What did you think of...The Amazing Spider-Man 2?

May. 2, 2014by: Paul Shirey

After a successful, yet divisive, reboot with 2012's THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, the inevitable sequel has arrived. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, once again directed by Marc Webb, is now in theaters, taking Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) deeper into his comic book roots with a shmorgasbord of characters, including is on/off girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), Aunt May (Sally Field), and a villain sandwich made up of Harry Osborn/Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper), and The Rhino (Paul Giamatti), with the tease of more to come when the spinoff SINISTER SIX comes a knockin'. While the anticipation for the sequel has been every bit as spotty as the last one, it's still got a built in audience of both Spidey fans, both for the films and the characters.

Our own reviews have hit right in the middle with JimmyO's video review giving it 6/10 and Chris Bumbray's written review hitting the same mark. We've seen more than enough promotional materials, including trailers, TV spots, featurettes, images, and teases for the film, and have our own exclusive interviews with the cast and crew, including director Marc Webb, Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, and Dane DeHann, all of which you can see by clicking below!

Now that you've seen all the secrets, reveals, and spoilerific details from the film, we want to hear what YOU thought of the webhead's latest cinematic entry. I agree, it's a flaw in the film that I thought off after the film, but it's a flaw so common in films. Example, the god awful Twilight series. Whenever Jacob and his people transform into wolves their clothes are ripped right off, but when they transform back to human they always have shorts on.
It's a flaw that is merely meant to appease both ratings boards and fans of the comics since Electro was wearing an outfit in the comics.

This movie was not what I expected; it felt long, slow and in-cohesive. But it had alot of good elements too Maybe if I see it again, my opinion will change. Showing the Rhino in the preview was a HUGE mistake, would have worked much better as total surprise. There have been 5 Spiderman movies to date now and as far as I'm concerned, The Amazing Spiderman is the only one I really like. But I will give this film another chance at home for sure.

Very Good

The first Amazing Spiderman was OK, but Amazing Spiderman 2 is the beginning of a lot of great stories. A lot happened in AS2, but for a movie that was close to 2 1/2 hours, I never felt like it dragged, never felt bored. The action, the story, the acting really sucked me in. I didn't expect it to be this good. I do think it has done better than the first Spiderman and 3rd Spiderman movies that Sam Raimi did, but I have a hard time putting it over Spiderman 2. As much as I love Andrew Garfield

As much as I love Andrew Garfield over Tobey Maguire, I thought Alfred Molina was the perfect Doc Ock and really made that movie. Nonetheless, comic book fans should love this movie (not sure why they don't) and casual fans should enjoy this and then some.

I'm surprised that only the minority of people really liked it. I liked it a lot! You should not compare Webb's Spider-Man 2 to Raimi's great Spider-Man 2.

This series continues to surprise me again and again, and is on it's way to being better than Raimi's trilogy, and I say this with Raimi's Spider-Man 2 still being the best of the Spider-Man and Marvel films. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are great together and have so much better chemistry than Maguire and Dunst, they make this film amazing amongst it's great 3D visuals and suspenseful action. This doesn't mean the film is perfect or has everything better than Raimi's films, but on the whole

Also, I'm liking the portrayal of Harry Osborn more in this series than the original. To those who say "too many villains", what about The Dark Knight trilogy, which is still to me the supreme superhero films, those are littered with multiple villains in each of the three films. No one complained there!

Good, Not Great... 6.5/10

I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it and its by far better than Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and more entertaining than his first Spider-Man but it doesn't compare to Spider-Man 2. There are a lot of things about the movie which I enjoyed and think were well done. Then again, I agree with a lot of criticism that has been given towards the film.
PROS:
-Thought the look of Electro (not the characterization) was fantastic. He looked great in IMAX 3D and his scenes with Spidey were intense and

PROS:
-Thought the look of Electro (not the characterization) was fantastic. He looked great in IMAX 3D and his scenes with Spidey were intense and different from any other fight scenes with a villain we have seen up to this point.
-Garfield portrays a better Spider-Man than Tobey ever did with his enthusiasm, charisma and humor
-Obviously chemistry with Emma Stone is perfect and she looked stunning in the film
-Zimmer's score was better than the one for first film from Horner
-Thought the look of the Green Goblin was better than the ugly suit from Raimi's film
CONS:
-Weak Plot, story wasn't very engaging, Harry's frienship with Peter was forced and needed more time to be developed
-Harry needed more time to undergo his dark, evil turn and we needed more of an explanation on how the Spider venom affected him
-First scene with Peter's parents could be removed altogether
-Pre-accident Electro reminded me too much of Jim Carrey's Riddler and I'm not a fan of pathetic, nerd villains such as him and Aldrich Killian in IM3. His motivations for loving and then hating Spider-Man were weak
-Didn't have issue with Rhino's time being a cameo but I can't look past the suit, it is stupid with its machine guns and the CGI on Giamatti didn't look right.

Not sure if I will get thumbs down or up for all this but once more I can say I liked the film, it was fun, but it did have many flaws, could've been much better and its not the best Spider-Man film yet.

I still have my $12 bucks so I'm happy

I haven't seen this movie and won't be seeing it until its available online for $1.99...maybe. This first one was just so terrible, so to anyone bitching about how bad this 2nd one is...if you saw the first you knew this one would be just as bad if not worse. Why did you go see it? Alas, it made like $90 million, so get ready for a 3rd steaming pile! Remember folks Marvel has nothing to do with these "Spider-Man" movies, they are all Sony so don't expect something truly great like Avengers

Why do you think Disney would do a better job than Sony? Disney has put out some very good Marvel films, but they've also put out some shit too. Have you seen Iron Man 2, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Iron Man 3, The Incredible Hulk, and Ultimate Spider-Man (cartoon)? Seriously, Sony has a much better track record than Disney when it comes to Marvel entertainment. Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spectacular Spider-Man (cartoon), The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are all excellent. You

Sony is always going to own the Spider-Man film rights, so get over it.

Movie was the best comic book movie to date. So far this is the only website I've been on where some fans don't like it. I think a lot of people who frequent here think they are critics and have to listen to what real critics say or they won't be taken seriously in their little circle of wannabe "film" buff friends. Think for yourselves. Enjoy these for what they are. Fantastic!!!

Loved it

Wasn't a perfect movie, but it was well done. Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Dane DeHaan did an excellent job. I'm eagerly anticipating The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

I enjoyed this movie fully from start to finish. Yeah in the long run Electro was rather weak, but I'd still take him over the butchering of villains from Spidey 3. Andrew Garfield was tremendous, as was his chemistry with Emma Stone. I really do think marketing hurt this movie more then anything, as the less of Rhino and Goblin we would of have seen the better. But in the end I'm looking forward to ASM3 and that's all that really matters.

Five chapters in the Bible that leaves a lot of room for interpretation vs. 1000+ 22 pg. issues of a character with story-telling spanning 50 years. Not exactly the same.

There were times when it was really cool and there were times that were so dull I found myself nodding off. I dunno if its just me but This series so far is definitely lacking in plot, Character depth and development, pace and overall fun, (which i'll even forgive all of the other things if it's just plain fun). Havent hated but definitely havent loved the Amazing spiderman series so far, but still curious to see where it's headed. ** out of ****

Hate to say it but it was pretty dull. Fight at the end with Electro was disappointing and new Green Goblin looked bad. HUGE plot holes and no emotion for the tragic event.
Only real emotional scene is kid in Spider Man costume at end.
Commercials make it look like mecha Rhino is big part of film.

Total Piece o' Shitake

Two attempts at Spider Man, two fails for Web. It is painfully obvious that Webb and co. have no idea how to create a villain. Electro's motivation was... self esteem issues?! "You need me?"! Really, this was all it took for Electro to want to take down Spidey? Harry just had to say he needed Electro. And then there are the stupid plt holes. Take Gwen claiming to be a high schooler who knew the entire electrical grid of NYC. Thankfully it didn't matter because there was a single switch called,

But oh know, the panel is locked. No problem. Pan back and there is a corpse on the floor with hand outstretched holding the goddamn key. Webb couldn't be bothered with having Gwen need to look for the key. And then there's Harry as Green Goblin mastering the entire Goblin armada instantly. Words cannot describe how stupid this level of filmmaking is. And there will be a third one. Just plain awful.

Rhino was just fine. Yes he was silly but he would've been even sillier in a giant rhino costume :-P

Who cares that he had such little screentime? Do we really want a whole movie with him? Even in the Spidey video games I'm totally over Rhino after fighting him for 3 mins

Uncle Ben is chopped liver

They lost me at the graduation:
May: I wish Ben was able to see you today
Peter: Yeah and my folks....
I'm out!!

Didn't care for Zimmer's score, felt more Superman-y. Whole third act was rushed. Character interaction is Webb's bread and butter and it showed and was the one saving grace of the flick. Garfield is killer as Spidey, he can play for me any day but everything else involved needs to be fine tuned.

Wait...that made you upset? The fact that Uncle Ben was mentioned by his wife and Nephew at the graduation? That makes the character "chop liver"? Not really. It shows that while it's been hard mourning their loss, people generally get on with their lives because life itself doesn't stop when someone important dies. Hence why that dialogue is delivered during the GRADUATION. It's sad because this is a perfect example of subtle character exposition that is brilliant but unfortunately not spoon

Bottom line is they tried to do too much.

I enjoyed the story and the acting but it was overlong and basically had three endings. It would have been far better if they pushed the big climatic event to about a half-hour into the third one. Enough time to set the Goblin up as a villain. In addition Marc Webb has a weird style that didn't always work well for Electro (can't help but feel that Raimi would have done a better version of him.

6/10.

The "Villians are the real protagonists" syndrome isn't as bad as in the Michael Keaton BATMAN movies. But it still suffers from it. Very few scenes are about PETER's personal journey. But you're all right about how there's too much build up and not enough payoff. But to be fair, that's in most superhero movies. In SPIDER-MAN 2 (the best of the franchise), HARRY's storyline was a build up to his transformation into NEW GOBLIN. It also featured the 1st appearance by CURT CONNORS. He didn't turn

Ha! It easy to forget how ridiculously sympathetic the Penguin was in Returns, since the film was so grim otherwise. But Tim Burton's Joker was hardly a protagonist in any capacity.

Being sympathetic has nothing to do with it. Neither does screen time or whose name appears in the title. It's about who has the storyline all the other minor storylines revolve around to. We see THE JOKER, THE PENGUIN, CATWOMAN, ELECTRO and GREEN GOBLIN JR's beginning, middle and end. BRUCE WAYNE does nothing but react to them and he has no motivation other than fighting crime (that's too shallow for a superhero movie). PETER has a couple of scenes about himself and that's it. [Spoilers for BATMAN RETURNS]

Do you remember the ending where BRUCE stops by an alley thinking about CATWOMAN? If it had been a movie about him, we would've seen a hint of what the future holds for him. But the ending is the aftermath of her death. Think of other movies that end like that, and you'll realize that the deceased was the main character.

I enjoyed it thoroughly, but the downside is that it lacked the fight from the villains side. If they're going to set up villains spin-offs, I suggest they better make them worthy. Other than that, I liked the movie. I am not anticipating a sequel now, but I'll spoil it if I say so, and therefore I won't.

They finally got Spider-man right!

. . . if only the other 2 hours was any good. This is a terrible movie, but anytime Spider-man was on screen the action was fantastic! I can't wait until this film comes out on Blu-ray so some fan-editor can cut it down to a 15 minute masterpiece. Seriously, my hats off to the 2nd unit film crew (who shot the action sequences) and the special effects department. They brought their A game.

Some Spoilers

I liked it better than the 1st one. A lot better. Spidey's suit was perfect instead of looking like a basketball. Garfield as Spiderman was great this time, loved the sarcastic jokey side and also glad he kept his mask on instead of taking it off every time he did something. Part of me felt bad for Max and understood where he was coming from when he became Electro but he should have been saved for a different film, this one should have been about Harry becoming Goblin. Why was Rhino even in the film? It should have just been a regular heist in the beginning and maybe a hostage situation at the end with just regular criminals. Rhino wasn't needed. Finally, they handled the Gwen situation really great. Glad there was no ambiguity to it like in the comics, you know what killed her this time. Over all I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one.

I really don't get it!

Did different copies of this movie get sent around because I thought it was the closest thing to a spidey comic i've seen. People call it messy but I didn't feel that at all, it was executed nicely. Electro went crazy, I thought that was obvious and understandable considering. If you listen in the Times Square scene Max's thoughts are in the music, I thought that was awesome. Peter Parker has one of the most tortured existences in comics, but he keeps fighting because it's his responsibility. This Amazing Spider Man did exactly what it needed to do, 8/10.
... Oh, that X-Men clip in the credits felt ridiculously out of place and forced.

I liked it. True Jamie Foxx as Max seemed very much like a Joel Schumacher Batman Villain, but I blame that more on Hans Zimmer's quirky clarinet theme music for Max Dillon. Electro's theme was so bizarre at first, but it was actually quite awesome the more I think about it.

The end had me in tears. I was crying my face off and then when the kid stood up to Rhino, I cried in happiness when Spider-Man came back. It's truly amazing how he grieved for like 5 mins of screentime, but the passing

As for the overall tone of the film, I think you can blame Nolan for that. They drilled into our heads that comic book movies have to be taken seriously and anything like this that came off as a little cartoonish and silly is too far off base. Wrong... This felt like a comic book movie and it was mighty entertaining and emotional.

Also this Dane Dehaan guy is truly exceptional. Stole the movie as Harry and his brief appearance as a thankfully unmasked Goblin. I wrote him off from the trailers because of his douche hair cut, so he really was amazing to win me over like that.

The movie is still not without problems. I'm sure no one really gives a flying crack about the conspiracy with Peter's parents. The the opening scene was pretty exciting and Campbell Scott is great to watch.

Don't get it.

What do people want from a Spider-Man movie? Do they want Toby McGuire crying his way through three films? People need to remember these are comic book films! I'm not a huge fan of any of the Spider-Man films but at least we have a good Spider-Man in these ones. People say it spent too much time setting up the next films, how? The problem is with the people who have been dumping on this since day one because they love the raimi films (films that have aged terribly and have about 2 good performances in the whole trilogy) are going in having already prejudge the movie. Which is a shame because it's not as bad as anyone on here is making out. And as for the reviews it's getting, well it's better than iron man 3 and this site gave that a 9 so yeah I won't really pay much attention to this sites reviews of comic book films.

seriously? So, you think movies like "Spider-Man 3", "Superman 4", "Batman and Robin", "Battleship", "Godzilla" (1998), "Showgirls", "Catwoman", "Battlefield Earth", "Son of the Mask", any of the "Twilight" movies are better? I realize you may not have seen all those movies, but c'mon. Those movies are truly awful movies. You may not have liked "ASM 2", and maybe you are using hyperbole here...but, let's not be lumping this movie into movies that truly are the worst ever.

I thought the movie had some great performances from Garfield, Stone, DeHaan and Field. Some truly great scenes, like the opening chase scene(in 3d) and the Times Square scene.
But Max Dillon and Rhino were cringe worthy. The scenes with Peter and Harry felt forced. Peter's abandonment issues with his parents has dragged on long enough. Gwen's death scene was handled beautifully, almost perfect but the buildup and aftermath just prevented it from really resonating. She dies, fade to black.

What is with this argument that villains need motives. I thought the thing about villains is that they do not need motives. Why cant they just be seriously unhinged, which is what Jamie Foxx was, I thought it was pretty obvious that he had issues from the start. Do people also forget about Power corrupts. So yeh when you have a Psycho who has just acquired new powers I don't think they need much in terms of motive to start wreaking havok.

Should of been called "The Complicated Peter Parker"

Well, I saw it and I have to say that i went in hoping to like this film. Spiderman has been a favorite since I was a child with a Jackson 5 afro. But this film didn't do it for me. I can get behind Andrew being Peter, just wish his hair wasn't so big (maybe thats just me). But alot of stuff happened that got me thinking, "really! Why did so and so become/do ________?" The worst part was I was bored through the middle of the film, the action scenes was cool, but we seen majority of them in

I just deleted a good chuck of what I wanted to say about the film that bothered me, story wise and character wise. Spoilers, duh

A defining moment of just how silly the movie is came when Gwen had to convince Peter to let her go to the hydroelectric plant because she "knows the entire system", making it sound like her expertise will be vital, then when she gets there all she has to do is pull one big Master Reset switch. What?

I'm still not onboard with Andrew Garfield's version of Peter Parker, who is suave, adorably romantic, and popular amongst his classmates. This is a stark departure from the awkward and unlucky science nerd from the comics (and Sam Raimi's movies). Additionally, Spider-Man is not viewed by the public as a villain, but rather he's beloved by the citizenry of New York. Part of the soul of the Spider-Man mythos is that he struggles with his public image just as much as he does with supervillains, but I suppose Marc Webb thinks that's just an inconvenience to be done away with.

The other problem I had (and granted this is not necessarily the filmmaker's fault) is that Sony showed ALL the good stuff from the movie in the trailers. There were no unrevealed surprises to be had by seeing the film, it was all given away months ago. Hell, they even use the final shot of the movie as the exclamation point in the trailer. Why is this now becoming the norm in Hollywood advertising?

False.

How you imagine Peter Parker to be, and how he was portrayed in the previous trilogy, is not how Peter has been portrayed in the comics, in almost 10 years.

Consider this, somehow he has Gwen, MJ, Felicia, Betty Brant, Jessica Drew, Liz Allan and Kitty Pride romantically linked to him.

Also, the publics image of Spider-Man changes with circumstance. I'm sure with the introduction of JJJ, we will see the tide change.

Overall I enjoyed it. There are some movie sins that I counted, like the 'hi-tech holograms in office buildings used to explain most of the movie's background information' cliche, and the fact that Gwen Stacy is basically a walking deus ex machina with talents ranging from biomedical to electrical engineering. But I think the drama parts is good enough to make it a better movie about Peter Parker than the Raimi trilogy. The best scene in the movie is by far Sally Fields' talk with Peter about

But I think the drama parts is good enough to make it a better movie about Peter Parker than the Raimi trilogy. The best scene in the movie is by far Sally Fields' talk with Peter about being a parent to him. I almost cried watching that scene. On the Spider-Man parts, the movie was falsely marketed as 'The Rise of Electro' as the character quickly got sidelined in favor of Harry's character development. In his short screen time, Foxx didn't or couldn't give a convincing performance to make us care enough about Max Dillon before his turn to the dark side. The action in this movie far exceeds the first ASM, though. Garfield's performance as Spider-Man is spot on and we finally got a Spider-man who is actually witty and entertaining to watch. I always think that Tobey never nailed that Spider-Man sense of humor from the comics, but Garfield just does it almost without effort.

That was the best Spider-Man portrayal I've ever seen. Everything about the character, his attitude and his movement was spot on and the film had heart.

But what about the other characters? Since this movie does involve others, and in some cases, their characterizations are so stupid it's face-palm worthy does mean the movie has flaws. The Spider-Man might be good, but that doesn't excuse all the flaws.

Filmguy, I somewhat agree with the silliness of the villains characterizations but in terms of true older spiderman comic villain mythology, they were PERFECT. Every. EVERY spiderman comic back in the day that introduced a villain had a few things. They were a criminal before they got their powers, what ever magnificent thing that happened to change them drove them immediately insane with no explanation. The villains motivations in this movie are straight out of an old issue of a spiderman

And while some of the villain dialogue (ie Jamie Fox's) was cringe worthy I can probably pull out 50 comics that have that EXACT dialogue.

Wasn't that great

Jamie Foxx was embarrassingly bad. I enjoyed SOME of the action scenes but the directing and script sucked. Sooooo many errors. I felt like they brought in Joel Schumacher as a guest director for some scenes. Rhino looks awful too. I REALLY hoped it'd be good. Maybe another watch and I'll enjoy it more.

The trailers gave me the vibe that it wasn't going to be very good, but I thought maybe they were just struggling to market it. Very Good (SPOILERS) 8/10

Not Great, but Very Good Film. I'm a very big Spidey Fan and I was on the hate train after I watched part 1 and the trailers for part 2. But I had to get off the last stop because I like how they are setting things up for future Spidey flicks. And even though it kind of bothers me that everything and everyone is coming from Oscorp and he is sort of the evil Tony Stark of the Sony Marvel Universe (which is ironic because he was IRON PATRIOT in the comics), it makes sense in this cinematic universe. Garfield is perfect as Spidey, as is every main actor in the film. I actually hate Electro in the comics, but he was done well on film. The scene with him and Harry getting revenge at Oscorp was great. The inevitable Gwen scene was done to perfection, very powerful, very emotional. I teared up a little, and so did my kids, because you cared for her and Peter. And even though I knew it was coming. It was still shocking seeing it happen. One of the best things about the flick is seeing Ol' Webhead behaving like Spidey. In the Raimi films, he did'nt always behave like Spider-Man, which kind of bothered me. They brought back the web shooters in this series and used his Spidey-sense more, and both were intricate to the plot. I would like to say that I did not like Dr. Kafka or the RHINO. The RHINO in particular bothered the shit out of me because Giamatti is such a good actor, and to act so horrible on purpose is so fucked up. I feel like, he feels like he doesn't have to take this role serious because it's a comic book film. Well you know what.. Fuck him! I call that TOMMYLEEJONES syndrome. It's a disease caused by actors who become too full of shit. And besides Giamatti's bad acting, the RHINO itself was just done terribly. The RHINO was never a really great character, but he was always cool looking, a great second rate character. Even in the UlTIMATE comics he looked cool, actually cooler. He was a man who accidently melded with Rhino skin and started robbing banks. In the film, he's just a little stupid guy, who likes to laugh alot while driving a mechanical Rhino. All kinds of stupid, and that's sad because the scene itself was really touching. Anyway, I'm done rambling. I give the film an 8 out of 10

Enjoy it for what it is. A complicated good time.

I get what Sony is trying to do here. Marvel/Disney is dominating, DC is doing everything they can to compete and Sony needs something to keep up. Did they rush Goblin into it? Yes, because Electro/Foxx with more time as the only villain would have been sweet, but Sony feels that it needs to create the spinoffs to make their own noise in the superhero world. What they don't realize is people love Spiderman and will always make time for a movie. The spinoffs should have been built slowly

For what we get with this movie though is the best couple chemistry in the superhero genre today, some great action sequences, a better Spiderman in Garfield and finally a Spiderman movie that understands how to thread the needle between what the studio needs and what the fans want. It is far from perfect, but let's enjoy ASM2 for what it was, the means to an end.

I loved it! I thought the dialogue was great. I thought Andrew Garfield was awesome and there's no way you can look at the scene where Gwen dies and say that he's worse than Toby Maguire. I thought it was interesting they had more popular music than an orchestrated film score. I was kind of dissapointed in the Stan Lee cameo. His cameo was a lot better in the last movie. Over all a very fun movie.

6/10 is too generous. This surprises me, as I was a defender of the first Amazing Spider-Man opposite a lot of dislike from my peers and fellow movie fans.

That being said, despite the charm and chemistry of Garfield/Stone, this movie redefines messy and dumb. 4/10

The Abysmal Spider-Man

Worst Spider-Man movie yet. Even Raimi's third movie was more cohesive than this. Every villain here is bland and underdeveloped and Electro's motives are absolutely retarded. Dehaan was actually a pretty good Harry and his performance as the Osborn heir is one of the few highlights of the film, but he was a terrible Green Goblin. Top it all off with some cringe-worthy dialogue and "humor" and you have what may end up being the worst movie of summer 2014. Any legitimate Spider-Man fan

I liked it a lot. I didn't love it, but I did enjoy it very much. Electro was a very cool villain and he looked AWESOME. I also thought the Green Goblin looked great. He was actually creepy and Dane DeHaan was a great Harry Osborn. Honestly my only problem with the movie was Rhino. Even though he was in the film for a short amount of time, he was just loud and annoying. Besides that, I really enjoyed the movie. I'm looking forward to The Amazing Spider-man 3 and the Sinister Six movie.

definitely 6/10. I hated the first one and had low as hell expectations. Villains were underused and Spidey's humor was generally good, but the name Deadpool kept flashing in my mind. Green Goblin without the mask SUCKS. The big thing about the Goblins in Spiderman lore is that he didnt know who was under the masks and within 30 seconds Harry was recognized. And I dont get the love for Dane DeHaan

Not as bad as people are saying...

Saw it today and had a blast with it. But it was more entertained by it than thought it was a good movie. For some reason, the fact that the villains are so poorly done character and acting wise didn't bother me all that much. Maybe the fact that the Peter and Gwen stuff is so strong and I thought there some really visually interesting action scenes made me let a lot slide. Definitely worth you time if you're a comic book or Spidey fan in general but I think non comic fans will enjoy it less.

I really cant see what problem people had with the villains. I am so tired of people whinging about their screen time when if they had been put in for the majority of the movie people would have criticised Webb for packing too much in (Style over substance) I thought it had a really good balance. Back in the day you usually wouldn't have a villain and hero face off until the end of the movie. But I liked the way it ended with it having a face off with one villain and introducing the next two

(SPOILER) I also liked the way that Harry used Electro when breaking back into Oscorp. Little things like that really stood out for me in this movie.

Spoilers, Spoilers, Spoilers

I know I'm going to get hate about this, but I have to say it; I never liked Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, and it may be for that reason that I like these movies so much better. Garfield brings life and personality to the character that was sorely missing in the Raimi trilogy. Reading these comments, it is clear to me that we all have our own interoperation of what Peter Parker is supposed to look like. IMO, Garfield is him.

The film was carried by the chemistry b/w Garfield and Stone. I

The film was carried by the chemistry b/w Garfield and Stone. I want to suggest that this movie was more about a hero's worst nightmare coming true (collateral damage in personal life), than the stereotypical villain plot to destroy the city. It's for this reason I believe it is misunderstood.

Electro was a strong villain, but a weaker character. I think that it was an interesting direction that makes sense for rivalry reasons to make Harry the Green Goblin. The stage is now set for an epic fight b/w childhood friends that has true bad blood b/w them, literally.

The score is awesome! Hans Zimmer does it again.

Not perfect by any means...

But I enjoyed it. The script was choppy and definitely tried to fit too much in; however, I pretty much knew that was going to be the case going in and was surprised at how little it detracted from my enjoyment. And perhaps I enjoy hipster more than cheese, but despite them squeezing most of Harry's character arc (3 movies in the Raimi-verse) into one film, I found it much more believable and did more justice to the character. I still love the Raimi flicks, but I dare say that I like these

SPOLIERS (In case you missed the headline)

I loved it until I hated it. Just because something happens in the comics doesn't mean it HAS to happen in the movies. The Osborne plot was changed significantly from the original source material, which was a little jarring, but ultimately fine by me. But the filmmakers felt that they had to include something that I believe should have been left out of this incarnation. Stone and Garfield were the driving force behind this series and their love

Stone and Garfield were the driving force behind this series and their love story was 100 times greater than Maguire/Dunst sap fest. Yes, it packed a real emotional punch, which I'm sure Webb was going for, but lightening is very unlikely to strike twice here. Whoever ends up as MJ is going to have her work cut out for her.

Good performances, messy script.

The action was fun and the cast were good, but it felt very rushed and tried to pack in too much sequel/spin off stuff. In the end it felt like a less enjoyable Iron Man 2 and not enough like a movie about Spider-man.

I think people are looking at this all wrong. I think people are seeing this as a seperate movie when really it is a trilogy. I saw this more as Harry's introduction going into the third film (SPOILER)plus with the fact that he was responsible for a certain persons downfall I think we are going to see something quite special in the third movie with that built up hate between Harry and Peter

As a hipster love story it's one of the most enthralling summer blockbuster I've seen in years. And in that sense it improved significantly on the joyous essence of the first. Where it fails iagain is trying to mesh the amazing writing and charm of the Garfield & Stone, & even Field moments with subpar writing and staging that comprises the rest of the film.

Solid B+

I saw the movie on Wednesday and really enjoyed it. Action was awesome, Garfield nails the character, and was very relatable to the character I grew up with. Like all super hero films, you must suspend disbelief. I really do not care about how true it is to the comics. This is a take on the character that I have enjoyed. The movie is not without its faults. That is for sure. But it was a fun ride and really sets up a lot for the future of the franchise. Which I really enjoyed. The

Loved It.

Action was great, suit looks amazing, and it used soooo many elements from the comics, just so awesome.

Its definitely my favourite Spidey of the 5 (the others were great at the time, but having gone back and re-watched, ouch!).

I was really worried about how Electro was going to come off, but I think they did a great job with him, contrary to what the trailers make him out to be.

My one complaint being that the story could have been easily developed into two movies, and would have

My one complaint being that the story could have been easily developed into two movies, and would have probably been better for it. (a couple of elements really should have had more time to develop)

I would have broken it up like this
Movie 1:
- Peter finds out his parents were leaking secrets
-Gwen starts applying for Oxford
-Peter and Gwen Break Up
-Harry comes back, but starts getting sick at the end of the movie
-Peter and Gwen get back together, Peter decides to join her in England
-Final fight with Electro

Movie 2:
-Peter starts to discover the truth about his parents
-Harry begins to slowly transform into the Goblin and starts experimenting on himself, and eventually comes to the realization that Spideys blood could cure him
-Introduction of the Venom symbiot (possibly as a potential cure for Harrys illness)
-Harry fully turns into the Goblin, orchestrates a breakout of Ravencroft to draw out Spider-Man (and set up the Sinister 6)
-Harry/Peter kill Gwen
-Harry is captured, but several of the Ravencroft inmates are still on the loose

Then from that point on, you just go with the final 15 minutes of Amazing Spider-Man 2.

I wouldnt take anything out of the movie, I would just want more screen time to flesh out the plots.

Went in with very low expectations.

Just felt like seeing a big expensive blockbuster and I did actually sort of like the first one(even though it was redundant). But this one dissapointed me on every level possible. Garfield and Stone were fine as leads in a quirky romantic comedy, but not for one second did their characters feel like Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey. Dehaan was terrific, unfortunately every scene he was in made no sense whatsoever at all. Foxx who I usually despise was actually pretty alright, but weirdly underused

A clusterfuck of epic proportions that made me dislike the first one more in retrospect. I urge anyone to avoid this one at all costs!

Had very little expectations

I went in with SUPER low expectations. It just looked bad from the previews. I saw it and wow was it as bad as I thought it would be. It wasn't a good movie. The villains were not interesting and had little to no motives. Rhino was useless, Electro was as bad as Arnold playing Mr. Freeze and Kid Goblin was the worst Goblin yet. Franco's Goblin Jr even makes Dane DeHaans Kid Goblin look like a pansy.

No expecations

I went in to The Amazing Spider-man 2 with little to no expectations, I disliked the first Amazing Spider-man, but I am a DIE HARD Green Goblin Fan, so any time Green Goblin is present I usually give it a try. For starters, the relationship between Peter and Harry should have been just as important as Gwen and Peter. It was to rushed and not really believable. At first I hated the representation of the Green Goblin, I think someone best described him looking as a dirty homeless person with super powers. When I saw him in Action I started to warm up to him. Also SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS....Norman better not be dead, huge HUGE mistake if that is true. Norman should have had the Pleasure of Killing Gwen Stacey. Electro was meh, the final battle scene looked like it was ripped of from the universal Spider-man ride, at least that what it felt like to me. I hated hated HATED Dr. Kafka, minus the change from female to male which isn't a huge deal they made him into a German mad scientist...it was to corny and just dumb. I really can't get behind Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker but I did begin to like him as Spider-man he seemed jovial and in good spirits, and the two scenes with the kids were spot on, on how I Spider-man acting towards kids, these scenes were one of the best scenes of the movie, which is kinda sad. so yeah I left feeling meh, when I should have left excited about the next flick and excited about what I was going to see next.

I'm so torn on this movie. There were parts that I LOVED, and others that made me so mad. The webswinging and action scenes were incredible, but Jamie Foxx's Max Dillon pre-Electro was awful. I'm still pissed about the Goblin decision too. SPOILERS

Why kill off Norman? That's like killing off Lex Luthor in a Superman movie before he gets to fight Superman. The decision to have Harry be the Goblin instead of his father first screams less "this is a better idea for the story" and more

It wasn't as bad I was expecting. One reviewer said it was the "Batman Forever" of the Spider-Man films, and he's 100% right. It was too rushed, like Sony was forcing Marc Webb to set up the spin off movies. I mean, the pivotal scene with Gwen was pretty effective, even if they completely screwed the pooch on the Goblin, and what was Electro's plan, really? The Times Square sequence was good in showing how misunderstood he was, but after that he went straight into super villain mode.

I can't bring myself to recommend this to people at regular ticket price. It's matinee or blu ray instead.

Seriously?

What I got most out of this, was how much of an FU this was to Spider-Man as a whole. The characters are treated almost as rag dolls, and the only character development we really get was between Peter and Gwen (obviously). This movie made me appreciate what Sam Raimi did for Spider-Man...he was a visionary, a die hard fan, and his Spidey movies had a heart and soul. I don't think any Spidey fan or even a spectator who truly appreciates cinema would say this movie has a higher cinematic quality

I don't think any Spidey fan or even a spectator who truly appreciates cinema would say this movie has a higher cinematic quality than Spider-Man 3. I for one would rather watch Spider-Man 3 any day before this convoluted mess...and we all obviously know that SM3 was pretty convoluted too.. (Also coming from a guy who didn't really hate SM3, AND appreciates it a lot more as of now).

I think one of the biggest problems with a lot of failing superhero movies today, are that studios over think everything. I remember people complaining last night that they just wanted to see more Spidey in action, and I think that's what we need, but we can still achieve a well crafted story while doing so (it really is possible). I mean, do we really give two shits about Peter Parker's background? Let alone his dead parents...who really never even had an impact on Peter's story? Isn't Uncle Ben supposed to be his true 'father' growing up? We have more references to Peter's dad than Uncle Ben himself! I apologize for ranting and drooling over Raimi, but it just goes to show how we can achieve great movies (even through the studio system) as long as there's a true visionary/someone who's done their homework thoroughly. Unless, we have assholes like Avi Arad who has no knowledge on the material and is only there to ensure the movie has monetary success without worrying about the damn details. This is no excuse to me, Sony should be ashamed of themselves, especially when they never even allowed Raimi to finish his Spidey series with SM4.

I had to reply to you. I feel the EXACT SAME WAY. I figured you'd need some support so I am giving it to you.

Spiderman 3, even tho it was a bit of a mess - was still way better.

And I agree, there is no heart and soul to these movies. They are basically pie chart films that sony makes in order to maintain the rights.

They have a pie chart of things that they think people want and they do it all by the numbers and its good to go. Makes some good money opening weekend due to the name,

Thanks. But yeah, ticks me off. Look at the trailers and promotions compared to what they did with Raimi's trilogy and Webb's movies. I honestly felt way more teased, excited, and thrilled to what we had with Raimi. The strange thing though, Zimmer did some interesting stuff with the score, I especially (actually) loved that really ominous track that played during a lot of Harry's scenes. I didn't see the entire film. I've seen a few pivotal scenes from a friends bootleg, because I want to see it in theaters tonight. But from what I watched, I can tell you that the film does feel very uneven in that some scenes are really well done dramatically, while others are ridiculously corny. There's no balance. But it does have that SPIDER-MAN comic book feel, that vibe that you only get when reading SPIDER-MAN, and I think that's what saves it. I will watch the entire film in theaters

I thought it was a good solid flick, and feel its been the best representation of Spiderman yet. In terms of first and second movie. I thought the introductions to the villains were handled very well considering the subject matter and opened up the Spiderman universe into something epic going into the third movie. I thought the ending was powerful and emotional. So yeh I had a blast with it. Will be happy to see it again

Not without flaws. However..

Let's get something straight. I'm a HUGE Spidey fan. I've built a collection of the comics for over 10 years. Despite the structural issues and the unfortunate miscast of Jamie Fox as electro, this movie was fantastic. The chemistry between Garfield and Stone and Field was infectious. Now, I must say, the people who keep saying this movie is terrible need to surgically remove the gigantic stick from their collective asses. Sorry for being defensive but you people really need to lighten up. If you didn't get joy in seeing Spidey fix a kids miniature wind turbine and then walk him home after saving him from a group of bullies then you have no soul. You also aren't a spiderman fan no matter what you say, and you either knew you were going to have a bad time going in or your just happily riding the reboot hate train. I hate to be so defensive but I cannot understand some of you people. "Just like Shumacher's Batman and Robin" Please. Besides Fox's electro origin being and exact rip off of Jim Carrey's Riddler origin in batman forever, saying this it even comes close to that is asinine. For all those who were pissed the Rhino was only in it for 4 minutes have never read a spiderman comic. I just got through one that had him in just the beginning and the end with no other links to that issues plot. This movie, besides its minimalistic tonal issues and forgivable structure issues, was fantastic. I cannot say this enough, and I'm sorry because I'm not usually this defensive, but you haters need to lighten up.

I think a true spiderman fan would find something to love in any adaptation of the character that is even remotely connected. I happen to like the Japanese one and I loved the Hammond tv series too!

I have also collected and read spiderman since childhood, and was even reading superior spiderman, but I stopped (although I think peter is back or is coming back soon).

Anyway, my point is that I want to love anything spiderman related, but for some reason I just couldn't get behind the first

Anyway, my point is that I want to love anything spiderman related, but for some reason I just couldn't get behind the first film of this new series - I mean its all at night and whatever, and i really don't care about peters parents - someone else mentioned this but i mean isn't ben his "father" in the best sense of the word.

It just feels like these newer ones are cashing in on the name more than anything else.

I have not see part 2 yet, ill be seeing it imax 3d on Tuesday, but the things i have heard are not making me happy, then again just seeing spiderman swing around and help people is almost enough for me to forgive anything else i don't like - i love spiderman the character and as long as he is ok, the rest isn't such a big deal.

i also actually enjoyed batman and robin for pure fun adam west style camp - i also LOVE the adam west show too, so i am pretty loose when it comes to movies based on characters i love.

Hey Marty really enjoyed reading your post and I think you picked up on really important points regarding the comics. (SPOILER) Again I really liked the moment in the first quarter not long after Peter and Gwen have had their separation and you see Peter as Spiderman watching her from the rooftops. It was little details like that and the details you mentioned, that for me really make this a good Spiderman movie.

Thanks Boba! I think some of the criticisms from most of the people are valid. But there is an over abundance of people that seem to be saying they hate it, just because. For no real reason, other than its cool to hate on reboots. I know that's a pretty broad generalization but seriously some of these people are talking about this movie like it killed their puppy.

I'll probably catch some flack for this...

but, 3/10. 4 at best. This movie, while not as terrible as Raimi's SpiderMan 3, was an absolute mess. The only thing it really had going for it was Peter and Gwen's chemistry. And I do mean the ONLY thing. Everything else was a wasted effort.

And for the people complaining about the spoiler, granted, you (like me) may not exactly have been expecting it to happen in THIS movie, but it was gonna happen. That moment is one of the iconic defining moments in Pete's life as Spider-Man and helps

Loved it!

Yes, some scenes were bad (like awful, bad) and I still can't figure Electro out, but overall the movie is a LOT of fun. White-hot chemistry between Gwen and Peter, Sally Fields brings the emotions via Aunt May, and the score by Hans Zimmer is f*cking fantastic. Again, some parts were too corny and too cartoon-y for my taste, but the good outweighs the bad in a big way. 8/10 from me!

Good cast wasted in a huge mess

Lots of plot elements in service of no actual story. And tonally it's a huge mess. Some great moments, but they're just moments. This thing is a 2 and 1/2 hour commercial for more sequels. Wished they made an actual movie, then I'd care to actually see more movies. As it is, I'm pretty over this franchise.

I enjoyed the hell out of it. Granted, there were a FEW moments that had me cringing and got dangerously close to getting on SPIDER-MAN 3's level but it corrected itself. Some parts could've been cut out while other areas needed to be fleshed out more. In the end though, I was entertained/satisfied and clapped with the rest of the crowd.

It's a 5 out of 10 for me. There are some elements that worked but on the whole, I thought it was way, way too cheesy and cartoony. we have Spider-Man yanking down the trousers of Aleksei Sytsevich to reveal rhino-print boxers. We have a container of volatile capsules that narrates warning: Plutonium 238 is a radioactive material and is highly explosive. We have Spider-Man whistling his own theme song as he fights Aleksei (the theme song is also his ring tone). And all this just in the first

And all this just in the first Spider-Man-centric action sequence following the prologue featuring Peters parents. There's nothing wrong with a movie being fun, but here, it detracted from its dramatic moments (and it does get really dramatic towards the end.) Jamie Foxx's Electro was the "put upon dweeb to megalomaniacal supervillain who will 'make the hero pay'" that we've seen way too many times and there was barely enough time given to develop the relationship between Peter and Harry. Now, that's a relationship that's almost as important if not just as important as the one between Peter and Gwen, which did get a lot of attention. But Harry becoming a full-fledged supervillain in the same movie in which he's introduced was just way too rushed. The 3D was awesome though.

But they should have gotten rid of a good half hour (Dr. Kafka for starters).

Honestly? Pretty damn good.

Even though Spider-Man 3 left a bad taste in my mouth I gave The Amazing Spider-Man a try. But, i thought some parts were waaaaay too cheesy (he dunked from the 3 point line and no one questioned that?!) to actually like the movie overall. This movie saved the franchise in my mind.

...It was a mess. Garfield is a pleasure to watch as Spider-Man, Stone is solid as always as Gwen, and the last 30-45 minutes of the movie are absolutely amazing, intense, and emotional. Honestly, it's like they looked at the first film, took note of all of it's many flaws, and decided to fix that by going BIGGER with [link] MORE characters, MORE action, MORE subplots. And don't even get me started on that contrived subplot of Peter's parents' which literally took over the entire movie. The only reason Peter decided to tackle that issue head-on is because the writers made him. The only reason the writers made him do so is because they were directly responding to the complaints of having that subplot removed in the first film. The only reason they removed those scenes in the 1st place was because they were "saving" plot lines like that in order to pad out more sequels. Just...ugh.

I thought Amazing Spider Man 2 was a huge improvement over the first rebooted film, but it still had it's problems. Most of the characters didn't really feel well developed and everything just felt too rushed. Especially Peter and Harry's relationship which is one of the most vital aspects of Spider Man and is just as vital as any other relationship he has with any other character.

The cast did the best they could I guess with what they were given. The lone standouts being DeHaan and Stone.

And there were definitely a few scenes that reminded me of the same tone and quality of Batman and Robin with those being Dr. Kafka and Electro in every scene they were in. I mean Max was exactly the same type of villain Jim Carrey's Riddler was in Batman Forever.

I also don't see how they are going to successfully pull off a Sinister Six film when they can't even pull off a good Spider Man film. Hopefully they just scrap the idea.

Anyway, movie was disappointing, the story was rushed, characters were underdeveloped, and the cast was sorely misused. The only positives I can give about this film are the action scenes were much better this time around and nicely shot and the Spidey Suit looked terrific.

And I feel like the whole conspiracy of Peter's parents really isn't a big deal like the movies are making it out to be.

Raimi's original trilogy will always be the best Spider Man films and it's too bad we never got to see Raimi complete his story with Maguire with Spider Man 4 and 5. Instead we got this useless reboot.
