What Did You Think? We want your X-Men: First Class review!

Jun. 3, 2011by:

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS wasn't winning any awards with its early promotional campaign. The first posters were laughable and the original trailer was OK but in a competitive summer, would OK cut it? Then the film started screening for critics and showing that a so-so promotional campaign doesn't always mean the movie isn't any good. In fact, many are saying X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is great (Chris Bumbray gave it a 9/10 in his review).

Well now we want to know what YOU think! As we often do, we're going to leave this article up all weekend with the Strike Backs open and encourage you to post YOUR review of X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. If you're so inclined, you can even post a review to your Movie Fan Central profile.

I say this often and it's just as important with this movie: PLEASE NO SPOILERS. And, as always, no attacking, flaming or insulting other users.

To help get you excited, I leave you with one of my favorite scenes from any X-MEN movie - the raid on the X-Mansion from X2: X-MEN UNITED:

Haven't seen it yet but wanted to warn everyone that does NOT want to have any surprises ruined in the film...DO NOT read mickey7926's post. There is a MAJOR SPOILER in there. Wish there had been a warning....but now that part is ruined for me, thanks bud. Didn't want someone else to get pissed off too.

First Class Resurrects the "X-Men"

I loved the film. Magneto is a total badass and McAvoy hit the nail on the character spot-on. While some say this is the best in the X-Men series, I'll have to disagree. X-Men and X2 were extremely entertaining for me in their time. Sure, they may have lost some value over time, but they were incredible films during the year(s) of their release. First Class ranks as my second best X-film after X2. Best aspect of the film is Fassbender, hands-down. The man knows how to deliver a performance, and

Will watch it again next week for sure.

HOLY SHIT

Its been a long, long time since a movie FELT like a Summer movie to me, but this one has it. The pacing and set up are superbly done and when the big action scenes happen they really have a lot of impact. I LOVED everything about Magneto's quest for revenge, and how Shaw's character was essentially his creator. Man, I just loved this movie. Sequel please, pronto!

3 and 1/2 stars

Not very familiar with the X-Men comics so, I am taking this origin film for what it is... and what it is, is one of the best movies of the summer and ranks with the best of the series so far. A great cast from leads McAvoy and Fassbender to the stunning and talented Jennifer Lawrence as a young Mystique, really make this character driven ensemble piece work. And that's not to imply that there isn't action, because there is plenty. It's just Matthew Vaughn skillfully mixes both quite well

And the film tells the story of the begininngs of the X-Men, especially Prof. X and Magneto who start as friends but, become foes. It cleverly does this among the chaos of the Cuban missile crisis which is actually a plot by villainous mutant Kevin Bacon to end humanity so mutants can take over the world. It's part superhero flick and part James Bond and all the more fun for it. A really well done and very entertaining and smart movie. I originally wasn't impressed with the trailers but, so happy to be proven wrong!

X-Men First Class is indeed makes X-Men movie fun again. I really like it. The chemistry between McAvoy and Fassebender is top notch. They carry the whole movie. I haven't felt excited about movie like this since The Dark Knight. Bring more X-Men First Class please!

Thank goodness

I thought this movie was going to just be another flick. It turned out to be more. I loved Magneto. This movie is like Breakfast Club with mutants. I like the story and feeling behind Mystique. The music was great. Kevin Bacon was awesome. My only problem, is the rest of the mutants didn't impress me. That fairy girl didn't fit in at all. Other than that, most of the scenes were intense and/ or fun.

Exceeded Initial Expectations

8/10 for me. I didn't really have high hopes for this film as I wasn't too keen on Cyclops and Jean Grey being written out and frankly I didn't like the line up of mutants they went with. However most of the performances were spot on, especially McAvoy and Fassbender, and also loved how they introduced the other characters. I liked the small hints and short cameos they showed to previous films. Didn't like Bacon that much but Jones and Flemyng were entertaining enough. All in all great film

An extremely entertaining time at the movies in early June. I really enjoyed it. Fassabender was excellent, scene stealing. I however felt like its flaws are that SO much was crammed into the movie that many things were rushed and looking back I would have enjoyed seeing a lot more of some of the character arcs. There was just so much character development that had to be skipped to move the story and other characters forward. Of course though, it is well handled. The story always moves forward

Thank you Matthew Vaughn for redeeming Fox for the travesties that were X-Men: The Last Stand and Wolverine. Move over Ian McKellan, there's a new Magneto in town.

Satisfying.

I thought it was great! Easily and inarguably the best in the series. It had a couple of super cheesy moments, but I feel like the great ones more than made up for it. (Almost-SPOILER ahead. Might as well avoid the rest of this paragraph if you haven't seen it yet) I can't believe the "surprise" cameo wasn't ruined for me before hand; it was great and everyone got a thrill out of it. It's typically the kind of thing where you see "Guess who the surprise cameo is?" and then a thumbnail spoiling

Overall I am very satisfied, yet I will always be eternally disappointed that this wasn't a reboot. It's truly depressing to think that this continuity ends with X-Men 3.

i was genuinely shocked by that one particular cameo in Xmen.
the ONE bad thing about Xmen was Beast's lame makeup.

Jennifer Lawrence's short skirts were amazing also

i loved prof. X and magnetos part, it was amazing, and kevin bacon was kick ass...as always, the only problem i had with it was the kids, mystique and angel i thought was horrible very cheesy lines, and january jones could of stood still and done a better job, but she was damn hot in those outfits so im kind of split on that.

Personally, I LOVED it. The best thing about the film was the chemistry between all the main characters, but especially Fassbender and McAvoy. Easily the best X-Men film except MAYBE the second one. Matthew Vaughn was a fantastic choice for director too.

My buddy who's a huge comic fan will hate it, I think, but as a casual fan of comics and a huge fan of movies I couldn't be happier. In fact, just read Chris Bumbray's review. He's pretty much spot on about everything, in my opinion.

Honestly, this is the best movie I've seen this year, and a worthy addition to the superhero film. The entire story hinges on great acting performances and a multi-layered emotional core instead of action scenes and set-pieces, and for that reason alone, it really feels special. Fassbender and McAvoy craft two of the best performances of the summer, and we're completely sucked into the outcome of their relationship. For this reason alone we're emotionally invested, and the rest of the movie

It was really good, props to Mathew Vaughn and Bryan Singer for exceeding all my expectations. Where there some goofy scenes, yes (the code name sequence was a bit of a groaner), were there some heavy handed references to future events and the race/sexual orientation allegory, totally (mutant and proud, really?); but the spirit of the X-Men was gracefully intact and it was oh so much better than X3 and Wolverine. I say bring on the new trilogy of period X-Men movies. And Jennifer Lawrence has

Don't worry

Nobody becomes an X-Man who isn't an X-Man in the comics. The only question is why Alex Summers is old enough to be Scott's father. Perhaps in the Singerverse Lorna Dane is Scott's mother.

X-Men First Class is First Class

I liked that off the bat it set itself appart from all other comic book films, the Charles and Eric relationship was what really made the film, I really liked how they tied that in with the formation of the team and the eventual forming of Charles X-Men and Magneto's brotherhood, I think it was as good as X2, awsome action, intense scenes, terrific cameos, hilarious moments, cleaver story and most importaintly... it was freakin EPIC! Seriously go see it you'll have a blast!

As a stand-alone movie it was great but....

....as a prequel it failed. (Spoilers) This movie totally messed up on some major things that throw off the continuity of this series. Granted, Wolverine did the same thing two years ago but this film didn't help much either. For example, Hank McCoy was the brains behind Cerebro? Where in X-Men (2000) it was established that Prof. X and Magneto designed it and that was how Magneto knew how to develop a helmet to keep out X's thoughts. On that same not, in First Class Magneto simply gets his helmet by stealing Shaw who had it developed by Russians. This is on the list a many continuity errors this film had but I found these to be amongst the most major. However, despite this, this film was still excellent and and far superior that either Wolverine or X-Men 3. I simply wish this would have been a stand-alone movie or a reboot as opposed to a prequel. Either way people, it is totally worth checking out. IMO, best movie to come out this summer so far.

I'm sorry to those below me but it HAS to be a prequel. They can say it's a reboot all they want but it opened up almost SHOT FOR SHOT like the first movie did. The first 2 minutes were almost exactly the same and I'm pretty sure they re-used some X1 footage for that scene. It was TOO close. You can't do that and get away with saying it's not related to the previous films.

Well, I said it many time before (and got thumbs down for it every time... Go figure...), but to avoid MOST (not all) continuity errors, you have to consider that the ONLY X-MEN movies that count are those where SINGER had a part). SO you consider X3 and Wolverine never existed and MOST (again, NOT ALL... And admittedly not the one you talked about) continuity errors vanishes !

Just flat-out awesome. Felt like a James Bond movie with all the Cold War biz plus the epic villain that Kevin Bacon did a rare, splendid effort portraying. Sure, they altered the original storyline of the heroes, but who gives a shit? I'm a die-hard Marvel comics fan and this movie's perfectly boss in my book.

Maybe to much for one film

I enjoyed it a lot. But I do think there was just too much stuff. There's the Magneto origin, the Xavier origin, the team-up with the cia, then finding mutants, training mutants, fight against the bad guy, fight against humans, fight against each other. It could have been two seperate movies.
In the end I wasn't convinced Xavier and Magneto were the bussom buddies they're supposed to be.

Easily my favorite X-Men film so far

I was already expecting something good from all the critics high praises, but sometimes that hurts a film when so many people like it. Such was not the case with this film where it actually exceeded expectations (lotta x comments in here folks, work with me). I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and was excited to see more. From the actors, sets, costumes, score and especially direction, this movie set the bar high for an exciting summer. I know some people will be put off from previous X-Men or

the greatest x-men movie ever, great script, great acting and great special effects, this summer's best movie. It has a different and better feel for a x-men film,it's smarter and more hip and as xavier likes to say "groovy" and yet so much fun and the cameo in the bar was freakin great, don't miss it.

Saw it today...and...

I've seen and followed every X-movie made and this was fantastic. I wish this is how they would've started it in 2000 and then graduated further into the series like they did earlier on...the cameo was perfect...thankful that Vaughn delivered and could still do more...

a great film

x men first class is proof you don't need to do a reboot to make a movie, just make the sequels better. and i enjoyed how this show was made, i love charles ladies man attitude, which will severly change once he's in the chair, that will humble him a bit, you know what rather than point by point i just thought this was a great not only comic movie but a great film, 5/5 perfectly balanced to me

Near perfect. Didnt make as much out of the golden age as the Incredibles, could have been even a bit more Bond'ish, but what a tasteful, smart and fun film. Best of the Xmen so far and the next one could be even better.

Impressive

Like many I was underwhelmed by what I was seeing of this movie via previews, but Vaughn managed to make a very good and very watchable film. The stuff with Magneto works very well (and I'm glad they went this route with him instead of giving him his own flick) and the stuff with the Hellfire Club was cool. Solid acting almost all around, cool visuals, good times!

Certainly was First Class

A really terrific film. Michael Fassbender stole the show but everybody wad great in it. James McAvoy has some really fun moments too. Bettered by X2 but not by much.

Awesome Fassbender

Movie was excellent, Fassbender stole every scene he was in and I am looking forward to seeing more movies with him.

McaVoy was really good as Prof X but again Fassbender stole the show.

Vaughn did an excellent job directing can't wait to see his next project either.

First class is correct!

This film was spectacular. there was never a dull moment the story was crafted perfectly. it had the best mutants shown in any X-Men movie thus far. honestly in my opinion this film was the best X-Men movie mad so far. id love to see Vaughn tackle another one as long as the story is good and its not only because of money. Brilliant performances all around in this film could possibly end up being the best superhero movie of the summer. Loved it! also one last thing the makeup and costumes

Truly good. 8 / 10

Wasn't expecting much from this movie. The great word of mouth is what got me into the theater. Despite all problems I have with the movie, I was completely pulled into this world again. Still love the first two X movies better, but this film managed to entertain thoroughly.

Let's set the record straight

If you're complaining about X-Men First Class conflicting with the comics, know that the story was taken from the story in Uncanny X-Men #161 which was set in 1962. From the Marvel Comics Database:

Gabby, meanwhile, desperately needing to love and be love, begins wooing Charles, who assents against his own better judgment.[6] Suddenly, they are attacked by Hydra. Israeli soldiers quickly come to their aid, but they are overmatched, and Charles is knocked unconscious by a bullet grazing his temple. The attackers capture Gabrielle and are escaping in their transports when one of them is suddenly and violently torn apart! However, the one carrying Gabrielle gets away. Charles saw Magneto alight with energy on the roof as the vehicle was destroyed, and asks him about it, to which Magnus responds he did what he had to do. They have a prisoner, and Xavier quickly extracts the information needed to track Gabrielle down.

Charles and Magnus infiltrate Hydra to discover that Gabby was programmed with directions to the Fuhrer's hidden gold reserve, hidden towards the end of the war. They use their powers to rescue Gabby, in the process revealing to each other what abilities they have, but ending up in the cave with the gold. Baron von Strucker attacks them, only to be easily defeated by Magnus' magnetic powers. Magnus punches a hole through the roof, levitates Charles and Gabby out it, followed by the gold, and then collapses the cave on Baron von Strucker as he leaves.

On top, Magnus and Charles have a philosophical confrontation, and Magnus flies off with the gold."

The story isn't exactly the same but nor was the story in X2 exactly the same as the story in the X-Men graphic novel God Loves Man Kills.

But the time line is about right: in the comics Xavier and Magneto did meet back in the early sixties before Xavier had formed the X-Men. The only problem is that Havok is too old and Iceman is too young which may confuse people when they read the comics.

This wasn't a bad movie per se but it wasn't that good either. It started quite well with the obvious James Bond atmosphere, but it became over-crowded very quickly. As a result, I didn't have much time to care about any character and I couldn't care less about whether it gets a sequel or not.

IMO, better than Ratner but not as good as Singer.

Very vague spoilers

Fantastic start! Disappointed this series' prime asset couldn't be explored beyond the first entry. Bringing powerful character arcs full circle comes at the expense of its most effective dynamic. They risk playing their best hand too soon. McAvoy and Fassbender are perfect. Vaughn has great material to play with here, action is reserved for just the right moments and relationships feel strong enough to carry a new franchise. The 60's serve as a better home for this story and it was devoid of

The 60's serve as a better home for this story and it was devoid of the silly antics from recent Marvel flicks like Thor (which I did enjoy). Looking forward to the sequels, more than the Avengers which seemingly string together 20 different movies with the exact same formula.

It was okay

The acting, direction, and most of the effects were really good. I had a few problems however. First was the script which I felt was really tongue in cheek and didn't fit the tone of the movie perfectly. Then the make-up effects I felt were really sub-par compared to the original films. Mystique just looked bad, and the Beast looked like a Jim Henson puppet (not bad in some films, but in this one felt out of place). Then there was Kevin Bacon, not his acting, which was just fine by me, but just

They could have done a better job on the bad guy. But I guess when you get an origin story you have to expect a weak villain to give the origin story room to flourish. The film was probably a high 6 or a low 7 for me. It had a large number of things go right for it, but I just can't look past its flaws and call it the best comic book film I've seen since The Dark Knight (an honor which is currently held by Kick Ass, also directed by Matthew Vaughn oddly enough).

Shaw wasn't "created" for the movie. HE IS one of X-MEN's arch enemies from the comics. And their wasn't any way bringing The Hellfire Club without him, really.
But, granted, he's not as developed as he could have been in the movie.

Granted that the hellfire club was a bit heavy on the cheese, with the whole victorian schtic, but it seems that Singer cant conceptualize the depth of the character. Bacon was excellent, but the writing was hollow. And Jones as Frost was awful, Alice Eve would have been spectacular.

A good movie, but not as great as some people made it out to be. Fassabender and McAvoy were great, as well as some of the supporting x-men. Bacon was great as Shaw, but the character was a bit disappointing since he'e written like a variation of Magneto. Overall a good movie, but doesn't come close to the greatness of X2, IMO.

I didn't like how "easily" Shaw died. Was hoping for a little more. I also loved Logan's cameo, that was funny.

I was pleasantly surprised with the film. McAvoy was good as well as Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon and Nicholas Hoult. Fassbender on the other hand was outstanding. January Jones as Emma Frost was underused IMO, hopefully more of her in a sequel. Didn't care for some of the vfx especially Havocs "weapon" and the submarine. Other scenes worked really well, namely magnetos chainattack and the more dramatic parts. Some jokes kinda fell flat being lame and I think it would have worked better with

Meh

Unlike everyone else it seems, I thought the movie was just okay. I felt it took way to long to get going, but once it did I enjoyed it. The couple nods to the previous films were awesome though. However, I did like the ending and thought it has potential for a great sequel. With that said, I definitely think Thor was a better movie.

It is the best Xmen movie made so far, but I would have liked to see what Vaughan would have done if Singer wasn't breathing down his neck. A lot of the movie felt like Singer was ghost directing (which isn't a good thing)instead of leaving Vaughan to do what he does best, action movies. Something Singer really still has no experience or comfort with doing. So until Marvel gets the rights back from Fox (and dumps any Singer involvement), this will stand as the best X-Men out there. For now. 7/10

I enjoyed it quite a bit and thought it was really fun, but it was definitely the cheesiest out of all of them and is not as good as the Singer movies.

Side-note: The costume Magneto wore at the end is a prime example of what works as a drawing not working on film and why comic books movies tend to take liberties with their costume designs. The costume McKellen wore in 1-3 was simplified and elegant, but still read as Magneto without looking garish.

When I said it was cheesy, I was referring to the overall tone of the film, not my nit-pick about the costume choice. But yes, Magneto's costume was worse than the leather X-Uniforms. It looked liked it was made from ill-fitting pajamas and a curtain topped with a horned bucket. The colors didn't even match either.

To each his own, but I wouldn't really go that far. First Class is top-notch, highly entertaining, and has a good story to serve as its engine. But it is far from being TDK. First Class is in a league above 95% of all superhero films, but in order to reach TDK it has to have an incredibly heavy story, real tragic scenes, villains so vile you want to stab them, and a hero so conflicted you're not sure if he's a hero at all. Plus, you need to sell all that WITHOUT being a visual extravaganza.

Fun film, great for second and third and Blu-Ray viewings, but it has its downsides and isn't TDK. Maybe its sequel could be.

I don't think there IS a right or wrong when it comes to this stuff. It's all about opinion, and I think that's what "To each his own" means. Different people have different opinions. So when someone says "To each his own but I wouldn't say..." that's just one person stating their opinion and saying up front that it differs.

Didn't like it. There's nothing particularly bad about it, but there's nothing great about it either. it's just sort of there, definitely the most boring X-Men film. And all this so called character development, aside from magneto, it's all too cliche and/or unbelievable. See that x2 scene they are showing above? There is not a single scene in First Class that is anywhere near as good as that.

Xavier and Magneto Needed More Screen-Time

I was a little disappointed. One of my favorite aspects of the previous X-Men films was the relationship between Xavier and Magneto, so coming into this film I was expecting so much more attention to be focused on their relationship and subsequent falling out. Little time was spent on it, so when they disband from each other it didn't have the emotional weight I was hoping for. There were so many characters introduced (including an underwhelming villain), the movie felt like it missed a lot of

Entertaining movie, but I still prefer the first two, to this film, by far.

But What I'm confused about is why all these sheep are attacking other peoples opinions when they don't agree with there own when uit comes too this movie. I'm sure I'll get attacked for this post. Everyone has a right too theyre opinion. Some people will love this movie, some people will hate this movie. Does that mean you have to post

I plan on waiting too see it, because as a fan of the X-Men this movie in my opinion isnt an X-Men movie. Should of been another origins movie like Magneto or Professor X. Cause the cast of mutants Singer & Vaughn selected for this movie are not and in some cases never were X-Men.

As a XFAN myself, I consider the movies and the comics to be 2 TOTALLY DIFFERENT continuity. This way the MAJOR DIFFERENCES between the movies and the 616 Marvel U are less choking. Beside, unlike the FF movies for instance, the continuity of the movies, thanks to Brian Singer, respected the SPIRIT of the

let the deluge of thumbs...

down begin. Yes, the performances were great, the McAvoy/Fassbender dichotomy was awesomely done. Yes, the direction was phenomenal, Vaughn has a distinct appreciation of superheroes and the feel of comic books, this was akin to watching a graphic novel unfold before your eyes. yes, the production value of the film is astronomical, very clean camera work and special effects. But one fact resonates through out this whole project; you cannot polish a turd. The turd I refer to is the script, or

But one fact resonates through out this whole project; you cannot polish a turd. The turd I refer to is the script, or rather the adaptation f the source material. Mr Singer has systematically destroyed every comic book title he has touched, with obvious and blatant disregard for over 50 years of comic book history. Yes, Mr.Singer is talented, but that talent is out shadowed but ego. Yes his work with original material is great, nay, awesome. But the awesomeness of his original material even matches his seeming abhorrence for other people's source material. Through out the movie you get that nagging feeling that something isn't right with the movie. So, yeah, thumbs down at will, but woy know what they say about the truth hurting and all.

You do realize that in the comics Beast and Banshee are older than Cyclops and Jean, right? And Bobby is the youngest? So Singer got that right. If Singer and Vaughn ignore X-Men The Last Stand and introduce Warren Worthington in the sequel will you be happy? You'd have seen their take on all five of the original X-Men.

And Alex is older than Scott? Besides, Logan is older than all of them and even he wasn't in the first class. Age is immaterial here, everything was done for a wow factor, Hank's secondary mutation didn't kick off till he left the x-men and was self inflicted, then he 'blue' 3rd phase was triggered in x-factor, which technically Fox can make into a flick because all the the xfactor characters were the first class. Even marvel admits that the Azazel story arc was bullshit. Any way, this total

I'm not seeing the rhyme here...I think you were going for Thor/sure, which, sorry, but that doesn't rhyme

I am sure most people will like it. Special effects are good. I for one didn't like the story at all and didn't care for any of the characters. The movie really feels like it was supposed to be a Magneto movie but someone at some point opted to change it for a new X-Men movie (maybe out of fear that a movie about Magneto without any X-Men wouldn't sell too well?).
I also thought the continuity with the previous X-Men movies didn't really work.

I think if they went with a reboot this movie

I think if they went with a reboot this movie would have worked a lot better. The 60s setting is cool but with a reboot instead of a prequel they could've went with a better selection of characters (ie, reusing the A list X-Men and not the B and C list ones) Although it's fun to see yellow and blue suits instead of black leather.

Fox originally promised a movie called X-Men Origins: Magneto but then what happened was X-Men Origins: Wolverine wasn't very good so they decided instead to bring back Singer so that they could recapture the feel of the first two X-Men movies.

Didn't feel much like X-Men

At times I felt like I was watching a boring foreign movie with all of the subtitles and moving around to different countries. None of the actors stood out...except, obviously, Kevin Bacon. The movie does get a little better as it goes on, but I promise you that you will FORGET that you even watched it the next day you wake up. Wait for rental.

Anyone who's argumenting a movie is bad because it has subtitles shouldn't be taken seriously.

Here's a thought: Maybe you DID walk into a hall screening a foreign movie and assumed it was X-Men? Maybe it also had someone who looks like Kevin Bacon in it? Also, your promise doesn't hold any value because I'm still thinking about it 3 days later.

X fail

Although a nice try, X-men First Class fails on so many factors. First off: the opening sequence, 2 minute of film from the first x-men movie. THE EXACT SAME! lame. Seen it in 1994 already. Second: character development. Boring.. The way the characters 'develop' in a 5 minute mid-film scene, in which they 'train' in a huge castle Xavier suddenly seemed to inherit or something.. All possible mental problems are solved in a week by the great omnipotent never-failing all knowing Xavier... Third:

All possible mental problems are solved in a week by the great omnipotent never-failing all knowing Xavier... Third: The friendship between Xavier and Magneto is suddenly there, no interesting things happen between the two of them, no bond is made, nothing. Instead we focus on some gay looking ginger with supersonic voice which sounds like a wailing baby and some chick looking like a wasp. CAREFACTOR?! Seriously, the good thing in this movie was Kevin Bacon (nice German and Russian accent, he was definitely the only one who made an effort) and the 3 second scene with Wolverine telling Xavier and Magneto to f*** off.!!!i was totally farking excited!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: Hollywood took over, nice special effects, lame story, b-actors in the war room seen in 1000 of movies, bad character development, worse moral, movie went on far too long.

Fun fact: read about a guy with an upside down bucket on his head posing as magneto at the premier, guess thats the type who are writing all these positive reviews

Didn't everybody knew about the Wolverine cameo?? It's like THE best part of an awful movie.

First: Learn to type. Second: Mocking fanboys while admittedly creaming your pants at a particular cameo is "farking" hilarious, you tool.
