What did you think of...The Expendables 2?

08.18.2012

There were 5 huge "geek out!" movies that opened this summer, all of which we covered the shit out of on this site, including THE AVENGERS, PROMETHEUS, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and most recently, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, but THE EXPENDABLES 2 had a soft spot in my heart, mostly because many of these dudes were actors whose movies I grew up with, and who I'm happy to see still kickin' ass today! (along with the newer stars alongside them) To that end, we've already posted Chris Bumbray's 7/10 review HERE (although he clearly says that "If you’re a fan of any of the icons in the cast (who isn’t?), this is for you.") and the Arrow's enthusiastic recommendation HERE.

We also interviewed many in the cast including director Simon West, as well as stars Terry Crews & Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren (Dragoooo!!!) and Jason Statham! Oh and don't forget about our TOP 10 lists counting down the best movies from Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Willis, and another one for the rest of the awesome action cast. Yes, it was an Expendables week here on JoBlo.com and we wouldn't have it any other way.

But now it's your turn!

Please feel free to POST YOUR OWN REVIEWS in our strike back section below (or to your MFC profile) and we'll continue to update the Rotten Tomatoes and Movie Fan Central reviews over the next few days as well.

Rotten Tomatoes: 69 reviews, avg score: 65%
Movie Fan Central
: 14 reviews, avg score: 7.3/10

PS: Don't forget to join us for our EXPENDABLES chat this Sunday at 7pm EST!

low expectations don't mean a thing

this film sucks...the action didn't even hold this crappy film together for me
terrible dialogue that wasn't funny and a story that's as slow as There Will Be Blood, a slow story works for a film like that but not an action film.
I loved the first one but this film just sucks balls

The final fight between Van Damme and Stallone was worth the price of admission by itself, but the movie had a ton of other great things going on as well. Expendables 2 was overall a great time at the movies, and I'm already counting down the days to Expendables 3.

Overall I liked it a lot better than the first, but the whole movie pretty much led up to the last 15 min, whitch was by far the best part of the movie and gave me what I paid for. I didn't like how they made Dolph's character so stupid, and Crews and Cotoure shouldn't have even been there. Plus the Maggie character was annoying. But I loved seeing Norris, Schwarzenegger and Willis go all out together. I wish they did the same thing with Van Damme as they did with Dolph and bring him back

Maybe in the next movie Van Damme can come back as his own twin and join them? Sure, it'd be stupid, but it's not like the franchise isn't already loaded with in jokes. And more JCVD is always good.

arguably the great thing every captured on cinema.

terrible dialogue, bad puns, weak plot, unparalleled cheese, gratuitous violence. FLAWLESS.

Loved it! Not ashamed to admit that this movie totally kicked my ass. Even Norris (of whom I'm usually not a fan--sorry) was entertaining. Overall less story driven than the first one, if you can believe it. Funnier, too. Dolph Lundgren and JCVD were my favorite in it, closely followed by Arnie. Highly recommended, if you're into this sort of thing.

It was ok

i'd give it about a 6-7... but there is something to be said about seeing all of these guys in one film...

Quite a bit better than Expendables 2. This one was more leaner and focused, rather than try to juggle too many subplots at the same time like in 1. All the meta-humor was great and kept things fresh in the middle act. Last but not least, the action delivered. For once, there was none of that shaky-cam-quick-cut crap, we get to see the carnage in all its glory! The only issues was Jet Li's cameo role. He was so bad-ass in the opening, and then he just leaves! Also, the final fight was

Fantastic.
The action was first rate, the self depreciating humor was brilliant, Arnie's response to when he sees Chuck Norris was funny. And Van Damme plays an excellent villian.
All in all streets ahead of the original.

Expendables 3? bring it on.

Blew Me Away

As the 80's action junkie I am... this made me smile from beginning to end. Sure some of the characters coulda got more screen time, but that's gonna happen when you're marketing a movie with Stallone, Statham, Li, Lundgren. Crews, Couture, JCVD, Arnold, Bruce Willis, and Chuck Norris. Dolph was hilarious this time around, liked him far more like this than as the villain (though I loved him in part 1 too). JCVD really could still be in theatres more if he chose to dedicate himself to roles like this and obviously JCVD. Loved it from start to finish. Over the top action. Terrible one liners. Melodrama, and I mean all this in the greatest way. It's funny how the same reasons I love it are the same reasons the people that gave it negative reviews hate it. What were they expecting?!?!

It was alright, it was better than the first and did a good job of capturing the feel of good old-fashioned 80s-early 90s action flicks, better put-together and packaged nicer. I was not a fan of the inclusion of the Maggie character though, Yu Nan's screen presence just felt grating and it felt like she was very forced into the story. I wish we saw more of Jet Li's Yin Yang in her place. Also, I think they may have gotten a wee bit carried away with the nostalgic cameos. Still, a good time to

Still, a good time to be had and there is a lot of joy to be found in seeing Stallone, Willis and Schwarzenegger walking forwards in a row, firing their guns and decimating scores of mooks, and even though Van Damme's Jean Vilain wasn't written to be especially memorable, his performance sure kicked ass. I'm gonna see this again today anyway so yeah, I think despite what my "movie critic" side of my brain is telling me, I still loved it.

It was fantastic, and just plain fun. Everything from the action to the story to the characters were better this time around. The fight scenes were really well shot. I was grinning from start to finish with all the funny dialouge and coolness on screeen from seeing these action icons do what they do best. By only complaint is that some characters don't get enough screen time (especially one who disappears after the opening sequence), but other than that I loved it.

It was everything I wanted Expendables 2 to be.

Man did this movie ever rock it! I swear, I felt like a kid again seeing all of these legends on screen. Chuck Norris' entrance more than lived up to his "Facts" reputation. I honestly can't wait for the JoBlo Sunday Night Movie Chat because if there's one movie that deserves to be discussed at length, this is definitely it! I guarantee it will be one hell of a great chat!

A plot point from Dark Knight Rises is mentioned in this review, so take care..

So I watched it today.

It was fucking incredible fun. Superior to the original in almost every way. Obviously not the best movie ever made, neither is it the best action movie in the world, but it IS enjoyable as heck and the cartoony camp factor goes into over-drive by the time the credits roll (much to the film's advantage). The original film seemed to take itself a tad too seriously considering the premise (enjoyable enough at times, but very po-faced), but with this one having larger

Obviously not the best movie ever made, neither is it the best action movie in the world, but it IS enjoyable as heck and the cartoony camp factor goes into over-drive by the time the credits roll (much to the film's advantage). The original film seemed to take itself a tad too seriously considering the premise (enjoyable enough at times, but very po-faced), but with this one having larger parts for the Schwarzenegger's, Bruce Willis' and Chuck Norris' of the world, they've decided to relax with it a bit and just have some genuine, crowd pleasing, awful one-liner spewing, self-referential fun with it all.

The opening 15 minutes pretty much blows away the first movie. The humour is ratcheted up (Dolph Lundgren somehow threatens to steal the show a whole bunch of times), they've actually attempted some genuine continuity from the previous entry which I was pleasantly surprised about (more-so the Director's Cut than the Theatrical). And throughout it all also manage to somehow give the film a bit more heart and characterisation even though it's crammed with four or five more big name actors parodying it up whenever they can. JCVD plays an excellent villain and should have done it more often (the guy is naturally a slimeball) and when Bruce, Arnie and Sly are sharing screentime Bruce is always a step away from utterly breaking character and falling apart in laughter, but in the context of the movie it just feels OK.

It's the movie the first one should've been, I actively enjoyed this more than I enjoyed bloody Batman. Mainly because the heroes got more than half an hour screen-time being heroes, and didn't spend forty straight minutes of the movie lying down in a hole in the ground (actually they actively spend about 2 minutes lying down in a hole in the ground)

*SPOILERS* Expanding on a review I posted the other day...

This is what the first Expendables should have been! Some really fun scenes and cool characters, with no shaky-cam or crappy editing. The intro is brilliant, although it's disappointing we don't get to see Arnie use the big gun he's given... he just disappears! I thought the Stateside scenes were interesting. Okay, those scenes were an obvious build-up for the death of one of the characters, but I enjoyed the way the team interacted - particularly when Bruce Willis sends Stallone off on his
This is what the first Expendables should have been! Some really fun scenes and cool characters, with no shaky-cam or crappy editing. The intro is brilliant, although it's disappointing we don't get to see Arnie use the big gun he's given... he just disappears! I thought the Stateside scenes were interesting. Okay, those scenes were an obvious build-up for the death of one of the characters, but I enjoyed the way the team interacted - particularly when Bruce Willis sends Stallone off on his mission. After the first meeting with Van Damme it gets a bit patchy and muddled until the final confrontation. There are a few important moments that don't make any sense: for example, where the hell does Chuck Norris come from? Where's Van Damme's character when the plane is crashed into the mine? I was also confused about how the team arrived at the airport. Anyway... Bruce Willis steals his scenes with Sly & Arnie - the guy oozes charisma. Arnie's acting is a bit rusty, but you can see he's having fun - and dialogue isn't the film's strong point anyway. The fact that none of the guys deliver their trademark "bullshit", "fuck you", "stop being such a pussy" etc. etc. tells me it was prob shot as a PG-13, but there are a couple of really brutal moments & the buckets of CG blood often look convincing. I thought Van Damme was brilliant as the villain, with his sadistic smile after killing one of the team - but he wasn't given enough to do. The final fight shows just how good of an actor he is now. Lundgren, Adkins and - surprisingly - Chuck Norris were all great too. Shame it was bogged down with too many characters. I thought Couture and Crews were good, but their characters weren't necessary to the plot at all. Now, I'm a child of the 80s and saw this movie through nostalgic eyes, therefore I'm able to forgive the shortcomings, but I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that won't be so forgiving. Here's hoping Expendables 3 is the best of the lot.
