What Did You Think? We want your Deathly Hallows review!

Nov. 19, 2010by: Mike Sampson

In a little experiment, we had two of our writers - one huge HARRY POTTER fan (Jenna Busch) and one non-fan (Chris Bumbray) - attend DEATHLY HALLOWS screening to see if there was any disparity in their thoughts on the film. Nope. Jenna gave it a 10/10 and Chris gave it a 9/10.

The film sold out countless midnight screenings and looks to set records this weekend as the first part of the last installment hits theaters. With so much excitement around the films we want to know what YOU think! As we often do, we're going to leave this article up all weekend with the Strike Backs open and encourage you to post YOUR review of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS. If you're so inclined, you can even post a review to your Movie Fan Central profile.

I say this often but it's even more important with this movie: PLEASE NO SPOILERS. And, as always, no attacking, flaming or insulting other users.

Great film out of bad idea = good film

It really bugged me that they split the book into two films, with all the lack of adaptive nous that came with that decision. Great direction and cinematography though. Full review can be found here- [link]

Loved it

Unlike HedwigX, I'm not against the idea of them splitting this movie into to. For one, it guarantees us more. It also leaves us, who have read the series, with a satisfaction that everything that could be done to be loyal to the books had been done.

I loved it. I thought it was excellently executed and I looked at each moment with more interest than the last. It took a frustrating premise (aimless waiting) and made it captivating.

That said, I'm not convinced those who haven't read

That said, I'm not convinced those who haven't read the book will appreciate it. It seemed to glaze over details that I understood based on my book knowledge that I feel will leave holes/questions in the audience...I suppose we'll see. 9/10

Outstanding. It was better tan anything that came before it in the series and the lines, holy crap! I have never seen lines line that to any movie in my long life.

Hell, the lines for the second midnight showings were at Rise of the Sith levels.

Absoluteley fantastic. It took Yates a couple of tries but he finally nailed it and he nailed it in a big way. From the opening shot this film felt dark and epic and never let up. Since I know you don't want to read the same things I'll say something different: the REAL locations made this movie that much better. If we were watching the gang travel through a CGI filled mountainous landscape it would have felt small and empty. The scope of the movie was huge and the backdrops and locations

The Deathly Hallows story retelling was clever, creative and fresh.. and I loved it.

I ragged on Yates a bit for part 6 but he nailed this one. 9/10.

Really dug it

It was like the State of Play (original UK version)of Harry Potter flicks. Love the WWII parallels, and dug that this was like a fugitive/heist flick. Even the much complained about "sow middle" wasn't THAT bad at all - nowhere as bad as early Potter flicks. At least we got nice character moments here. Only complaint: it really is only half a movie. But a really good half it was.

Awesome

Definitely the most faithful adaptation of the series, which wouldn't have been possible had the split not happened. The acting was surprisingly good - the best yet, I think - and the film nailed the mood and major points of the story perfectly. I'm pumped for the final half.

Really dug it

Thought this one was a lot better than HP6. Loved the scenery and actually the "slow" middle was my favorite part of the movie. You can really tell these kids have grown into fine actors. Watson stole the show for me though. 8.5/10

Most faithful adaptation of the series... which is a welcomed bonus. Rowling did such a good job of integrating major plot elements of the past books into something of importance in the 7th book, and the movie really magnified that in my mind. Cannot wait for part 2.

One word...

Amazing. It was made so well. Everything a Potter and movie fan could want. You can really feel the end of the series with this flick. I felt so emotionally invested in Part 1 and it did not let up to the very last second. Cannot wait till part 2. It was beyond epic.

Bring on Part II

I was totally onboard with the split up of book 7. it simply could not have been done in one. Either it had to be the worlds most expensive 4 hour movie, or it would have done no justice to JK Rowling masterpiece.

Strangely enough I liked the movie more in retrospect, than when i was sitting in the cinema. I Guess i was a little unexpectedly overthrown by the immense quality of this movie.... it sounds weird but going into a potter movie normally means watching a spectacle with full on magic

There is less of that in this one, but he real quality lies in every other aspect: the acting, the directing, cinematography the music score, it's all amazing! And thumbs up for the location scout! What i was impressed by most in this movie, that they finally got the mood of the movies right. Theres blood, (theres even a scene, which envolves a old lady, that made Sam Raimi jealous, because he could have used that for drag me to hell!) theres death, theres torture, theres a heavy reference to WOII, and theres sexual innuendo. good for the makers for finally not underestimate the viewer!

Well done.

DH:P1 is on par with Chamber of Secrets for being the best Harry Potter adaptation. A much welcomed return to form after the undeniable abortion known as Half Blood Prince almost made me cry. What I dug the most was Yates finally executing the loneliness, horror and frustration of Harry and his search for the remaining horcruxes.

i didnt enjoy this film one bit, i think its just because harry potter isnt ment to have a posh voice. the only actor out the main 3 that isnt just plain annoying is rupert as ron. Like before all the films have sucked compaired to the books, this is no different. At the very start of the book we get harry and dudley having a moment where dudley says thank you for saveing his life and it kinda sets the tone for the book. Yeah, I enjoyed the Dudley part in the book as well but they got so many other moments right that totally eclipsed the Dudley scene. A-Funeral-Maker- is right, you should have probably stopped watching after the first one. But cheer up buddy, Harry Potter is iconic, has a great full story and will last for years HBO or BBC will most likley remake the whole thing as a 7 year series 20 years from now, there you can get all the Dudley and Mad Eye Moody death scenes you want.

You are by all definitions insane. Insanity it doing the same thing over and over expecting different results and always coming up with the same. This henceforth invalidates any real opinion you have on the matter, because you were expected to hate it in the first place.

I could not have been more impressed with this installment of the Harry Potter films. Deathly Hallows, Part 1 embodies everything I love about the series. It was dark, exciting, and followed the book so closely I felt like I was reading right from the pages. David Yates did such a great job with this film, the way he has experimented with new camera techniques, and not to mention the amazing performance he go out of the trio, Daniel, Rupert, and Emma... Now this is what made the film for me. I felt like I was watching brand new actors. Their performances reached new depths and for the first time I felt like I could really feel the intensity of the friendship and emotionals ties between the three, which I have always thought, had yet to be effectively explored, and that is such a huge part of the series. This was such a great start to end and I cannot wait to see what comes next!

Half Blood Prince and Goblet of Fire are both better movies in my opinion. Deathly Hallows: Part 1 was good, but not great. There were WAY too many camping scenes in Deathly Hallows that ate up too much screen time. Some people are giving Deathly Hallows: Part 1 ten out of ten ratings, and in my opinion it's an 8.5 out of 10. It's a damn good movie, just not the best in the series.

From a huge fan of the books and a normally dissapointed viewer of the films

Finally, a post Prisoner of Azkaban Harry Potter movie that takes it's time to give well deserved gravity to the stakes involved and the character development. I didn't notice or care if parts had been taken out or changed from the book. Gorgeous to look at, has an excellent story structure and quite possibly the most soul shattering ending of any main stream film released this year. Toy Story 3 be damned!

5/5 Hot Wings

Best since Azkaban

So I watched all the previous movies before I went to see this and I can easily say that this is the second best Potter movie after Azkaban. One day it may even beat it.

For starters, the movie is beautiful. I don't mean beautiful for a Potter film, I mean absolutely jaw droppingly gorgeous. The landscapes, the framing, the subtle use of handheld work. Flawless. Filmmakers out there. Listen up. This is how a movie should be shot. Real locations. Seriously, if you saw Tarsem's, The Fall, this

Filmmakers out there. Listen up. This is how a movie should be shot. Real locations. Seriously, if you saw Tarsem's, The Fall, this is that beautiful. If this doesn't get a Best Cinematography win, it'll be a damn travesty.

The acting has improved greatly. The three leads are fantastic. The pacing has also greatly improved due to it being split. I loved that we now had the time to really get to know these characters. One of favorite scenes isn't some action sequence, it's this beautiful scene where Hermione is very angry. Harry sees this and turns up the radio and slowly begins dancing. Slowly but surely, she begins to smile and dance with him. Equal parts heartfelt and funny but also touching. This scene of beauty and peace, in the midst of the chaos and tragedy around them, is why this movie is phenomenal.

I can't recommend this movie enough. It truly exceeds all expectations. My second favorite movie of the year right now. Just below Inception and just above Social Network. Yes, it's that good.

If you're a Potter fan, books or movies, do yourself a favor and see this in theaters. If you're thinking you'll just catch this on bluray, believe me, you'll regret it. This has to be seen on the big screen. The only flaw I can think of is that if you haven't read the books, parts of the movie won't really make sense to you. But you'll still get most of it and maybe it'll convince you to read the books.
Highly, highly recommended.
P.S. Thank you WB for not postconverting this into 3D and allowing me to see it in it's full IMAX glory. No darkness, no blurring. Just the way it should be seen.

Sigh

The weakest film of the series! Pacing was terrible, just an incoherent mess. I can't imagine my experience if I hadn't read the book (source material should NOT be a prerequisite of a film!!). Scenes that people called "boring" were actually great scenes that were executed poorly. I post all blame to David Yates. The most fatal flaw (aside from how poorly the scene at the Malfoy's was handled) is there is never any real threat from Voldemort. I just hope Part II can wash this dreadful

Yes, I enjoyed the film like everyone else. The acting was as good as it has been and the film was very well polished. My only complaint is the neverending tone of the film. IT looked great. The action scenes were lot's of fun. But otherwise I was really bored for the rest of the movie. I'm definitely biased because the book is so good, and I understand you have to mold it a bit to fit into the storyline of the other movies but it was poorly paced and I just found the performances annoying.

Fair enough, but I thought the performances were as good as they've been in the series. The actors have shown great growth in my opinion. I do think you are expecting too much from a book-to-movie adaptation, in terms of how faithful the adaptation is. Having read the book a few times myself, I couldn't imagine a much more loyal conversion to the big screen.

This was by far the best Potter movie yet. Even with all of the small details they left out, this was still the most faithful adaptation yet. It was also the funniest, the darkest, the scariest, and the most entertaining. I never wanted it to end, and I now realize that I would have gladly sat through a 5-hour movie just to see Deathly Hallows in its entirety. Bring on July 15, 2011!!

Best one by a mile!

This was the best HP film yet. I really like the rest of the films, beside the first two, but this movie kicked my ass. This was the best HP film yet. I really like the rest of the films, beside the first two, but this movie kicked my ass. Great but incomplete.

I really loved it; I can't remember the last time I saw a movie with this much tension. Definitely one of my favorites, but it will absolutely never be my favorite until it is whole.

I went into the movie knowing I wasn't going to get much of an ending, but what I got was even less than that. The ending made me feel empty; like I had to stop watching the movie to go to work, but then I let a friend borrow my DVD until July. I have no doubt that the Death Hallows as a complete unit will be

I'm also still a little confused as to why these movies never make me feel much when characters die. I won't spoil anything, but as invested in this lore as I am, none of the deaths have ever gotten a strong emotional response from me, and it is doubly so of Hallows.

It's a good film, not the best Harry Potter film so far though, but a solid effort in all respects. Its main failing is that due to the two movie format for Deathly Hallows, part one really does feel like a half a movie, and it needed a bigger cliffhanger ending than it had. Still, watch 'em both together and I'm sure it'll be an excellent experience.
