What did you think of...Guardians of the Galaxy?

08.02.2014

Marvel's second release of 2014 is finally hitting theaters and although based on a mostly unknown property, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY seems primed to kick some serious ass at the box office. Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, and Michael Rooker, the James Gunn directed space opera actioner is already generating a lot of positive heat in early reviews with our own Chris Bumbray giving it a 9/10 in his video review and Eric Walkuski giving the same for his. Those are damn solid numbers for a film that has always looked like the underdog of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and with positive word of mouth continuing to fly in, it looks like the studio will have another smash hit on their hands. You can catch up on all the trailers, TV spots, B-roll and more over on our You Tube channel by clicking below!

Now that you've taken your voyage to the galaxy and witnessed the Ooga-Chaka for yourself, we want to hear what YOU thought of it! You can POST YOUR OWN REVIEW of the film in the below strikebacks or on your own Movie Fan Central profile. Did Guardians exceed your expectations? Is this another step in the right direction for Marvel or is it a stumble? Let us know below! We'll continue to update the RT and MFC scores throughout the weekend!

I thought it was great and A LOT of fun. It did a terrific job of blending comedy, action, and drama all into one and I had a huge grin on my face the entire time. I thought Gunn did an amazing job of directing the film and brining these characters and universe to life. The cast also did an exceptional job with the standouts being Cooper and Diesel as Rocket and Groot. But everyone absolutely owned their characters and I was pleasantly surprised at how funny Bautista would be as Drax. But the

The cast also did an exceptional job with the standouts being Cooper and Diesel as Rocket and Groot. But everyone absolutely owned their characters and I was pleasantly surprised at how funny Bautista would be as Drax. But the entire cast was perfect and had perfect chemistry and banter with one another. Rocket was easily the heart of the film and stole every scene he was involved in. The bit about the prisoner's leg and needing it for a mission was hilarious.

The only aspect that I was disappointed with was Ronan the Accuser. I wish he had more of an arc or better motivation throughout the film and I feel Marvel has dropped the ball on another vital key villain in one of their films. But speaking on villains, one of the best scenes of the film was FINALLY seeing Thanos and hearing his voice. I think Brolin is going to do an exceptional job when he's finally given more to do; presumably in Avengers 3 when he's in action mode.

All in all I thought it was great and well worth the hype and one of Marvel's best films since Iron Man. Personally, I don't think it's their best, but it's in my top three behind Avengers, and Winter Soldier. And this is also the first Marvel film that actually made me tear a little bit while watching it (more so towards the end of the film). The soundtrack was also great as well and was executed very memorably thoughtful the film.

Film was alot of fun with a great balance of everything and anything. Can't wait to see Guardians eventually join up with the Avengers to go up against Thanos in Avengers 3. Will definitely be checking this out again this weekend. It's THAT good.

And the scene after the credits was insane.

So my bad with this one. What I was trying to say was that this is one of the best MCU films and personal favorites of mine since the whole MCU started with Iron Man. I was using the first Iron Man film as a starting point.

So just to clarify, Guardians of the Galaxy is one Marvel's best films up to date and one of the best overall since the whole universe began with the first Iron Man.

Sorry for the confusion.

created 2. other than the obvious assumption that it was a mistake. Iron Man is excluded for personal reasons or he meant in a different way. Either way, the best way to dodge a question is by attack! I didnt ask why do you read comments in general, i asked why do you continue to read comments from someone you dont like? You see his GREEN LANTERN avatar and skip that one, pretty simple concept. But misery loves company, why not bring other people down with you?

You had to create 4 different scenarios to explain what he MIGHT mean. We read the posts because we want to read peoples opinions on the movie. Then his make no sense. So we comment on it.

He got excited and forgot to include iron man even though he referred to it as one of the best.. Maybe since Iron Man was the first it's excluded from his personal list? Or maybe he meant iron man was the best at its time of release and he feels Marvel has succeeded in revamping the way comic movies are made once again, for a 3rd time. He obviously got his point across but my question is... If you don't like his posts... Why do you read them?

The last part is a bit confusing, you think its their best since Iron Man, but not their best. But # 3 on the list behind Avengers and Winter Soldier, so wheres Iron man on the list if its their best yet?

Can Marvel Studios do no wrong?

I really thought it would be hard to top the EXCELLENT Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but dammit Guardians did just that. If you dislike this film, you just don't like movies. I didn't want it to end! The characters, the visual effects, and the music are all top notch. There is SO much to love here.

It contains everything I love about movies, particularly movies that defined my tastes growing up. There’s action, adventure, humour, visual fireworks and just enough heartstring-tugging sentiment. The soundtrack is excellent as well, Star-Lord viewing his mix-tapes as precious family heirlooms and the only physical reminder of his late mother he has left. And ultimately, this is a movie about a ragtag bunch that may be far-out but are still relatable and are totally the kinds of people (and

Oh, and the post-credit scene for this one is the biggest treat any hard-core fan of the weirder corners of the Marvel Universe could ever want.

I didn't like it either. It's the first time nothing was added to the film in at least one of the credit scenes. I expected to see something about Thanos or some other potential villain. It would have been better if there was something meaningful, then the silly end one (like they did with Avengers and the Shwarma).

It didn't do anything for me since Yahoo has had the appearance as the #1 story on their front page all day. Maybe if it hadn't already been spoiled....

It was pretty damn good. Casting was pretty spot on, Saldana's Gamora was a little off, pretty sick to see Brolin's facial structure added to Thanos' frame rather than just the voice. It was a good mix of Marvel and Gunn, his voice really shows in the script (which makes me question Ant-Man even more). And that after the credits scene was fantastic, well done Mr. Gunn.

Every time a Marvel movie comes out, it becomes someones "favourite ever. How excellent is that?
The film was great. It had everything, and every cast member stole the show, which I'm pretty sure is impossible, but there we are. What I love about it the most, is how Marvel is willing to adapt anything and it be successful. No changing things up to add "gritty realism" because they're afraid their audience is to snobby or "grown up" to buy into it. They're willing to say:

No changing things up to add "gritty realism" because they're afraid their audience is to snobby or "grown up" to buy into it. They're willing to say:

"How do you top a God, two world class assassins, a radioactive mutant, a World War II time traveling super soldier and billionaire business man in a robot suit defeating an entire species of aliens that are being led by a God, by throwing a nuclear bomb into outer space through a dimensional portal?

Maybe with an anthropomorphic talking space raccoon with a laser gun who's best friend is a talking tree that only ever repeats one line of dialogue....Oh and they all live in the same universe"

This shows a hell of a lot of faith in the audience, and we are constantly rewarded by it. The after credits scene, without spoiling it, is incredible fun, and just goes even further towards proving this.

Loosing some verbal virginity here...

Yeah I'm high on GOTG so it's easy to over praise movies when you are high on them... But I have never thought this or said this about any comic movie before... That was one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. I don't think I've ever used the term 'instant classic' as well when talking about a movie I just saw, so here's my first time ever saying it. Guardians of the Galaxy is an instant classic.

I thought it was fantastic but I also have been waiting for this movie all year. Personally its my favorite marvel movie so far. It almost doesn't feel like a marvel movie which is good. It's nice to see them take a chance with something different and completely nail it. The movie had a perfect mix of humor, action and heart. I went in with a smile on my face and walked out with an even bigger smile. Can't wait to see it again.

One of the best times I've had at the movies in a long time. Such a fantastic ride. This movie is exactly why I prefer Marvel over DC. It isn't a mopey, serious, emoish movie. It is FUN. It is also hilarious. Haven't laughed this hard at a movie in who knows how long. Audience was laughing so much that some of the dialogue was missed. That's okay with me. Just gives me an excuse, as if I needed one, to see it again. Finally, that end credit scene. Oh man was just the cherry on top. 9/10

While I think Nolans Batman trilogy is still the pinnacle, this is hands down the best thing Marvel has come out with yet. Fun, emotional and action packed. The perfect summer blockbuster.

So damn good

I went in thinking "Eh, it'll be a fun flick because Marvel is doing some good stuff right now" while knowing almost nothing about the Guardians (other than what I wiki'd when the movie was originally announced).

I left thinking that it was one of Marvel's better flicks and the ensemble worked as well opr better as the Avengers did.

Pratt is the perfect wiseass, Rocket is the heart of the group with some deep issues, Groot is this powerful but childlike creature, Zoe played Gamora

He had so many funny moments.

Loved it. I went in not seeing any more than the trailers released (no clips, no BTS stuff) and knowing next to nothing about the Guardians as a whole. I left the theater last night thoroughly surprised at how much I enjoyed what I had just saw. Pratt was everything that has been written about him before; I don’t see how he is not one of the biggest stars on the planet by this time next year.

The comedy was laugh-a-minute and truly funny, with Drax getting a surprising amount of deadpan lines in the beginning. The action looked great and everyone really seemed to be having a good time in their roles. If I have a complaint to lodge, it’s really with the villain Ronan and, to a lesser extent, Nebula. It’s really a problem I had with Malekith in Thor: The Dark World, in that there is nothing memorable about them. There’s an object they want and their motivations are barely described.

Nebula at least gets a backstory but for Ronan it’s just a description of who he is and nothing more. In fact, the whole political Kree/Nova Corp issue at the beginning it dropped within two minutes of it being mentioned. I would’ve appreciated at least five to ten more minutes on some true motivation for Ronan, but if that meant cutting any other scenes out of the rest of the movie, I’m completely fine with that.
Bottom line, I loved it and will definitely see this again in theaters and assuredly be buying this for my collection later on.

Hard to say anything that hasn't already been said at this point, but man, this movie was such a riot! I can't quite say it's the BEST Marvel film yet, but it's easily one of my favorites, if that makes any sense. People are going to focus on how funny it was (and rightly so. Unlike Thor 2 or Iron Man 3, all the jokes are perfectly timed and don't take away from any of the drama of the moment), but I'd have to say that with the exception of Captain America: The First Avenger, this is the Marvel

James Gunn really made us learn to love these characters, and despite a lack of sufficient backstory for Drax, Rocket and Groot, I ended up falling in love with each one of the unlikely bunch. Each one had their own moment to shine, and each actor has such outstanding chemistry with each other. Ronan could've used a bit more development, but that's a minor nitpick that's easily forgivable. Excellent movie, solid 8/10 for me!

I haven't seen a movie this good in a very long time, don't get me wrong other marvel movies have been pretty good, but this one... wow, it had amazing set design, excellent make-up, and CGI, and it made me laugh more times then a straight comedy. I'm going to see it again this weekend. totally worth another 15$

two large branches up

It was fun and vibrant and just a good time at the theaters. Certainly a top Marvel movie, though I probably still put Iron Man above it but that might be the only one. Loved the end credits sequence too. Rocket and Groot interacting were the highlights for me. Any issues are small nitpicking things. Main one is, like the large majority of Marvel films without Loki, the villain is bland and forgettable. All in all, great fun and highly recommended.

Bucky was pretty awesome. Villains are central to telling a great hero story. That's why the Batman trilogy worked so well. I also would put Avengers above this movie too. No movie since Jurassic Park had made me feel the sense of Wonder and fun like Avengers did.

Still, Guardians rocked.

While I've mostly been pleased with the Marvel movies I've seen so far, this is actually the second one (after Iron Man) I shelled out to see in the theater. And, like Iron Man, it feels like a movie made just to give you a good time. And that's something I think is sorely lacking in a lot of summer fare, that no-holds-barred fun! Yeah, the villain was kind of boring, but I blame that just as much on how off-the-wall the heroes were (Groot, Rocket, and Drax had me laughing incessantly). I'd

Fantastic movie. Lots of fun, all the main characters were great, and I loved the humor in it. It's one of my favorite Marvel films now. And I really liked that it was so different from all the other Marvel films. Felt like the grandest one, even compared to The Avengers, simply because of the scope. Can't wait until the world of the Guardians meets the rest of the Marvel cinematic universe.

This movie was great. Most fun I've had at a Marvel movie since the first Iron Man. It felt SO MUCH like the Bendis run of the comics that I expected to see his name in the screenplay credits. If you haven't seen it yet, for the love of all that is holy, stay until the very end of the credits.

You said it, bitch ! We're the Guardians Of The Galaxy !!

Simply the most fun I had in theatre this year !
Maybe not the smartest movie of the summer, maybe not the best Super-Hero (but is it ?) film of the year, maybe not the most heart-full movie of the summer (it's still HtTyD 2, for me)...
But EVERYTHING you need to feel better going out of the theatre than when you went in, you've got it right here !

Raising the bar

Marvel keeps knocking these movies out of the park. They just raise the bar over and over again. The best marvel movie to come out since the first Iron man. Admittedly I was hesitant at first, but it had me laughing, and tearing up at moments. I had a smile on my face the whole time and the howard the duck joke at the end was the cherry on top!

BAMF!

I went in knowing nothing about the Guardians despite being a hardcore comic nerd for years. I had zero expectations. And it probably is my second favorite Marvel movie ever. I liked it better than Winter Soldier. Avengers holds my top spot still because of my pre-existing love for those characters. This movie really killed it though. Def the funniest Marvel movie ever

Yeah, it's as good as everyone says....

My only negative comment (and it's barely that) is that some of the lines fell flat. Batista felt "off" in some parts and I don't know if that was him or the writing. It was still great, but I understand why some of the critics didn't care for it as much.....the writing wasn't nearly as tight as Avengers, although I thought it was much more fun.

Kudos to everyone involved.....it was spectacular and EASILY the best time I've had in the movies this year. It wasn't quite Star Wars, but it

Blew me away! It's a total blast to watch, feels fresh, funny, and the cast is perfect! Other than the movie being amazing, I'm so pumped to see more of Thanos in the coming years. Seeing him round up all the gems and take on the Avengers is going to be a once in a lifetime movie going experience!

I didn't like the soundtrack as much as some people and the plot was pretty unremarkable and clique. I even found the finial face off to be something of a letdown. Aside from that I thought it ran a bit too long and some of it was a little dumb (Rooker's weapon). however even with all that I had more fun than Winter Soldier (all thing's considered a better movie). The characters were all great and I'd watch it again just for the humor alone. also who thought the Tree based character was going

All you wonderful schmoes have just about said it all! Any complaints from me are just nitpicking details of this amazing film. I love how they included some awesome stuff for the comic fans and alluded to much more cosmos without alienating the non-comic audience, and not shoehorning them in like Quill's father (star prince ;) ) and actually showing a Celestial!!!!!! And I'm glad Cosmo didn't speak, I'm hoping that means they're waiting to find the proper voice talent for the sequel.

From the fantastic opening scenes, to the great sense humor, to the fun as hell action, to its big heart, to the surprising end credits, this film delivers on every level. I'd easily rank it with Back to the Future and Ghostbusters on that pure magical fun scale. James Gunn has truly made something special.

Not Marvel's best movie from a critical standpoint, I think that goes to Winter Soldier. But I have to say, this is one of the funnest movies I've seen in a long time, and that's all it wanted to do! Loved it, great tunes, great banter (learn genders!), and great moments that hold up next to Indiana Jones and the rest of them. I'm already speculating on the sequel, this was by far the most entertaining flick I've seen this summer. In the end, that's what I want from a Marvel movie anyways!

8 out of 10

Solid flick, not nearly as campy as the trailers suggested! Special effects were good, and the movie moved at a great pace, well directed. My one complaint would be the fight scenes, specifically Gamora's, felt forced, speed ups and cgi were very noticeable. My favorite scene without question was the Thanos reveal, cant wait to see him battle the Avengers!!! Rocket steals most scenes he's in, and Groot is instantly lovable (although I'm shocked Vin accepted a role that allowed only 4 words and

Drax was cool, some natural comedy throughout, and Star Lord was a good fit, it all worked. Do we need a sequel, no, I'd rather see counless others from the MCU, but when it's made, I will go see it.

Also, post credit scene 'SPOILER' isn't worth the wait, quick shot of Howard the Duck that you wouldn't be able to identify unless you knew it was coming.

I think he said in an interview with AMCmovietalk that he specifically took the role because it had only four lines of dialogue. Also, this means he can still show up in a Marvel movie later on as a different character, since he was a bit tied up with F&F7 when they were filming GOTG.

As far as I know, he WAS, but this (sorta) new Drax (after, YET another death/resurection) is a bit less strong.
Anyway, he wasn't an alien, in the comics, he was a human transformed after almost being killed by Thanos, when he murdered his wife and (he thought at the time) child (she later became the Moondragon, a bald telepathic warrior destined to evolve as the next Celestial Madonna... Well... Suffice to say it's complicated)

SPOILERS

Theres not much to be said that hasn't already been said, but yea, its a really great movie. Took the best things from Indiana Jones and Star Wars and basically combined them. Keeps a fun tone the entire time, perfect balance of CGI and special effects/makeup, and well fleshed out characters. The only 2 critiques from me are Groot growing back (Rocket seems really upset if Groot could do this), and the end credits scene was awful IMO. I don't know anything about Howard the Duck really, but

That's the joke, they made reference to a horrible movie and a terrible property they dug up from the bowels of Marvel's roster. I highly doubt Marvel would consider making another one after all the damage the '80's movie did.

I think the point was that Rocket didn't know Groot could grow back. It was a missed opportunity for Gunn, however because that would have been a great moment when Rocket realized his friend was still alive.

I'm with you on the end credit scene. The one with Groot dancing was awesome, but Howard the Duck was stupid. I am hoping beyond hope that they don't try to resurrect that idiotic film. The only good part of it was Lea Thompson in her underwear.

Okay

I saw it in Taiwan yesterday afternoon (Saturday) and the theater was packed. I liked it but I thought it was a bit too violent, with the stabbings in particular (by Groot and by Yondo). There may be some complaints from parents. It'll definitely have to be editted for television. The Avengers is currently being editted when it gets shown on TV (specifically the scene where Coulson gets stabbed or Loki gets pummeled).

As I said elsewhere, people are not going to worry about the fact that

A bit too violent ???? Are you kidding thats why films have ratings - this film was rating a 12A which states

'Films under this category are considered to be unsuitable for young children. Cinemas are only permitted to supply tickets to see a 12A-rated film to children under the age of 12 years if they are accompanied by an adult, aged at least 18 years. However, it is unlikely to be suitable for children under the age of 12.'

New Favorite Sci-Fi Movie

Best movie of the summer. Seen it twice. Best action I've seen in a long time. Amazing world building, effects, scope. Wonderful characters. Even the two-dimensional villains were so amazing looking. Thanos lived up to the hype. Chris Pratt is no Han Solo, but that's precisely as it should be. He feels like his own original character in the pantheon of good natured fantasy anti-hero leading men. Dave Bautista blew me away with his perfect performance. Zoe Saldana…did her thing. She plays the

She plays the exact same character in everything (LITERALLY the same character she played in Avatar, if you think about it), but that's okay. I couldn't recognize Bradley Cooper or Vin Diesel's voices, which made the astounding effects of Groot and Rocket that much more seamless. Just a fantastic movie, an amazing discovery of a franchise.

It's funny. Most of the kids at the theater where like. "I don't get it" when they showed the post credit scene.

I never thought I would see that particular marvel character on the big screen again. Some people clapped when he appeared.

I was unimpressed

I really enjoyed the first half. I wish the second half was as risky / inventive. All of the comedy felt right at home with the tone of the movie, but any time it tried for a heartfelt moment, it felt very forced / cheesy with insincere performances.

When the five finally team up, Gunn sidesteps all opportunity for further character development, character interaction or romance, and jumps right into the CG- heavy and uninspired climax. So I cared little about the outcome.

Hardly time is spent with the "Nova" government or any perceived conflict (incl development of the characters played Reilly & Close - huge wasted casting opportunity), that when Nova heroically steps in to assist the Guardians, it wasn't earned.

I might've enjoyed the climax more if the villains weren't so one-dimensional & unmotivated. It was just another generic threat to destroy the universe that felt very tired and overdone given Marvel's portfolio. It feels like they're remaking the same movie over and over again with different characters. And the obligatory sister-fight was also uninspired.

That all being said, I enjoyed the cast and really liked Pratt in this role. And I can respect why many people really love it. The tone / feel of the movie is great. But overall it felt like a low-rent Serenity to me.

Wasn't the Gamora and Quill in space thing also explained away by them having "enhancements" or something along those lines? On top of, y'know, not being human and [link] respectively.

Des. My complaints aren't stupid. They're my opinions. They're things that took me out of the movie.

The gravity thing was stupid. They'd be able to hold on to their weapons and fire. They were a millisecond from firing. Your telling me, all of them suddenly dropped their weapons? Not just one or 2 who were surprised but all? AND Im not even talking about firing AT THEM. Just firing in general. They even show them all the weapons being dropped. Not just one or 2 who were surprised but all? AND Im not even talking about firing AT THEM. Just firing in general. They even show them all the weapons being dropped. In a movie that's so fantastical I wanna see some a semblance of reality to keep me grounded. Yes its a nitpick but you don't have to tear me a new one for it. It's just my opinion.

Them standing at the entrance to the control room like they've always been the best of friends and have done this a billion times was too cliched for me. No they shouldn't of run away screaming. Of course they shouldn't have. But that shot should've happened much later. Again stop undercutting me for having an opinion.

Yes the saving of Zoe was stupid, from a script standpoint UNTIL you learn he's not human at the END of the movie. So yes, you are right about that. I should have clarified that I didn't buy it at the time.

The "Thanks dad" line makes me feel like Thanos isn't as magnificent and mysterious as he is perceived in the Avengers. He's comes of as simply another bad guy. It was like the line from The Dark Knight Rises when cat woman kills bane from the bat pod, and says something along the lines of "see, I told you guns were good" I thought it was too corny, and annoying. Like that scene in GOTG. It was too corny. It wasn't foreboding or mysterious or dangerous. Thanos is a character who is supposed to be the big bad of this entire marvel franchise and their true introduction of him just made me feel extremely underwhelmed.

Again, these are just my opinions, and I have the right to express them. There's no need to try to cut me down because you don't agree, or don't understand. I'm sorry I can't explain it better for you. Like I said before, I liked the movie. I just wasn't as emotionally invested in it as most people.

Marty. To that point I would say that those films are maybe higher forms of art. Like all movies are an art some may be deeper in meaning. But those are judged by their own merits. Like 2001 (my second favorite movie) shouldn't be put against Star Wars (also in my top 10).
I like movies for what they are. To me army of darkness succeeds in what it's trying to do the same amount as Lawrence of Arabia succeeds in what it's trying to do. Thus those movies are both great. In the long run Arabia

Marty, I could see your argument until you started listing the things that bothered you, then I realized you were just looking for something to complain about.

No, if the gravity was turned off nobody could have grabbed a gun and shot. You can't position your body (without touching a fixed surface) to shoot, and if you pulled the trigger it would launch you in the other direction at a speed that might kill you. Stupid complaint.

No, he wouldn't be dead. "Everything you know" is

No, he wouldn't be dead. "Everything you know" is irrelevant because HE ISN'T HUMAN. You have no idea who his father is, or how it would affect his ability to survive for a matter of seconds in space (the way he survived holding the infinity stone). Stupid complaint.

"Thanks Dad made him less...." Seriously, what does this even mean? Another character can't refer to him under their breath? It literally makes no sense. Stupid complaint.

"Heroes standing at the door......too soon...." Again, this is meaningless. They just broke out of one of the most secure prisons in the galaxy and you're saying they can't look back and preen? They should what.....run away screaming? They are criminals that are used to winning these kinds of fights and they're taking a moment to gloat. It's exactly what I'd expect them to do. Stupid complaint.

So while you're free not to like it, you probably should keep your criticisms to yourself if they're going to be that nonsensical. It undercuts your seriousness.

Okay, so I agree with some of your complaints…I agree that at times the acting/direction was a little weak (too much expository dialogue not being veiled in any way other than exactly what it is and that 'argument' on the Milano between Gamora and Drax was cartoonish), but yet other times it was incredibly strong. But side-stepping opportunities for character development? We're talking about a movie, not a t.v. series. There's no time in movies like this for character development, unless

Let the sequels inevitably happen.

I think of films that are actually filmed with film and shown with a film projector. You can video something and edit it together with a computer but actually cutting a film print with scissors and assembling a film together? That's an art. At least in my opinion.

I think GOTG was made with a lot of care and passion from the people making it. I did like it. I had a lot of nitpicking problems with it, of course but overall I think it was really fun. Im glad you enjoyed it too!

I liked the movie, thought it was fun, funny and I recommend it. That said I believe this is a solid list of the issues the movie had. The times they tried to go dramatic were mostly misses because there was not enough meat to most of the characters. They all became best friends way too quickly too considering where they were when they met. Villains were throw aways.

There's nothing here that screams "game changer" or a movie that I'll remember as a favorite 10 years from now.

Marty. All art is made to obtain money. Or do you get your paintings and sculptures for free?
Why do artists charge 1000 bucks for a sketch. They are doing it for money.
Film is a form of art. No matter the reason for its creation.

My point is that you do have to judge movies differently from each other.
I am not bashing here. If you think it's 5/10 or 10/10 or 1/10 that's cool. I have no problem with you.

Films are like art. You don't judge a surrealist painting on the same criteria as a still life. One is not better than the other but they are different.

Each movie is reviewed on what it's trying to do. Like guardians is just trying to be a fun cool movie that is entertaining while trying to deliver laughs and excitement and a bit of heart. If you feel it didn't than you have that right. I am not saying you shouldn't have your opinion. I am just saying that movies are judged differently

Villains. Everyone always complains about the villain just wants to destroy the world. We'll if he just trying to rob a liquor store then you wouldn't need the guardians of the galaxy. I thought Ronan was awesome.

Anyway everyone has the right to feel whatever they want. Sometimes a movie accomplishes everything it set out to do and for some reason I still don't like it. It is what it is. So you don't always need a logical reason sometimes you just don't like a movie and that's that.

For the record I fucking loved guardians. Haha

Agreed. I liked it but I couldn't fully connect with anything that was happening. I've also come to hate when characters give expository dialogue and they do it terribly. It happens ALOT in this. Too many things happened too fast in each scene for me to get a chance to care about anything.

The scene where Chris Pratt saves Zoe in space was too unbelievable for me to suspend my disbelief. He'd be dead. I get it. It's a fantasy. But it's space. Everything I've learned throughout my life says

The scene where Chris Pratt saves Zoe in space was too unbelievable for me to suspend my disbelief. He'd be dead. I get it. It's a fantasy. But it's space. Everything I've learned throughout my life says he would be dead. Also, Rockets plan of "turning of the gravity" happened. So you're telling me that THAT made all the guards drop their guns? Not one of them could hold on to their weapon and shoot at them. Also, in that same scene they have the cliche shot of the heros standing at the door looking bad ass and I kept thinking "too soon. It doesn't work here. It doesnt work yet."

I was also not a fan of Thanos. He was a character that was so mysterious and foreboding at the end of the avengers. Wasn't a fan of his voice unlike everyone else. The "Thanks dad" line really made Thanos seem less than what he was perceived to be at the end of the Avengers. At least to me it did.

The first thing I told my buddy when we got out of the theater was "I liked Serenity more" I was more enamored with the climax of them sending out a radio message than a huge battle to save a planet from being destroyed. It really tells you sometimes simplicity works so much better over visual overload. I also prefer Jane passing the cup to Simon rather than the more cliched scene in GOTG where they all stand up together. Things in serenity felt genuine where as they felt forced in GOTG.

Now, for the record, I don't think this movie is by all means terrible. I did like it. I loved Groot. I thought Chris Pratt was fantastic. I absolutely despised Dave Bautista's performance....at first. It then became completely endearing by the end. Rocket was wonderful.

Over all id give it a B- I was gonna leave my opinion to myself when I saw how green all the comments were. 100% green. That's amazing. But I'm even happier that someone had sort of the same opinion I had.

i agree with all that you've said,

especially with all of Marve's movies being the same. I enjoyed the movie, but i find with marvel they spend so much time on comedy (which works for them), that when there is a heavy moment that the audience is supposed to "feel" i never get the impact of the emotion they are trying to get me to feel. Also as you said, id like them to spend more time on the Villains as well..

Good fun movie, but you hit everything on the nail

I dunno. I don't really see why these films have to be judged at lower standards. A movie is a movie, regardless of the source material. Shawshank & Godfather are different genres, but not different leagues. Action / Adventure films don't need to cross into drama territory to be better movies, that wasn't what I was implying. There WERE heartfelt moments you're right, but I just thought they were cheesy and insincere. At the end of the day it's all just opinion.

**By Nova's assistance not being earned, I meant that the emotional impact of the moment wasn't earned (from a storytelling perspective). Had there been more conflict / screen time with Nova, that moment might have been really triumphant, but by that time in the climax I had checked out of the story.

**I don't think I'm necessarily being nit-picky if I thought the third act (arguably the most important and ultimately gratifying act) falls flat. To me it was a low-rent Serenity. I did notice a few parallels (not that Guardians was derivative of it, it wasn't). But they're similar in that they're both space-operas about a band of criminals thrown into the midst of a moral crisis and act selflessly. Serenity was about getting the message about the reavers broadcast to the world. It was about Mal finally finding believing in something again. It was interesting. Guardians was just about preventing mass destruction, which is what every Marvel movie seems to be about. And I just think it's starting to get old.

But I also understand that this is the film business and movies (today especially) are made for the lowest common denominator with international markets now equally important. Maybe that's why these films have such generic plots, so their stories can cross cultural divides more easily. I dunno. I just wasn't that impressed; and expected more from the trailers. I might like it as time goes on. Sometimes a film can grow on you. I generally like to see a movie 2-3 times before I really solidify my opinion. And I've only seen Guardians once.
3:21AM on 08/03/2014
That's a fair assessment. It wasn't with out it's flaws. None of them are. But it's kinda nit picking. And low-rent Serenity? Please.

Loved it! It was fuckin' awesome! My only wish... considering Pete was a kid in the 80s and most likely a fan of Star Wars... and since Disney now owns both Marvel and Star Wars... and this is a movie set in space, who's main character's last time on Earth was when Star Wars was at the height of its mania... it would have been EPIC if there was a nod or a reference in there somewhere.

It's the first Marvel film that I had no connection to coming in to it (I hadn't even heard of them until Marvel Studios announced the movie). As a result it's the first Marvel movie I went in to with absolutely no expectations (either way) at all. I've just come back from watching it, and like all Marvel films to date, it was enjoyable but Winter Soldier is still miles ahead of them all.

I absolutely loved it.
It may be a small thing but the way they framed the titlescene. It just rubbed me the right way and I knew then and there that I was going to love the movie.

The Howard the Duck in the comics is markedly different from how he was portrayed in the film. I'm actually really impressed that the character is getting a second shot, and it was the cherry on top of the fun, risk-taking sundae that is GotG.

Not as good as Winter Soldier, but better than X-Men. I had to warm up a little to some of them but the characters were likeable. The ending though, it just turns into a typical massive battle with a city being destroyed.

The trailers didn't impress me enough to make me want to go watch it in a theater. I tabbed it as a dvd movie. But after reading Joblo's review, I figured maybe it would be worth watching. I wish I would've listened to my instinct on this. The movie was good, but I could've waited for the dvd. It is not the best Marvel movie as some people are saying. It's not even the best Marvel movie of this year.

My Second Favorite Marvel film for phase 2....

Winter Soldier is still my number 1 phase 2 film but Guardians was a lot of fun. Good to know Marvel can do space opera. I hope the end credit scene was just a joke. One movie for that guy is enough, please no more remake/reboot for that character......

By the way, the Nova Corps kinda looked weak, no display of Nova Force abilities. They just look like ordinary guards. Whats up with that?

In regards to Ronan...

I don't recall Zod, Electro, Green Goblin, Rhino, Bolivar Trask, William Stryker, or Richard Nixon being all that remarkable as villains.

Stryker from X2 or DOFP? Cause Stryker from X2 blows Ronan out of the water. Zod was better too. Spiderman was an average movie so they obviously weren't very good. Trask was certainly even more underutilized but DOFP ended up with Magneto who is certainly more interesting than Ronan.

great

The perfect mix of fun, action, coolness, and humor. Both me and my 12yo son dug it. Looking forward to the sequel and whatever they pull together for the soundtrack (which was fantastic).

Don't Get It

Maybe it is b/c I'm an outsider with the comics, but I really don't get the hype. Outside of the intro, this movie couldn't remain serious longer than 20 seconds. Emotion was consistently diverted with comedy. I know the common response to that will be that is the Marvel formula. That the movie is a summer blockbuster that is supposed to be a good time at the theater.

I was really bummed to not like this movie b/c after such positive reviews I thought it would be awesome. I just didn't

I'd honestly suggest giving this movie another chance. Watch it again (I'd wait for the Blu-ray if I were you. Give some space so you can try to watch it objectively again), keeping in mind how light-hearted and humorous the tone is. Hopefully that'll help you gauge the movie on its own merits, rather than letting expectations or hype get in the way.

When one looks at this movie as a character-driven story, you might be able to appreciate the humor a little more. For me, it never undercut any of the dramatic moments (with the exception of Quill's dance-off with Ronan...though it didn't go on nearly enough to ruin the tension for me) and if anything, it actually helped develop the characters even further and give us more insights into their unique personalities.

And take it from me: I'm willing to bet more than half the users on this site AND most critics are also outsiders with the comics...and most of them (me included) LOVED this movie. Of course, it could be that this movie simply isn't for you, but I don't think it has anything to do with familiarity with the comics IMO. I definitely recommend giving this movie at least one more chance!

Loved It!!!

I loved every second of it. The best summer movie by far. Rarely can a movie entertain me, make me laugh, and almost have me cry. Admit it people. You guys were on the verge of shedding tears by the end.

Not going to lie, I hated both of the trailers. Did not want to go see this, the only reason I went was I got to see it for free. I am very familiar with the source material and It does have its share of problems, but all movies do. It was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Well worth watching in the theater.

I'm a little worried.

I wish it would be treated as a standalone trilogy, away from the rest of the Marvel movie characters. Marvel has an opportunity here to branch out as a studio and begin making disconnected stories for the movie medium. I hope they take that route. I know that's not the studio's intention, and that's too bad.

Meh

I think this film is grossly over rated. The artwork is absolutely spectacular in this film, but honestly that's all.

The film could have greatly benefited from having about a half hour cut out of it. The prison sequence was far too long. The story line was needlessly convoluted.

The characters were neat looking, but all they did through the whole film was bicker with each other. It just got tiring after a while. And while the animation on Rocket Racoon was superb, the voice didn't

And while the animation on Rocket Racoon was superb, the voice didn't really match the character. He kept shouting all of his lines, and that seems to be a shortcoming in some animated films where the voice actor seems to overcompensate. The villain and his motivation was poorly defined.

It felt like a 2 hour sitcom with amazing special effects. Honestly, for all its faults, John Carter was better.

7/10....Good, but not buy worthy.

And no way in hell is this better than The Avengers.

Probably the last thing I'll say on this, but probably not, I love that reviewers are throwing one of the infinity gems, one of the most powerful artifacts in the Marvel Universe and is building towards Avengers 3, is just being thrown in the MacGuffin category. Get ready to eat some crow in 4 years.
