What did you think of...Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?

12.17.2016

The promise of an annual Star Wars film has so far been fulfilled after the launch of the new trilogy last year with THE FORCE AWAKENS and now the first standalone spinoff, ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY. It's a decent gamble, to a point, but ultimately with the words "star" and "wars" in the title it doesn't take much more than that to get asses in seats. Directed by Gareth Edwards (GODZILLA) and starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Wen Jiang, Riz Ahmed, Forest Whitaker, and Jimmy Smits, the prequel tale of the mission to steal the Death Star plans is being sold as a Star Wars film with an emphasis on "war", while still retaining the familiar qualities of a galaxy far, far away.

The reviews thus far have been resoundingly positive, with RT's aggregated score sitting at 84% (if that kind of stuff matters to you). Chris Bumbray had a blast with the film in his review, giving it a 9/10 and saying that the film is, "A true ensemble in the mold of WW2 adventure classics like THE GUNS OF NAVARONE, ROGUE ONE is grittier fare than you’d expect. People die, and tears are shed. Anyone who thought it would be watered-down should think again."

You can POST YOUR OWN REVIEW of the film in the below strikebacks or on your own Movie Fan Central profile, if you so desire. Naturally, we'd prefer you to comment only if you've seen the film as that's the point here, but do what feels good. Just don't get mad if you get trounced for trolling. Healthy debate, genuine thoughts, and respectful interactions is all we ask. So, let's hear it: Was this the spinoff droid you were looking for or is this series best left to the ongoing story? Loved the visuals, but my god that film was an absolute mess! Story was incoherent & disjointed, characters were lack luster & forgettable, and that shaky camera was over the top and not needed in many scenes. James Earl Jones phoned it in as Darth Vader, really disappointed. Worse cannon Star Wars film since Attack of the Clones.

Good, not great

This is coming from a huge Star Wars fan. First with the positives. Overall I liked the story and how it connected to A New Hope and the broader Star Wars universe. Visually it was great, Felicity Jones was enjoyable as Jyn Erso, and the last 20-30 mins was fun, especially Vader's hallway scene (one of the best Star Wars scenes in any of the movies). But, I missed having a John Williams score, the dialogue was just ok (particularly a line by Vader that was weird), the absence of the opening

Think they could have been more creative with that. Also, there were several throw-away characters that I didn't care much about. Overall the first half was a bit too muddy. All in all, a fun sci-fi movie set in the Star Wars universe. 7/10.

One of the Best Star Wars movie

Rogue One is one of the best Star wars movie since Empire strikes Back. Its awesome movie. Its more of a war movie style like Guns of Navarone, Dirty Dozen. Not only it has the best space battle scenes but they made Darth Vader terryfing and badass.

Apparently

even Asians in other galaxies know Kung-foo. Overall the film was boring as hell, saved ultimately from being a total train wreck by a decent final act. The characters lacked chemistry, motivation and emotion. I have no idea what most of their names even were. Jones' character was the only one who actually had a reason to be there, and even her motivation was 1 dimensional at best. And as for everyone shouting about how Star Wars doesn't need Jedi and Lightsabers to be interesting, literally

I was bored by the third blaster-gun-fight scene, let alone the eighth one.

Like you seem so desperate to establish Rob Kong, it is just a movie, so, again, not sure why you're so invested in the entirely valid opinions of strangers. You probably shouldn't be taking all of this so, clearly, personally.

Loved it! This is The Dark Knight of the modern Star Wars films!

Even though I enjoyed The Force Awakens, it felt too much like a sitcom to me. I could almost hear the laugh track whenever Finn made jokes using out of place modern slang.

Rogue One felt like a real film. The acting was fantastic, the characters were believable, and story was engaging. It put me on the edge of my seat (I found myself caring for these characters that much!), which is far more than I can say for any other action film this year.

Enjoyable, but underwhelming. A lot of characters are underutilized and the film takes too long to get going, imo. TFA had an energy to it that made it feel engaging, frentic, and non-stop. This felt like an engine that was revving up to get somewhere. I did enjoy the darker nature of it, but I wish they had utilized characters more (not enough Donnie Yen kicking ass!). I also wish they would have cut out some of the excess. Most of the scenes involving the empire baddies felt kind of

I like him as much as the next guy, but he was in the film as little more than fan service (although, his scene at the end is probably one of the greatest Darth Vader has ever had). Overall, there are certain things I liked about it better than TFA, but I did not enjoy it as much as that movie. Gotta hand it to Gareth Edwards though, the guy is a great filmmaker and handled his turn in the Star Wars franchise very well.

It was a fun film, with great characters and action scenes. Also loved the ending. But the film is certainly not perfect. Would give it a 7. It could have been 30 minutes shorter, because it dragged a bit at some points, especially in the first half. And the CGI that's used for certain characters is very distracting.

Meh

This movie felt like one big missed opportunity to me. It certainly had some good character moments (I loved Chirrut and Baze--I wish there had been more with them) and some amazing action sequences, but it had a "Blair Witch ending" in my opinion. Just when the movie kicks into overdrive...BAM...it ends. I'm just not sure what to think of it. I felt the same way after seeing The Force Awakens for the first time, but it grew on me with a second viewing. So here's hoping the same happens with

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Kal's Review #RogueOne

Pros: Impeccable cinematography, beautiful digital imagery, great cast, amazing performances, intricate action sequences, interesting story weaving, intricate script, rich characters, creatively fresh musical score, grand set pieces, new vibe and expansion of the lore universe like never before, well used easter eggs and cameos.

Cons: pacing issues earlier on, some lost opportunities at character development, return of some cheesy

Cons: pacing issues earlier on, some lost opportunities at character development, return of some cheesy nonsensical flaws that have plagued the series from the start, some CGI failings that could have best been used sparingly for better effect.

The Sum Up: The Force is strong with this one!

Final Verdict - 8.5/10

Really enjoyed it, as I mostly enjoy anything Star Wars, but they did some great work with this one to help it stand apart a bit. I just have to get this out of the way first, that last scene with Vader was brilliant! They didn't have to do it, but I'm so glad they did. I think there were more Easter eggs here than TFA, which made it really fun to try and point out every reference or cameo. I didn't have a problem with the CGI composites of certain characters because I honestly think dodging

Also, loved the handling of the title. Keeping "A long time ago..." was a good idea.

Boring

That second act was flat-out boring. Darth Vader was great. I did not like the characters and really feel like they missed an opportunity to do more with the father-daughter dynamic, whether it was showing more of what the father was doing with the Empire, etc., or something but Felicity Jones was surprisingly underwhelming. So bland.

Great action scenes, but I didn't feel a connection with any characters outside of the blind man and his partner. B- or C+.

I totally agree about not connecting with a lot of the characters. It seemed like the first and third acts wanted to be an ensemble movie but the middle was just the Jyn Erso show. I really didn't care that much when everybody died.

There are few movies that are worth the price of another ticket.

This one is among those few. It must be seen of the big screen. I watched it in 3D - an absolutely epic experience and I can't wait to watch it again. A true war film with no real happy end, and my third favorite SW movie after the first 2 films of the original trilogy. Just.... WOW.

I absolutely hated TFA because of how safe it played. It felt like Disney's Star Wars through and through, fan service all around with no personal vision behind. Rogue One though, this is a story someone really wanted to tell. Even though we all know the Rebels will ultimately succeed (it is a direct prequel to episode IV after all), what's important is the how. We feel the characters' motivations, we feel their sacrifices and we feel the danger when all hell breaks loose. A reminder that Star

I have my fair share of gripes with the film, but overall it was a fun watch, and a nice entry into the series. At the very least I'm confident the rest of these "Star Wars Stories" will be handled well. And that last Vader scene...give me a whole movie of that!

6/10 -Another movie where parts from trailer are missing

I think a lot of people who like this movie were overly critical on TFA. Now since the first movie is out the way (TFA) they can sit back, relax, and enjoy the next film which is Rogue One. Only problem now they're too open because of how harsh they were on the last one. Let me first say before talking bad about the movie, I think the last 30 min of this movie was amazing. I loved how the danger became real, how amazing the cinematography was, loved how this mission just seem so impossible but

I loved how the danger became real, how amazing the cinematography was, loved how this mission just seem so impossible but they were determined through sheer will to succeed. I loved the battles, loved Vader, and I cheered when (..spoiler..) Leia appeared. ..Having said that, it doesn't make up for the first 1hr an 20 min of this movie. The acting wasn't good in the beginning except for Diego. But it doesn't take much to act like a hardass/jerk. Felicity started off shaky, her acting seemed off but got better with the movie. I love Forest Whitaker but his acting was off and a bit over the top. Which brings me to his character being under used. He had less time than Vader, they could have picked any random actor to play the role of such an expendable character. Going back to Felicity her character didnt have much development. I know she is a girl that lost both her parents, but who is she now? I guess showing her in prison explains everything about her? Donnie Yen's character was too campy, this is coming from a fan of his, but the force devotion became annoying. He was basically a one dimensional character. K2SO could calculate probability but became so stumped when it came to improvising a lie to save lives. He was funny though, I liked the "I got a bad feeling about this" line. As for the story, from beginning until Jyn had to convince everyone about the flaw, it wasn't very engaging (excluding the sequence when she was a girl). The rest and middle felt like filler until it was time to get the plans. Like they could have just had all these characters be part of the resistance already and focused more on the main mission. But they decided to fill the movie with how strangers met each other. in conclusion.. great third act but acts one and two needed work.

I kept looking for the scene at the end from the trailer when the TIE Fighter flies up to Jyn on the ledge by the data tower and she walks straight at it with her blaster. It never happened. That was visually a really cool shot from the trailer.

JackNapier yeah I was really looking forward to that scene. That scene solidified my desire to see the movie. I was wondering how she would get out of that situation or maybe it was someone picking her up to help her escape. I never found out of course because it wasn't in the movie. I also wanted to see what Saw's lecture to Jyn was about, the one where he finishes with, "If you continue to fight... what will you become." That wasn't in there, which further let me down. Hell they didnt even

Goldenarmz, I know its not unique to Star Wars, hence "Another movie." And no all movies don't do this. Its not common but it is becoming a trend that needs to stop. I'm expecting to see one thing but get something different. I pay for what I'm expecting to see from the trailer.

So you didn't like the film because you wanted it to be the trailer? Well that's moronic at best. "Whaaaaaa I came to see a trailer in loop not some 2 hour film with all this story" How about you skip the trailers altogether and just see the film, maybe then the creative filmmaking decisions that the director and editors make on their film won't cause so much butthurt? You sound like an ignorant spoiled child

Incredible movie. Pretty dark material so I understand why they needed reshoots to keep it a little bit light

Absolutely loved Rogue One. It was better than The Force Awakens for me because it felt more original and it had darker material. The only downside to the whole movie was the distracting CG Tarkin. He looked like a video game character or a cartoon. That was hard to stomach for a while, but the movie is so good otherwise that I dealt with it. As for the reshoots, its clear how this movie could have been really dark and somber so I imagine they enhanced the mood quite a bit with those shoots.

Very enjoyable Star Wars story

Rogue One is a fun adventure film, a bit like The Guns of Navarone. The diverse cast of newcomers were interesting, though it got a little hard to keep up with everyone's names. I particularly enjoyed the third act, with a creatively staged space battle. The film makes sparing though very effective use of Darth Vader. By all means I give it a solid recommendation.

Was fortunate enough to see it in IMAX.

First of all, Dunkirk looks better than I was anticipating.

As for Rogue One, there were some minor qualms that I had with it, but nothing to detract from my overall enjoyment of the film. The CG Tarkin threw me a little at first, but I adjusted quickly and it honestly looks pretty damn impressive. The last 30-40 minutes of the film are worth it for sure. Lots of cool little throwbacks.

Bottom line: I'd go see it again, and I can't wait for more

Rogue One > Force Awakens

Wow this movie was surprisingly amazing! This film is a great action adventure war movie that blended beautifully with the Star Wars universe.

Ready to watch A New Hope!

Rogue One is good, not great. But those last two minutes sure we're great. Gareth Edwards did a very solid job.

Mixed feelings

I liked it. It was pretty well acted and a decent story.

Cons - It was a bit of a Jedi rehash, small team invades enemy held planet in stolen imperial ship, plants bombs, force field around the planet, etc. Yet another Death Star story. Hopefully the last. K2 a bit too mouthy, characters not very memorable. dialogue a bit flat, Tarkin's voice could have been better, why was the death star upside down when attacking Jedah?

Pros- Great bad guy, definitely what General Hux should have been;

Pros- Great bad guy, definitely what General Hux should have been; generally decent acting, a bit more realistic combat where storm troopers hit the ground taking cover, Tarkin was visually very well done, as was young Leia; new species, new ships, more planets shown than all previous movies, giving a better scale of the empires reach, costume design. Consistent design in ships, Imperial facilities.

It's in space, there is no up or down. It just arrived this way and looks upside down to the people on this side of the planet. More problematic to me is how close it is to the planet. The gravity of such a large object would affect a planet's orbit and magnetic field, thus creating tides as big as tsunamis, seismic waves and other disasters. No need for a laser beam to come out of it!

It was ok. There isn't really any scene that I'd like to watch again, everything was a bit flat and clumsy. Lots of story flaws too (he had Krennic in his sniper's scope and didn't think of shooting him!?). The blind ninja felt really out of place for a Star Wars movie. The music was unmemorable and Tarkin and Leia's CGI was unnecessary. Their reflection in a glass or a shot of their backs would have been more than enough. Still a fun 2 hours but not something I'd watch again.

Was Cushing's CG resurrection done tastefully?

Haven't seen it yet but I am really worried this will start a trend of bringing back long gone actors.

No. He was a full on character, not a cameo. I highly anticipate Paul Walker will return for Fast and Furious sequels. I really wish they regulated him to a hologram cameo or kept him in the shadows. Vader wears a mask. You can get away with that

Cushing was well done, except the voice was weak. My friend turned to me and said '"I thought he was dead'". It has come a long way from ROTS.

I was hoping Wayne Pygram from Farscape, whom also played Tarkin in ROTS, would reprise the role with CGI enhancements. There were moments when Tarkins voice sounded like Pygram but it wasn't him for sure.

Enjoyed it

Loved Mads of course.

Loved the story. Loved the music.

Hated Vader's first cameo. James Earl Jones just doesn't sound like he used to and that choke pun...

Hated CGI Tarkin. Uncanny valley. The lip movements were too much... Humans don't move their lips that much when they talk. Cushing didn't for sure. I wish he was shown less...more reflections, shadows...holograms. Alan Tudyk stole the movie.

Agree with you on Tarkin (and another major OT character). Wish they had portrayed differently rather than having it thrown right in our face. Having Tarkin be a presence through holograms and then he shows up a little bit at the end would have worked better for me rather than being such a central presence throughout.

The other cameo looked better cause it was a quick shot they probably spent a lot of time rendering, but it was a very jarring thing to see right before the end credits

Also didn't like the cameos of Red Leader and Gold Leader. They clearly looked like they came from a 70s film and most of their dialogue when they were on screen was their dialogue from A New Hope. It was distracting to know they just added a different background to the same footage. Also Red 5 getting shot down was too much winking at the audience.

Would actually disagree on the X-Wing pilots. I thought that was a much better example of repurposing old characters than Tarkin. Also I didn't mind the Red 5 wink.

Best acted of all the Star Wars

It was intense, it was emotional, it had characters you care about and were brought to life extremely well, without any cheese. Well written, excellent action and effects. And that ending was so awesome, it connects so well with Episode IV! Didn't love digital Cushing, but it could have been worse! A minor hiccup in an otherwise awesome Star Wars film, far superior to the Force Awakens.

First the good.
This is by far the most visually sophisticated Star Wars movie ever. So many incredible shots. So much attention to visual detail. It can not be stressed enough how visually stunning this is.

It's a good movie, rough around the edges, my only real major complaint is the digital Princess Lei. Unnecessary and for a movie so amazing visually, it is a truly jarring moment. The technology for such things is not there yet, do it would have been better to either not show her, or

The technology for such things is not there yet, do it would have been better to either not show her, or do it in a more tried and true way where it was implied instead of expressed in a digital non convincing way.

A good movie, not a great movie. I would put in on par with TFA.

Great!

Really enjoyed it. The first act was a little shaky, but man those characters, especially K-2S0 and Donnie Yen's Chirrut ruled. I was really impressed at how emotional the final act was, which was AWESOME.

Really my only big problem was CGI Tarkin. It just didn't work. Why go to all that trouble to resurrect Peter Cushing when you could've just done Thrawn and referenced the Rebels cartoon?

Because this movie immediately precedes A New Hope, and Tarkin was the commander of the Death Star, not thrawn. I didn't find it half as jarring I guess. I understood the necessity for both CGI figures, and Leia's was kept short enough that I completely accepted it.

Considering this movie was invented for a seemingly simple purpose, it still turned out great. Follow me: consider the cameos. Early on it was bail organa and mon mothma. The connective tissue to episodes 1-3. And at the end we see the ship and its denizens that will open episode 4. So this movie clearly served to link the iconography of the original Lucas films, including the most sensible portions of Lucas awful prequel trilogy, to both those original films and to the new visual styles and storytelling of this new Disney sponsored universe. Now those old players have been brought up to date, visually, with this current Star Wars tone and vision, and allows the viewers to really let it sink that these stories are all related. It also reminds us that no matter how much we may have felt betrayed by Lucas' vision for ep. 1-3, we must still accept it is as cannon.

What intrigued me is that they did this very simple thing effectively and made it entertaining. I really enjoyed the action scenes in this movie. I enjoyed Jyn's character. And I certainly didn't mind the way it ended for them. It kind of had to didn't it? If they and the fleet had completely succeeded there would not have been a reason for leia to have to send it on with her droids. All in all this was an excellent entry into the series and I very much so look forward to witnessing Han's filching on the loan from Jabba.

Loved the 3rd act. I loved all the cameos. K-2SO was probably my favorite character. The last scene with you-know-who was just epic.

Its Good, 7.5 for me

in my opinion the script is not very amazing, but the 3rd act is very good. Some Characters are underdeveloped, the music is not the best work os this composer, but this movie had great moments.
casual movie goers may find it confusing.

First of all, my comments will be a spoiler so all of you puny fanboys go elsewhere because this movie suck major ass. I hate movies where all the characters died at the end. I mean all of the movie came down to Darth Vader destroying their planet (scarif) with the Death Star and that's it. All the actions and story line for nothing. Movie is a pile of dung. How do you Lil off Jyn and Cassian????! Another thing I hate is that there won't be a sequel to this because it leads up to a new hope.

Really enjoyed it. Characters were all very cool and interesting without there being a ton of back story. Acting was great which it seemed like everyone complained about when they saw the trailer. Action was top notch as well as CGI. *Spoiler* Hated to see Mads go so soon, well pretty much like everyone. Ben Mendelssohn was awesome but thought he went out in rather lame fashion. Reminded me of how Tom Hardy goes out in TDKR. Last gripe would be, other than the last two minutes of the film,

All that being said, I think it was a better story than TFA, but not quite as holy shit satisfying if that makes any sense. Great addition to the Star Wars Universe.

Loved it!

I'd say it's the most Star Wars-esque movie since Empire, and this is coming from someone who absolutely loved The Force Awakens. It adds layers to the mythology of the old movies in such a seamless way. My only gripes are Forest Whitaker's acting which is always dialed to 11 for no damn reason, and the CGI faces of some old characters. Extraordinary work, and you would never be able to tell in still photographs, but you can still tell they're CGI in these live-action scenes which took me out

Absolutely loved it, was really refreshing to have a SW story outside of the main saga that wasn't focussed on the skywalker legacy. Found it quite emotional in places and it really leant a lot of depth to the people of the rebellions struggle. And for a story where we knew they would succeed to steal the plans from the start, there were enough surprises to keep you guessing. A really strong third act, incredible action. Only gripe for me is the CG tarkin, while it's really well done, it's

It was amazing for uber fans. Sooooo many Easter eggs, some really nicely put in with an extremely subtle touch, some almost laughably gratuitous. The characters don't have quite the presence or charm as the saga films, I won't be banging down doors for a "Rogue Two" but I'm glad they showed us this part of the story and remarkably didn't paint themselves into a corner when connecting the dots to ep IV. They could have created a lot of new plot holes but succeeded in just adding a bit more to

I think the biggest challenge for Rogue Two would be the fact that every major character from this movie ended up dead.

Great

It was really great and would give it 8.5/10. Great actors all around, was entertained all the way through and liked how itīs geared more towards adults with the feeling of a war movie (In Sweden you actually have to be 15 years old to see it) but of course still very much Star Wars. And the action really is awesome. Not much Vader but when you see him heīs so great (especially his last scene).
