What Did You Think? We want your THOR review!

May. 6, 2011by: JoBlo

As per most weeks, we asked you how much $$$ you think THOR would open with this coming weekend, and it seemed like most of our readers believed that it would make somewhere between $40-80M, although most believed it would be between $60-80M. As this week progressed, the film started to pick up some mighty steam as it was released internationally before North America, and the reviews have been glowing so far.

The critics who are aggregated on Rotten Tomatoes (generally folks who aren't "gaga" over comic book flicks) have given it an impressive 80% rating so far. We've even got 9 reviews posted to MOVIE FAN CENTRAL so far, with the film averaging 7.4/10 so far. Not too shabby!

Our own Chris Bumbray also gave the film a solid 8/10 and called it a "perfect piece of summer fun", and so with all that great buzz around the film, we now wanna know WHAT YOU THINK!! As we often do, we're going to leave this article up all weekend with the Strike Backs open and encourage you to post YOUR review of THOR. If you're so inclined, you can even post a review to your Movie Fan Central profile so that it will be saved forever and ever... :)

I say this often and you wouldn't think it'd be relevant with a movie like this but, trust me, it is: PLEASE NO SPOILERS. And, as always, no attacking, flaming or insulting other users.

I know it's a little tedious to be getting Pre-Avengers-heavy storylines, but once Cap America hits...that only means The Avengers will get right into the good stuff. Thor was a lot of fun.

I found it long and boring...

Sorry to be a hater, but it felt tedious with far too few action sequences.

My kids were confused by a number of the plot points, and I have to admit that I barely was able to keep track of some of it myself.

At one point it truly felt like I was watching the D&D movie.

All this was, was a set up for The Avengers.

Very Fun Movie

I enjoyed Thor very much. I wanted a little bit more action but it was still very good. I'm sure the sequel will be much more action-packed.

I was on the fence on this one when the movie was announced. The trailers looked ok . . . then I watched the movie this weekend and I can state that I liked the movie . . . I would give it an 8/10.

I thought everything was fantastic except for Kat Dennings. They could have cut her out altogether. She added nothing to the story, felt like she'd been written in at the last second, and her jokes were all delivered at completely predictable spots. She was tailored to appeal to teenage girls. Nothing more.

And another thing...

Idris Elba ROCKED as Helmdall. Stoic, clever, imposing, and noble. Everyone who got up in arms over a black man playing Helmdall can go freeze their tongue to a Frost Giant's blue coin purse.

The Best Marvel Movie so far

Loved it. Played like an 80's Spielbergian adventure flick. Hemsworth IS Thor, totally believable. I bet Portman secretly wishes she had Branagh to direct her in the prequels. Can't wait to see more of Thor, both in Avengers and in sequels.

Overall, I liked it

Chris Hemsworth was great, Hopkins looked like he was having a blast and Hiddleston was an effective villain. Downsides? Natlaie Portman did the best she could but her role was a waste of space, and the 3-D conversion was useless. I'd agree with Bumbray's score; 8/10 sounds about right.

Thor and Loki were awesome! Great acting by both actors and a really good story, true to the Thor character and a good film for those who don’t know so much about him. Very difficult to please comic fans and regular movie goers and I think Thor does both.

Easily the best film of the year so far! Hemsworth really nailed the role. I felt like I was watching a movie star being "born" with this film. Hiddleston as Loki was bad ass as well and really brought the emotion. Who knew Branagh could make a big ass action epic like this!? Great story, pacing, action, special fx and humor. They really delivered with this film. Going again on Monday!

I actually really loved it. 8/10 is the perfect score for it, and it was a great way to open up the summer season. And Hemsworth's performance was wonderfully charismatic.

I'm also a huge fan of Kenneth Branagh, and for a guy who's never made a movie like this before, he did a great job. Props.

Definitely not the train wreck it could have been, Thor still had a myriad of problems ranging from simple things like shoddy Frost Giant CGI and confusing action to more complex logical issues.

::Spoiler Below::

I'm mostly glad to see Hiddleston a success as Loki. That character's portrayal was really make or break for this movie. Props to him for that. I'm really looking forward to him in the Avengers and hope he gets to develop Loki more.

On the other hand, Loki's an immortal or a God or whatever how you interpret the movie, AND the main villain in Thor mythos, so it was unlikely he'd die in the (first) movie.

2nd Best Marvel Film

Definitely the 2nd best Marvel film to the original Iron man. Good, but not great, movie. All of the Asgard scenes were excellent. My biggest issue with the movie was that the middle of the movie dragged. The sequel should be set almost entirely in Asgard. If this happens I'll be the first in line.

It wasn't perfect...

but very few movies are these days. A fun ride with an excellent plot. The honorary mentioning of Dr Blake was much appreciated. It was a great amalgamation of the original 'Thor' comics and the modern beardy 'Thor'. Lets hope the sequel will hold up, IM2 was a tad disappointing, and 'The Incredible Hulk' needed a sequel. All in all a really fun ride, moy one complaint id that here is one cameo who needed to be in full costume...that would have kicked ass. What marvel is doing here is proving

In this case he would have said "go get fucked, Singer", don't you think ?
More seriously it was logical for Singer to go the way he did for the X-Men movies, considering the subtext of the movies... Just has it was logical, being set in the 60's , that he put some kind of "classical" costumes in First Class...

THOR was a spectacle!

Everything about it was amazing! the action, the humor, the heart, it had it all, the performances were great! it's this years IRON MAN! kinda made me forget about CAPTAIN AMERICA but now i can't wait to see what they've done with the Capt. Marvel's on a winning streak, let's hope they keep it that way. If you haven't seen THOR, go see it! it's the most fun you'll have in theaters by far!

Chris Hemsworth was good as Thor

i geeked out when i saw him twirling the hammer like he does in the comics. i thought it would look weird in live action, but it worked.

i also liked how many of the shots were filmed at an angle (camera was held diagonaly). i took it as an homage to the superhero/scifi shows from 60's/70's.

Surprisingly, it actually exceeded my expectations. I thought Hemsworth was great, loved all the stuff in Asgard, thought they nailed the Warriors Three (although they were a tad underused), and totally geeked out when a certain SHIELD agent showed up. Bring on the Avengers!

Saw it a week ago (Taiwan)

I saw it in 2D. It looked like 3D. The scene in the world of the Frost Giants looked like it was made with 3D post conversion in mind. Someday they'll find a way to do 3D without glasses and when something gets thrown at us it will actually be a surprise and not what we paid $5 extra to see.

I thought the pacing was good. A lot was given away by the trailers but not too much. There was some misdirection. Still, I was confused by Loki's motivation at the end. Characters shouldn't do

Anyway, that's a nitpick. I can't say anything else without spoiling the movie.

I will say this though: I was disappointed with how it ended. I waited through the credits and expected Thor to find a way to solve the problem he faced before the credits started. Why? Because that makes dramatic sense and would have led right into the Avengers.

ANOTHER ...

... great addition to Marvel movies, Branagh had the toughest job extending Marvel universe with magical elements and did more than well. Well paced, great cast, "coming of age" theme, with a few sparkling moments ... so far, the best movie of the year. And Hemsworth, the guy really shines here. As a fan, I'm satisfied most of the elements from Thor's mithology (Odin sleep, Rainbow bridge, Mjolnir curse, Frost Giants) are there. Hope Thor 2 isn't so far away ... :D

Drank, Fought, Did its ancestors proud.

The AFter credits scene was meh. But the movie was tons of fun. One half of the movie is a Sword & Sorcery "We Quesst!" viking epic, the other half a Spielbergian 50s-tinged Sci Fi flick...and they seamlessly combine to create a classic Superhero movie.

Hemsworth WAS Thor and had all the best lines. Clark "Son of Coul" Gregg is the unsung gem of the Marvel movies. Hawkeye's cameo would have been a lot cooler if it hadn't leaked so horribly.

Totally agree with you, but for the post credits scene: usually the post credits scene leads to the next Marvel Studios movie though in Incredible Hulk Stark wasn't in post credits, so it was logical for this one to int at Capt Am... It's just that average people won't know it's about Cap until they actually SEE the movie...

From visuals to writing to acting this film was solid. I've only seen Chris Hemsworth in one other thing (Star Trek) and he really impressed me here. Hopkins even LOOKED like he was having fun playing Odin and Loki was really well done as well. The earth scenes were what worried me in the previews and while I think the second act dragged a little, the destroyer on earth scene was fantastic. I think it officially tops Iron Man as my favorite Marvel Studios film so far. If Avengers is as good as

In Comparison...

I don't want to receive a lot of hate responses for this, but I thought this movie was just OK. I found the beginning to be quite promising, surprisingly, but my problem was that the character arc took only 2 days to fulfill. This movie kind of felt like filler and just for introductory purposes to The Avengers movie. I thought this was a fun 120 minutes in the theater... but I thought more could have been done or for us to have felt more. In the end, he ended up saving a small town of 30

I'd give the film 6.5/10

Seems Like I'm The Only One Who Didn't Like it

Looks like The God of Thunder’s bolt is bigger than his bite.

“Thor” is being marketed as this great epic tale, to kick off the barrage of superhero films we get this year, and sure enough there is a trip at the gate.

The story of “Thor” is about the powerful but arrogant warrior Thor Odinson who is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

Right off the bat of reading the plot, the movie did a poor job of living up to it’s billing, but I’ll get to that shortly.

Chris Hemsworth plays “Thor” he is chiseled, has a strong beard and golden locks like the Thor we know from the comic books. While I wasn’t expecting anything earth shattering from anyone in this film, Hemsworth did an alright job in selling himself as the superhero. Many have complained about his accent, but I didn’t mind it.

What this performance and platform does is now, I think Hemsworth will become a solid action star, with the Thor moniker for the rest of his days in Hollywood.

Sir Anthony Hopkins plays Odin, the king and father to Thor and Loki. Sporting some impressive costumes and metal plates, along with an eye patch, Hopkins does deliver strongly.

The supporting cast of Natalie Portman who plays Jane, Kat Dennings who plays Darcy and Stellan Skarsgard who plays Erik Selvig do a good job as the team of scientists who protect and take Thor in.

The biggest issue I had was with Tom Hiddleston who plays Loki, brother to Thor.

The character of Loki is very interesting, portrayed well in the film, but based on the powers he possess, not the acting done by Hiddleston as him. I felt like Hiddleston who is fairly unknown until now, over acted the part tremendously and just didn’t fit the profile of Loki.

The film starts out slow, telling the story, mainly the origin of Thor, Loki and where they are from. We get a full dose of the arrogance and defiance that forced Thor’s banishment. It starts to pick up when Thor meets Portman, Dennings and Skarsgard, as he gets “acclimated” with earth.

There are some funny moments but mostly from there it starts jumping around. The story that was beginning to be told stops, you are left asking questions about Thor and nothing is answered. There was such a lack of fluidity for the last hour and change of the movie that it really turned me off.

One of my major fears when I first saw the trailer for “Thor” a long time ago was that the CGI used in the film would cripple it, and I’m afraid it did. The effects and computerization was so over done that the story of the character from a comic book began to feel very fake.

It was as if you were reading an actual comic book, with flashy pictures instead of a smooth, picture by picture representation of what was going on.

The run time was just under two hours but it flies by, and not in a good way. Usually sub par films drag and you feel like you are sitting there watching forever. “Thor” went by quick and I couldn’t believe it when it was over because I felt we learned NOTHING about the character or the story!!!

If I could jump back to some of the positives for a moment.

We get a very quick cameo of Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner (who is not billed on the cast) probably for secretive purposes but the information of him being in the film was leaked months ago. Anyway, we see Renner as Hawkeye working for the government, he draws his futuristic, super cool looking bow and arrow, but doesn’t use it.

And then he is gone, what a tease. Guess we have to wait for “The Avengers” for more of that.

Also Idris Elba was great in his minor role as Heimdall, the gate keeper of Asgard, I felt like he needed more screen time, big fan of Elba.

The costumes and make up while some being outrageous was done fairly well for the most part. The helmets especially on Thor and Loki were very neat, along with the weapons, all well done.

Back to the negative.

The score is beyond forgetful, nothing musically stood out, usually in these superhero flicks we get some great pace making from the sounds, not the case here.

One of my biggest gripes was with the lack of utilization of Thor and his hammer. That is the staple for which he is known for and yet we barely see it in action.

Overall the film seemed rushed, incomplete and too over the top for it’s own good.

It’s a shame because the story could have been told so much better because the focus was put on Thor, and his issues from home along with his struggles of being on Earth. Yet the film jumped around so much, it lacked depth not only in description of it’s main plot but also in it’s characters.

In my eyes “Thor” was missing too much substance and tried to make up for it with effects and failed miserably.

Rating: 6/10

Couple of problems here, one they said no spoilers and you have spoiled the "cameo" appearance now. Nicely done, very considerate. Also, your review seems to me that you just did not want to like the film. I am not sure how the movie jumped around. It flowed very well and and the pacing was smooth and solid.Everyone I went with loved it and the entire theater cheered when over and stayed through the credits. Just seems to me you do not like the characters so you then give negative reviews

100% agreed. The movie didn't do much for me.

You're not the only one. I didn't care too much for it either. Thought it was very 'silly' and at times, came off as cheesy. Especially when Lady Sif, & “The Warrior's 3" came to "rescue" Thor.

Starts off slow??? Did you miss the first twenty minutes of the movie or something? There's a big bad ass action/fight scene right near the beginning that plays into Thor's entire story!
Honestly you need to watch this movie again. This review (no offense) is incredibly off base.

Solid 7 out of 10

Tempted to give it an 8 though. Its comic book movies at its best. Its pure entertainment. Hemsworth nailed Thor and Hiddleston's acting as Loke do impress. Beautiful scenery, nice effects, solid acting, and actually really funny.

Looking forward to seeing Loke again in The Avengers, to a Thor sequel, with Branagh directing, of course. And to the blu-ray longer directors cut version.

I really enjoyed it. It was fun, the FX were really good and Hemsworth was perfectly cast as Thor. A fun summer flick that has gotten me excited for Captain America and The Avengers.

It was fun.

I really liked it, a great adaptation. Fun, funny and a wild ride. Not really great in 3D, seen far better conversions.

I loved Hemsworth as Thor, I loved the character Thor. But I did not like this film as a whole. It felt very rushed and just kinda thrown out there to introduce us to Thor for The Avengers movie. This should have been epic and it just wasn't. I was disappointed. With that being said.... I'm very, very excited to see Thor played by Hemsworth in The Avengers, cause again, he and that character rocked.

I have seen it twice already, in both 2D and 3D and the 3D is NO GOOD. Go see it in 2D!
It's a fun movie (it's also actually a good film, not just fun). There are a couple of things that aren't perfect but it certainly is one of the better Superhero movies with Iron Man, The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 2. (but it's more fun than all of those!)

4/5 STARS

The trailers for THOR made it look kinda cheap and cheesy, but its far from it. Kenneth Branagh has crafted a very fun, perfectly epic summer blockbuster and has made it feel like what could prove to be a classic comic book origin story movie. Credit Kenneth Branagh for directing his cast in well balanced performances that do a good job of feeling credible without ever feeling too cartoonish or stoic. Chris Hemsworth is fantastic as Thor. He’s larger than life, charismatic, funny, totally committed to the character even in the humorous moments. It’s a solid lead performance. Anthony Hopkins is better than he’s been in quite some time. He lends his old school British charm and nobility to the film, but tones down the scenery chewing quite a bit, giving a nearly understated performance. Thor’s friends and allies get plenty of screen time and don’t feel at all like glorified extras while the story does a fantastic job of splitting its time between our world and the world of Thor. It doesn’t feel too short or too long and it does a wonderful job of setting up Thor’s eventual ties to the Avengers. All in all it’s a really solid comic book movie and origins story with wonderful CGI and costume design, plenty of cool action and an interesting conflict for Thor. Natlie Portman doesn’t do much. She and Kat Dennings are there to be cute, which is fine. They sit around and smile and gawk at Chris Hemsworth’s chiseled body and that’s about it. Hawkeye (AKA Jeremy Renner) shows up in a neat little cameo and Clark Gregg is great as Agent Coulson. An all round solid, larger than life adventure.

Don't care about the effects

But I was very impressed by the performances. Hemsworth was solid, showing all the dimensions the character allowed and avoiding a one-note beefcake turn. Hiddleston was particularly versatile, providing no doubt the best and most poignant scenes, even against Hopkins' enormous presence. My only issue was the bouncing among worlds. However, it was a fairly clean execution by Branagh, given the rather strained story structure. I don't know what could've been done differently, since THOR

Anyways, it was fun!

It was what I expected it to be. And the thanks should be to that of Branaugh. I thought he did a fine job of putting a 'Shakespearean' spin to the Thor character and the universe. Yes, it's not a perfect movie, but it was enjoyable and fun! The actors are what sold it for me in the end. Again, thanks to Branaugh's direction, they all had memorable performances. And despite Portman's phoned in performance, it was still eons better then her dull performance in the Star Wars prequels! The

It was completely unnecessary.
We could have ended up with something far worse, but it isn't as bad as the other half of people who didn't care for it.
Overall, I enjoyed this movie amongst the crop of Marvel films the most. Yes, more than any of the Spider Man movies AND Iron Man!

Very Good!!!

Good stuff. Don't want to say too much, but the JoBlo review was pretty accurate. Did not see it in 3D and don't feel like 3D woulda added much. Beyond that solid story/acting/visuals, and Branagh did well with the material, particularly the action scenes...

My one complaint: the post credits epilogue (don't think that's a spoiler ALL Marvel films have them) sucked ass. Easily the worst of ANY Marvel film...

Simply enough...

I thought it was awesome!

My expectations were pretty even -- but built little by little. It really ended up being a super cool flick. The scale was a nice blend of epic and grounded, if that makes sense. Hemsworth fits perfectly into the Marvel world and I look forward to seeing more. Also, at one point I got chills and was totally pumped. That hasn't happened for me at the movies in a long time.

Job well done.

Was a lot of fun. Not the best Marvel film, but fun nonetheless. Reminded me of Hulk in the way it's plot moved. It did seem to end on an anti-climactic note and the romance seemed forced, but overall it was a lot of fun.

9/10 Every bit as good as I was hoping that it would be. Thor is an exquisite and fun film. I thought it was smart, well written, visually stunning, very well directed, and struck just the right tone for the material.

7/10 I dug it, but there were many quirks that kept it from being great. The acting was great, but the script had a bid too much cheese in it. I was also bothered by Branaugh's insistence that 60% of the film be shot with the camera angled like he was 90's Sam Raimi.

My full review will be up later today, but in short- the cosutmes and set design were spectular. Hemsworth is excellent as Thor. The rest of the cast is also good, even if some of them have nothing to do. The humor is pitch perfect. Overall, a grand adventure. 8/10

9/10 Thorgasm!!

As a Thor fan, I was a little skeptical when I saw the first footage at Comic-Con. I tried to lower my expectations as much as possible, but I was still excited.

After the first 20 minutes of the movie I was already liking this movie. Some people might not like the design of Asgard and the costumes of the Asgardians, but I did. The acting in this movie could have easily come off as cheesy, but luckily it turned out great! Chris Hemsworth ruled as Thor, and I can't wait to see him team up

I saw it last weekend ( Australia). I went in not knowing anything about Thor's background other than the usual stuff God of Thunder weilds a hammer and that Thursday was named after him. I love the shit out of this film. I didn't think I would love it as much as Iron Man 1 but certainly loved it more than IM 2. Chris Hemsworth is the guy to keep an eye on. I think he will go places in time to come. So my suggestion GO SEE THOR. Please stick around till after the credits for a cool extra. 8.5/
