What Did You Think? We want your Tron: Legacy review!

4 years agoby:

The early relationship between audiences and TRON: LEGACY seems to be mixed, at best. At an almost perfectly even 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, some critics openly hate the film (Devin Faraci said it's just short of being a "complete disaster") while others, like Tron Guy, call it a "truly fantastic experience." OK so maybe Tron Guy isn't exactly an impartial critic but Jenna Busch gave it a 7/10 and Chris Bumbray even gave it an 8/10. (For the record, I'm somewhere in the middle. I didn't love it, but didn't hate it either.)

The film is many years and three Comic-Cons in the making and finally today it hits theaters. With so much excitement around the films we want to know what YOU think! As we often do, we're going to leave this article up all weekend with the Strike Backs open and encourage you to post YOUR review of TRON: LEGACY. If you're so inclined, you can even post a review to your Movie Fan Central profile.

I say this often but it's even more important with this movie: PLEASE NO SPOILERS. And, as always, no attacking, flaming or insulting other users.

It was good

I thought it was okay. It was better than most of the reviews led me to believe it was. I'll see it again.

Though, it did feel like only the 1st act in a new trilogy perhaps. Where maybe the original Tron movie is to the new trilogy as "The Hobbit" was to the LOTR trilogy.

But if they make more, and I hope they do, less exposition please. Show instead of tell.

Eh...

Not a horrible movie; I certainly don't regret seeing it. The story wasn't that bad. It could be seen as an allegory for the information age/internet. I got some biblical connotations too. As for the effects, pretty awesome. HOWEVER there is a younger looking Jeff bridges, they cg-d his face, which looked terrible. They really did a bad job on this guy. He looked like he was plucked from Zemeckis' Polar Express. I found it awfully distracting. Other than that the movie was decent.

Not that great...

It wasn't worth the price of a ticket for seeing it in Imax 3D...sure it looked pretty, but that was it. You pretty much saw how it was going to end a mile away so I kinda tuned out for parts of it...I'd see it on a regular screen for matinee price, then it would be worth it.

Fantastic movie!!!

I loved Tron Legacy, I think the story was great..yeah granted it's not a new story, but neither was Avatar's it's all about how you put a different spin on the story. The effects were great!!! Definitely has my thumbs up, looking forward to another one if Disney decides to go that route!!!

I loved this more than avatar as the characters were better and the story was one that I could actually give a shit about instead of keep saying dances with wolves or last samurai did it better

Bloated CGI crapfest

This is what happens when you spend all your money on effects and not on the script. Oh look bright, shiny, flashy things!

You know....I loved this one as much as I loved the first one....the soundtrack was awesome and the director hit this one out of the park...not bad for a first timer! The effects was fantastic and it was probably the only 3D film I enjoyed this year....good times!

Eh, it was okay.

I don't know, the beginning was boring, then it took off nicely, with great effects, but then it got really boring, and then it had an okay ending (Matrix Revolutions anyone?). Some parts felt too much like other movies, and there were little parts that I felt the characters and their actions were poorly thought out/written. Olivia Wilde is so fine, though. And the Daft Punk soundtrack is awesome.

i'm sorry dudes and dudettes.... but i was extremely disappointed in this movie. i mean, it can't just be me when i say i was bored as SHIT during this movie. and i KNOW tron. i know it...... seriously. but......... give me something ELSE! something other than the same generic fucking story line and dialogue. "oh remember when they were in the light jets, and it seemed like they were flying right at our face!?".................. ummmmmm... no.

My only major complaint with the film is that it didn't really do enough to bring people up to speed with what happened in the first movie, which was important for me since I wasn't really a huge fan of the original. Although for me, this film did somewhat legitimize the original movie. I also had a slight problem with the 3D being to shallow. I actually took my glasses off a few times in the theater and could barely tell a difference which was a real shame since this was the first major

I actually took my glasses off a few times in the theater and could barely tell a difference which was a real shame since this was the first major film since Avatar that I was actually interested in seeing in 3D (and yes, I was aware that some of it was suppose to be in 2D). But all the characters really did it for me. Sam was much more interesting than I expected him to be, Olivia Wilde was at her most beautiful here and Jeff Bridges was top notch in his duel role and really appreciated the little Big Lebowski nod weather it was intentional or not. Although I do wish Tron had a little more to do though seeing as how his name is in the freaking title. And I'm sure it's been said already but the Daft Punk soundtrack was top notch. I just wish it had been more accessible for non-Tron fans. 8/10

Fantastic!

I absolutely LOVED it. I saw it in IMAX and 3D, I don't know if you guys did but it was well worth the money spent. I went into it expecting it to be bad from the reviews I have read. It was far from that. It was very unique and unlike anything I have seen before. The story was good, the cast was great, and the acting was far from horrible. The soundtrack was fantastic as well. I would definitely go and see it again. I loved the brief Cillian Murphy cameo, and the contributions of James Frain

The one bad thing that unfortunately was used a lot was the "younger" Jeff Bridges. He looked like he belonged in a "Polar Express" movie, one of those animated movies where they make the characters look human. I easily give it 5/5.

That limited edition poster I got at Tron Night is going in a frame on the wall.

And a plus is the trailers that ran before Tron, Into the Wild 3D, Thor, Pirates of the Caribbean

Isn't it amazing to think that 28 years from now the special effects from Legacy are gonna look just as shitty as the 1st looks now? lol Since the technology continues to advance so quickly...

As With Avatar...

I feel all the ones hating it forget what a movie is, above all else- a visual medium. The visuals here, from the camerawork and cinematography to the look of the costumes, but mostly, the damn amazing CGI is fantastic. So, on that level, a hard 10/10.

Luckily, in my opinon, the story is (mostly) quite good. There are a few things they don't quite delve into enough (mostly dealing with some characterizations at the end, and how Encom became so huge,I loved everything else about it. The

JoBlo got it right

8/10

Having not seen the original I came in with no expectations except to feast my eyes on some amazing visuals. (IMAX 3D is the way to go)
I also came in a long time fan of Daft Punk (who's score I thought fit perfectly with the video game feel) With that in mind, I can understand if people didn't like it because of whatever reasons relating to the original and its sanctity -- I have no argument for you. But if you want an exciting, visually and audibly stunning watch. By all means check

9/10. No explanation needed. People seem to forget we watch movies to watch them. Movies no longer have a chance in this day an age. If you spent the whole time looking for faults, I pity you immensely.

It's equally as valid for me to want an explanation of why you thought it was good as it would be for you if someone said "1/10, no explanation needed". Don't pretend that this is some groundbreaking work of art that needs no excuses. I thought it was a mirthless and inferior sequel with a closeted disdain for the original. I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise- why did you enjoy it so much?

i went in not expecting a lot, except from bridges, who is phenominal in everything he does.but what i saw i can only seem to describe as epic. though not a perfect movie, i was impressed. good effects, great soundtrack, not a bad story. id give it somewhere around 7.5 to 8 out of 10

Not as disappointing as Avatar, but then again, I walked in expecting Avatar-like disappointment. For better or worse, it's exactly like Avatar: ridiculously amazing visuals, a very inspired world, strong musical score (Daft Punk kicks ass), one dimensional characters which in turn makes for wooden and caricature performances (except for Jeff Bridges who lacks the ability to not be awesome) and an exposition-heavy, predictable story full of plotholes.

I think Legacy would've been a lot

I think Legacy would've been a lot better if the story focused more around Flynn instead of his son.

I'd give it what I gave Avatar: 6/10.

See it!

I have to say I really liked it. Tron Legacy is a darker and deeper film than the original. Jeff Bridges was a great as always. The visual effects were some of the best Ive seen all year, I don't care what anyone says. Loved the soundtrack by Daft Punk, definitely going to pick that one up for sure.

My only real complaint, despite the story being very interesting, I thought it felt a little weighed down by some of the exposition and fast pacing.

Some parts of this movie were not so great but overall i think it was a very enjoyable film. The main thing that stood out was that for me, this film had the best utilized 3D i have seen in a movie yet. It didn't have any objects floating out in front of you or swords poking you in the eye, but the visual feel of the film while in the grid was absolutely amazing.

3 likes: Amazing score, gorgeously sleek effects, and spectacular concepts and design.

3 dislikes: Garrett Hedlund is the definition of wooden and uncharismatic, the dialogue was awful, and the CG 'de-aging' effects were atrocious.

I didn't think the story was bad, and I still had a good time...but it could've been much better.

DO NOT SEE IN 3D!!! 2D VERSION IS SUPERIOR!!!

I really liked it and this is coming from someone who wasn't a fan of the first film. I loved the visuals and the music as well as the characters and the "simple story." In fact, I feel this film entertained me just as much as Avatar did last year. And just like Avatar, the female lead steals the show. Olivia Wilde was amazing as Corra, I loved Bridges doing his "dude" schtick and thought Hedlund was a nice change of pace from the usual action heroes we get. And did I mention the music, holy

And did I mention the music, holy shit it's great! The direction of the film was great as well. For a first time director, Joseph Kasinski does a bang-up job. Seriously, the aerial dog-fight sequence at the end of this film was more exciting than anything in the Star Wars prequels. I have to warn you though, I watched the 3D version and 2D version back-to-back and the 2D version is the clear winner. The colors are so much more vibrant and the action is so much clearer. I know this was filmed in 3D and I respect that but the 3D version didn't even feel 3D so all it did was make the colors look really dark and washed out. This is the Avatar of 2010 in my opinion and that's not a bad thing. Unlike Avatar though, the 3D is pointless. Go see this in 2D and just let yourself be transported to the Grid. Man, I can't wait for the blu-ray!!!

I have to disagree with you and say that IMAX 3D was spectacular. This is a movie that was not up-converted to 3D. It was meant to be in 3D and that is when I will pay the extra money to see it.

I actually really loved this movie, to my surprise. I would give it an 8/10. Jeff Bridges is awesome, the visuals were awesome, lightcycles are awesome... the whole movie's just awesome. And the soundtrack by Daft Punk seriously deserves some sort of award.

It looks better, but it manages to be even more boring. Jeff Bridges literally phoned most of his performance in.

Bah! Fooled again.

No bueno. 2 outta 5.
The lightcycle/jet sequences were visually compelling, but the story was lame, the dialogue was trite, and overall, it was bor-ing.

Disney succeeds in mediocrity once again. Way to go, assholes.

Oh, and fuck you.

Liked it a lot, a fun ride and a entertaining movie, even better in 3d than Avatar.

A solid 7 out of 10.

Attn Disney: FREE Tron '82!!!

Loved it, especially all the nods to the original. But as I've said before, not having the original easily available is going to SERIOUSLY hurt this film. I know the suits as Disney don't care, but the "vault" process will definitely harm them this time. For instance, my girlfriend, her brother and another friend of ours had NO INTEREST in the film until I showed them Tron '82 a few days ago. They loved the new one, but all said they wouldn't have seen it without the original. If the Diz thinks

7/10

It was definitely a fun movie. Great visuals and i liked the directing style. Yes, yes the story was lacking a bit and I would have loved some more exposition instead of scenery. But it was just gorgeous. The biggest issues were the dialogue and the script. But it didn't hold it back from being enjoyable.

Stop fussin' and have a good time.

After watching it twice I found the movie to be even more enjoyable the second time around. My eyes aren't distracted by all the great effects and I can pay attention to all the little character interactions and small bits of dialogue that moved the story along. I've read the comics, and remember the first movie and if more critics informed themselves with the entire story they would have understood it better. C.L.U. was fantastic and those effects are getting better with age. Can't wait to see

Good stuff

I thought it was pretty damn good. Reviews were a bit harsh on the story, I think it served the film well enough, not great, but certainly not horrible.
Visually it was beautiful. I was surprised how well alot of scenes worked emotionally, wasn't expecting that. Olivia Wilde was great. I'd not seen her in anything before and she was sexy, funny and charming.
3D was awesome for the most part, my only complaint was that at times it just wasn't deep enough, and that it would cut from deep to

It didn't hurt my eyes or nothing, but when you see these glorious Grid lines in deep 3D then it cuts to a shallow version it was a bit frustrating, like a really hot stripper not lettign you touch her!
Overall, a pretty great cinematic experience.
OH, and do people actually pay attention to Faraci anymore? That guy is a douche and hates himself almost as much as he hates the world!

Don't know about anything else but visually? It was enthralling and amazing! I tried sitting through the 1st a couple months ago but it was utterly painful. I just couldn't get past how bad the special effects looked. Like it was REALLY bad and I mean don't hate me but it was like 5am and I hadn't slept so I just really didn't have the patience for it. Now, with that being said... I can't tell you if Legacy stands up on its own as a stand alone film. Story was eh... I should have watched the

Other than that man... like "The Dude" himself said in Legacy... It was "radical"! And is it just me or does it feel like Jeff Bridges plays "The Dude" in like every movie? Because as I watched this I had a flash back to "The Men Who Stare At Goats" and "The Big Lebowski". Is he just really like that in real life?

Loved it

I agree 100% with the JoBlo reviews I have read of the film. It is interesting, fun, exciting, and uses 3D in a worthwhile way. Having never seen the original, I don't have a perspective on that, but as a new fan all I can say is that it was beautiful and delivered a fun movie-going experience. People can knock the story and praise the visuals (just like Avatar), but I was totally into the movie the whole time. When I see a big blockbuster, that is what I want - to be entertained. I was

EXTRA TIDBIT - People knock Avatar to the "Pocahontas" storyline, but no one knocks West Side Story for the "Romeo and Juliet" storyline. Think about it.

That's because West Side Story was INTENTIONALLY the Romeo and Juliet storyline, just like how "10 Things I Hate About You" was the Taming of the Shrew.

Regardless, Avatar's story of "joining the other side" was intentional, just like Last Samurai and others. Granted, the dialogue, characters, and Sigourney Weaver's performance leave a lot to be desired, but stories are rehashed in new settings all the time. If nothing else, Avatar and Tron sucked me into their respective worlds and were incredibly entertaining. My movie-going experience doesn't need to be a film studies course. I just hope to get my $12 of entertainment.

I'm with that guy dude... He's right all those other films made it obvious and it was intentional... Cameron made it seem like he came up with this brand new, amazing, original story when all he did was rip off Dances With Wolves and swore we wouldn't see the similarities...

I didn't hate it, I didn't love it.

I did have a lot of problems with the screenplay. A lot happened way too conveniently. And there was very little pay-off on the ending, as nemesis suggested.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but it won't make me watch it a hundred times just to experience it again.

Visually, it was stunning, but I did get bored of the colour scheme after a while. It was just black, blue, orange and white everywhere. We needed to see something else at some point. The original Tron benefited from switching from

The de-aging process was terrible, but we all knew that going in.

I also felt that the stakes weren't very high. I didn't feel that what Clu had planned was much of a threat in the grand scheme of things...

I'd give it a 6/10.

Sadly a magnet for thumbs down here...

I thought it was portentous rubbish. Special effects were great (with the exception of Bridges' de-aging), and Jeff Bridges was great (again with the exception of de-aging, try as he might to sell that thoroughly unconvincing effect), but I really don't exaggerate to say we're in Matrix sequels territory. In PHANTOM MENACE territory. Like spending two hours in the world's most contrived and annoying nightclub, looking backward as much as the original looked forward. The other standout

Saw the midnight premiere last night and I was blown away. The visuals are astounding and the story was surprisingly good. I don't get why every critic is bashing the screenplay so much.

But I must say I don't think this is a stand alone film that much. This is clearly an homage to the first Tron and I could've done without all the exposition explaining storylines from the first movie. Instead, I would've liked to hear more about the ISO's, which is the central plot point of the movie and

Also, like nemesis and vtxjosh said, the way they use TRON in the movie is so weird, from how they introduce him to how he exits the movie. And as much as I loved the soundtrack (and the Daft Punk cameo :P), I found that the music during the action scenes was a bit off (i.e. way too calm), especially near the end.

But as a whole, I absolutely loved the movie and, even though my expectations were pretty high, they managed to blow them out of the water,

I thought it was entertaining and I saw it at a true Imax so the 3D was great and I am not a 3D guy. I agree with nemesis, the title character should have had a much bigger role.

Good, not Great

Clu is not nearly as menacing as Sark or the MCP. While I did enjoy the movie and the story for the most part, the ending was extremely anticlimactic. After all of the buildup, I was expecting a fantastic final battle with either Clu, Tron or Flynn and it never happened. Tron also needed a much bigger role. If Tron would have had a great battle with Clu to save Flynn, I would be much happier right now.

I actually found Clu as a villain way more effective than Sark/MCP, but that's probably cause the idea of bringing Clu back as the villain was such a brillant move for fans of the first movie :P.
