What did you think of...The Expendables 3?

08.15.2014

The third entry in the old-school action star franchise is now upon us and they've got some new young whippersnappers along for the ride as well as a very lenient PG-13 rating. Sylvester Stallone returns as Barney Ross, bringing along the same team from the last installment (minus Bruce Willis) and adding some seasoned vets (Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, and Antonio Banderas among them) and some young guns (including Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, and Glen Powell) as well as an all-new high-profile villain in the form of Mel Gibson. Director Patrick Hughes leads the directing charge to what most are finding to be yet another silly entry in the series, albeit a fun one. It's definitely a silly affair, but full of charm and some really fun moments, which is echoed in Eric Walkuski's 7/10 review as well as my own from the premiere. You can check out our set visit coverage here as well as an interview with Snipes and Banderas here. Click the image below to see our exclusive interviews, clips, featurettes, trailers, and more!

Now that you've seen the third outing for yourself, we want to hear what YOU thought of it! You can POST YOUR OWN REVIEW of the film in the below strikebacks or on your own Movie Fan Central profile. Was it a fun cheesy romp or did it fall flat on its face? Did these guys justify yet another sequel or is this a sounding horn to call it quits? Let us know your thoughts below!

No interest. The first one was a novelty, the second was a cash-in,... well, my interest in the third, waned when there was a third announced. I will watch it though, and most likely enjoy it, for what it's worth.

Most fun of the 3

I tire of all the backlash from some. No matter, I grew up in the 80's and know fully what to expect from these films. They are fun and they do a decent job to mix all the ingredients so have in this smorgasbord (sp) of a stew. Each character played to the style they were known for and a homage paid to their reputations. Therefore, what's not to like in my opinion. Also, I could give a shit less if it was filmed by an amateur. These guys are basically documenting one big fraternity reunion,

I thought Expendables 3 was a blast. The direction was a tad poor on some of the action scenes (a lot of quick cuts), but for the most part it was a good film. It's a shame that the movie is only predicted to finish with 70 million domestically after everything, because it was really good.

It was a lot of fun. I liked Expendables 2 a lot better, but part 3 was still good. I really wish more people would have gone and seen it this weekend.

I thought it was a big improvement on 2 , the PG 13 didn't worry me and it was great seeing Mel Gibson on the big screen again. I would love to see him and sly do something else together they had a lot of chemistry

Get to the choppa..

Best of the three, the PG rating didn't bother me in the slightest and Gibson, Bandaras & Snipes are fantastic in it. Even Grammar's small role is fun.
However Arnold, once again, is wasted and not sure why Jet Li even bothered showing up. The young Expendables didn't bother me that much though the 'old man' jokes were lame.
All in all I had fun watching it, exactly what the film intended.

I just saw it yesterday and was extremely happy with it! While the presence of the younger expendables felt unnecessary and certainly did not add anything special to the story, I do feel that people are exaggerating tremendously about that. From the beginning of the recruitment to the point at which they are captured, it's only about 20 minutes of the movie. There were a lot of character moments in this which I absolutely loved and a few sequences that were a little emotional. The opening scene

From the beginning of the recruitment to the point at which they are captured, it's only about 20 minutes of the movie. There were a lot of character moments in this which I absolutely loved and a few sequences that were a little emotional. The opening scene had me grinning from here to ear as it reminded me of the glory days of 80s action cinema. Mel Gibson absolutely shined as the villain and honestly he had very big shoes to fill as you Jean-Claude Van Damme completely stole the show and the last one. Arnold had me dying with his "good morning! Let's get to da choppah!" Line. Also in the bar when Sylvestor Stallone tells him and Jet Li to get a room and Arnold puts his arm around Jet Li and says "he's jealous!" With a chuckle. I wish people had their hangups revolving around age up their asses. I'm so sick to death of hearing about how old they are. Funny how they are 40 years older than the current wave of pathetic pseudo-action stars and yet 10 times as powerful, intimidating and authentic. I was fully entertained by this and had a great time. Bring on The Expendables IV!

Overall, it was slightly better than 1 & 2. The dialogue was certainly more decent. Banderas and Snipes was awesomely funny and the action awesomely ridiculous. The young guys, though were pretty bland. Biggest problem I had though was with Arnold's character in the story. I wish Sly wrote the story to be more focused on the two, like maybe Trench's own Expendables going head to head with Sly's and then they eventually team up to take down Mel's villain.

Lots of fun

yep there are plenty flaws - the young ones are annoying and unnecessary (though Roussey killed it in her action scene), some abrupt pg-13 editing and most are looking old as hell - but it was a ton of fun espcially the ballistic finale. All the new addition from the old guard (Gibson, Ford, Snipes, Banderas) were probably the best the series has had to offer so far, really would want more out the franchise but maybe spin offs are the way to go since its getting really crowded.

Retire already

I agree that Gibson and Banderos were the stand out performances, but everyone else (well those over 50) just look too old, maybe the HD cameras emphasise this. Harrison Ford has jewels like the Churchill dog and I'd be surprised if he makes the 3rd new star wars before the shakes set in too much. Even Jet Li looks ancient and annoyingly winey and doesn't even get one punch in. The should just stop these. Now. Please.

Great time!

Thought it was well done, PG13 didn't bother me the least.. It had a nice balance..
Wish ppl could just enjoy these films cause when they are gone, they're gone...
Minor Spoiler:
Only down fall for me, was i wish they had shown a lot more of Gibson, his character was great not really enough of him. Same with Tcrews, and Jet

It was amazing! People are somehow asking for top of the line filming making, which is crazy. These films are meant for fans of those cheap and cheesy 80s and 90s action movies. Get off your high horse!

Disappointed

I went in with low expectations and was still disappointed. I agree that Gibson, Banderas, and even Grammar were the best actors in the film, their performances only served to highlight the lack of acting talent in the "action only" stars. However, outside of those onscreen highlights, I found the movie to be dull, the effects and CGI amateurish at best, and the action scenes poorly paced/put together. Maybe if Gibson had also directed it would have been better. I took my son with me and was

Minor Spoilers

So it's still not even close to the shoot 'em up movies that made these guys all famous, but it is better than the other two only because Snipes, Gibson, Banderas and Ford were outstanding. But I'm sorry, Crews should have died when Stonebanks shot him in the back. After the whole speech about the dog tags jingling, I thought it was a given. It also would have made Gibson's villain more badass. Instead, it's more watered down, and predictable. Schwarzenegger is yet again underused,

Schwarzenegger is yet again underused, Stallone is very much overused, and the only classic star that gets any length of time on screen, and that's been my biggest complaint for all 3. I get that these movies were his idea, but it's an ensemble cast, and he needs to step back. The final fight, which should have been the best part of the movie, lasted about 20-30 seconds and ended predictably. Other than seeing some cool one liners, and familiar faces, it's sadly another forgettable entry.

I actually enjoyed this one the most of all the movies. Then again, I've felt the entire series of films hasn't really fulfilled it's ambition. For me, it's the climax at the end that sinks it. It's huge and action packed and there's so much going on. I also enjoyed how most of the Expendables involved got an opportunity to show off their stuff, though I have to say that using these new, young guys was a bad move. Beside Rousey, who kicked major ass, I didn't care at all for the new guys.

I was disappointed. The PG-13 rating isn't the problem with it. It's watchable but just felt flat and having "Young Expendables" kind of defeats the "relive the glory days" purpose of these movies. Also, yet again there is a "Smurfette". I'm sure you could fit more women in the crew. In fact, if there *must* be Young Expendables, it would be interesting if it were an all-female crew. I did love all the Harrison Ford bits though.

Yeah, I wish there was more of that mixed into the action. Jet Li didn't get to bust a single kung fu move. That bothered me.

***SPOILER ALERT*** ***SPOILER ALERT***
It was watchable but didn't stand out entirely. For me, what hurt this movie the most is the 2nd act where we see Sly and the new Expendables recruits in action. It deviates from the whole movie. I was actually thinking 'Why am I watching this???'. Antonio Banderas and Mel Gibson made the movie worth watching.

It was pure shit.

Huge disappointment. Worst one yet . Worst use of Jet Li ever! Not even Antonio's cool performance made this watchable. Shit action scenes. And terrible idea of bringing on those forgettable yng Expendables .
If only Robert Rodriguez or Gareth Evans would have directed this. Just imagine that for a moment folks.
