What did you think of...The Wolverine?

Jul. 26, 2013by:

On the whole, most of us agreed that the first stand-alone Wolverine movie, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, sucked the bag, so many of our hopes were riding on the James Mangold follow-up entitled simply THE WOLVERINE. Thankfully, at least according to one of our film critics, Chris Bumbray, this version works a lot better, as he points out in his positive 8/10 review. We also spent the last week posting interviews from the cast and director on the site, which you can check out below.

But as per most summer blockbuster films, we want to know what you thought of the film so please feel free to POST YOUR OWN REVIEW in our strike back section below (or to your Movie Fan Central profile) and we'll continue to update the Rotten Tomatoes and MFC reviews over the next few days as well.

Rotten Tomatoes: 167 reviews, avg score: 66%
Movie Fan Central: 8 reviews, avg score: 7.2/10

Solid

Great movie, great action, loved the setting. Not as good as First class but a really entertainment flick. And I think the X franchise is (with Nolans Batman) the best comic book saga, and I really enjoyed almost every movie.
X-Men 9/10 - X2 9/10 - First class 9/10 - Wolverine 8/10 - Last stand 8/10 - Origins 6/10.

A solid 7 or so, and that's alright with me.

It was solid all around and chock full of some extraordinary fight sequences and a singular narrative that was solely driven by Jackman's performance. It just felt nice to be without that clutter and to see a comic book movie break the generic pattern and scale back everything for a more personal story that focuses on one character. I honestly think this was the closest to a character study I've seen from the genre but it felt like they bit off more than they could chew at times. The ending was

I honestly think this was the closest to a character study I've seen from the genre but it felt like they bit off more than they could chew at times. The ending was largely forgettable and there were a couple of dead gaps to be found but the great parts hit really hard and managed to stand out from the rest. I though Viper was pretty awful and the third act (mostly the finale) was pretty forgettable and distanced itself from the slower, quieter and more awesome two thirds that we started with. Despite the shortcomings I thought it did more justice to Wolverine than any of the other films that came before it, so I'm satisfied yet wanting more.

Almost the same as the last one.

I had a different wolverine movie in mind. i was hoping for balls to the wall, highly stylized, INVENTIVE action scenes reminiscent of afro samurai, samurai x, the crow or bruce lee's game of death. i don't want him fighting another CG nutbag. wolverine needed an action director. not a dramatic one. i'm sorry but it could've been worse with darren arofonsky. As it was, mangold wasted the ninjas and yakuzas, the coolest opponents any hero could face. the bullet train scene was mediocre. anyone

I get what your saying and in fact agree with a lot of it. But your comment only focuses on the action aspect of it. Were there any other things that you didn't like? I have to disagree that this film was nothing like the first....maybe action-wise it was disappointing for you like the first but don't make blanket statements that aren't true.

I wish we were living in the timeline where Darren Aronofsky ended up making the film using Christopher McQuarrie's script.

Like most James Mangold films, the end result was middle of the road. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. It just sort of... was.

I think the mandate at Fox was, "We want it to be better than the first Wolverine film, but don't go pushing any envelopes!"

REALLY LIKED IT

I think this is the best comic book film of the summer and I definitely enjoyed it more than Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel. I don't want to sound like a hypocrite because I loved Pacific Rim, but I think it was refreshing and enjoyable to see a superhero have a scaled down action film that impressing and also was entertaining. I think the film lacked in action but that wasn't bad as I felt it didn't drive the film and occurred when it was supposed to. And when it did it was clear and beautiful to

Felt like I wasn't seeing a comic book film, but a western of a loner having to survive in a different and dangerous environment. I didn't enjoy Crimson Viper in the film but everything else was solid. 7.5/10 from me! Bring in DOTP!!!!!

So f'n awesome.

It's not a movie for people expecting lots of gloss and CGI'd action scenes. It's a raw, very grounded take on Wolverine but not in a dry, boring way. Simple story, great characters, well paced-out plot, and Wolverine just kicking ass, swearing, and taking names. Loved every second of it and will definitely give it a few more viewings on the big screen.

Definitely A Must See!

I really enjoyed THE WOLVERINE a lot. I saw it twice over the weekend and am still thinking about it. I'm watching ORIGINS on FX while writing this and am reminded how lackluster that film was. Seriously folks, this is THE definitive Wolverine film we've all wanted. Although there are some great action scenes, this is a more intimate and deeper look at the character, one that I found to be really intriguing. I love the X-Men films but it felt good to catch a breather from the mutant overload

Rila Fukushima (Yukio) and Tao Okamoto (Mariko) were strongly and rightfully suited for their roles.
All in all, this a great film and one that is worth checking out. It's vying for the #1 spot on my favorite of summer '13 list with THIS IS THE END.

i loved it.It was the ultimate wolverine movie and way better than origins which i also loved but this one had a better story, better action not to mention it was raw and hardcore and really bloody at times with a kick ass after credit scene. My second favorite movie of the summer/year after iron man 3. 5/10.

Just like FIRST CLASS, it's an entertaining movie that adds nothing to the overall franchise. The conflict about WOLVERINE deciding whether or not he wants to be mortal isn't well developed, just like most of the characters.

Sucks

The story was too messy, the movie was sooooooooooo boring and appearantly in the world of mutants, in Japan there were only 3?
I thought Origins was ten times better. 3D could've been better also...

Come on man. Of course there weren't just 3. They obviously were aware of mutants. There were several dialogues that allude to this. Also I don't think having a mutant filled movie like Origins was what they were going for here. They wanted to focus on Logan which the other movie didn't do. Sure it glazed over details of his life but it was so chucked full of trying to introduce mutants they never really got to talk about Logan. I disagree about Origins. Just thought it was a failure to

I was let down, big time

I liked the movie a lot until the last act.
The giant adamantium shredder looking dude was disappointing. He sucked. The green viper girl was just awful.
The action was amazing. The funeral and the bullet train scene were awesome though and bring this movie to a 6.5 / 10
Also, Hugh Jackman's veins are thicker than my legs

Also...

Did anyone notice the fight scene in the town in the ninjas appeared to be cut down alot? I remember a couple shots from the trailer that I didn't see in the film at all... Wolvie with the cigar, explosion sending all the ninjas fying, the chains around his arms, etc...

Solid 7/10

Overall, very entertaining and engaging from the get go. The ended started to come apart a bit, but not nearly as badly as it did in Origins. Wish there would have been more sword vs claws fight (the one against Yashida's son was best sequence in the movie and the scene with the Ninjas in the town was wasted with little fighting).

Not enough from the comics...

I thought overall the movie was good, but I think non comic readers will enjoy it more than those that have read any of the books.

My main gripe was that they should have introduced the Muramasa Blade.

It can cut through adamantium, and negates Wolverine's healing factor. It would have the perfect tool to pull from the comics, but instead they went with a heated up adamantium sword, and a bug attached to his heart. :(

Also, if they are seriously considering expanding the X-Men

Also, if they are seriously considering expanding the X-Men universe, they should have taken the opportunity to introduce Wolverine's son; Daken.

He's heavily tied into Wolverine's time in Japan during WW2, and would have made for a better villain/plot twist at the end.

Overall I liked it better than Iron Man 3, but not as much as Man of Steel.

It was a whole bunch better than I had been led to believe. It really was a character driven story, they weren't just saying that so the movie sounded "deep". The Japan setting was put to good use and yes, cultural stereotypes aside, there were some pretty cool supporting characters and I did like that a predominantly Asian cast had the chance to shine in a Hollywood blockbuster. Best part was the mid-credits scene.

Bette than X-Men 1 and 3 but not as good as X-Men 2

I definitely enjoyed it more than Iron Man 3 or Man of Steel, although you really have to wonder what James Mangold was thinking when he cast Svetlana Khodchenkova as Viper. To say that she was the weakest link in the film would be a huge understatement.

X2 = 8.5/10
X-Men: First Class = 8/10
The Wolverine = 7.5/10
X-Men = 7/10
X-Men: The Last Stand = 6.5/10
X-Men Origins: Wolverine 3.5/10

I actually rewatched all of the X-Men movies about a year ago, and while I'm convinced that Origins is just as bad as everyone makes it out to be, I honestly feel that the Last Stand, while definitely worse than X-Men 1 or 2, isn't absolutely terrible. I think that the reason it gets so much hate really isn't because of the overall quality of the film

I think that the reason it gets so much hate really isn't because of the overall quality of the film (although that certainly contributes to it) but because 1) they had such high expectations after X2 and it failed to live up to them 2) Taking massive liberties with one of the series most beloved storylines (Dark Phoenix) and 3) The unnecessary deaths of so many characters, especially Cyclops whom a lot of fans felt had already been screwed over in the first two films. You combine that and you get a film that wasn't as good as anyone was hoping it would be, but there are definitely other superhero films that have been much worse than it (Fantastic Four films come to mind) that people don't hate on as much, just because they didn't have as much against them personally.

Rant over.

Aside from only one or two minor complaints, I loved it! Better than Iron man 3 and man of steel by far. Spoiler question: Am I the only one who is bothered that he could still use his claws when he was powerless? Indeed.
His healing powers were weakened, but not totally shut off...
He says it himself: 'I don't heal... At least, not like I used to'... Or something like that...
I was more bothered by the fact he remembers events from before his amnesia...

Barely above average film. Great action but is bogged down with overly boring dialogue. The mid credit scene saves this film. Which is truly sad.

It was really good. Surprisingly good, after Orgins I had lost most hope and even though they don't follow the source material at all, it still ended up being a cool and fun time! 6th try is a charm I guess, The Wolverine is the best onscreen portrayal of Logan yet. The use of flashbacks through out the film help give it structure and worked with the story, a major complaint I had with MOS was the flashbacks were irrelevant to the plot. While the general complaint I hear is that this is 2/3rds

They did Deadpool the shit out of Silver Samurai and there is a lot of questionable events towards the end but it didn't hurt this movie like it has previous times (Last Stand, Orgins). It seems like Fox really stepped up the production values as well, the bullet train sequence was on par with any of the other best eye candy scenes this summer. Overall I hope this is a sign of the quality we will get in the future X-men movie universe, The Wolverine is an impressive accomplishment because I didnt think Fox had it in them to do this after Orgins.

Good to see something scaled back with more emphasis on the character. Not the best wolverine movie, mainly because of pg-13 but a solid entry into the comic book movie realm.

They had to go PG13, studio would never limit profits with an R rating for a movie like this. I totally understand that, and think it was actually pretty graphic for a PG13! Mangold already said the DVD will have an unrated with way more blood, and probably a few of those sick kills that happened JUST off screen lol. I loved the movie, and I can't wait for that unrated cut!

I understand what you're saying Lord, though I have to wonder if keeping it PG-13 was a good idea.

Look how well The Conjuring performed, and that was rated R.

Plus, I have to wonder if announcing that there would be an R rated DVD a week before opening weekend might be partly to blame for Wolverine's fizzle.

I already don't really care much for going to the theater because of the absurd costs and lack of cinema etiquette, so why shouldn't I wait for the R rated DVD instead?

[link]

I already don't really care much for going to the theater because of the absurd costs and lack of cinema etiquette, so why shouldn't I wait for the R rated DVD instead?

On the other hand, Conjuring cost less than $20M, while Wolverine cost around $120M...
I tend to agree with you about the unrated cut announcement, though

I hear ya JJ, cost $14 to see The Wolverine matinee in 3D. A complete ripoff considering I didn't care for the 3D at all, it was the only matinee left when I got there though. I'm a huge movie buff, and even I cherry pick which movies I'll see in theaters.

I liked it. In a time where the superhero movie mentality is "bigger & more destruction = better" (let's have 100 iron man armors or destroy most of metropolis!), it was nice to see a smaller scale, character based movie like this. The fight scenes with Wolverine were some of the best staged in all of the x-men movies, and Jackman as always is great in the role. I did think the script could have used just a little more work, but over all it's an entertaining movie.

Overall, good movie

Not without it's faults though. I really dug the self-contained story for Logan, but where was his berserker rage they promised? And wasn't Harada the true identity of the Silver Samurai in the comics? Why change him and not have him be the Silver Samurai and not that lame mech suit, or at least have him in the suit? Certainly the best comic book movie of the summer. Although that's not saying much.

Yep I liked it, it was involving and we weren't subjected to indistinguishable CGI fight scenes every 10minutes. Thought they could have used the Japanese countryside a bit more effectively though.
All in all it was a fun time made even more special by the 5 minute preview of Elysium introduced by Sharlto Copley, which was really cool.

I really enjoyed it. The entire cast was excellent. The bullet train sequence was badass! Watching Will Yun Lee flip all over the place was awesome. Jackman's portrayal this time was more cerebral; he was quiet and didn't give a damn if you liked him or not. Very Clint Eastwood. Loved this movie.

Mr. Wolverine

I like the movie! Turned out pretty good... I thought Jean had taken over the body of someone else, sort of like *spoiler* the after credits special

I thought, at first, it COULD be some kind of psychic imprint left by Jean... But I think she was more of what's left of wolvie's 'heart' and 'soul'... That would explain why, in the last apparition, 'Jean' seems to have Asian eyes: he's REALLY starting to fall in love with Mariko, so she's slowly becoming his new anchor with life, instead of Jean...
Just my opinion though...

Have you ever had a really bad weekend where everybody tried to kill you and you couldn't understand why but it turned out okay because you got laid for the first time in a very long time? The Wolverine has.

good fun!! but not perfect!!

This was a pretty decent movie throughout with good fights and plenty violence, the only let down was silver samurai the story arc was a bit crap, would have been better as a man in a suit, not a robot that looks like a tony stark creation!!

Great

Spoilers*** A few changes to certain parts of the movie would have made me happier but overall I enjoyed this more than Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel. I would have loved to have seen Logan turn around and cut all of those ropes pulling him and go berserk on those ninjas but that didn't happen. Other than that I liked the pace of the movie. Even the bar scene in the earlier parts was more of the way it should have went down in Man of Steel. For the few who said

I don't want to sit there numb for the last 60 mins like Man of Steel with repetitive action scenes. Build some character, have some down time and get to know the beautiful Japanese ladies in the movie and get to see some of the culture there so I can actually care a bit for them and look forward to seeing them again. At the end of the movie, I actually wanted Logan to stay there which means they did a good job that left me actually caring something for the characters and their relationships. That's a success in my book.

Well said, I felt the same about wanting Logan to stay in Japan. I even started wondering after seeing the post credit scene which was 2 years later. He seemed to be returning back home again, did he go to Japan again in that time frame?

I loved the movie until the end fight scene. Was hoping he'd fuck up the ninjas and his adamantium claws breaking was just stupid. Also stupid was them trying to steal his mutant power by drilling holes into, you guessed it, industructable adamantium!

Pretty sure they were drilling into bone, which was cringe inducing in my opinion. His skeleton is covered in adamantium, not made of adamantium, hence the bone claws at the end. But yeah, I was hoping he'd fuck up more ninjas than he actually did.

also Adamantium in theory could be broken by heated adamantium wielded by a much stronger forced driving it into each other.

It was decent

Except for the The Last Stand references..I don't know about you but I wish to forget that one happened at all.

Also the mid-credit stinger or whatever kids are calling it these days was the best part.

I went in with low expectations after Origins and this far exceeded them. The final fight with Silver Samurai was way too short for my liking, but loved the end credits scene!

Better than most...

but didn't live up to expectations. When Aronofsky bowed out of directing, I was severely disappointed. When Mangold stepped in, my expectations were brought back up, a bit. All in all, though, it was a better storyline/directing than anything X-men related except for First Class. Hope X-men: DOFP raises the bar some more.

Go see this movie!

I think they nailed it. Does it have its flaws, well what movie doesn't? As a whole, well rounded and pretty well cast, there is no cheese at all here, good acting all around. Thought Viper was weakest part of the movie, and the "surprise" ending is no surprise at all lol. But Wolvie kicks ass throughout, and his kills pull very little punches, can't wait for the unrated DVD!

I dunno.....it takes diamonds to cut diamonds, so if adamantium is the strongest substance in the marvel universe than what else can break it than adamantium itself.

Yes a metal of similar material only of a hotter temperature can cut material of weaker density and less temperature if the heat transfers to that object resulting in a melting of the weaker material combined with a blunt force resulting a cracking effect that breaks the metal at the fracture point. Those claws to begin with are barely an inch or two wide so a sword tempered at the right temperature combined with considerable weight could easy break those close.

As for cutting diamonds, that is done through friction based cutting but yes you do need diamonds to some extent to cut diamonds since the friction often requires a wheel of considerable density combined with a diamond impregnation for best results otherwise the friction will only polish the surface instead of cut it.

It was ok

*****SPOILERS******

Rotten tomatoes has this at about 65% and I'd agree with that. This movie is good, but nothing special. I hope he gets metal claws back by days of future past. When he lost his adamantium in the comics was when I stopped reading, the ten years that followed were by far his most boring era. Not sure why fox decided he should lose his metal claws. They're what make him awesome. The bone ones are nowhere near as cool.

Like Ark613 said, DOFP involves changing the past to change the future, so events in past X-Men movies (except First Class) might change a bit. Also, Magneto's ability to manipulate metal could be used to restore the adamantuim to his claws.

Solid, entertaining flick

It won't blow any minds, it's just a solid movie. Made me think of samurai and Sonny Chiba movies and 70s-style tough guy flicks. I dug it. It has its flaws of course, but it was a refreshing change of pace.
I don't know what voodoo Fox did to produce 2 solid X-Men flicks like this and First Class, but I hope they keep at it.

It was entertaining for most of its duration. Can't help but feel like the last 15 minutes took a turn towards being pants-on-head crazy, but at the same time it'd be ridiculous to think they'd make a Wolverine movie completely free of sci-fi camp. I guess thats what the Mission to Mars room was for.

I really enjoyed it, but...

what was the point of the end? If the whole point of the movie was to get Logan to follow the granddaughter to the lab only to kidnap him, why not do that in the very beginning? Logan was right there, they could've save everyone a lot of trouble by just kidnapping him when he got off the plane in Japan. Why was the son skipped over for the business again, there was no point to that either. I was expecting all these questions to be answered in the final showdown but the only aspect of the ending

I didn't hate it, but didn't love it

I was quite enjoying it until it's final battle -- that just took things too far and made it just too ridiculous. It didn't really even make sense... ah well, can't win'em all! I think this is due to be another one of those love/hate movies.

I thought it was really really strong. Compared to so many recent super hero blockbusters, that assault you with loud noises and non-stop, bombastic, city-leveling CGI action sequences, this was a restrained character piece. It was mature, having a Man with no Name vibe throughout. I felt the ending was a bit predictable, but that is the only negative I will level at this movie. More please.
