What Did You Think? We want your Pirates review!

05.21.2011

When it comes to critics, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES isn't having much luck. The fourth film in the PIRATES franchise is getting swashbuckled with most critics agreeing it's the worst in the whole series. Our own Chris Bumbray said in his review that he was so bored, he "almost fell asleep twice." It's not faring much better on Rotten Tomatoes with a 33% rating. But the film is expected to take in over $100 million this weekend at the box-office so is this a case of critics not being in tune with audiences?

We want to know what YOU think! As we often do, we're going to leave this article up all weekend with the Strike Backs open and encourage you to post YOUR review of PIRATES 4. If you're so inclined, you can even post a review to your Movie Fan Central profile. .

I say this often and it's just as important with this movie: PLEASE NO SPOILERS. And, as always, no attacking, flaming or insulting other users.

Not sure where all of the hate is coming from, but I liked this quite a bit. I really like the universe as a whole despite the last two films being a bit tiring to to take in. This one was damn fun and reminded me why I like the Pirates universe so much. It was my kind of popcorn action movie fun! Makes me want to re-watch the rest...but I kinda don't want to watch 2+3 :P

2 & 3 have significantly grown on me with repeat viewings; especially 3. I think I will like On Stranger Tides more upon my second viewing.

I enjoyed it (didn't love or hate it), however, I missed the sweeping visuals that Verbinski used in the first 3. I just didn't feel like I was "there" like I did with the previous ones; if that makes sense. Maybe I missed them, but I don't remember distinct wide shots that carried the viewer into a closer shot of the scene. The shots just seemed to just "cut." I also missed the cannon battles and The Black Pearl.

I wish they could have started the film earlier in time when Blackbeard went

I wish they could have started the film earlier in time when Blackbeard went after Barbossa and The Pearl and sunk it. Would have been more memorable to me (I feel like I am Monday morning quarterbacking) BUT I did have a good time.

something different

Fist of all let me say i am not here to explain why people hate this movie, it was what was expected of it, second i do agree at least half an hour could've been trimmed out, but not any specific scene, but little moments outta scenes shorten it up a bit, overall 3.5/5 and i enjoyed it,

Was pretty good. It's basically a 2 hour performance vehicle for Depp which is fine, he really makes that character live and breathe.

I don't know what movie you guys all saw, but I friggin' loved it. What I liked most was they didn't have to explain everything. We don't know where Blackbeard got his magic sword and zombies from, if Angelica actually loves Jack or just lying again, or how/if Jack ever does get the ship back.

To me, this felt like a good old fashioned Adventure story that wasn't riddled with forced moments (the compass shows you what you want most seemed like a last minute maguffin to me).

Truthfully, I think it is a lot easier to crap on a big budget Hollywood movie online than to actually dislike it. Frankly, I think a lot of you actually dug the film (which I'm sure none of you will admit) but since you're online, you can slam it all you want and come off as a sophisticated snob as opposed to someone who's willing to shell out cash for an entertaining, albeit lower quality product than a film like The King's Speech, just to sound cool to the online filmgoing community. If you went in after seeing 2 and 3 expecting some sort of high art that featured political commentary or an overly complex scenario and plot that required critical thinking, then you were expecting too much from a film based on a ride at Disneyland. If you, instead, came to see Jack Sparrow betray and be betrayed while executing daring escapes/rescues, all while laden with plenty of sweet cgi and makeup effects as Hans Zimmer's score booms in the background, you got everything you wanted without any lame-duck Orlando Bloom dealing with daddy issues.

You had Penelope Cruz for that area...fair trade!

So, why is it that whenever someone didn't like a simple Hollywood film that person must strictly like more 'arty fare' a la "The King's Speech"?

That is a narrow-minded and flat wrong viewpoint, and it's fucking disgusting to see soo many people on here thinking like that.

really awful film

I am big fan of Johnny Deep and i was a fan of the pirates series. I saw all three installment at less twice in theater and i have the dvd's at home. Having said that i actually have to say that i really wast disappointed with this movie. Not really because of Jhonny Deep because as always, he was great as JAck Sparrow, it just that has soon as the big voyage star, the movie really become boring. The only thing that made me happy about this was that i didn'T have to pay to see this crap because i saw it at a premiere screening last wednesday, so while i lost 2 hour 20 minutes of my life on this movie at less i saved 15$ to see it

Lower your expectations and just enjoy

The movie itself is fun and made me smile which is pretty much all I ask for from this franchise. If you have low expectations, as I did because come on it is the fourth in the series how could I expect greatness, then you will enjoy the movie even more when it turns out not to be crap.
Sparrow seems to be losing a great amount of his original charm and wit. Unfortunately, Depp feels like he is giving his all to an aging character who has little more to give, he seems tired and uninterested

Sparrow seems to be losing a great amount of his original charm and wit. Unfortunately, Depp feels like he is giving his all to an aging character who has little more to give, he seems tired and uninterested for a great deal of the film.
The missionary Philip and the mermaid Serena, who gave the film a great amount of heart and soul, brought my interest back up. I wanted to know more about them, follow their story, see what happened to them. If it weren’t for the smooth and charismatic acting skills of Claflin as Philip and his ability to say much without really speaking, I don’t think I would have enjoyed the film as much. I also found the mermaids really intriguing, they were superbly done visually and they were a great mix of exotic sex appeal and terrifying sea creature. If they do another movie, which I am not really hoping they do, I want to see more about the mermaids, their mythology, their back story, they were the most exciting part of the film.
As for Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane, I was not so impressed. McShane was nowhere near as menacing or powerful as he was on Deadwood, he felt watered down and boring. I understand that Disney cannot make an R-rated film but that doesn’t allow a character like the fearsome Black Beard to be fully realized, he needs an R rating to really shine.
For all of its flaws in rehashing the same old stuff and some lackluster performances, I enjoyed this movie, though not for the reasons I expected. If I had to rate the Pirate series from favorite to least favorite it would be 1, 4, 3, 2, but honestly, none of them can match the awesomeness of The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Man, that was pretty bad. About 25 minutes in I was REALLY missing the Black Pearl and the crew assembled by the end of part 3. Sucks that they weren't involved. Barbosa on a leash wasn't nearly as fun either. No Black Pearl just felt like a Star Wars movie (4-6) without the Millenium Falcon.

I judge movies nowadays by

"was it worth the $20 to see?" This movie wasn't great but i don't think it was crap. Worth the price of admission but barely.

Another Giant Steaming Turd Sandwich

I came close to falling asleep during the second one, the third I did fall asleep and almost walked out during. This one I refused to pay for, and was dragged to kicking and screaming since my friend had free passes to. Well looks like the most overrated piece of shit franchise in movie history kept their streak going. This was just as bad if not worse than the third. Actually it had to be worse, because this time I walked out after a half hour. First movie's awesomeness was a total fluke. This

underwhelming

better than 3...but underwhelming across the board...thor and fast five are more fun...and this script coulda been written by a high school kid...i think that's the main problem...it just lacks any real gusto.

Pretty good

I went in thinking I'd love it (after all, I loved Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest and liked At World's End) and I just really liked it. It's not as good as the first three, but it does fix all the problems they had. My chief complaint was Blackbeard, who was no where near as good of a villain as the series had previously had in Barbossa, Davy Jones, or even Cutler Becket. The story line is good, but gets bogged down a little in as many betrayals as At World's End. The movie's saving grace

The one thing I can say is that if this is the last Pirates, I'm happy with the 4 forms as a series, but if Captain Jack sets sail again...I'll gladly go along.

....I fucking LOVED IT!

I'm a huge fan of the first movie and the sequels were decent enough but I loved the story and characters for this new sequel. Depp was funnier than ever, Penelope was hot, McShane was badass and the mermaids were deadly. I enjoyed it for exactly what it was.

sorry for rambling on but i was just expecting so much more from this film.

Really don't know what people expected

I enjoyed this movie for what it is, a good fourth film for a trilogy that was apparently closed. I felt it fresh and entertaining enough to not care looking for flaws. I enjoyed the ride a lot, people should know this is no Godfather or Inception.

Eh...

It was not bad but it was not as good as the last two. It was missing the emotional pull the others have. It seemed the roles were for any actor with a descent range, the parts were not designed for each pacific actor's strength except for Johnny of course. Depp was great like always. Now the 3D preview of Green Lantern is worth the price of admission...wow!

There was definitely a lot of things wrong with On Stranger Tides, but I still found myself entertained by it. I think peoples expectations for it were a little too high to begin with, I really don't understand the seemingly seething hatred that drips out of some reviews. It was fun, what else did you expect?

Look, a Pirates movie will never get Depp nominated for an Oscar again. This series peaked in its very first incarnation, but at least Gore Verbinski had enough visual style to keep the series entertaining for two more entries. That's something that's lacking in this one, and the film feels hollow for it. Yeah, there's pretty jungle shots and some weird voodoo/living ship element that's thrown in and never explained, but it all pales in comparison to Davey Jones and even Barbossa in the first one.

The movie drags just like they all did, but at least it's well acted by mostly everyone in it. Even if their characters are wasted. The one huge glaring flaw I see in the movie is when it decides to completely interrupt itself to focus on two equally unnecessary characters I really hoped would die. The priest (who's name I forget and refuse to look up) and the mermaid. They were a colossal waste of time and a complete waste of film. Their characters added nothing to the story (except to serve as virtual clones of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley's characters) and could have been excised from the film entirely without anyone noticing.

Not terrible by any means, just... predictable, mediocre and nothing special. Some bright spots to be sure (mermaids!), but most of the action was generic - especially the lame climax. Time to call it a day, guys.

I found the film to be pretty entertaining. Depp was entertaining as always as Sparrow, and the rest of the cast did a great job, including all of the new members. My main complaint is the writing. The script was very underwhelming. While everyone else seemed to be having fun, the script seemed like it was just kind of thrown together. Still, I enjoyed the film, and it had it's moments, including the mermaid scene which I really liked.

Hop on board this boat, arr!

For a franchise that was almost swallowed up by its ambitious scope and convoluted plot, On Stranger Tides is a triumphant return to form. This is a sequel in the best sense of the word: carrying on yet starting anew. The story is well-told and the pacing is swift. Everything we loved about the first film is back stronger than ever: the wonderful period atmosphere, the swordfights, chases and naval battles, and, of course, Captain Jack.

The old-fashioned spirit of adventure missing from many modern films is alive and well in the fourth Pirates outing. This is a supremely enjoyable ride (almost as much as the source material), filled from start to finish with the same energy that flowed through the veins of the first film.

Fun in the right places, thrilling in the right places, scary in the right places and humorous in the right places, this is one ship everyone should hop aboard. Arrrrrr!

They Killed the Series

I am truly a fan of this series and I was eager to see where they took it. Sadly, they took it straight to the toilet. The writing was lazy, the actors looked as bored as the audience and there was only one sequence that had any energy in it. What a disappointment.

I liked it better than the 3rd one.

I think it mostly has to do with the fact that Bloom and Knightly's characters did nothing for me. Cruz and McShane were much more interesting additions. Depp delivers Sparrow as well as ever, though that character's running on fumes for me by now too. Still, it was fun enough I guess. Probable best they put the franchise on ice for a while now though.

Wasn't awful but, wasn't great. Too long and director Marshall gave the film no energy or pop. The script was also very flat giving these now beloved characters very little to do. If they want this series to continue they need new writers with fresh ideas and a director who can bring more life to the proceedings.

It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't that good either. I found it dull, annoying and I kept thinking about the burger I was planning for dinner after the movie, not a good sign.
3D would have been much better had they not set about 90% of the film at night, or below deck or in a cave or...
My biggest problem was that it wasn't much fun nor very entertaining.

I thought Pirates 4 was a lot of fun. Lots of classic Jack Sparrow moments in it. Good action. I thought that the character of Blackbeard was a bit underwhelming but he was still effective. Director Rob Marshall lacks the ambitious flare of Gore Verbinski, but this is still a satisfying entry into the Pirates series. My rating: 3/4

STAY THRU THE CREDITS FOR AN ADDITIONAL SCENE!

I liked it about as much as the others.

Where I really loved certain moments of each film, but overall it's just a nice film to watch. Nothing spectacular. I love Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and the Spaniards in the movie but the story was just kinda meh.

HOWEVER - The first scene with the mermaids WAS AWESOME! Probably my favorite moment out of all 4 movies. That song was HAUNTINGLY GOOD.

I just would have written the ending SO much different. Because this movie had a chance to have some serious balls and went with

POTC4 is a lot of fun. I loved it, and I think it fits perfectly well into the Pirates franchise. Dead Man's Chest will always be my favorite of the lot, but this one's pretty entertaining as well. Jack Sparrow is as cool as ever, there's a new badass villain, and the chemistry among the crew is very enjoyable. To me it's a great summer popcorn flick, so anyone going in NOT expecting Black Swan will be thrilled. The only downside to this movie is the lack of wide, scenic shots, and that's

The only downside to this movie is the lack of wide, scenic shots, and that's probably because Rob Marshall doesn't have Gore Verbinski's visual flare. Other than that, the story's pretty cool and I'm definitely game for the 5th flick.
