What did you think of...Pacific Rim?

Jul. 13, 2013by: JoBlo

We've been stoked about the release of PACIFIC RIM since it was announced a few years ago, mostly because we are huge fans of the man behind the project, Guillermo del Toro, who we consider to be on the forefront of all things awesome in genre movie-making today, but also because....well, heck, the premise sounded amazing! To that end, we've covered it all the way through all of its trailers and TV spots, exclusive interviews with the cast and Guillermo himself, and most recently our reviews of the film which included Eric Walkuski's more guarded positive review, followed by Chris Bumbrays's love-letter review as well as the Arrow's 3.5/4 review posted today.

But as per most summer blockbuster films, we want to know what you thought of the film so please feel free to POST YOUR OWN REVIEW in our strike back section below (or to your Movie Fan Central profile) and we'll continue to update the Rotten Tomatoes and MFC reviews over the next few days as well.

Rotten Tomatoes: 200 reviews, avg score: 72%
Movie Fan Central: 8 reviews, avg score: 8.4/10

Great Fun!

I dont get why people criticize the film, the films has been sold as "An action packed film of Mechas V.S Monsters" and its exactly what it is!! iT TOTALLY DELIVERS that. I really enjoyed the film. It is true; Its not the most deep or tough provoking Del Toro film, But it isnt intended to be either. You can tell it was made by someone who loves and understand the Japanese movies and its a tribute to all of those old films: Ultraman, Gamera, Godzilla series...Etc. None of those films

And this film is great...cool action scenes, great design, beautiful photography, cool music and yes very defined sterotypes but come on it s a shut your brain off and enjoy the ride.

IMPRESSIVE!

Great movie but not perfect. There were 2 or 3 things that bordered on plot holes but didn't take me out of the movie. Impressive CGI for once.

Not a perfect movie but Ioved it. Big robots, big action, gorgeous spectacle. Perfect summer escapism, and tons of fun. The only downside was Charlie Hunnam. I didn't feel he was very good for his role. He pretty much wore one facial expression throughout the whole thing, and he had zero chemistry with his co-stars. Ron Perlman was epic however. (Best mid-credits scene ever!)

IT WAS AWESOME!!

I grew up watching Godzilla movies and The Transformers cartoon and this movie did my childhood some justice! This was exactly what it was supposed to be...and so far it was the most enjoyable movie experience this summer. The way the fights are shot are great. Because it takes time for Jaeger's to initiate and charge most of their actions you can actually follow each attack the way the movie was edited. Yes, a lot of the story took from other movies...but it improved on them. I give it a

Good not great

I saw the movie on Friday night and I found it to be a little predictable in spots and I thought it relied too much on caricatures rather than fleshed out characters. The action was good and that is what really saved the movie, but the plot was lacking. At least the dialogue was better than Man of Steel. Overall it was fine as a stand alone film but I don't think I would clamor for a sequel.

B+ (spoilers)

When the title card hit, I thought this was going to kick my ass from opening to close. Those first 10 or 15 minutes, however long before "PACIFIC RIM" hit to the booming score, put a huge smile on my face. I was literally a kid in a candy store, BUT, unfortunately, they do sell black licorice in candy stores.

A few things that disappointed me were the actual characters. I knew just from the speechifying in the trailers, my favorite character would be Idris Elba, and he was. But other than him, Raleigh, and Mako, I didn't really care for any of the other pilots. Now, granted, most of them weren't around that long anyway, but still, you'd like to give a shit about the people piloting the Jaegers. They kind of reminded me of the Bloodpack from Blade 2, another Del Toro movie; other than looking badass in shiny armor, you didn't really give a shit about them because they weren't given much to do or say. Also, I kind of hated that Stacker was teamed with the "Generic Dickhead Just to be a Dickhead" character in the final battle. I'd prefer he was teamed with Dickhead's father, who seemed more heroic. And seeing as Dickhead was such a dickhead and you didn't really care about him, it made Stacker's sacrifice less emotional. Sure, Dickhead is also making the heroic sacrifice, but fuck him, too little too late, because for the entire movie, you were just a dickhead and nobody liked you anyway. Charlie Day made me laugh, but I believe he's a doctor in this movie like I believed Denise Richards was a nuclear scientist in whatever Bond movie she was in. Of course, Ron Perlman is pretty badass in those gold-tipped shoes, and he steals every scene he's in as Hannibal Chau.
That being said, the visuals were everything I thought they would be, the action was just astounding, and even though the Third Act kind of ends with a whimper compared to the Second Act, which destroys the entire city of Hong Kong in perhaps the greatest action scene of all fucking time, I really cannot wait to see this movie again.

Jaegers bomb. Sorry, had to do it. . . Saw P.Rim this morning. Maybe 6 to 8 people in the theater in addition to my friend and I. The action was out of this world good. My only beef is w/ how close-up a lot of it was. Got lost in what I was supposed to be seeing here & there. The constant night and rain scenes didn't help much either. Still, epic battles. I was grinning ear to ear so hard I could feel it.

I'm surprised by how much the non-action didn't work for me. I LOVE Del Toro, but MAN,

7.5/10 - Really entertaining

Saw Pacific Rim earlier this afternoon, and I thought it was a great summer popcorn movie. Oscar caliber writing, acting, or over-all film? No way. The most entertaining movie I've seen this year? DEFINITELY. Del Toro knew the kind of movie he wanted to make, and he did just that.. Yes it has a some cheesy lines, yes there are a few plot holes, but I think the negative review have blown these way out of proportion. As for the fights? Wow. The camera (for the most part) allows you to see just whats going on and gives a great sense of the scale of Jaegers and Kaiju. The Hong Kong battle is ridiculous. My jaw was on the floor the entire scene. I agree with many other reviews though, why didn't they make one of the bigger battles happen during the day? The few snippets of battles / destruction during the day were awesome as you could see the Kaiju really well. Also, the Kaiju had some really awesome designs (you could see Del Toro all over them). Like I said, not the best movie of the year, but I think it is well worth seeing on the biggest screen possible. I really enjoyed it. 7.5/10

Pure awesomeness

Pacific Rim is epic in every way possible. Massive. Has a real, genuine human element to it. I loved the plot twist behind the Kaiju attacks. I also really enjoyed the credits scene. That was pretty funny. Definitely worth the price of admission. Go support Del Toro & his epic sci-fi masterpiece. Please.

that wasn't disappointing, rate it with This is the End and World War Z as the best this summer's had to offer so far.

Transformers is WAY BETTER.

The action sequences in Pacific Rim were great, but everything else was terrible. The movie was filled with bad acting and awful dialogue. The Transformers movies are much more entertaining.

*Spoiler ALERT*

yea it was totally like Avengers but with bigger plot-holes
alien invasian via a portal
but how did their pods just "float back" to Earth? Didn't they still need Kaiju DNA to have the portal open?

I loved it. I have no complaints with this movie at all. I went into this expecting to see a Godzilla style movie. And that's exactly what I got. This movie needs to do well. Legendary is also the company making the new Godzilla movie. There is speculation that they will merge the two properties Avengers style. How awesome would it be to see Godzilla making some Kaiju his bitch. Hell ya.

Mostly Good (Minor Spoilers)

The movie works as a whole, but has one huge issue, and a few small problems that prevented me from 100% loving it the way I was hoping I would (quick backstory- I own 95% of all Godzilla's movies and various other merchandise, as well as a ton of other kaiju films).

The big issue, the one that so many other people have as well- why in the hell are all but one of the (surprisingly few) major fights at night in the rain? If you were to pull a single frame from any of those fights, I wouldn't

The big issue, the one that so many other people have as well- why in the hell are all but one of the (surprisingly few) major fights at night in the rain? If you were to pull a single frame from any of those fights, I wouldn't be able to tell which one come from where. As such, this made the fights, from a setting design standpoint, be very same-y, and become boring. Which is too bad as they are shot (cinematography, etc.) exquisitely.

Second issue- The test drive sequence with Mako and the aftermath of such become moot, only serving to pad it's runtime. Had this had a proper payoff, that'd be awesome. Here's what I mean- instead of having the barely there other Jaeger pilots get crushed, why not have them be awesome, win, and show off their skills? Give us a reason to care and be invested them. After that hypothetical fight, have a day or two where are two leads strengthen their bond by doing stuff together (maybe repairing the mech, maybe playing cards, anything really) then do the 'crushed' action scene. Bam! Weight and dramatic tension are added and paid off for the test drive and to see how the now deeper bond will go.

Finally, not all the humor worked for me. Some of it felt forced at times, and that was annoying.

However, the movie looks beautiful. The Jaegers and kaiju look realistic and have weight to them, and the cast is uniformly outstanding. 8/10

Totally agree, especially with the other three teams. How cool would it have been to show the three of them, particularly the Russians, doing some other combat together? I do get part of it though---they weren't supposed to be a 'team.' I mean, they mentioned the Russians were a solo operation for like six years. The guy and his son were obviously a one-man thing, with the son being egotistical and saying there were too many 'mediocre pilots.' And the Chinese guys said like three

Spoilers* incase someone is still reading this: but if they did make us care just a bit more about them, then the deaths of the Russian team would have been really much more emotional. I mean. Not only getting crushed, but drowning connected to their Jaeger? Ouch.

This movie would have benefitted if it was the first of two, or three, or whatever. As in, this movie would be great for a prequel, but why not make the prequel the first movie? Show more footage of us slowly taking these thingsn down, and then developing the jaegers, and then having like a dozen teams from around the pacific. That would have been bad ass

I agree. They could have cut up the long portion between the first 2 fights by showing us the Chinese, Russians & Aussies in action.

LOVED IT

Simply amazing. Story was somewhat predictable and acting was a bit weak, but I actually felt invested in the pilots and their connecting through the neural link. Action and visual effects were amazing. Definitely enjoyed it more than Man of Steel, but not as much as Star Trek into Darkness.

Not great

I really wanted to love this movie....went opening night with friends. Not sure if it was the friends I saw it with, but I didn't really appreciate it. Best & Worst Parts

Worst First
1. Too many fights at night in the rain. Why couldn't one fight be on a clear sunny day? The Anchorage fight would've been sweet in the sunlight.
2. I couldn't feel bad about Rinko's parents dying cuz they never showed me that. Telling me doesn't have the same affect and that's Screenwriting 101. In "I Am Legend" we see how Will Smith's wife and kid bite it and for me that moment was shocking and I felt bad for Smith the rest of the movie.
3. I couldn't feel the connection

3. I couldn't feel the connection between Idris and Rinko because......well see the comment above. They never show us how Idris raises little Rinko cuz they only hint at it. Now, I realize the movie ran over 2 hours, but if they cut out other worthless scenes and replaced them with real emotional drama scenes, it woulda paid off in spades and still kept an acceptable 131 minutes.
4. Charlie Hunnam's acting was a bit stiff.
5. Idris was a touch over the top and some of his dialogue was terrible.
6. Why were the pilots (inside the Jaegers) talking out loud to each other when they're supposed to have linked minds? Shouldn't we have heard them speaking back and forth with a telepathic, echo-ey tone to it?
7. They could have done so much more with the cliched stick fight scene. I could go on for days about how they threw away an opportunity to get me emotionally invested with the 2 lead characters and failed with that scene.
8. Gee, I didn't see the category 5 thing coming.
9. They should have shown the all out assault on the first Kaijus instead of a couple F-22 Raptors firing bullets at it. Bullets? Really? Come on. If you wanna go balls to the wall Mr. Del Toro and impress me I wanna see cruise missiles, airplane mounted lasers, ship mounted rail guns, covert black project shit and by God drop a nuke on its head and show how the sucker survived.
BEST PARTS NOW
1. Ron Perlman's line in the credits is the best line in a few years.
2. The score was beyond excellent.
3. Charlie Day's performance was spot on.
4. Close behind is Ron Perlman as a blackmarketeer.
5. The strategic elements to the fights. I'm talking about using the elbow punch, the sword and the coolant venting at opportune times. More of that savvy thinking would've been awesome.
6. Me walking past Charlie Hunnam for a split second when he enters the Mess Hall for the first time. Why they didn't have me with my shirt off is a mystery for the ages and has clearly lowered box office ticket sales drastically among females ages 19-65.
7. The Kaiju coming after Charlie Day cuz of the 2 way link was a great story point.
8. All the designs were fantastically creative.
9. Pregnant Kaiju giving birth.

A bit dumber than one would expect from del Toro, and the Kaiju were perhaps a little too derivative of Toho's classic monster movies, but Pacific Rim was still a bunch of fun. It has the sugar-rush enthusiasm of a Saturday morning cartoon, and if you can enjoy it on that level then you'll have a good time with this film. There's not much more to it than robots punching the crap out of monsters, but it's an entertaining cheese-fest.

Disappointing and dull - GDT's worst film to date.

I had hoped for a lot from this film, but terrible script, ghastly [link] and (with one exception) no character tension made the fairly spectacular visuals feeling as empty as Bayformers. A film requires more than just flashy visuals to make it worthwhile and this film is without any kind of heart or even internal logic and consistency. The premise for the film is undermined fairly quickly and the drama rendered flat by the use of an effective super weapon (sword) about half way through. The

The problem is that this weapon is clearly nothing new and they've used it before, but off screen, so the whole thing becomes pointless. Even the big-bad is at risk from that sword, but proof against a gigatonne nuke (the use of which would have essentially destroyed all Pacific Rim cities on its own!)
Poorly considered and only of interest to the 8-14yr market and FX junkies. And this is me as a geek speaking. 3/10 = Waste your money if you want, but don't say I didn't warn you.

They should have shown the all out assault on the first Kaiju and how a nuke couldn't destroy it.

I agree the movie lacked real emotion and logic was kinda thrown out the window.

And didn't Idris tell Hunnam he had a new plan to get a nuke in the breach. But later on his plan was just to deploy a bigger nuke? How is that a new plan? It wasn't till the final moment that the scientists realized you had to use a Kaiju to enter the breach and plant the nuke. Brutal logic.......poor writing.

Prophecy, you didn't pay attention. Elba was going on the advice of one of the scientists who's theory stated that the rift would stabilize as more and larger kaiju came through. A theory that was wrong... but not bad writing.

This movie is exactly what the Transformers movies should have been. The best time i've had in a theater in a long time. Loved this movie.

AWESOME.

Quite possibly the best summer movie I've seen in a quite some time. It was everything and more that I want a summer movie to be. It felt like I was on a ride from start to end. And the battles were immense with so much color and love it was insane. A deft must see film, try catching it in 3D in IMAX best possible way to see this film. I can't wait to see it again. And to everyone saying there's no character development they are clearly out of their skulls, yes of course this doesn't have drama

You feel for the characters. I can't wait for the 2nd one and I hope the 2nd one happens. I couldn't of asked for a more cooler movie then this.

It was a lot of fun. It was nice to see a big action blockbuster that was actually lighthearted--as much as a movie about the world being destroyed by giant Lovecraftian horrors can be lighthearted, anyway.

Real question is what did you think Joblo? I bet some readers, myself included, would kill for a new review from you this summer!

WOW

Pacific Rim was my most anticipated film of the summer, and I couldn't be happier with the product I got. Superb fight/action scenes, beautiful visuals, fantastic 3-D, strong performances, great characters, A fantastic story, some tender moments, and some surprisingly good character development. I couldn't say enough good things about Pacific Rim. It's the event film of the summer. Guillermo Del Toro shows Michael Bay how it's done. Without a doubt in my mind, this is the best film I have seen this summer...it's certainly the most fun I have had in a movie theater in quite a while. Pacific Rim brings some magic back to the action/epic film genre, magic that has been sorely missed for a while.

Deadline is predicting a 37 mil opening weekend, which isn't great but isn't a disaster either. Predictably it has opened huge in all foreign markets so financial disaster has likely been averted. It will likely open #2 in the US to Grown Ups 2 which...whatever. Keep reaching for the stars, America.

I just read that 'Grown Ups 2' is beating PR for Friday sales. What? The future foretold by Idiocracy seems to get closer everyday. When great sci-fi like Dredd and Pacific Rim fall under the likes of shitty comedies and rom-coms... It just says a lot about the masses.

I haven't seen the film yet, but I can comment on the marketing of the film and it was awful. The poor tracking (which has been a strangely huge story considering I assumed most people had no idea what tracking was) was a result of a marketing campaign that focused on the least important elements in the story (namely the people) and failed to build any enthusiasm or excitement at all.

Like I said, haven't seen the film, but if it does falter or fail it will have at least as much to do with

How does a PG-13 movie about giant robots beating the shit out of monsters not perform at the box office?

Michael Bay does it, gets trashed...Del Toro does it, gets a blow job

It was what I predicted, meh. Is a good thing someone bought my ticket, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to say TOLD YA SO! It was Transformers/Neon Genesis mash up. He should have just made it a Neon Genesis adaptation instead, it would have actually been better. And to you "THUNDERSTORM" guy below this comment....to demand that negative opinions about the movie not be posted is insane. You are of a weak mind that you can not accept that some do not like the movie, or were at least

I think the difference is people know Del Toro is capable of more as a filmmaker. He has a track record. So if he makes a popcorn movie that is just meant to be fun then people know that it was intent all along and not just because he is capable of nothing more.

People have no such faith in Bay. What you get from Bay is everything Bay is capable of every time. When people believe someone to be an actual artist-- which is to say someone with a point of view and some abilities-- then they

He is a one trick pony. Just a theory.

A squashed epic

Pac Rim was a good movie. However it lacked what made movies like TDK, and LOTR so successful: an extra 30 minutes. Too many of the screens felt rushed (i.e. Idris Elba's "pump up" speech at the end). The battler scenes were outstanding, however if the filmmakers would have invested more time in the "cool" human moments, this good movie would have been pushed to the classification of great.

Do your research, especially when it sits a few inches above the box you are typing into. I never shit on MAN OF STEEL. What I said (and I'm paraphrasing myself here), is that people sucked that movie off, ATM style, and in my humble opinion, PACIFIC RIM is a far superior cinematic accomplishment.

It was my mistake. When you wrote that anyone that preferred Man of Steel to Pacific Rim made you"weep for the future" I didn't know you actually meant that as praise for MOS. When you followed up by calling those same people retarded for their preference I was even more confused. Who knew that was also a compliment?! Was your "humble opinion" represented by calling everyone here a "poseur" who is "seriously retarded"? Is it opposite day?

In that case you are an incredibly mature person

Delivered As Promised!

This movie just raised the bar for cool visuals in any kind of movie. Action was intense, and the sheer scale of the Jaegers and Kaiju was phenomenal. Other films like Transformers really need to buck up and rethink their strategy, because Pacific Rim is now the coolest looking thing to ever grace a big screen. Characters were flat, subplots were pointless, and comedic relief was annoying at times, but all that aside and the movie still delivered big. It promised monsters vs robots and on that

I had a ton of fun with this in spite of probably the worst showing I've ever had at my theater. It kept cutting out on all the really important scenes (playing sound, not video). Visually it's spectacular. I can't count the moments I had to pick my jaw off the ground the action was so breathtaking. Story wise, it kept things serious but not to the point of being either grave or tongue in cheek.

Now I have to wait until next week when the rest of the family gets together so I can take

Now I have to wait until next week when the rest of the family gets together so I can take them to see it again at the local IMAX which for me is still too far away (seriously it's like 60 miles no matter where I go). Even for a second showing I can't wait to see this again.

Well worth every second of a very long wait!!!

One of my favorite life moments was getting GDT to sign my copy of pan's labyrinth . I was one of the last ppl in line at comic-con and the vast majority of ppl in front of me were only getting the supplied pacific rim announcement postcard signed at the legendary booth. It was so early they had a different logo and most ppl infront of me had no idea what it was, a lot didnt even know who GDT was and just got in line cuz they saw a line (you'd be amazed at how much that literally happens at

He was so stoaked to see someone bring a pan's labyrinth Blu ray that he grabbed my hand and gave me a big hand shake with a HUGE smile on his face. He made me a devoted fan for life! Been waiting on this movie ever since! And in hind sight it was a very tasteful move to sit on the movie and delay it after the 2011 pacific earthquake and resulting Japan tsunami. I love a deep philosophical movie as much as the next moviegoer but I can wait till fall, this is summertime and Pacicific Rim is just ridiculous amounts of fun!! Favorite of this summer!

And thank you GDT for comprehensive action scenes with absolute minimal quick cuts and shaky cam! And constant reference trucks, ppl, helicopters, etc to remind you how gigantic all these things are! So refeshing! the movie knew what it was every step of the way and directed incredibly well!

Epic. Very satisfying.

Pacific Rim was the sole reason I put on hold my own suicide. I'm glad I dig. The movie rocked. Blew me away. Loved it. Now I can get back to killing myself. [link]

It certainly was different enough from your hollow, run-of-the-mill production line action blockbuster. I like how the characters, while archetypical, actually had a little depth to them and were very easy to root for.

PACIFIC RIM has re-defined the boundaries of awesome, Guillermo has taken a B-movie concept and transformed it into a masterpiece of cinema.

I thought it was a huge amount of fun. Clearly not without its flaws, but there's a real joy to much of the film (especially the Hong Kong sequence, holy shit) and the visual effects and overall design of the movie are absolutely amazing. A few friends and I left feeling totally giddy and energized. I'd see it again.

I absolutely loved it. I have been waiting for a mecha film for so long, and while this didn't quite reach the nirvana of mecha I am waiting for, it was a hell of a movie and a hell of a good time. The mecha and monsters were fantastic, detailed, and each was unique to the next. The cinematography on the battles was excellent and the animation was top notch. While I agree the story and characters could have been much much better, what I came to see was monsters fighting robots, and that's

The Hong Kong battle scene is one of the best action scenes I've ever seen. I hope we get a sequel, because I want more!

Super cool!

A rare summer flick that's fun and doesn't take itself too seriously while maintaining an edge of total bad assery. I find it weird how often people confuse the idea of a "brainless movie" with their own personal cynicism. Only go see Pacific Rim if you want a movie that has the joyful throwback feel of an 80's/90's adventure flick with a 200mill budget.

I went in to watch giant warbots fighting huge monsters and wasn't disappointed. I had a blast. If it's not your thing, hey I get it. But I went in for the crazy action and it delivered. I think, for me, it was a lot more than I had hoped for going in. I was looking for mindless action, but I think it had a lot more heart in it than I had anticipated, that made it great to me.

I absolutely loved it. Best movie of the summer easily Man of Steel was alright same with Star Trek Into Darkness. Iron Man 3 pretty disappointing. The scale and sheer scope of this movie was amazing and it was more emotionally engaging than I thought. If you didn't like it good for you I don't care so don't comment I don't want to hear your bullshit.

The middle battle in the film was so amazing. My whole theater broke into applause when it ended and I had a big smile on my face the whole.

It isn't awful, but it's dull - quite the achievement for a film about giant robots fighting giant monsters.

Love del Toro, but Somewhat Disappointed...

I've loved all of del Toro's movies , and was very excited about Pacific Rim, but I was somewhat disappointed. Would give it about a 6 out of 10.
Pluses: The effects were fantastic, Charlie Day and Idris Elba were excellent, and Ron Perlman was great as usual.
Minuses: Did not like Charlie Hunnam or any of the other characters. Hated the stupid 'tough guy' voice by Hunnam. All of the lame, lame stereotyped dialogue was grating.
For people who are saying that it was just a popcorn movie and

For people who are saying that it was just a popcorn movie and you need to turn off your brain, I don't buy it. The original Star Wars trilogy or movies like Jurassic Park are popcorn movies that have characters you actually care about. I thought that would be the type of film Guillermo del Toro would make.
I spent most of the movie wishing that Charlie Day was the star; his scenes were by far the most interesting.
That said, I hope it does well so that del Toro can make more movies without a lot of interference.

I attest again that they revealed too much in the trailers. I also wished they showed more of the other two teams, the Russians and the Chinese. 7-8/10 because it became way too predictable. Like, wayyy way predictable.

Where did the 200 Mil go?

I liked it, 7/10. Nothing special, not bad in the slightest. It did its job I saw it in 2D. I just was wondering where did the 200 Mil go? Actors salaries? Production sets? Surely Industrial Light and Magic doesn't cost that much? Or maybe they do, I don't know. Like other posters have said I would've liked to see battles in broad daylight. It would've been a sight to see. But that's my only question/complaint is this all 200 Mil can buy? Cause if so that fucked up.

2.5/10 Stars

When you sacrifice story for spectacle on this scale, that spectacle better make some visual sense. The writing was at the level of a Saturday morning cartoon written for the 5-8 year old crowd and the SFX were clearly lacking in some way, as evidenced by the fact that all major battles are viewed through the obfuscation of black night skies, torrential downpour and monsters as black as the background.

All in all, a major waste of $200 million.

Seems as though it never stood a chance with you. Not all films have to be neck deep in a thoughtful story. The story is simple, but it serves the purpose for this film. I'm not a del toro but higher but sometimes you just need to enjoy yourself a bit and let it roll.

Saying the fx were lacking is verging on trolling.

I mean it- When you film all your major battles through the haze of a pitch black night and pouring rain with the monsters themselves being black- the action is often difficult to follow and an assault on the senses. It's the opposite of the clarity of action we got in, say, Joss Whedon's The Avengers

dude...what? while i'm no major fan of this movie i had the fun i expected. i thought the FX were great, I had no trouble following the action(I saw it in 2D). I've seen Avengers in both 2D and 3D and lemme say, the green screen was mega-obvious in in both versions, and the scale was f*cked up, especially when the heroes were riding those...dragon worm things. Pacific Rim may have crappier writing and less character than Avengers, but beat the hell out of it visually...

They definitely needed to do one of the fight scenes during a clear sunny day. The night, wet rain thing was overdone and clearly used to try to add drama......in a nutshell it was cliched.

Also, why couldn't the monsters have been different colors? I know what Charlie Day said about the dinosaur link, however why did they have to have regular reptile colored skin? I would've done a red kaiju, a green kaiju, an orange kaiju....and that could have been part of the monster's name.

I too was disappointed by the weak, unemotional story. The tears the actors showed were croc tears that came out of thin air and I felt more sorry for Charlie Day and Ron Perlman than Charlie, Idris or Rinko.

I would give it a 5 or 6 myself. A 2.5 is a bit low but I agree with much of what you're saying here. I found it hard to make out what was happening during the fights. At first I thought it was because I was sitting too close but that wasn't it at all. Too many shots were taken too close to the action so it was a lot of work just trying to figure out what was happening and flip-flopping from inside to outside of the Jaegers only made matters worse. I had much higher expectations so I didn't

Fantastic, and truly EPIC movie

I love films that capture my imagination, especially when the spectacle on the screen is occurring on such a grand scale, that I'm awed by what I see.

Pacific Rim was a film just like that. I thought the characters were great. Special note: Max Martini ( THE UNIT!!! ) was awesome as Herc Hansen. So glad he's becoming more well-known these days. Gritty, yet deep. That's his character.

This film has characters with depth, superficial ones, over-the-top ones ( the scientists - good god, ha ha ), some that were just eye-candy, and I loved it all.

Seeing the Jaegers on screen was awe-inspiring, and so were the Kaiju. Man, I was 14 years old again for two hours ( Del Toro and I are nearly the same age ). I used to play with my shogun warriors when I was a kid and imagined epic adventures like these - the sheer size and intensity of the titans battling it out on screen was so incredible, so jaw-droppingly majestic in scope that I was dumfounded a bit ( doesn't happen too much these days ).

All in all, I say: put aside the fanboy and embrace your inner 14-year old, and go watch this film ready to have a great time and see some amazing sights.

If you go in planning to analyze the characters, the plot, the screenplay, etc - this is the wrong movie for you.

Cheers - G

i thought it accomplished what it set out to do: to bring kaiju/mech films into the 21st century. having said that, most of the acting was pretty bad and there was some really cheesy dialogue. but when you follow that up with a rocket punch to a monster jaw, it is all forgiven.

I enjoyed it, and my wife who took me to see it in IMAX for our 10th Wedding Anniversary enjoyed it more than she expected to, lol.

My only gripe with it is that it's completely set in the dark/rain. I just wish one of those battles was on a nice clear day set on a nice big, open field haha. Other than that though I thought it was great. The pace moved well enough with a great opening, and the story while simple was effective. The action was great and it made a nice change to be able to

I can only imagine the render times with all the water, smoke and rubble hitting the screen in this film.

Overall I'd throw it an 8/10, but ILM really knocked it out the park for me.

I fully expected it to be the film of the summer, and a total blast, but I was severely disappointed. In the end, while still being better than most films in this incredibly lackluster year thus far, it was just okay. I think GTD has proven to be one of the best action directors (Blade II, HB, and HBII have some incredibly unique and wonderfully executed action), but this didn't show it. These fights had so much potential, but I thought said potential was squandered. Most of the movie was

These fights had so much potential, but I thought said potential was squandered. Most of the movie was loooong stretches of exposition with no Jaegers or Kaiju, and the human characters weren't interesting enough to make up for it. And the action scenes themselves didn't last long enough, weren't [link] well enough, and they were hard to see/follow considering all of them took place at night in the pouring rain and/or ocean (at least there wasn't any fucking shaky-cam though). They also cut to the pilots mid-fights, which disrupted the flow of the action. I know what they were trying to do, but the human element is implied, and it came off extremely jarring. I still hope this makes super-duper big bucks, because original (yes, it IS original) films like this and GTD deserve the money. And I think a sequel could greatly improve this awesome concept.

Film of the Summer!

Pacific Rim is easily THE FILM of the summer. Story was great with alot of heart, it was visually striking, the characters were great and had depth, and the actions scenes were expertly directed. The movie was everything and more and made you feel like a kid again in a fun, exciting, intelligent way. I found it much more enjoyable than Iron Man 3, Star Trek 2, and Man of Steel.

I hope it does well this weekend because it deserves it and the fact that I would love to see a sequel or two.

Haven't had this much fun since Star Trek (2009)

The movie was a blast. I haven't been that entertained since J.J. Abrahams first outing with Star Trek. This movie had so many sendups to the classic popcorn flicks, and evoked emotions I haven't had since Independence Day. Some people are complaining about the flat characters, but this movie didn't need character development. It's a "B-Movie" with a BIG BUDGET. It's a movie that knew what it was trying to be, unlike other blockbusters of the past year which tried to be more than what they

I 100% agree that this movie doesn't need character development. So why did PR spend 90% of its runtime having it's characters talk to each other, essentially trying to shove boring, lame, and cliche "character development" down our throats? I wanted 2 hours of robots vs monsters done well. - See more at: [link]sthash.T1tNIISh.dpuf

I think I feel guilty that I'm cheap and won't be seeing this, because I really do hope its the number one movie this weekend

Seriously. The marketing for this film was pretty terrible.
