What did you think of...Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

Aug. 9, 2014by: Paul Shirey

After all the controversy leading up to the new TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, the flick is finally here and ready to unleash on audiences. Diehard fans of the characters have been split on the new adaptation's prospects and it will surely appease and anger both camps upon seeing the finished version. Produced by Michael Bay and directed by Jonathan Liebesman, the flick stars Megan Fox, William Fichtner, Will Arnett, and Whoopi Goldberg, as well as the voices of Johnny Knoxville and Tony Shalhoub. Reviews are pretty stale so far, with our own JimmyO giving it a 6/10 in his video review and Chris Bumbray giving it a 5/10. It could easily be one of those films that fills that "guilty pleasure" void or perhaps one that let's nostalgia win over the defects, but it's definitely not looking like a slam dunk. You can check out all the trailers, clips, featurettes and more from the film by clicking the image below!

Now that you've seen the latest incarnation of the Heroes in a Half-Shell for yourself, we want to hear what YOU thought of it! You can POST YOUR OWN REVIEW of the film in the below strikebacks or on your own Movie Fan Central profile. Did they capture the spirit of the Turtles you've grown up with or is this another case of childhood nostalgia ruined? We'll continue to update the RT and MFC scores throughout the weekend!

Rotten Tomatoes: 87 reviews, avg score: 20%
Movie Fan Central: 3 reviews, avg score: 6.0/10

And, speaking of Megan Fox...

And, take a trip back in time with the Turtles in our tribute video!

It was good not great but good. I have more than 3 brain cells. I'm not a knuckle-dragging Neanderthal. I am a fairly intelligent person and I enjoyed most of it. I watched the original with my 6 year old son who loves the turtles just as much as I did a week before we saw the new one and he said he loved both movies the same. I think a lot of people on this site are majorly up their own ass when it comes to the way they express their opinions on certain flicks. So as a person who just loves

It reminded me of how much I miss Jim Henson's work

How is it possible that with today's beautiful, magical, and endless possibilities through the development of CGI that these CGI turtles look awful as compared to Jim Henson's wonderful and still amazing Turtle creations. I get it this is a movie made to sell toys, but at least the original movie had creative talent in it's design.

I think youngsters will love it, so mission accomplished. Guaranteed though in 25 years when they're grown up and it's being remade again, they'll talk about it like it's a classic, and say the new one is raping their childhood. Oh, guaranteed:-)

It's actually not that bad. However, it's not the TMNT from my childhood. Nevertheless, it gives TMNT a fresh start for new audiences. The running time is good and concise, unlike Transformers 4 that's about 30 minutes too long. The snow slope chase scene was very well done. Megan Fox was surprisingly okay as April O'Neil. Got to love Will Arnett as Vernon. Overall, it was actually not bad.

I swear, most people on this site only went to see this movie so they could be specific while flaming it lol. This movie never stood a chance with the fan boys. Well I just got back from seeing, and while it wasn't as good as I'd hoped, it was still a good time, it delivered what I wanted. Sick fight scenes (anyone who hates on splinters fight scene doesn't like movies, period.) Slick cgi, and some good laughs! That's all I wanted. I also agree that Tony Shalubs voice was wrong for splinter, but the turtles were spot on, although Donnie was a bit too "geek", as a whole it worked though. I'm happy to be getting a sequel, the origin story was a little meh, I'm glad its out of the way. I'll give it a 7/10 and I look forward to the next one!

Your profile name alone nulls everything you say about movies. You aren't a movie fan, you are a wrestling fan. You like all of that fake crap and that is probably why you thought the CGI looked good.

This movie sucked, unless you have 3 brain cells. Kids didn't even like this movie... That says something. When the target audience hates this movie as much as everyone else. The movie only made money because parents brought their kids. Nobody left happy.

God aweful

I went in with low expectations and it managed to be worse. April is supposed to be confident and intelligent, Fox was just some dumb bimbo who worked at the news station. Her lines were so bad, both written and delivery. I'm gonna say she's front runner for the Razzy. The origin story was so terribly thought out, it was painful. Everyone learning martial arts from a hand book, give me a break. A master martial artist like Shredder using a clunky robotic suit with a ridiculous amount of blades

Not a single character was developed... at all. I didn't care about anyone. Anyone who says "that's just how turtles are" should go back and watch the first turtles film, it still holds up as a great movie period. I really can't emphasis how terrible this was. My younger friend enjoyed it just because he was watching my face cringe. I took it personally, I love those turtles. I kinda want to start a kickstarter to put a hit on Bay, he must be stopped. 2/10

Oh, I did like one part, just one. The turtles are in an elevator heading to the big battle and Mikey starts making beats with his nunchuks, soon they all follow. Only entertaining moment.

I tried...I REALLY tried... (A novel by SchaefDizzle)

I wanted to be surprised and actually like this movie, but DAMN did it suck. Lots of things bothered me but here's the main stuff:

-The Dummies Guide to Ninjitsu: So Splinter learned his craft from a book, eh? What a terrible change to the story. Learning the moves of the old style, those being Shredder and Yoshi's techniques, and passing them on to his sons is what makes Splinter the other side to Shredder's coin. It's BETTER that their origins are connected on that level rather than them

It's BETTER that their origins are connected on that level rather than them starting as some test pets in a lab. There's no way they learned what they know from, basically, Google and Siri.

-Speaking of pets in a lab: Why in the hell did they go this route? Sachs couldn't just have been experimenting on, say, a warthog and a rhino or something, then the ooze ends up in the sewers? To me, this is like Bruce Wayne's parents dying in a car crash. Bruce would still be pissed, but would he be the same person? Changing the origin of the turtles changed WHY they fight and instead made them chaos to Shredder's order, nothing more. There was no emotional connection.

-What happened to the bad guys? Eric Sachs (yeah, yeah, Eric Sachs/Oroko Saki, I get it...), Karai and a bunch of Foot Ninjas basically disappear. We see Shredder's hand move... Then the bad guys simply vanish. We don't get even a hint of what happened to them?

-The lack of lair: The sewer den is a place of fanboy legend. It's the Hook & Ladder Firehouse, the Batcave, the Fortress of Solitude, etc. The den has always been explored for us to reveal that it's extensively lived in, filled with gadgets, toys, supplies and furniture that you can tell were stolen, rebuilt, reused and/or discovered on a trash pile. This film barely showed anything except the big room where they receive a punishment, some computer screens, and a giant...wall of...boomboxes for some reason. I felt that we got no sense of who they were before the events of the movie without seeing much more of where and how they live.

-No teenage angst: Other than Raph mentioning early on that he plans to leave the team, the turtles never had their cabin fever mentality that really solidified that they were kids. We saw them sneak out for the subway scene and quickly get caught, but that was it. Yeah, April had all those pictures of the mark on different walls, but there was never a time when the turtles showed us that they are tired of living underground and in the shadows for reasons OTHER than fighting the Foot.

-And just who WERE the Foot? So in the original film, I always loved the angle that the Foot were the wayward youth, the outcasts finally given a home and someone to take care of them. That made sense. These guys were just a bunch of assholes in suits and masks doing it for what? Money? JUST money?

-No practical anything: There were several times when I realized 4 or 5 minutes had passed without the viewer seeing a single thing that wasn't created on a computer somewhere. The characters, vehicles, backgrounds, weather, people, etc were completely CG for LOADS of time. I felt like I was watching a video game, not a movie. I actually think if they made the EXACT same film but used puppet suits like the original, I'd like this movie and a few others might too. Also, as creepy as the turtles faces are, and they ARE, Splinter was a fucking joke. That was some Sharknado animation right there...

-Why did Shredder build that suit, exactly? So Shredder had this giant metal magnet suit BEFORE he learned of turtles taking down their gang activity. Ooooookay...

-Why didn't April show the photos to her boss? Even though Donnie wiped her camera phone, April snapped a few more pics that she later showed to Sachs. Instead of showing THESE to her boss, she accepts getting fired. Why?

-The look of the turtles: Okay, fine, they made them CGI, whatever, I'll get over it. But why were they covered in so much shit? Raph had sunglasses that didn't fit his face, yet never fell off. Mikey has pooka shells. Leo has bamboo armor. Oh and because Donnie's a nerd, he has nerd glasses and a proton pack. What the hell do they need all this shit for?

-The turtles' personalities were based upon the viewer already having inside information and not established as NEW: Because we already know that Raph is a hothead and questions Leo's leadership, it comes as no surprise the first time they squawk at each other. Then during the final fight, for no reason, all of a sudden Raph likes that Leo calls the plays. We never see Raph learn anything, yet he is now a changed character. Because we know that Mikey is the "funny" one, his creepy jokes toward April, depreciating cracks at Vernon and constant wise-cracking are supposed to be the humor. Without knowing who he is, he comes off as an annoying, perverted ridiculous creature. Leo is the leader because he's always been the leader, right? He never struggles with his position and never has to make the tough decisions a leader has to make. He just leads and they follow. And Donnie is the smart one because he has geek glasses, a nerd voice and stops a computer countdown from destroying the world. How about we see him BUILD something? His intellect always looks more like luck in this film.

-And a Ninja Turtle film without a hint, even some scary graffiti or something, that Casey Jones is out there doing his thing...you were swimming against the current from the get-go, guys.

Long winded, I know, but I wanna say I really TRIED to get into this movie. The first 20 minutes weren't horrible and neither was Fox, then the turtles got stuck in a pipe and one of them farted and I knew the jig was up. Downhill from here, folks. Kids will eat it up, as will adults who demand little from their entertainment. I usually like what Bay and Liebsman put out, but this was plain bad. I watched the Steve Baron original when I came home as a palate cleanser and boy is that movie still amazing. Sucks that this is what we get now...

End of PART ONE (...Kidding...)

Oh my god thank you! You said everything I forgot to say in my review. I totally forgot how bad the cg was for splinter. He looked like a horse and a shark had a baby. You change the simple origin you change the simple motive of the turtles! I did the same thing after and watched the original. One of the best adaptations/superhero movie ever and it's darker than The Dark Knight if I say so myself!

You've covered most of the bases, thank you.

I was really bummed out that all the hard work from the production designer was wasted by not showing off the Turtle lair. Tragedy.

I can live with the CG Turtles, but I can't watch another movie where Meghan Fox's frozen botox face stares at me with the same expression no matter what "emotion" she's trying to fake.

Although Megan Fox wasn't as bad as I thought she'd be, the movie was still a giant piece of shit. I find it funny that people on this post are "defending" this movie by giving it a 3/5; that's still a pretty crappy rating in my book.

Not a terrible film

My girlfriend and I both enjoyed the film, 6/10 from both of us, characters were true to what I know them to be, action was pretty exciting, Shredder although a little to mobile from the armor he wore was great in his battles with Splinter and the turtles. I'm up for a sequel if they decide to move forward with this new incarnation.

P.S. I'll miss the dozens of thumbs down I would have gotten for being positive about a movie the fanboys all hate on joblo :-/

Every review I read is all about Bay, his style of movies and raping our childhoods, and no mention of the ACTUAL Director. So yeah, I am gonna say had Bay's name not been on this, reactions would be different. Not to say people would suddenly love it, but the backlash would certainly be different and the ACTUAL Director might have his name mentioned.

I enjoyed the movie, FAR from perfect, felt a bit rushed and, sounds strange, but needed to be longer to flesh out the story more. Also, the climax is somewhat ambiguous and could use some clean up. So, Yeah, it has it's faults but I did enjoy it and fully agree that if this didn't have Bay's name on it, the backlash would be different.
Honestly. It's like every reviewer forgot Jonathan Liebesman had actual say in this film and he has zero fault in the final product. I DON'T GET IT!! Hate the movie all you want, but hate it because of the DIRECTOR, not the money behind it.

I agree with you 100%. I never have understood the hate for Bay. His movies are fun and by no means Oscar contenders, but fun none the less. I kind of admire the guy because he makes his movies the way he wants and not the way the fan boy masses think he should make them. As for this film, I have not seen it, but I am looking forward to it. So screw the Bay haters, he is just the producer, and give the director his credit, good or bad.

A movie like this is never going to be overly loved by critics, but I don't think it was meant to be. The story is a repeat of over a hundred other films and a lot of the acting was pretty dull and wooden. I went to this for nostalgia and that is exactly what I got. I was worried the new look of the Turtles was going to bother me but after 2 or 3 minutes I was used to it and moved on. They tried to do what they did with Transformers and bring it in to this century. I think it worked just fine.

Sure Megan Fox is there only for sex appeal and Will Arnett was cast aside but when the Turtles were on screen, I had a smile on my face.

Watching a movie is an act of trust on the part of the cinema-goer. Not just in the context of the money and time we surrender, but in the emotions we invest. Cinema is an direct line between creators and viewers.

So, when Michael Bay (Rotten Tomatoes average 31.6% Fresh) taps Jonathan Liebesman (30.8%) of Battle: Los Angeles fame direct a script by Applebaum and Nemec, whose only films are Mission Imposible: Ghost Protocol (93%) and Now You See Me (50%), and Dauherty, whose only films are Snow White and the Huntsman (48%) and Divergent (41%), and they place Megan Fox (37.5%) as the lead we are well within our rights to question whether we should give you our trust.

In response to our doubts, Megan Fox has told us "Let me tell you something about those people. How much money did Transformers 4 make? Exactly. Those people can complain they all go to the theater. They're gonna love it and if they don't love it, they can fuck off, and that's the end of that."

You know what, I'll take your advice. I'll fuck off. You can take everyone else's $8.50, but you're not gonna take mine. You could have challenged me to give your movie a chance, to see it and make my own judgment. But instead you used the very mature and well-reasoned argument of "fuck off".

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens this weekend. I'll take my $8.50 and watch Guardians of the Galaxy a second time. Because it's a great movie, made by a studio that doesn't treat me like a piece of shit who has no choice but to see their movie.

Signed,

Someone who finally took your advice and gladly fucked off."

Wow I wish i could be so oblivious to life that Michael Bay producing a ninja turtles movie would be the worst thing that ever happened to me. Read the news once in a while fanboys, maybe get a little perspective.

They said Sachs 10x more than they said Turtles

From the Monk narrated animated intro I knew we where in for something bad. Then for the next 15 minutes we are introduced to Fox's horrible April. Finally we get a quick joke from Mikey and that's it. The foot soldiers were horrible. Shredder felt forced in since Eric Sachs was the villain. Splinter is like Yoda no one needs to see them fight. That was so terrible. The origan made me punch myself toake sure I was alive. Project Rennissance Ha!!!!! It felt like Tommy Wisseu made this movie.

I hope there is no sequel I don't want to see them piss on Super Shredder and Casey Jones. I bet he will be an ex hockey player or something stupid. Can't things happen on their own then one thing brings everyone together, like most good litature? This movie wasn't clever and the characters were not the Turtles. They felt super Poochey! Excellent

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(2014) currently sits at 20% on Rotten Tomatoes critic reviews. What does that have to say about this movie? Absolutely nothing. It is stupid to sit here and state that you shouldn't listen to a critics review of a movie, while offering up my own review, but that is what I am here to do, and you don't have to listen to mine either.

It is stupid to sit here and state that you shouldn't listen to a critics review of a movie, while offering up my own review, but that is what I am here to do, and you don't have to listen to mine either.

As a kid, the Ninja Turtles were my favorite characters. I loved them. I still have all four turtles from the original movie somewhere in my garage, I have the original movie on VHS, and all three of the original movies on DVD. Turtle fans like me, are the ones who have been complaining ever since Michael Bay was attached as a producer, and when the designs of the turtles came out, Turtle fans threw a fit. Unlike those Turtle fans, I didn't worry about Bay's attachment to this movie, nor did I really freak out about the designs, although it was off putting a bit. As I entered the theater, as I do every movie I have a certain fan attachment to (Batman), I didn't go in worrying about these slight changes in the looks or any other issues fans of the original TMNT had. So how did I feel when I left the theater? I felt like a kid again.

The story wasn't anything special, it is hard to give a movie a positive review when the story isn't well written, and has major plot holes. Movies are forms of story telling, so when not having a good story, its hard to say something positive. Fortunately, that didn't bother me in the slightest. Why? Because I saw this movie in the same eyes that saw the original, the eyes of a child seeing the turtles come to life on the screen. This is a movie that should bring all the Turtle fans nostalgia, but unfortunately these fans are going into it ignorantly, and not realizing they are in there 20's-30's, and were a child when they fell in love with the Turtles. Go back and watch the original 1990's movie, the story isn't anything to write home about, it is also sitting at a negative 40% (only 20% higher then the new one) on Rotten Tomatoes. When you go back to watching the 90's movie, you will always love it because it was the biggest thing in your life when you were a child, you didn't care about the story, you cared about the action, and the Turtles, and how cool and fun and funny they were to watch. Well guess what, 2014 TMNT, the turtles are cool, fun, and super funny, and the action is simply AWESOME.

Lets talk character designs. Sure, its super off putting at first, but once the turtles are in action, and interacting with each other, the design and personalities meld together and then you realize, that is Leonardo, that is Raphael, that is Donatello, that IS Michelangelo. You can't deny these are the Turtles you grew up on (TV/MOVIES. Comics, they are a bit different). If you deny that these are the turtles, you are simply being ignorant and blinded by childhood.

Megan Fox is another issue the fans had with playing April O'Neil. She was decent. Nothing special. If any character in this film fell flat, it was unfortunately Will Arnett as Vern, and I love Will Arnett. Not saying he is awful in this, but his jokes fell flat and he felt a bit underused.

Overall, the critics are going to slam this film because they are looking at it professionally, they are looking for a tight, well plotted story. Fans of the original TMNT are going to slam this film because they can't get over the fact that it is a different generation, and the fact that when they fell in love with the turtles it was new, and exciting for them, and the story meant nothing to them, and the action was mind exploding, and the characters were SUPER COOL, but they were also most likely children. The thing with fandoms (especially a nostalgic fandom) is one small change makes them flip out. You could recreate the original TMNT movie scene by scene, but give the turtles four fingers and they would flip the shit out and say it is the crappiest movie of all time. I loved this movie. I felt like a kid again, I left feeling like a kid. I was in aw of the turtles like I was seeing them for my first time. Something I did NOT feel while watching the animated TMNT movie in 2007 (I did not like that movie). Anyone leaving that theater hoping to see a movie close to the original is going to be leaving disappointed, maybe angry, and these are the people who don't realize that the original movie is special because you were a kid and you fell in love with the movie as a kid, and it will always hold a place in your heart and will always blind you from any negative aspects of that film, they didn't matter to you then because you were a kid, and they shouldn't matter now because it is in a special place in your heart. Give the new TMNT flick a chance, see it as you saw the original as a kid.

I give this movie:
4 and a half-shells(get it?) out of 5.

liked it

I liked a number of things here, Splinter vs Shredder, Mikey, Turtle interaction, the nods to the older material, the Turtles' look and even watching the Shredder in action. A few of the action set pieces were good fun. I actually didn't mind Fox as April when I thought she'd be the worst part of the film. I actually thought Arnett was useless though and Whoopi was pointless.

The story was by the numbers and really, anyone other than the Turtles in comedy spots were just not working.

I thought it was a solid start but hoping there's more meat in a potential sequel. I'll certainly add it to the rest of my TMNT collection.

About What I Expected- A Weak Attempt

I love the Turtles, but not like this. Megan Fox's acting was a crime against all Turtle fans! Usually, you want to start a movie on your best foot, but TMNT led in with 10 minutes of Megan Fox which absolutely killed the movie for me right off the bat. She was noticeably "trying to act". Will Arnett while I love him in Arrested Development is completely useless here. In short, I could hear the honest trailer while I was watching the movie. I'm still not a fan of the turtles look; too big and too fake. I didn't like their take on the origin of them either. Their characters (especially Mikey) were not enough to save the film from every human dragging it down. And don't even get me started on the weakness of Shredder's character. Really no backstory there. Leaving the film, the way I would describe my reaction to TMNT is "indifferent and uninspired". Man, I hate saying that being such a huge Turtle fan. 5/10

GOD-AWFUL

One of the worst badtardizations of material I've seen in a loooong time. Disappointing doesn't even begin to describe it, not that I'm surprised given the people involved. And, somehow, Megan Fox has become an even worse actress. I didn't even think that was possible.

This movie clearly wasn't meant for people like me. The audience is somewhere between the 9 year olds who are loving the current Nickelodeon incarnation and the Bay crowd who have the mental capacity of the 9 year olds and proclaim that any movie with an outlandish concept shouldn't be taken seriously and you should just eat the popcorn and turn your brain off. (I'm gonna go into specifics so here's your head's up.)

(I'm gonna go into specifics so here's your head's up.)

That being said, there were things I liked about the movie. I dug the turtles, anytime they were on screen was great and the internal interactions were fun to watch. Mecha-Shredder wasn't too annoying, I liked that they actually portrayed him as a master martial artist and not just using those dumb ass magnetic throwing knives the whole time. The mountain chase was pretty exciting. A lot of the stuff we were complaining about in stills (turtles, Shredder) looked fine in motion

And the bad...any comic relief that wasn't Mikey fell flat on it's face. Every human fell flat on their face. The Bayisms: pointing out Megan Fox is hot 900x, Raph flexing and the bullet slugs shooting off his shell, etc. Be more of a lackey, Liebesman, you can't. Yet another "master plan" of a toxin being shot out of a mortar on top of a building. Lastly, probably my nerdiest gripe, the origin. I'm being told it's more in line with the new cartoon but why does April/April's dad hafta be involved in the creation of Splinter and the Turtles? They even took away Splinter naming them after Renaissance painters. It's like Peter's dad creating Spider-Man in the newer movies. It's a connection that isn't needed for the story. The cool thing about both properties is it was random and anybody could've been Spidey or, uhh, a giant mutant ninja. The writer just thinks they're being deep and clever.

My wife and I both watch it - we have no kids, but I still find it very fun! and not stupid fun. Im glad I gave it a chance when it came out.

I didn't see the new movie - I have reserved that punishment for cheap Tuesday.

The new cartoon will most likely get a movie of some sort down the line, Nickelodeon tend to pump out films of their properties quite regularly.

I'm concerned about Seth Green taking over for Leo though. Not that I dislike Seth Green, but he sounds wildly different to Jason what's-his-face who's voicing at the moment.

I grew up with the Ninja Turtles. I know these aren't my Turtles. But what I'm really curious about is what either casual fans, younger fans, or non-fans think of it. That, and the box-office receipts, are what I expect will make or break this as a franchise-starter.

5 out of 10. Not as bad as it could've been and I did enjoy some of the action sequences, particularly the chase from Sachs Mansion down the snowy slope. Liebesman showed a good deal more flair here than in Battle: Los Angeles and Wrath of the Titans. There was also one joke I thought was quite clever: Michelangelo singing "Happy Together" which is, of course, by 60s group The Turtles. I'm glad the defining personality traits of each Turtle were preserved to a decent extent.

However, on the whole, it was quite annoying. Just as a lot of the Turtles media from the 80s and 90s felt like it was being focus grouped and market-tested to be as "radical" and "cool" as possible, this came off as trying too hard, particularly in the design department. I'm sorry, those things are frightening. The Turtles are meant to be endearing if not downright cute. They're not meant to be disturbing. Also, Megan Fox is miscast. I know she's a self-proclaimed fan and that she pursued the role but she wasn't a good April O'Neil in the slightest. Jane Levy, Anna Kendrick and Elisabeth Olsen were all apparently considered before Fox was cast - any of those three actresses would have been better. Also, man is there a lot of leering in this kids' movie. Every other Mikey line is perving at April. "She's hot, I can feel my shell tightening" - really? At least it's mild compared to the sexism on display in the Transformers films. And the most annoying piece of product placement to me wasn't the Pizza Hut stuff but a lingering shot of a billboard for Platinum Dunes' "Project Almanac" (directed by Liebesman's cousin) for no good reason.
