If they made a Hulk film based upon the version that is in The Avengers, I might actually have to see it. The Hulk is best surprise of the film.

Awesome action!

I want to give an 8/10, but for Whedon it's a little light on dramatic punch and feels a little too long. It's perfect for summer action madness, though.

besides Nolan's Batman (which does convey a nice job of emotion) this movie really did have heart and emotion. Maybe you were lost in the humor and fun of it all? But the Iron Man + Hulk scene = brilliance

@ Casketmouth- TDK is one of the most overrated films in the last decade. It was good, but not great, with some overwrought dialogue, one bad action scene, and add to that being a terrible sequel, and you are left with simply decent.

Watchman was better? I truly hope you read the comic to understand how the movie was. Yes...the movie was actually great (F U Synder haters) but it was never in contact with the context of the graphic novel. The intro was amazing, though, I will give it that. I love the movie but no....no movie will ever EVER convey the briallance of WATCHMEN

um no...it's nowhere near a good as film as TDK nor is it as profound as Watchmen. On everyscale of film making it's good, not GREAT. For anyone never having known a single comicbook character in their life would say that TDK is by far the better film. Way more themes and not a generic "transformers" type plot. The characters were GREAT and played off each other well, but it wasn't a GREAT fim, just a GREAT summer blockbuster if u catch my drift. It had a teeny bop feel at times and very

Hulk Smash!!

I saw it twice in the first few days, best Marvel film without a doubt and one of the best comic book films ever. It gave me the same feeling I got after seeing the first Superman film. Hulk and Iron Man are easily the best things in the film, on the second time of seeing it, you notice just how great the script is and that the film is pure Joss Whedon. I would love to be in the meeting when Joss starts discussing his contract and vision for the second film.

I'm always angry..... SMASH!

Watching this in IMAX 3D was amazing (although the 3D really wasn't too special) and so much fun and entertaining! This is what you call a summer blockbuster. Hulk owned everything! Most impressive were the character moments between all the avengers, making them more 3 dimensional in the process. Just damn good fun at the cinemas!

I thought it was a near perfect film. Joss is a brilliant writer. I do have one problem/complaint, more like confusion - I've put it in a reply as it is a semi-spoiler.

Cap never said "Avengers Assemble!" How can that line never be uttered in an Avengers movie. It's the international title. I'm just confused and baffled that it was never said and was overlooked.

Truly is a fun ride. A pure comic book movie. A good measure of how entertaining a film are, is how long it seems to be; and 2 hours went by in an instant.

Best movie of the year so far.

I saw the movie in 2D and loved it. The summer of 2012 begins with a BANG and the rest of the season movies "have met their match".

Making the blockbuster "The Avengers" into a masterpiece of entertainment, at the time it was announced, seemed impossible for me to achieve with such a high level of efficiency and art. Not even the news of Joss Whedon directing (which I'm familiar with since his "Buffy" times"), not even the actors cast, not even the most recent trailers, could have prepared

Making the blockbuster "The Avengers" into a masterpiece of entertainment, at the time it was announced, seemed impossible for me to achieve with such a high level of efficiency and art. Not even the news of Joss Whedon directing (which I'm familiar with since his "Buffy" times"), not even the actors cast, not even the most recent trailers, could have prepared me for HOW WELL this movie is made. I already knew it was gonna be good, but I wasn't expecting it to be THIS GOOD!

All the actors are at the top of their game. I won't stand out anyone, let's just say they're all excellent. From the main cast and even the secondary characters like agent Coulson or agent Hill. They're really good in this. And they all get their moments to shine, not only individually, but as a group. I didn't feel that one or the other got more "screen time" than the others, or that one was more important than the rest (speaking about the super-heroes). Each had its own relevance, contribuited to the group, and we can clearly feel that when the team finally bonds, "they're tough as nails". This is a rare feat when dealing with ensemble casts. I'm wondering if any other movie has achieved this level of balance with such a high calibre group of actors.

The script and the dialogs between characters, between the Avengers or between each one and Loki, are also spot-on. It's more than obvious the Whedon touch, who creates a tapestry of living words that sometimes goes beyond the "comic book" feel of the movie into something more (specifically the lines Loki delivers). And there's no shortage of humor: there are laugh out loud moments, funny moments that we weren't expecting, especially one very short scene between Thor and Hulk that takes but a blink of an eye. Oh, before I forget: if the trailers left you with a bitter taste of "Transformers" in your mouth, make no mistake: the action isn't, and by far, as robotic, tedious and souless like in those movies.

Regarding the technical aspects, there's not much to tell here. ILM delivers as usual and almost like no other. The art direction, the sound effects, the costumes are great. Alan Silvestri's score is more than competent.

In short, "The Avengers" reaches without a problem the title of best movie of 2012 so far, and it will surely be in many top ten lists when the year is done. It is a landmark of cinema and in its particular genre that, although different from other movies of the same quality ("Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight"), will absolutely not go unseen by lots and LOTS of people (fans and non-fans), and that we will remember like a "Hulk smash to the head": a 2h 20m punch that goes by so fast and that leaves me wanting much more. Joss Whedon had a gigantic task ahead of himself, and not only he delivers perfection, he may finally get the recognition he's been deserving for years: he's become the next great director not to miss. Welcome to the big league, Mr. Whedon! When will "The Avengers 2" be coming out, sir?

9/10 (which may well be a 9.5 or 10 after a second viewing)

I've said this so many times already on this site, but I'll just have to say it again. Avengers is AWESOME! As of today I have seen it five times (that's right), and it has been fun every single time. The chemistry between our fave heroes is very organic, Loki is a badass, visual-effects were insanely beautiful, acting was great, and every single character was given enough screentime and depth to make their presence worthwhile. This is the fastest 2hours and 20minutes you'll spend at the

I felt a little underwhelmed at the action choreography and the upbeat style that seemed to lack any sort of dark elements the comic books shed, but as all movies are flawed, this one did better than worse so I give it a solid 8/10. Not nearly the best Comic Book movie of all time but it's up there somewhere. I still prefer Batman Begins, TDK, and Watchmen.

"Lackluster roster of films?" I am sorry you don't enjoy fun, engaging films that don't insult their audience, but love films that feel the need to hammer the audience over the head with their themes/ messages by repeating them ad nasuem every 2 minutes for fear that the audience might forget that Bruce Wayne is afraid.

AMAZING!

It was WAY better than even my most optimistic or positive expectations! I wanted to buy another ticket and watch it again, right after I exited the cinema. This will definitely the benchmark for superhero movies, or even blockbusters in general, for many years to follow. It did have some shortcomings, but they definitely don't ruin the awesomeness in any way.

BTW, I don't think that it's fair to compare this movie to Dark Knight or TDKR, since, like I have said in a previous post, they

BTW, I don't think that it's fair to compare this movie to Dark Knight or TDKR, since, like I have said in a previous post, they might both feature and star superheros, but they take a VERY different approach on the subject. For me, that is like comparing ET to Alien or Predator, because they are movies with aliens in them.

Anyway, bottom line is, I LOVED The Avengers and it managed to thrill and excite me in a way that very few movies have been able to in the last few years. After this and Cabin In The Woods, I really gotta check out more stuff by this Joss Whedon fella.

It wasn't so much that I saw some things coming, but the fact that some things should have been explored a bit more. For example, our only explanation for how the hell Thor managed to get back to Earth, is just one line by Loki and that's it. In fact, although I'm not a Thor fan, I think that in terms of story and development, he got the shortest end of the stick BY FAR! They should have included a scene with Natalie Portman's character IMHO, I know that they explain her absence, but come on,

Granted, he had more urgent business to attend to, but couldn't he have done it after Loki's defeat? Now I know that she was pregnant when the movie was being filmed, but couldn't they have fit her in somehow? Also, they should have shed a bit more light on the whole Banner - Hulk "relationship". Now I know that about 30 minutes from the movie were cut for the theatrical version and according to JoBlo, they will be included in the DVD and BluRay release, so I think that most of the issues I had with The Avengers will be solved there. It's still awesome though and I will watch it again next week!

Shocked Myself

I went in knowing "ok these heroes will be on-screen together" but I smiled at every time they fought each other/fought together. I have not smiled at a movie in a few years, not joking. SPOILERS...Hulk stole a lot...Beating up Loki and punching Thor...It is now 3 am CA time and I work a double today. I am going to be smiling all day. The movie, seriously, was THAT FUCKING GREAT!

See it in 2D!

I loved it. It's the last time I'll pay to watch a film in 3D though - it was a distraction, at times making things look like little toys or miniatures during big set-pieces. I've never seen any of Wheedon's work before and I'm VERY impressed. He's made a film on the scale of Transformers that's witty with characters you care about. It's intelligent & has great action.

My only complaint was that MINOR SPOILER...it took place over what felt like 36 hours. The pacing of the movie was perfect, just felt like a lot of characters issues arose and mentalities shifted in a very short span of time. Nonetheless exceeded all expectations and completely worth the 4 year wait. THANK YOU JOSS!!!

Oh man, OH MAN! I haven't geeked-out in the theater that hard in FOREVER!

it was fun.

I didn't go with very hopes because I was burnt out by all the heavy advertising,merchandising,tv-spots etc.

And as a result didn't end up caring for any the characters that much because there was no sense of danger.

Oh and I saw it in 3D, which didn't impress me that much because the action-scenes looked like as though some kid was playing with action-figures and then digitally erased in post.

Is it the greatest comic-book movie ever? I'll wait for TDKR to come out and only then will

Otherwise it wasn't a bad movie because it didn't take itself too seriously and it worked. My favourite (yet cringe-worthy) moment being when Banner was asking why he was being picked to be in the team and Black Widow answers (paraphrased)"because nobody has a better understanding of gamma-rays than you"

Whedon brings his trademark experience with ensembles and adds his own style to our group of heroes. He gives each member of the team their own quiet moments of growth to go along with their shining moments of action. There were a couple of lines here and there that felt a bit forced but the movie never suffers due to the chemistry of our heroes. They came together like a perfect match and played off of one another in the funniest ways possible, making the buildup and formation of the group just as good as the climactic battle in the end. These actors could spit out words from the worst script on the planet and make it sound good, but thankfully they were working with bits of dialogue that were plucked from the mind of Joss Whedon. His script and the interactions and one liners were the reason this movie felt like the truest adaptation of a comic book ever put on screen. Each one of The Avengers is fleshed out even further in this movie where they each have their own personal problems and character arcs that they must overcome... some bigger than others, but all equally as satisfying.

You know those moments in superhero movies where the entire audience hoots and hollers and you go "HOLY FUCK DID THAT JUST HAPPEN?! THAT JUST HAPPENED!!".. yeah.. this movie has 13 of those.

I'd like to write more and go on and on about the film, but I don't think my words could ever do this masterpiece justice. Whedon is a God. And DEFINITELY not a puny one!

It was the best of the Marvel movies to date. The Hulk stole the show, and the villain reveal after the first set of credits was awesome.

Better be careful. Some people around these parts might consider what you said at the end of your post a spoiler. But I agree, all the comic geeks in the crowd were roaring leaving regular non-readers confused at what the yelling was about.

Awesome. Way better than I expected. The original trailer looked a little hokey but this went above and beyond. They did a great job.

Unoriginal, forgettable, childish, I could continue with negative connotations but I'm truly trying to understand the appeal of this film. Batman & Robin of Summer 2012. 6/10

Are you sure you saw the same movie as everyone else? Batman & Robin, are you kidding me? Nobody said this movie was going to be a psychological thriller. It was meant to be fun, entertaining, witty, and an all-out superhero extravaganza. It achieved that, and it delivered in a solid way. I'm kinda sad you missed out on enjoying a really, really awesome superhero flick.

If you don't understand the appeal then you probably were not a fan to begin with. Nothing wrong with that but you've got to be blind if you don't see some of the appeal. Your comparison to Batman & Robin is way off base. Sounds like hate for hates sake.

Dispite my shortcomings it still doesn't excuse a bloated boring film being overly hyped . Nothing snaps or propels the story forward beyond shoddy CGI and lazy camera setups.

See it in 2D!

Everyone listen to Captain Thorpe. He is not lying in regards to the 3D. It blew hard, for me it was just way to dark and I could barely make out anything with those damn glasses.

This was a great action/superhero film. Period. Team movies like this deal with big battles and big characters. Of course films like this wont be as engaging as Dark Knight or Watchmen. I think people are forgetting that this is a spectacle movie here! I want to see these characters done right and fight something Earth threatening. I saw it in Avengers. The characters were true to the comics and the interaction with them was handled perfectly. The music was good, the comedy was well timed and

I cannot fathom why someone would not like this film unless they truly do not enjoy superhero flicks, which is a valid opinion, but if that is the case, why are you going to see this? This film is all about fun; excitement and seeing beloved characters come to life on the big screen in one epic battle. I cannot see what more someone would want from this film. It succeeds in all it sets out to succeed in. I highly enjoyed it!

Good Stuff...

Just got back from the theater. I must say that I was rather impressed at this movie. A lot of stuff going on here and it was a fanboys dream. I won't give much away, however I will say that IMO there was a little too much "soliloquying" going on for my tastes (I automatically thought of Syndrome's comments in the "Incredibles"). Also, I really think the 3D was wasted.

BTW...the Hulk was perfect.

At least a frickin' 8.5 out of 10!

Saw It At IMAX

I saw it at the IMAX midnight screening, and while I can't vouch for regular 3D, the IMAX 3D was great. The movie was fantastic, and I can't imagine much that'll be able to surpass it ("Promethus" might be able to). The cast worked very well together, especially Ruffalo as Banner/ Hulk; they really nailed the character here. The action looked good, and was very exciting. The special effects were top notch. 10/10

Overall, I thought it was the perfect summer movie. I'd still reserve The Dark Knight for best comic book film ever, but The Avengers is way up there. I did have a few issues. The film was a little long, and the beginning dragged a bit. It felt like I kept waiting and waiting for The Avengers to all finally get together. I was also disappointed with how Hawkeye's character was treated early on. That guy really doesn't get enough love. But overall, very exciting, entertaining, and well made.

Hell Yeah!!!

Excellent, worth the wait, and just plain awesome. I saw it in IMAX 3-D, and it definitely worked. Scarlette Johannson's a$$ in glorious 3-D alone was worth the price of admission...

Beyond that, funny, exciting, compelling, well done!!!

Saw the 12:20am showing

I got home around 3am. Was so worth it! Want to see a few more times. There were so many moments I missed because either the audience (myself included) were laughing or reacting to something that happened on screen. Will recommend to anyone. Stay after the mid-credits scene .

Fun flick

Love this movie, the fact everyone had their moment to shine and it wasn't Iron Man and the Avengers made this even more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Also I don't think any movie made me want to eat something afterwards, but damn it if I didn't want shawarma after the movie was over.

Saw it last night and loved it!! I was particularly pleased with how they used Hawkeye. It was a brilliant move by Joss to give him ample screen time amongst all the other A listers on the roster. Loki was awesome and I enjoyed Evans much more in this one than I did in Capt America.

I think some people here are missing the point. Avengers never set out to be like TDK or TDKR. They never said it was going to be the new Fight Club. Comparing this to TDKR (which is my most anticipated movie this year) isn't even logical. They're completely different genres of film despite the fact that they have comic characters in them. As a pure superhero flick, Avengers is balls-out awesome! TDKR will be balls-out awesome as well, but that doesn't mean Avengers will suddenly be any less

They'll both be awesome in their own way. It's like there's an abundance of awesome to go around, and some people just don't seem to get that. Stop getting butthurt when we say Avengers is awesome. Your precious Prometheus (another film I can't wait for) and TDKR are safe. Contrary to popular belief, all these films can and will coexist peacefully together. I'm sorry some of you didn't enjoy Avengers. I truly respect your opinions, but man oh man did you miss out on enjoying an incredibly fun time at the movies.

I am almost completely in awe at what The Avengers accomplished. A coherent, near-seamless joining of all these big, individually franchise worthy characters. With perfect interactions between all of them. From the almost easy friendship that develops between Stark & Banner to the Clarice Starling/Hannibal Lecter dynamic between Black Widow & Loki. Joss Whedon's dialog flows effortlessly and evenly. And Alan Silvestri's dynamite, thunderous score bestows instant classic status upon the movie.

And oh yeah it has basically 80 minutes of pure superhero action. Clear, well-storyboarded cinematic action. Not a shaky cam or excessive close-up in sight. With the last 40 minutes a Lord of the Rings worthy War in the streets of Manhattan. Its the Battle of Endor, but with Superheroes instead of Ewoks.

And finally, and this speaks to the whole 'Nerds Shall Inherit The Earth Angle' I'm amazed at how many Marvel Universe elements are now established on film. Asgard, Hydra, SHIELD, Helicarriers, the Cosmic Cube, Avengers Tower, and the motherflippin' Chitauri. Things that people who only watch superhero movies and not comics would previously stare at you blankly if you mentioned to them.

Its a fine time to be a nerd ladies & gentlemen.

At the very end of Norton's Incredible Hulk its established that Banner can control Hulk if he concentrates. But when he goes Hulk on the Helicarrier, thats him having lost control (result from the explosion and Loki's manipulations.)

I saw it coming, I have to admit. There had to be a 'skin the cat' moment for Loki. Something that said 'he's evil, these are the stakes, and we all have to join together to stop him.'

As such it only makes story-telling sense that they kill off the one (immensely likable) character who has no basis in the comics, but already had served to tie together these characters from his appearances in Iron Man & Thor.

I gotta say, when he went down, you've never heard an entire theater go

That did hurt, I gotta say. Part of me was hoping he'd show up in a 'SHIELD movie' centered around Nick Fury, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Maria Hill.

Mark was great as Hulk, ScarJo' assets was fantastic in IMAX 3D, the pop culture references was funny and the climactic battle was mind blowing! Shit....I even rooted for Loki cause he was bad ass this time around!

Mark was great as Hulk, ScarJo' assets was fantastic in IMAX 3D, the pop culture references was funny and the climactic battle was mind blowing! Shit....I even rooted for Loki cause he was bad ass this time around!

Easily, Most Fun I Have Had

this was totally worth the 4 year wait. Ruffalo completely won me over the minute I saw him on screen, and his Hulk, whoa. When the movie was over, I literally felt like an hour went by. I cannot recommend this enough. Also, I am dying to see a new Cap movie.

I know right?! I loved how Norton handled the part of Bruce Banner and hated the fact that he had to be dropped, but for some reason the transition to Ruffalo seemed seamless and almost sort-of genius. I seriously can't wait for the next solo flicks for all these heroes, and I can't wait to see what clever cameos they plan for each of them. A lil' Banner in Iron Man 3 would be nice, and a lil' nod to Captain America in a new Hulk movie would be pretty damn awesome.

Just Right

The comparisons to TDK are both feeble and pointless. This wasn't trying to be that, and if it had it would have been ridiculous. This film took just the right approach. Epic, but not too serious about itself. If you had gone the ever popular "dark and gritty" approach with this it would have been absurd. It's OK to have fun. Just relax. We will have TDKR for all of our existential crisis needs later in the summer. I'm not saying this was a perfect movie (just very good), but the tone it struck

Whedon deserves all the credit in the world for that. I can't think of many other filmmakers that would have been capable of it. Well done!

My only bitch is Hawkeye. I don't know why Renner took this part. It was a next to nothing part and he is arguably the second biggest star in the thing. He was criminally under used and its a shame. They must have cut him a huge check to be in this.

You couldn't have seen THE AVENGERS because like polarboy said, Hawkeye had a pivotal role in the film. He had lots of screen time and was BadAss.

Exactly. I don't understand the need for everything to be heavy and borderline depressing for some people. I love TDK, it's up there in my Top 5, but I would have hated it if every superhero movie turned out to be dark and so cerebral. I disagree with your Hawkeye sentiment though. He played a pivotal part in the movie and was a major badass. I loved it, and thought Whedon had cast the perfect person for the role.

best scene of the movie, loved it. Stark telling Banner how his 'curse' might be a gift = brilliance.

The Hulk stole the show for me...so much so that I now want a Ruffalo standalone hulk movie. The action was handled quite well and I really like Loki's character. Other than that, another bland, albeit ambitious notch in Marvels belt.

The problem with something like this is that because there is so much hype about it, it's unfair to those who weren't as in love with it as others. They can't voice their true opinion and say what they honestly thought about it without a bunch of people jumping down their throats barraging them that they didn't love it as they did. I honestly thought it was pretty good but nothing great. The final action scene was cool but everything before was alright. It was too slow at points and just didn't

It was too slow at points and just didn't leave me with much emotion afterwards. But I guess that isn't good enough? Should I just say I love it because everyone else does? I've read some of the comments of people saying that they didn't care for it and the result was people overreacting because they didn't give it a perfect 10. I'm not afraid to voice my honest opinion and say that this was alright. Not at all the best superhero movie of all time but I still enjoyed it.

Loved It! I've seen the Avengers twice already and can honestly go for a couple more viewings. It's crazy that this movie exceeded all my expectations that were already set pretty high. I came out of this wanting Avengers 2, the individual hero sequels and the standalone SHIELD/Black Widow & Hawkeye movies. Joss Whedon really stepped it up and I hope this sets a trend of action movies that have a brain.

Great but not GREAT

Thor and Loki were SOOO poorly handled. Thor and Loki were 2-dimensionalized to such an extreme. There was no where near enough dialogue and too much unnecessary action. We got no where near enough character moments. The first half dragged on so much. It would have been so easy to create great tension and purpose with Thor if they switched out the mindcontrolled dude from Thor with Jane Foster.

Mark Ruffallo was AMAZING though. Better than Edward Norton ever was (never thought I would think

Mark Ruffallo was AMAZING though. Better than Edward Norton ever was (never thought I would think that). He stole every scene.

the problem is that it doesnt follow Thor the film at all. Loki left at such an amazing place in Thor. He was vulnerable and looking to prove himself. It was a search for greatness. He felt cheated from the worthy being he was raise...
Loki's "development" is all implied. We see none of the actual depth, it just can be assumed there is reasoning. He never has any moment where we can see him be more than "that villain."

Natalie Portman is HUGELY IMPORTANT to the Thor storyline. His entire connection to humanity has grown out of (and is a result of) her. She sees him for something more than a strong man. She is the first person to make him show what it means to be human. He makes a connection with something that is only because of who he is. He doesnt have to be a god or a prefit role around her. Sure, Loki and Thor are brothers. BUT IT IS NEVER REALLY USED AS A VEHICLE FOR TENSION. One small section of dialogue addresses this and then it is pretty much underused at best.

What I am saying, this movie needed more. It had all the right stuff, but more time SHOULD have been spent on character depth and moments. But unfortunately unnecessary action scenes that led to nothing (anytime a hero fights a hero) took up that time instead.

It was so close to being great, but there was just enough dialogue missing to make the movie be missing important moments. That being said, Hulk was simply amazing. Better than he has ever ever been. Mark Ruffalo blew me away with his performance. The chemistry was strong. The last half was fantastic...it needed that special character focus that Serenity had.

Sure, characters cant have 100% focus, but they can be balanced better(see any other Joss Whedon show/movie)

It was fantastic. Joss Whedon was the right person to put this together. A lot was lifted from the Ultimates and Ultimates 2, which is the tone they've been trying to set from the start with these movies. A great culmination of the Marvel movies, and a nice close to chapter one. Looking forward to chapter 2 starting with Iron Man 3 next year! 9/10.

I thought Stark was better and more interesting in this than in either of the Iron Man movies, especially when he got to play off of Cap and Banner. I also liked the character development of Stark. He really changed by the end, kind of like how Han Solo changed at the end of the first Star Wars and decided to go back and help Luke destroy the Death Star.

I don't know if Stark changed so much. He's just as noble, selfless and heroic as he was by the end of Iron Man & Iron Man 2. But the movie is instead an exploration of why he has so few friends. His brash arrogance is a defense mechanism that prevents people from getting too close. So when thrown together with people he hardly knows, he's more of a dick than he is towards Rhodey, Pepper, & Happy. So where he is at the end of the flick is having opened up enough to let the other Avengers in

This movie could have gone south so easily. But it didn't. It was a SOLID movie with a little bit of everything for everyone. The inclusion of a certain someone at the end just made it that much better. I am pumped to see it again and will certainly buy it on B-ray

Avengers

I thought it was pretty good. Had some problems with it out. For a movie that was being hyped for the last 4 years, it should have been amazing. But the first half of the movie was rather dull, things didn't really pick up until The Hulk showed up. The story was pretty ho-hum, but the character stuff was good. Also sucks that they choose a less than cinematic 1.85:1 aspect ratio for the film. Not really a big deal, but the aspect ratio should have been the same as the other movies leading into

I'm still in utter shock over this movie. Everything came together so perfectly. It was fun, engaging, action packed, and everything else you could want from a super hero movie. My face still hurts from smiling so much. There's just no better way to put it, but an action movie masterpiece.

$200 million?!!!!

Phenomenal. Seen it 3 times, and plan on seeing it once more in theaters. Pacing, action and dialogue was tremendous. The Hulk was THE HULK! Cap really did come off as the leader, which was the proper way to play it. Everyone loves IM and what RDJ has brought to that role, but Cap is the true leader of the Avengers. His take charge attitude and leading without barking out orders really made me enjoy Evans more in this movie than in CATFA.

Congrats to all who worked on this film, and hoping

Solid story, emotion, pacing, great direction and respect for the source material from all involved.

Awesome!

I thought it was awesome! To see all those movies culminate in one epic film is something that I don't think will ever happen again (unless a Justice League movie comes along), so this was a special occasion and one that was just... awesome.

I still think Thor is my favorite Marvel movie, but this is a clooose second :)

Better than I even expected..

There were a lot of folks, some on this very site, that said that this movie couldn't be made. I thought the whole thing was quality from top to bottom.
The only thing I could be critical about was the somewhat slow beginning. The stuff with SHIELD will probably try most casual moviegoer's patience.
Otherwise, a very solid comic action movie, with humor, heart and tons of action. The money they spent really shows on the screen.
Also, Renner killed it as Hawkeye. I'm surprised no ones

I'm surprised no ones talking about giving him his own set of movies yet.

I don't want to troll by posting so much here, but I just read that The Avengers broke the all-time weekend opening record, and just had to post and say "Well done, Mr.Whedon! Well done, Marvel. And well done, Avengers!" This movie deserves every good thing going for it.

What can I say that hasn't already been said?

I Loved the SHIT out of it! Thank Mr. Whedon and Marvel.

How amazing is it that we get a great Avengers movie, a probable great Batman movie, and hopefully a good Spider-Man film all in the same summer??? It's damn great to be a comic fan this year. Life is good.

Good, really good, just not great...

Glad it won the weekend. It certainly deserved to make all that money, and it certainly ensures the Marvel film universe is here to stay, which is great.

That said, I did have a few problems with the movie. Now, before y'all start flaming me, hear me out. I didn't hate the movie by any stretch of imagination. There was a lot of great stuff in there. Wonderful character moments. Great set pieces. I just didn't love it. Merely, I just liked it. The real problem for me was that I felt there was

The real problem for me was that I felt there was too much action for action's sake at the expense of following a meatier plot.

Alright, now that I have your Avenger's underoos all twisted in bunches, what did you think?

Same response from my reply above, but I feel it's suited to both situations- I respect your opinion, but I do think one of the best aspects of the film is how all the other films character development/ arcs are brought along here, and that the reason they need to team is because of how much larger the impact of what is causing the action is going to have. Thus a simple story for, because it'd need to be a huge threat to get them to team up in the first place.

Your opinion, and I respect that. I honestly didn't think there was too much action in this film. Just enough, and probably more combined action then in all 5 Marvel Studio movies combined. I think what helped balance it out was the great pacing, dialogue and character interaction. Not too mention a top notch villainous performance from Hiddleston. There are definitely action movies that are long on action and short on story. Fortunately I don't think Avengers was one of them. That's just one

I miss superman the movie

It seems all big budgets movies are going the same way now, huge explosions mindless action no sense of real danger for our heros, no emotional attachment to those on screen. special effects should have made movies better, they just made them prettier to look at. watch superman the movie from 1978 see how you can make a top flight movie with a soul. please hollywood give us a story with the action and reclaim your soul.

Awesome awesome awesone on every level. My only (minimal) gripes would be that Loki was a good villain but he was a tad "Whiny" at times, and there were many a scene when it felt like "Iron man and the
other guys" but that was easily forgivable because it always felt that they all needed each other. Acting was all solid, effects were great (The Hulk steals every scene he's in) and as large as the film was, nothing felt over done (MIchael Bay, take note) Leaps and bounds better then I

Hulk stole the movie. I wasn't sure he would work as part of the team, but he was awesome. Whedon really knew how to use him well, unlike the two Hulk movies.

Battles in the end were fantastic, but things dragged at times before that. They could have easily cut 30 minutes.

I'd put this in the 2nd tier of comic book movies alongside the Iron Man movies, Thor, Watchmen, and the first X-Men, but behind Batman '89, Superman '78, and X-Men 2.

I'm happy that Whedon has such a gigantic hit on

Spoilers (obviously)...

Great movie...I'll list the things that did NOT work first, as that list is short (but important):

1) The name, motivation and background on the alien army that Loki was working with was an unintelligible garbage pile.

2) Captain America's arm should've been shattered, even if his shield survived, when he used the shield to stop Thor's hammer.

3) I hate the change to Hulk mythology that he can just "turn it on" when he likes.

4) Really, really, really hated killing off Coulson.

Other than that, the movie works well, with the right amount of character development, action and humor.

The only thing that made me scratch my head was when Iron Man was falling and The rest of the Avengers just watched. I was waiting for Thor to fly up and catch him, or Captain America to tell Thor to fly up and catch him. Instead they seemed content to let him fall, and it was the Hulk (Who'd just as soon smash the Avengers) saving him. I agree about Couylson, but that is trademark Whedon. Expect that in anything he writes.

The only thing I agree with is the Hulk part. I absolutely loved the Hulk in this flick, but I couldn't understand how he went from being a mindless monster to suddenly being a faithful ally. And yes, Banner should have some lack of control in order to make Banner, well, Banner. But these are just tiny lil' things, and not enough to be turned into a beef or anything.

Good movie

The in-fighting helped establish that none of these people were wimps: Thor versus Iron Man, Cap and the Hulk and the Black Widow versus the Hulk and Hawkeye. Oh and all six of them (eight if you include Fury and Coulson) had a crack at Loki. Could you imagine Ant Man going up alone against Loki, Thor or the Hulk? *squish*

So the next movie will feature Thanos? It might take a while for them to put the script together for this. The original Thanos storyline in the comics introduced the

So the next movie will feature Thanos? It might take a while for them to put the script together for this. The original Thanos storyline in the comics introduced the Cosmic Cube but I don't think we want to have the next movie be all about the Cosmic Cube again.

One possibility is that they could move ahead with an Ant Man movie and have Ultron the villain in Avengers 2 and save Thanos for Avengers 3. Seriously, when Return of the Jedi had a new Death Satr people didn't complain because they had Empire Strikes Back in the meantime. Similarly I don't think people will complain about the Dark Knight Rises continuining the League of Shadows storyline from Batman Begins because we had The Dark Knight in the meantime. So they could bring back the Cosmic Cube in Avengers 3 and avoid giving people the impression that the Avenegrs doesn't have any other stories to tell.

I have to say I also enjoyed X-Men First Class though: seeing the origins of the Beast, Havok, Banshee, Mystique, Xavier and Magneto worked for me. People complained about not seeing Cyclops and Marvel Girl but if First Class 2 takes place some time after First Class then Cyclops and Marvel Girl can be added as new recruits. The same logic can be applied to Ant Man and the Wasp: even though I haven't seen anybody complaining (anymore) abouty Ant Man and the Wasp not being in the movie, there's still the possibility for them to be in Avengers 2.

Sucks that I'm gonna get a million negative responses just for voicing my opinion but I honestly didn't think this movie was that good. It was decent but nothing better than mediocre. I'm a fan of Whedon and I think this is one of his weaker efforts.

There was ZERO plot. And don't tell me its "Loki comes to Earth and..." because that is just the basis. There was nothing that tied scenes together. It was all over the place and felt like they made it up as they went. Not to mention that

It was all over the place and felt like they made it up as they went. Not to mention that NOTHING happened in the first half of the film. Sorry but wasn't everybody already recruited to this team? Wasn't that the point of the last 6 movies? So why did we waste an hour on getting them together? They should have already been a team and BAM first scene the Loki and the aliens show up to cause shit. I know they wanted to build characters in the beginning but there's a problem with that.....

There was NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! Can anyone describe to me one of the character's arcs? How bout any changes they go through? I felt nothing for these characters. Sure their interactions were entertaining but that does not equal character development.

Why do we not get any backstory on Loki's alien army (Skrulls???). I know they gave a brief explanation but I don't understand why these guys would follow Loki and I certainly don't know what their motive is. They were simply there to be non human enemies for the team to kill. Lame. Loki was alright but nothing different than what we saw him do in Thor. Kind of a lame cop out to reuse him.

I wend into this movie with lowered expectations but I thought I would enjoy it more than I did. It was all just very bland and emotionless. I felt nothing for any of the characters in the film. Sorry was I suppose to care about Hawkeye being evil when we never got a chance to even interact with him before he got turned? Terrible. The only good part about the film was Hulk. He was a beast!

Well thought out points there. When someone can write as intelligently as that about why they disliked something, they deserve a huge thumbs up.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I too didn't feel like much of anything really happened, and felt a huge, gaping hole in the character development area.

My biggest complaint was that it just felt like there were too many instances of action for the sake of action, and not action that also moves the plot forward, because, as you pointed out,

This isn't to say I want every single movie to be a thinker, it's more to say I expect a little more from Whedon and co.

Keep fighting the good fight Buck, and never back down from your opinion just because it feels like everyone else is madly in love with this movie.

Yeah the plot was weak, but it wasn't dumb or overly complicated, just simple and to the point. And the point of the characters and movie was to get these guys together, it starts with them all fighting over petty personallity differences. But all that is set aside and they become friends for the greater good. Add humor, acting, and amazing effects. You get a great superhero movie.
