What did you think of...Spectre?

11.06.2015

After the massive success of the last Bond outing, 2012's SKYFALL, it became clear that whoever took over for the 24th film in the series would have their work cut out for them. Incidentally, it was the same creative team of Sam Mendes, John Logan, Neal Purvis, and Robert Wade (and new addition Jez Butterworth), along with returning cast members Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, and Ben Whishaw that re-entered the fray with SPECTRE, the latest 007 adventure to hit the big screen. Adding in Christoph Waltz and Dave Bautista as the baddies and Monica Bellucci and Lea Sedoux as the Bond girls, SPECTRE is in the spotlight to deliver something at least on par with SKYFALL's refined reputation. The question is, can it be done?

Not everyone thinks SKYFALL was a masterpiece, but it still stands as the most successful of the series and ultimately made good on the things we tend to expect from our 007 films. SPECTRE, which pulls from some of Bond's older history, looks like it's on the right track for more of the same, but the reviews so far have been a mixed bag. Our own Chris Bumbray, a serious Bond geek, gave it an 8/10, saying the film is "While far from perfect, SPECTRE is still an excellent action film, and despite not quite measuring up to SKYFALL, a very strong Bond outing." That's a better perspective than others have had and it seems that fans could go in either direction with this new installment.

Check out all the trailers, featurettes, and clips of SPECTRE by clicking the image below!

Now, we want to hear what YOU thought of the film! You can POST YOUR OWN REVIEW of the film in the below strikebacks or on your own Movie Fan Central profile. Is this a fitting entry in the series or did SKYFALL set the bar too high?

Meh

On the negative side: Overlong. Great choice for the villain and then give him no meat to chew on. Craig seems to be going through the motions at this point. Taking down a moving helicopter...from a moving boat...with a Walther PPK.
On the positive side: A couple of good action scenes. Voldemort. And Drax (need to see this henchman again...reminded me of Jaws from The Spy Who Loved Me...and that's a good thing.)

I loved it

I went in apprehensive but thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the score was great but didn't really care for the theme song this time.

Lots of great action and that opening sequence was a blast!

Not as bad as Quantum, but almost

Quantum of Solace remains Craig's worst Bond film for the simple fact it lacked anything memorable from its forgettable villain, terrible duet theme, and poor pacing, it will always be seen as an all around bad film. SPECTRE at least had style and great action. However, Waltz is wasted, not because of the buildup of his character (although, that is a problem) but his motivations seem completely ridiculous and his connection with Silva (one of Bond's best villains) seems completely forced in

Lets not forget Andrew Scott's horribly written "C". Despite all of this, the biggest criticism goes to the forced love story between Bond and Swann. I hope if Craig returns for another film that Swann is killed right at the beginning of the film by Blofeld or by one of his henchman just to end that story completely.

Excellent up until they got to the desert base. Up until then they had been able to homage previous Bond films while surpassing them. After that it felt formulaic and bland. The worst part was how they took what I was looking forward to most (Christoph Waltz playing freaking Blowfeld) and made it the worst part of the film. I know these writers are not Tarantino but there's no excuse for taking one of the worlds greatest actors and giving him a character that bland.

The relationships

The relationships between the classic characters were fun but it did seem a bit ridiculous that there were only three other loyal people in MI6. Moriarty was also welcome but the evil plan was stolen from the last Captain America. I was glad Blowfeld wasn't killed because he can return in future (hopefully better) installments. However he should have just escaped period. Bond shooting a helicopter out of the air was ridiculous (could they at least have had him do it with a bigger gun?

Controversial opinion time: Skyfall is the worst of Craig's Bond films. (I know, I know; bring on the thumbs-downs.) I thought Spectre was loads better. It continued the tone of this new era of Bond movies will slowly reintroducing more of the gadgets, wisecracks, intimidating henchmen, and cat-stroking villains that most people expect from the franchise. I would rank the four Craig films as Casino Royale > Spectre > Quantum Of Solace > Skyfall

Good not great..

I liked Spectre but didn't love it. The action sequences were uninspired, but Craig is a good bond. Very predictable, 6 out of 10

A Great Addition to Craig's Bond

I thought this was a great story, and any long time Bond fans will get a huge kick out of it. For me, it was the story that stole the show in Spectre. Craig's Bond franchise has been tiptoeing around this plot since Casino, and it has finally come, and they did a pretty good job introducing it.. If nothing else, thats what Spectre is, an introduction, so I'm really hoping we get one more movie from Craig to properly finish his story. It is not without it's problems, like a hard to believe

In a word: Underwhelming.

It has a fantastic opening sequence, but everything just goes downhill from there. The dialogue and supporting cast lacks that certain snappiness from previous installments. It's also way too long, a lot of it feels like filler material. Lea Seydoux is frankly not that hot, and she has zero chemistry with Daniel Craig. The villain's "reveal" felt completely arbitrary. This is also probably the first Bond movie with a story that relies heavily on having seen the previous films.

About an hour too long tbh. Had a great start, then a very slow middle and a pretty dull and unimaginative ending. 6/10. Nice to see Moriarty up to his pesky trouble making again though ;)

Just saw it...awesome fight scenes....Bautista was great but shouldve seen more screen time ...really great action scenes ...very fast paced and didnt seem like 2.5 hrs...Lea Sedoux omg what a thick delicious ass...and lots of straight on shots of it...not the best bond but definitely very entertaining and well worth a ticket price...8/10

I'm not a die-hard Bond fan like some here (though I have seen the majority of Bond films), but I really enjoyed it. In terms of Craig's films, I would place it way above Solace, just above Royale, but below Skyfall. 8/10.

luke319, I feel like Skyfall and Spectre have that perfect mix of 'classic' Bond tone with a modern touch, and Craig as Bond seems more established in the role in these last two films as opposed to Solace and Royale. Plus I thought Solace was a bit messy story-wise, some of that having to do with the issues surrounding the script. But I don't hate Solace, it's still a good film.

Holy hell, such a waste of talent

You have THREE people in this who have proven to be amazing villains in the past. Somehow they were all underutilized and BORING. There wasn't a good Bond villain in this movie. Waltz was hardly around, his "twist" was bullshit because it literally meant nothing. It was basically a NOD to the original character. It pisses me off more than the Mandarin twist.

Liked it Better than Solace, No Where Near Skyfall or Royale

It wasn't as bad as some of the negative reviews were saying, but wasn't as awesome as Skyfall. I suppose after the last movie did so well critically, financially, and fan wise, the only way for this one to go was down. There were some things that were fantastic (I thought this cold open was the best of the Craig Bond films), but it felt too long, and Bautista's character could've been any giant hulking henchman.

And that title sequence....how did no one pull Sam Mendes aside and show him

Solace wasn't good, but there are several (bad) reasons behind it sucking. It was written during the writers strike of '07. Three different writers had to work on different parts of the script at different times or they would be cut loose from the writers guild. So one guy wrote like the first half of act 1 and act 2, the second guy wrote the first half of act 3 and the second half of act 1 and the third guy finished the remain halfs of the other acts. It was also rushed because if they didn't

This movie had NO excuse for being as bland as it was...

Overall, Quantum's actually gotten better reviews than this one (65% on RT vs. 62%) and MechaKacho's right, that movie had some serious obstacles to overcome this one really doesn't have an excuse. It's like Mendes seriously just returned to cash a paycheck, which I guess is understandable, but still disappointing.

Wanted it to be good but came off very pedestrian

Wanted to like it I really did but it felt off. The romance felt forced there was zero chemistry (there seemed more chemistry with belluccii)and it wavered dangerously close to brosnan style bond with eye rolling moments (hitting a moving helicopter with a pistol whilst in a speedboat, plane vs car chase, gate crashing a high level crime meeting simply by turning up and waving a ring to name but a few). Whats worse with a little effort those could have been explained or There were good moment

I was actually pretty disappointed. The acting was great, but the story was eye roll inducing and even the action was so lackluster. Besides a few great moments, including that fantastic opening, it was all boring, been there done that action. The car chase wasn't the least bit exciting, even if it was humorous, the chase down the snow was boring, and most of the third act wasn't interesting at all. There were so many eye rolling moments in the story, especially at the end, I couldn't help but check out a good way through the third act. They tried too hard to connect everything to Bond on a personal level, but unlike Skyfall where it actually felt personal and emotional, here it just felt forced and disconnected. Yes, it harkened back to classic Bond, but maybe that was the problem. It was TOO much like classic Bond, and in that sense, nothing felt fresh or exciting. It had moments in between, but overall, it just wasn't that entertaining of a watch. I actually enjoyed the Peanuts movie more than I enjoyed Spectre.

Yeah... In fact I feel like Silva was posthumously undermimed to be a henchman following Blofeld's orders instead of his own personal vendetta in Skyfall.

That might have been my biggest complaint. Connery era Bond brought out an awkward performance from Craig. His seduction of Monica Belucci was downright awkward and borderline rapey because Craig looked somewhat apologetic and self aware of his forcefulness. Whereas Connery would've sold it. Craig just didn't seem himself anymore... I went back to watching Quantum a movie I despised, but now I see Craig comfortable in his skin again, just like in Casino Royale.

Also David Arnold needs to

That was absolutely my biggest complaint. Casino Royale and Skyfall were miles ahead of your typical Connery era Bond flick so it felt like taking a big step back to regress to that.I felt like they were way more concerned with paying lip service to the earlier films in the series and eking out as much nostalgia as possible than actually telling a worthwhile story.

Not the worst bond movie I've ever seen, but the most disappointed I've ever been by one

My biggest issue was that overall, the film felt like a complete recycle of Quantum of Solace. Bond gets in big trouble for being "out of line," has to work without the sanction of MI-6, tracks down a girl whose family was killed by the leader of a shadowy organization that is so scary that it's penetrated MI-6 right under their noses, discovers their secret desert compound... these elements have been done ad nauseam over the past three Craig films. So the plot didn't do much for me and this

So the plot didn't do much for me and this and to a lesser extent Skyall seemed like they were more concerned about capturing the feel of Bond nostalgia than Casino Royale level writing and acting. For that reason, I actually love Quantum of Solace a lot, it didn't feel like a Bond flick at all, but it was better from a writing, acting and (less so) directing standpoint than 90% of the rest of the series. I also, personally, liked the added sense of realism although that seems to be many people's chief complaint.

I enjoyed it and thought it was definitely the most 'fun' we have seen Craig play Bond in one of his films. But Casino Royale, in my opinion is still the best Bond film of the Craig era. Definitely worth the wait and hype that was created from Skyfall.

It was okay

Everything was there for the movie to be great, but something was lacking. I think that was Daniel Craig. Now, before you dismiss me all together, let me explain. Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace were done in an effort to reinvent Bond, modernize him, if you will. Through those two movies, I was a huge, HUGE, Craig fan. He was a great fit for the persona that those movies required. However, Mendes decided to take Bond back to the Connery era with Skyfall and Spectre. This required a more

He was a great fit for the persona that those movies required. However, Mendes decided to take Bond back to the Connery era with Skyfall and Spectre. This required a more suave, gentleman, spy, than the ruthless assassin of the two previous Craig movies. Everything feels Bond in Spectre, but Craig.

I also think Mendes showed his weakness as an action director. I counted two stellar action scenes in a movie that was full of them. They mostly felt uninspired, and just down-right dull at times. There wasn't enough tension built into them to warrant sitting on the edge of your seat. If Mendes had spent less time on paying homage to the great set pieces in Bond history, this could have been an area he focused on.

Maybe to the average movie goer this movie is an 8 or 9, but as a Bond guy it left me wanting. 6/10

I was very underwhelmed. The music wasn't exciting... The movie was long. The story was all over place. They used the same plot device with the main character and arch nemesis being raised as brothers as freaking Austin Powers 3. I have been in a bad mood about this all day. This movie should've been a 8/10 and it's more of a 5/10.

Also "I love you James" two scenes later "I can't do this anymore"

Daniel Craig's awkward reaction "um...what?" Is exactly how I felt too.

yeah, i did not like how Oberhauser tied back to Bond. it was lame. if anything, i would have preferred that he was instead related to (Judi Dench's) M. maybe that was her secret. her rise to power in the MI6 is what drove her brother to lead the bad guys. and either her last message or the new Orwellian Government uncovers it. so Bond goes on a mission to redeem her or clear her name.

i loved the idea of Waltz as Blofeld, and want to see more of that in a better way. ideally, SPECTRE would

i loved the idea of Waltz as Blofeld, and want to see more of that in a better way. ideally, SPECTRE would have been two movies. this one where Bond comes out of nowhere and throws a wrench in his evil plan. then the second one where he escapes and targets Bond specifically.

as far as "I love you James" two scenes later "I can't do this anymore"...

she loves Bond enough to let him go. right? she loves him, but doesn't want to change him, so she gives him an out. in the end, he loves her enough to change. thus, ending his career as 007.

To me it felt more like a clunky "we got M, Q, Bond, Tanner and Moneypenny all together... Oh wait... What do we do about Madeline?" "Write her out"

There was absolutely no real romance between them. Not anything like Bond and Vesper.

Also can we finally have a movie where Bond is actually going on a mission assigned to him by MI6 again? Enough of this rogue agent stuff

a sendoff of Daniel Craig for the Bond fans

people say it was cheesy, and i agree that it wasn't perfect (why did they have to be related?!). but it ran like a checklist of things long-time Bond fans have been waiting for Craig to do and ends at a good reboot point. the Craig Bond films have been a slow burn leading up to SPECTRE. Casino Royale was great, but it wasn't the Bond we all knew. QoS just sucked, and tried too hard to be James Bourne. Skyfall was good again, but it wasn't a James Bond movie. it was James Bond in the Dark

IMO, SPECTRE felt the most like a "classic Bond movie" (cheesiness and all). and as a long-time Bond fan, i appreciated that. i was smiling, like "ah ok, i see what you did there". SPECTRE didn't take itself as seriously as Skyfall did, but kept some of that in tact. unfortunately that created an awkward clash at times. i guess it could have been better if they just stayed Skyfall-serious the whole time, but then it might not have felt like a "classic Bond movie". i guess as a long-time fan, the blemishes in SPECTRE were charming to me, but i can see why others might not like it.

i give it 8/10.

his 2/10 means he can't because it isn't a 2/10 movie. The Room or something of that kind is a 2/10 movie (2 points for how entertainingly bad it is) So he can't actually have seen many movies if this is a 2/10 for him.

The movie was so bad it doesn't need an elaboration. I'd say on the level of Die Another Day, '98 Godzilla kinda bad

Sounds like someone jumped on the hate train and has no idea why.
