. No guy in a rubber suit, when Godzilla appears he is impressive. The bad guys the MUTOs are very cool looking with a unique power. The humans in the film are suitably shocked, awed, and fearful. The destruction was good. There were memorable scenes like the Halo jump.

Biggest steaming pile of shit; Not even Godzilla could crap this much.

Fuck this crap. I am so fucking upset that I wasted $32 for myself and a friend to sit through this wreck of an accident on celluloid. We both hated it and it ruined my entire fucking day.

Not sure what to make of this movie. Definitely not bad definitely not as good as some are making it out to be. People where mad about not seeing Rhino enough in a spider-man movie? What about Godzilla in his own damn movie? The pacing was really bad too. A series of coincidences strung together to tell a story isn't a story. Also I don't get why people like this so much when it's the same story as 1998's Godzilla just on a global scale.

Storyline not bad..CG is perfect, not too heavy, not too lightly made...Bryan Cranston's death was the unhappiest part for me..they just..like he died, nothing great, just pass it...i'm not happy with this part..it was too lightly made for one of most important character in the movie..

I'm not sure bout u guys, but i think Godzilla need some hard thumping steps sound..maybe its just the cinema i went..

Just finished watching Godzilla and I thought it was great. Best kaiju movie I have seen in years. To those complaining there was not enough Godzilla, give your head a shake. Too much of a good thing ruins' its effect. Aside from the spotty acting this is a prime example of what a summer blockbuster should be.

Honestly speaking....

I neither hated it or loved it. The First and Last half hours are incredible but everything in between totally sucks. The final action sequence is awesome but the entire human story is simply incredibly limp. So guess I will to wait for a sequel to see a better Godzilla movie. Bring on King Ghidorah!!!

Why would you want him to fight something that has no hands to fight with and flies (since he can't do anything about an aerial opponent except wait for them to land)?

Talk about sounding boring......

Loved it! (Spoiler)

I don't know how anyone could not like this movie. Ok, Godzilla wasn't fighting the whole movie. Personally, I loved that they went this route. It was perfect and made the last battle that much better. I think people are so use to movies like Transformers that they forgot what real "movie magic" is all about. My one complaint is Bryan Cranston and I blame most of this on marketing. They made it seem that he was one of the main characters in the film but dies not long in. Personally, I think

Personally, I think that wasn't the way to go and it actually pissed me off they did that. They could have had him survive and him stay with Ken Watanabe while Aaron Taylor-Johnson went off and did his thing. It would have made for some great dialogue between the two and nothing is wrong with having more of Bryan Cranston on screen. With that being said, I still give it an 8.5 maybe even 910.

I loved this movie.

However, for the second time in a row this year(the first being Amazing Spiderman 2), I've been misled by a film's marketing campaign. Bryan Cranston was advertised as the lead actor of this film and he was dead in thirty minutes!! He owned every scene he was in but I expected him to survive at least the first two thirds. What they advertised was Walter White vs. Godzilla but what I saw was Kick-Ass vs two other strange monsters and Godzilla was the damn hero at the end!! Still, it was a

Still, it was a brilliant, well-made ass-kicking(no pun intended) two hours of blockbuster cinematic glory. Every level of film-making was brilliantly executed. Is there really any blockbuster of this nature made these days that doesn't owe something to Spielberg? As far as I'm concerned, that is a GOOD thing.

I disagree with almost all the criticisms I'd heard going into the movie. Although there obviously wasn't enough Godzilla for any of us, there was a ton of stuff with the MUTOs, so almost half the movie was seeing these incredible CGI monsters. I dug the acting....especially Cranston (and Watanabe was really good too). Johnson wasn't nearly as "boring" as I kept hearing. The scenes he was in were almost 50% action, so it wasn't like he was sitting there giving exposition.

I think people have gotten carried away with their ADD.....we had a blast and can't wait to go again.

BTW, the time he first used his breath weapon was one of the coolest things I've seen in a movie (strictly from an awe perspective).

Incredible first hour.

They revealed the monsters too quickly. Literally nothing happened in the whole second act while we waited for the monsters to meet up. They just kept cutting between shots that didn't really move the story forward. Any scene by itself was masterfully executed, but it was all edited into a plateau of tedium.

For all the people talkin' about JAWS, Cloverfield, JPark and how much screen time have those "monsters"... this one is called Godzilla, and we all know the guy and we don`t need soo much introduction. Cloverfield was about "something" and the monster was part of the mistery, and Jurassic Park shows the dinos like 3 times more than this movie. And JAWS is way out of this discussion. And the problems here are others, not Godzilla's screen time. There's no interesting humans to focus. Then

How Did Anyone Like This?

If it weren't for "Amazing Spider-Man 2", this boring crapfest would be the worst film of the year (so far). Where the living fuck is Godzilla in his own film? Why is there constant cutting away? That didn't build tension, it undermines the entire purpose of making a kaiju film, especially if it's the king of the monsters. This movie's weird preoccupation with shots of running dogs and ungrateful (possibly mental handicapped children) was bizarre, to say the least. The camera movements and edits were so awkward and odd that it made no sense. Before this movie, I was unaware it was possible to dutch angle a top down view. I was also unaware that some random girl finding fish was soo important that it needed to be foreshadow by an epic pan down signifying jack and shit.

I love daikaiju films, have seen every Godzilla and Gamera movie made, own most of them and a ton of other similar films, this film was too boring to qualify as a real action film, too dumb to be a good character study, and has so many plot holes (how did Ford find his son at the end? He had no clue that his kid was on a bus heading X place. Why was there no reunion scene for those two? What the fuck movie?)

A goddamn travesty from a hack of a director that couldn't be bothered to give too shits about his main character. How did anyone enjoy this shit?

@Cynical, I am not sure how that is a dig, as I imagine that's how you intended it, but I glaldly will. This movie failed as a story about family, as a monster flick, and as a Godzilla film because he's barely in it.

I am not kidding when I asked how anyone enjoyed this- it has so many objective problems I am amazes people are able to overlook them all and find something not boring to like.

I saw this realizing when I walked out the Bathroom that I was watching Malcolm in the middle. He was a drug dealer in that other movie. Know what I'm Saying? Why is Quicksilver married to his Sister? They had a child together. So his sister had to touch his pee pee. But she did her Father who carried a Hammer. And she has sisters who are Twins. And those twins were being fathered by Jesse who was married to Mystique in real life and she was with Magneto who is her FATHER!!!

GODZILLA WAS FANTASTIC / COMPLAINTS WERE UNFOUNDED!

While I do respect the opinion of those who didn't quite like Godzilla, I find that alot of their opinions are unfounded. Such as the 'lack of character development'. Cranston believed that there was more to the disaster and found out that he was right before he died..CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. A soldier who gets leave and is told they never prepare you for coming home then finds out his father is in jail, leaves his wife and kid to help him, father dies compartmentalizes his death to help protect

CD... Ken Watanabes' character .. a scientist tracking the existance of these beings whose father died at Hiroshima.. CD!.. An Admiral who knows he has to protect those of the US but puts his trust in Godzilla at the end.. CD!. Even with the complaints that Cranston should not have died, well yes I love Cranstons work, what the hell else would he have done after finding out that he was right. His arc was over at that point. The fact that Godzilla is only seen in part of the half way point and at the last 30. HAVE YOU PEOPLE EVER SEEN A GODZILLA MOVIE OUTSIDE OF THE MATT BRODERICK ONE!. This movie was perfectly made as a Godzilla movie. Those going in to it thinking Pacific Rim should have known better. 10/10 for sure!

loved it!

Took my oldest son, we couldn't stop nudging elbows and smirking at each other. We ate it up, loved the build up and the personalities of the monsters. The final fight was awesome, can't wait for a sequel. Can't imagine what a King Ghidorah(or something close) would be like in this G-verse.

The Godzilla Scenes Worked

When the movie gave us Godzilla it was fantastic. For the most part whenever something big was tearing shitake up it was awesome. (Except for the missile carrying train scene. That was awful.) But when it came to scenes with Kick Ass or his nurse wife, they were unnecessary. In fact , Kick Ass somehow remaining involved on every step of his trip home was completely stupid. The old Godzilla films really didn't bother with the human element. This film should have followed that approach. So, when creatures tear things up, this film is a blast. When people are discussing humankind's plight, boring and unnecessary.

Enjoyed It!

If I had to give one complaint it would be that I would have liked to see more uninterrupted monster fighting. But, I'm still very happy with the way it turned out! Godzilla himself was incredible! I'm sure we'll see more of the classic monsters in the sequels.

Huge disappointment.

I did not care about generic-soldier-man & his generic-nurse-wife, I cared about Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, & Godzilla. Neither of these three things are the most prominent thing in the movie.

Godzilla-Origin Story

I really enjoyed the movie and my kids did too. Watching the movie kind of reminded me of a superhero movie origin story. You don't see the full reveal of the much anticipated costume/hero doing their thing until later in the movie. Actually Godzilla is a superhero so the movie plays along that theme. Also the first BW Raymond Burr Godzilla movie left you in suspense until the full reveal, remembering the iconic one word line from the rescued fisherman "Godzilla". Actually in this movie Ken

Actually in this movie Ken Watanabe makes the reference "We call him Godzilla" line. That put a smile on my face. Overall I thought the movie was very good. I am glad they kept Godzilla true too the Godzilla of old. When the first reveal of his radioactive breath and the illumination of the spikes down his tail and back was awesome.

Liked it but...

The main thing that drove me nuts were them cutting away from the first couple fights with Godzilla... I came to see a movie about Godzilla and didn't really feel like that is what it was. But again cutting away from the fights... Even when the last fight came up I expected them to cut away from it, thankfully they didn't.

I agree more fighting would have made it a much better movie (particularly if they'd shown him either losing one of the fights or in some way creating a question of if he could win).

That said, I did love that they cut to his son watching a live monster battle on TV. That just cracked me up without resorting to cheesiness.

I liked the cutting away from the fighting scenes. Fighting scenes can become too much, and make it cartoonish and lose the feel fro what is really happening. Look at Man of Steel or Transformers. I liked the cutting away from the fighting scenes. Fighting scenes can become too much, and make it cartoonish and lose the feel fro what is really happening. Look at Man of Steel or Transformers. You can blow millions of more dollars for an expensive CGI scene, and in the end have something as cheesy as a guy in a rubber suit wrestling another guy in a rubber suit and lose the impact of the event.

Liked it

I enjoyed this movie. I had high anticipation before the reviews, then after the reviews was a bit cautious. I came out enjoying it a lot. It was a very slow driven movie, and I understand the hate of the cutting away during the action, but I understood what they were attempting and I enjoyed the teases honestly. I have a feeling Godzilla is this summers Man of Steel, it will be heavily divided among people

Really enjoyed it.

The creatures are really nicely realised. The attention to their instinct/ behaviour/ motivation gave the fight scenes more depth. Gojira is a bad ass. I was left wanting more in a good way. Amped for another.

My daughter and I kicked off our summer movie sessions today with Gorjira (sp), and we both enjoyed it. The audience clapped at the end of it. It was pretty much what I expected style wise since I first watched Monsters a couple months ago. Many people with their complaints are legit and the human element ala transformers drives me nuts at times too and with such a stellar named cast would people have been happier had that aspect been a lesser know one instead. I enjoyed the cloverfield like

Thought it was amazing.

This movie was amazing, everybody complaining about not enough Godzilla clearly never saw the first one.

If it had been an hour of Godzilla it wouldn't have been enough.....he was just ridiculously cool. That said, I really enjoyed all the time they spent on the MUTOs to build them into a threat, then let Godzilla come in as the cavalry. And that breath weapon was just flat out AWESOME!

Aaron T.J. and Elizabeth Olsen to me convinced me of there do all you can do to survive the wrath and get back to eachother. David Strathairn's military role was how I would expect any military guy would try to take care of the threats while not listening to the Scientist/role played my Ken Watanbe/ until he utterly fails. Great cut scenes between the monster fighting in my opinion. All in all way better then america's first remake, sorry mathew brodrick, but im going to buy this Godzilla movie as soon as it comes out on dvd. Thanks for bringing back the King

Mostly enjoyed it

But as people have been mentioning, they focused too much on the human drama. I'm sorry, but having Godzilla show up at the airport, roar at the MUTO and then cut to Elizabeth Olsen trying to check on Aaron Johnson's flight while her son watches bits and pieces of Godzilla fighting on the TV in the background is a shitty move. It doesn't build anticipation for later in the movie, it builds anticipation for that scene within itself, only it doesn't give you the pay off. And they do it a bunch of

It doesn't build anticipation for later in the movie, it builds anticipation for that scene within itself, only it doesn't give you the pay off. And they do it a bunch of other times in the movie. The whole thing plays like a Godzilla ride at Universal Studios or something, where you go on a train or whatever, and then see brief glimpses of Godzilla wrestling with a MUTO in the background while the track shakes. I paid to see Godzilla, not to see the bland and in many cases pointless characters catch brief glimpses of Godzilla in their peripheral vision while they did whatever boring and dumb thing they were trying to do (and let's face it, most of the things the human characters in this movie did were DUMB).

But ultimately, I liked it. I was willing to overlook all of the really poor decisions Edwards made throughout the film in favor of the fight at the end. I just hope that if they green light a sequel, they either sit him down and explain to him that audiences aren't paying $13 a pop to be cockteased with 'Zilla fights that you don't even show for 2 hours, or they find a director who understands that people paid to see 'Zilla wreck shit, not stand off in the background while we focus on the human characters who aren't even doing anything worth watching.

Great movie - Get your own opinion

I love how most comments jump on the 'characters are flat' or 'Garth Edwards was too afraid to use his budget' bandwagon. I went to the movies expecting to watch the film for what it was, and what I got was a great movie. The characters were Supposed to be simple because this movie was about the Monsters. The characters were there to help tell the story of how the MUTOs came to be and what Godzilla's purpose was in destroying them. Just like in the Toho films. The entire reason Godzilla

The entire reason Godzilla was teased through the film and not blatantly onscreen the entire runtime was to build up to his appearance. This is Godzilla! When he made his entrance, the audience pretty much erupted. The audience applauded all through the movie and gave a standing O at the end. The theater I was in must've been treated to a different movie than everyone else because we enjoyed what we saw.

Again, someone not actually listening to the criticisms. How many times can people point out the same exact complaints before you see that the "suspense" was more like teasing people with a monster battle, and then cutting away to tedious human stuff really irritated a huge segment of the viewers? Even Toho wasn't that bad with their stupid little human side stories over the years, to actually cut away from Godzilla doing his thing, to cut away to see an irritating lead.

Comparing the acting/human drama to Pacific Rim or Cloverfield is a joke. This was LIGHT YEARS better. Yeah, you saw more monster fights in Pac Rim, but things didn't look nearly as realistic, the final fight was completely anti-climactic, and you went from the opening to NOTHING but people giving exposition for an hour before the next fight (and they still didn't explain things like WHY it was decided to use robots or WHY the leaders decided a wall was a viable defense. The movie got destroyed by the critics for leaps in logic like that, and I didn't see any of those in Godzilla. Even though Watanabe had a gut instinct about Godzilla being the answer, the military still chose to do it their way until there was no other option.

Totally solid movie with some moments of true awe-inspiring visuals. Hopefully they build on this and can make the next one even more action filled.

Had some cool moments and Cranston acted the hell out of a mediocre script, but Gareth Edwards was afraid of his budget with all that cutting away at the last second and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's acting was BARELY serviceable. They wasted Binoche. Elizabeth Olsen was pointless. Everybody in the film died from the nuclear fall out sono real happy ending. Every element of the film felt on the cusp of being legitimately good but fell short.

I haven't been on here in forever but @slimer he never mentioned Batman once. Also, how does one film screwing up somehow okay another movie from making the same mistake? I could be wrong but it's the radiation that moves and spreads throughout the winds that kills most people, not the blast.

Yeah the Batman thing was more of a "youre nitpicking things that other movies get away with". I forget I have to spell things out on these message boards. I guess the movie needed to spell it out a little more that the MUTOs suck up and absorb radiation....that missile was feeding all those unborn MUTOS....there was probably not that much radiation left in that bomb also it depend in which way the wind is blowing (in order for the radiation to spread) but once again this is all stuff that

I had sky high expectations for this, and ultimately I really enjoyed it. But I actually agree with most of the critics on this one.

Rating the monster action and Godzilla himself -easy 1010. The MUTOs were different, creepy, cool, and very well designed, and the scenes with only them were really good. Then when Godzilla showed up holy cow he is insane and the roar was incredible. The fight scenes were clear and wide and the destruction was awe-inspiring. Gaerth Edwards knows action and

Then when Godzilla showed up holy cow he is insane and the roar was incredible. The fight scenes were clear and wide and the destruction was awe-inspiring. Gaerth Edwards knows action and effects and it shows here. And I didn't mind them not showing Godzilla very much until the last half and then in short doses (but that one cut-away in San Fran when he is about to fight the first MUTO felt forced and took away from the epic build up of the previous 10 minutes.) But with build up and lots of human drama, you have to have some good drama...

And that was the most disappointing part for me. It wasn't terrible, but it could've been sooo much better. You have this amazing cast and they were mostly forgettable. Bryan Cranston was great but he's not even in half the movie? And I understand the people saying "this is Godzilla who cares" but this had so much potential to be one of the classics (Jaws, Jurrasic Park) but the script just doesnt give them much to work with. But even with the script they had, it seems they couldve made us connect more with the characters. Which I don't get because that's the only reason Edwards other movie, Monsters, worked - you care about and connect with the characters. So Edwards has potential to be a great director, and hopefully he will do another Godzilla.

So overall this is definitely worth seeing on the biggest screen possible, but if the human drama had been as good as the monster action, this would've been an instant classic. Hopefully the inevitable sequel (since it is tracking towards $80+ million) will fix these issues.

unfortunately very dissapointing

I'd still give it a pass (6 out of 10) because it had some great moments. But why can't they ever put some interesting humans in these films? Cranston was great, but Kickass, even though he is a good actor, was so fucking bland. Other good actors like Watanabe, Sally Hawkins and Elisabeth Olson had nothing to do but stare in awe. Also it kept building up momentum and then killing it. Which was fine at first, but after an hour the trick got kinda old and tired. When I saw the trailers I thought

Both flawed movies, with boring characters, but some spectacle which still makes it worth the price of admission.

I kind of forgot/forgave the shoddy build up on the final act had played out. Cutting away from the initial fights was quite frustrating, especially the first one which only appeared to last a minute or so, they may as well have shown it as a tease.
How they played out Crantons character after the marketing they did was criminal, had things played out differently here, the build up might not have been so tedious.

I loved it. They finally got Godzilla right in all aspects. Yes, the plot was somewhat lame and the human element was flat and a tad dull, but since when has a Godzilla movie ever been about plot or the human element? All I wanted to see was Godzilla kick 21st century ass, and that he did. When he was on screen he completely owned! My only issue was that there wasn't enough of him on screen., and Every time he would show up, I thought "now he's gonna kick ass!" And as soon as a fight would

After the Emerich Godzilla this is a fantastic, No Epic maybe, but a great comeback for the king of the monsters.
i give a 8, maybe needs more Godzilla, not great lines for actors, more screen time for monsters fights, but you can love this godzilla and deserves a part 2.

Absolutely Epic!

One of my biggest tests for if a movie was enjoyable or not is the rewatchability factor: it's sky high for Godzilla. Honestly, I had a big stupid smile on my face for most of the running time of the movie. Yes, Godzilla's actual screentime is minimized...but holy cow, does that make it so much more effective. The little hints and teases of Godzilla in the beginning never get old. It just ups the ante, the suspense, and the anticipation, and the pay-off is SO worth it. I didn't even mind the

I didn't even mind the human characters all that much. Cranston is the obvious standout despite his little screentime, and the biggest mistake was shifting the focus away from him. He could've easily carried the movie. But Elizabeth Olsen is fantastic, and while Taylor-Johnson's character is a bit bland, his dynamic with his father and the humanity the actor injects into the role help make up for it. And don't even get me started on that 3rd act. Absolutely phenomenal, and it puts the enjoyable Pacific Rim to shame. Solid 7/10 for me!

EDIT: After reading some other comments, I have to point out the absolutely incredible sense of scale that Edwards manages to portray. The monsters look MASSIVE, and Edwards knows exactly when to do a close up on the fighting, and when to do a wideshot so we can drink it all in. You could tell he was influenced by movies like Jurassic Park...especially with how there's at least 2 blatant homages that he pays to that classic movie. Awesome!

We saw it on IMAX and it was just spectacular! I was genuinely shocked by how much time the MUTOs got on screen. From the trailers and criticisms I didn't think there would be that much of it, but it really gave the movie something great to do while it was building to the finale.

I wish the fight could have gone on even longer, but that ending was just legendary! Now THAT'S how you do a breath weapon!

I seen that, and I was dreading that being true. Most of us complaining about plot points and bland characters still gave the movie passing scores, mostly due to how badass Godzilla was when we actually seen him.

1998 also had the Joss Whedon rule of Drama. "For God sake, tell a joke"

That movie sucked, but kept me enthralled. This movie was so serious, it became tedious and boring to the point that even the climatic battle was strangely silent and boring.

So, you're basically saying 1998 Godzilla is better than this version? Because what makes a character great is the amount of screen time? I mean, I am just trying to understand what point youre trying to make by pointing this out.

A movie about marines, brave american marines, and more marines. And yes, like 15 minutes involving some giant monsters. I didn`t really enjoyed ACT OF VALOR 2 .... wait.... that was Godzilla? O no! noooo!

The MUTOs were on screen for about 40 minutes. No, it wasn't the WWF wrestling Godzilla we've all come to expect (and even that is silly because very few Toho films showed him for more than 1/4 of the movie), but I liked that. When he finally appeared for real, the fights were spectacular. Would I liked to have seen even more? You bet your ass! But this was so much better than the 2nd best monster movie I've ever seen it's ridiculous.

I've never been so bored watching something so cool. The pacing was just...quiet and dull. Aaron Taylor Johnson was surprisingly bland and Bryan Cranston had the only energy behind his performance. I give the first 45 mins a 7/10 and the rest of the movie a 5/10. The battle scenes were extremely boring and repetitive until Godzilla finally breathed fire...my brother leaned over to me and said "I was wondering when he was finally going to use that"

It's easier to forgive a giant primitive lizard for wrecking half a city while fighting other giant monsters than it is to forgive a cognitive thinking person for wrecking half the city he's supposed to be protecting. No one expects Godzilla to give a shit for knocking down a bunch of buildings while fighting his enemies. But Superman is supposed to prevent that sort of thing from happening.

i had pretty low expectations going in so i wasn't that disappointed in it even though I still didn't really like it. I will say that the sound design was really good. You should see this in an imax or another type of theater with 7.1 surround sound. They did a really good hob with that.

Loved it. Easily an 8/10 for me. I liked that this was a human story and that it was about the plight of humanity against something that they can't defeat/control. I do think the human side could have been a bit more interesting and that there could have been a bit more Godzilla, but I loved his epic nature and how titanic he was treated. He really was larger than life, and it felt like it. Luckily, I really liked the MUTO, so all the scenes with those and the destruction they leave behind was

I didn't like it

I'd give it a solid 2/5 stars. I had reasonable high expectations for this film seeing some of the early reviews for the film. I was intrigued by the human story of the film but it never grasped me enough to care for the characters. I also felt like it took too long to introduce Godzilla, and once we actually saw his face the scene literally cut and moved onto a different human scene. I saw epic monster action I've been wanting to see for a long time. I just wanted much more of it. The pacing

I saw epic monster action I've been wanting to see for a long time. I just wanted much more of it. The pacing was way off for me as well. They kept going from place to place every ten minutes or so and it annoyed me to a point where i cared less and less about the story and it built my need for chaotic destruction. Some action sequences were shown on TV news reporting and I was left wanting to actually see the fights and feel the punches. It's a disappointing tease for me. The last half hour was amazing, I wish the fights were longer and we had more stylized sequences to make the audience cheer in pure enjoyment. To me, the fight between King Kong and the two T-Rex and even the Jager vs. Kaiju fights were more enjoyable. I loved the cinematography for the film. The tone was perfect and the music was exceptional. Just give me more Godzilla goodness please...

I've seen them all and really enjoyed this version! It had plenty of monster action though for the life of me I can"t figure out what vintage toho monsters the muto were supposed be a homage too like the director claimed... they looked like a mash up of daie studios gaos and the craptacular cloverfield farce. would have perfered amore stylized monster design instead of such bland simple looking opponents.

Assumptions: Anyone in this thread has seen the movie so if I post a spoiler, too damn bad.
It kinda reminded me of Cloverfield. We had all the teases of the monster then the end gives us the meat. Only thing is, I kinda liked the people in Cloverfield more. Kickass was boredass, he felt like he was phoning it in. However, I did like the multiple times he was tired and passed out and done. It actually made him seem more real in that respects. Not some soldier who falls, fights, keeps going

Not some soldier who falls, fights, keeps going doing the impossible like we see all the time. So that was kinda nice, imo anyway.
Like many, they focused too much on him, his wife and Watanabe staring vacant at the world. When the big reveal happened, it should have given us a brief, or less brief, battle instead of what they did. Reminded me of Devestator from Revenge of the Fallen. We see these vehicles combine into an abomination, and it cuts away to other things instead of watching it do some damage first. Godzilla's reveal was great but anti-climatic.
The last half hour was pretty damn awesome and I did like the MUTO's looks and their carnage so for that, I am happy.
Did it meet my expectations? Yes and no. The human element was not up to par but the Muto's and King of Monsters where fantastic....plus it is SO much better than the 1998 film, which also had eggs, but thankfully didn't have time to hatch in this one to chase around our pretty much singular cast member.
Human aspect 4/10
Godzilla 9/10
Maybe next film will have more Godzilla and less humans...but I keep saying that about Transformers too.

The difference here though is that Superman and his fellow Kryptonians are tiny compared to Godzilla vs Mutos. So really, if anyone complains about Godzilla's city damage, take scale into account...Superman could have done more to get them away from the city, Godzilla is the size of the city. It would be like comparing apples to planets.

Yeah that's a terrible comparison. Not sure Godzilla is well-known for being an inspiration for hope for humanity and does whatever he can to protect and save them. Plus, at least we got several reminders that cities like San Fransisco were mostly evacuated by the time the destruction took place. Man of Steel had a Superman that couldn't have cared less for the people or the destruction he was causing, without even a hint that the city was being evacuated or quarantined or anything. Destruction

Very good, BUT...

Way, way too much boring human interest parts of the story, and not enough actual Godzilla action. The film teases the action so much and then cuts away from it to show what the human characters are up to, as if we really went to the movie to see what the boring generic soldier and his wife are up to, and how their kid is. Luckily, the Godzilla action, when we do eventually see is spot on and I love it, but I really felt a bit ripped off with the lack of Godzilla in a Godzilla film.

seriously folks

I'm really starting to think that we as a society are just bound and determined to be underwhelmed. We do remember this is a film based on films where a man (probably man) in a giant rubber suit destroyed model cities? I mean, people are talking about the performances and acting... come on! It's a movie about a giant dinosaur that destroys stuff... Sigh. Not like I watch a bond film and ask how all those bullets missed lol. Big monster. Destroyed stuff. Me happy.

Well Made with Some Flaws

First and foremost, Godzilla was realized perfectly. His look, his roar, his personality, all what we hoped it would be. I just wish there was more of him in his own flick. I don't need wall to wall monster mash, but aprime examplw is when they cut away during his first fight, and we end up seeing glimpses of it on the news report. That action was sorely needed to breathe life into all the exposition/setup up to that point. Still, it was well made, the filmakers obviously have respect for

You call them flaws I call them a unique way of doing action scenes in a movie that has to do with monsters less really is more, take Cloverfield for instance.

Not quite what I was expecting, but a really fun time at the theatre

I agree w/Bumbray and what a lot of other reviewers seem to think. I wasn't expecting this to be such a heavily driven character film, but that's not a bad thing. I just wasn't expecting Godzilla to be literally fighting in the background at moments as characters went about their business. The problem was the characters themselves seemed pretty inconsequential, I didn't really have any emotional attachment to anyone except the big guy himself. The acting was actually quite well performed, I

The acting was actually quite well performed, I just felt the characters as a whole were used as an obligatory means to show something other than monsters fighting for 2hrs. But when the film delivers it really delivers. When it comes to Godzilla himself they got him all kinds of right including themes and the public perspective of him. And the halo drop scene seen in trailers was amazing in IMAX 3D with a fantastic eerie score accompanying it! The Comic-Con Legendary Godzilla experience truly made me feel what it's like to be right in the epicenter of a Godzilla event, too bad the film couldn't quite capture the same magic. They should tour that for all to enjoy, it's completely awesome!

I thought this new interpretation of Godzilla was terrific. I thought the design and stature of Godzilla this time around was awesome and pretty frightening at times; along with iconic roar ever so often. The cast in this also did the best they could have with what they were given. I would have liked to have seen a little more depth from each one of the main characters and I feel like if we did get better written and handled characters, the film would have benefited more off of that; but it's

I would have liked to have seen a little more depth from each one of the main characters and I feel like if we did get better written and handled characters, the film would have benefited more off of that; but it's understandable though since Edwards had to find the right balance and screen time between the human characters and the monsters in the film. I did think that everyone was casted well for their respected roles and were much better written for a disaster type film then Bay has ever done for his human characters in his Transformers franchise.

The movie was well shot, including the awesome destruction and battle scenes and did a good job of utilizing and showing us how scary Godzilla can really be. I do wish Godzilla was in the film more, but maybe Edwards was nervous about showing us too much Godzilla at too many times. Or perhaps if Edwards comes back to direct a sequel, he'll flesh out Godzilla more in a bigger and grander way.

Anyway, I enjoyed it and though it had a good balance of storytelling with some awesome action sequences in between and am looking forward to a sequel. Now bring on Days of Future Past already!!!!

Most of these big monster movies suffer from seeing the best the monster has to offer too early in the film the final payoff never seems good enough. I loved what they did here, and the way Godzilla dispatched the last monster was brilliant!

After thinking about it some more, I agree with you. Especially the way Godzilla killed the second and last monster. Epic stuff there.

I went into the movie with very VERY low expectations ('cos fuck Gareth Edwards' Monsters...) and ended up really liking it. Sure, it has a lot of problems, in the end it redeems itself. Left the theater on such a high that I gave it a 9/10. And I'm sticking to it.

I gave it an 8 out of 10. I think that moviegoers have become really hard to impress when it comes to large-scale spectacle, to the point where a lot of us stifle yawns at seeing whole cities being levelled. I found Godzilla impressive. There was a genuine scale to the film and I was able to take what was going on seriously enough. Yes, there is very little characterisation (the protagonist is "the soldier" his wife is "the nurse", there's "the scientist") but I think it could've been far

Yes, there is very little characterisation (the protagonist is "the soldier" his wife is "the nurse", there's "the scientist") but I think it could've been far worse; the characters could've been annoying and extraneous (there's a big-budget blockbuster series that's onto its fourth entry now that comes to mind). Godzilla didn't have that problem for me and I did think there was enough of the titular creature, of the MUTOs and of Godzilla fighting the MUTOs for it to be entertaining.

I would suggest to anybody that they wait for redbox. Godzilla is the most under used character in the movie. The human side of the story is terribly done, and was hoping the whole time that the main character would eventually be stepped on. It's a pretty movie, and Godzilla is indeed the the Godzilla we all know and love, but he's only in it for about 20 minutes at most.

On the fence

I thought that Godzilla himself was fantastic, he's everything I expected him to be. The problem was the people. Cranston was surprisingly under used. Aaron Taylor Johnson and Liz Olsen were dull, and Watanabe was also underused,
I agree with the rating Joblo gave it

I liked the Intersteller trailer
