What does Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg think of The Social Network?

09.27.2010

Given its story (the making of a website) and the famously reticent real-life billionaire behind it, it seems a bit strange that David Fincher's film THE SOCIAL NETWORK would be compelling viewing. But based on the almost universally positive response so far, that's very much the case.

But what does the film's actual subject, Mark Zuckerberg, think of the unofficial unveiling of his recent browser history? The Zuck (as his friends don't call him) was on Oprah last week and gave his two cents to the afternoon overlord herself.

If you are unable or unwilling to witness the proceedings below, Zuckerberg describes the movie as "fun" but not necessarily indicative of his experience: "I can promise you, this is my life so I know it’s not that dramatic. The last six years have been a lot of coding and focus and hard work, but maybe it would be fun to remember it as partying and all this crazy drama."

Interesting

Nice to see Oprah care about schools in America & not africa.

Zucker seems like an extremely nice dude. I hope they make a movie about him someday.

Does the video mention if Zuckerberg has actually *seen* the movie?

I have no sound on this computer, so I can't check.

As for some of the comments below, I'm noticing a lot of people making assumptions based on what they've read, probably from other people who haven't seen the film. As for some of the comments below, I'm noticing a lot of people making assumptions based on what they've read, probably from other people who haven't seen the film. Zuckerberg's quote in the above article is telling; as depicted in the film, Zuckerberg is typically depicted as obsessively driven, coding and working hard, becoming more socially withdrawn even as his website is supposed to bring people together; his "wild partying" never rises above conventional college silliness, and even then it's quite limited. People searching for a geek ANIMAL HOUSE will have to look elsewhere.

As for "crazy drama", the fact that the man got sued by his best friend does indeed make for a compelling story. If they made up stuff for the movie there, fine by me. Print the legend.

I've noticed two posters below take Zuckerberg's ambivalence as some sort of vindication, a moment to brag "I told you so", but since no party involved in that situation seem to have seen the film, they render their own argument moot.

Now, I *have* seen the movie. It's brilliantly written. I wish it had a stronger ending - not because "the ending is happening right now", but because it doesn't feel that the story the film tells seems like it has a logical resolution that it stops short of telling us.

Is it brilliant? Some people seem to think so. It's undeniably one of the best-made of the year, but it didn't strike as intense a chord with me. Andrew Garfield is very, very good; his Eduardo Saverin has the lion's share of character ups and downs, and he plays it beautifully. Jesse Eisenberg also plays a great Mark Zuckerberg, but as his character becomes less connected from his friends, coding and working more and talking and doing less, the film switches more over to Justin Timberlake's Shawn Fanning, who isn't nearly as interesting. Justin's performance is better than the character he's playing.

Who is the target audience for this? The obvious answer is "anyone who likes to see GOOD movies", but more specifically, anyone who likes wel-written character studies, or courtroom dramas; Aaron Sorkin's dialogue is snappy, funny and smart, so anyone who likes a good dark comedy; David Fincher's stamp is all over this, from the coffee-tinged color palette to the playing with lenses (a rowing scene is shot with tilt-lenses to make the whole thing seem smaller and less relevant than it seems), so anyone who likes stylish filmmaking. If none of these things are of interest to you, that's fine - there'll be tons of other choices for you in October. But denying that a sizable target audience exists for the film is lazy and ignorant. I run a cinema and I get a lot of people asking about the film (in contrast to stuff like SCOTT PILGRIM, which was a phenom online and nowhere else, despite how good it was). People are interested.

Enjoy THE SOCIAL NETWORK, everyone. You'll probably like it more than I did.

I don't know about Zuckerberg himself and this Oprah interview, but the movie is amazing. I caught a screening last week and it blew my mind. I wasn't that interested going in, but I came out telling all my friends that this is one of the best movies of the year. Fincher could film paint drying and make it look great. The script is excellent, too. 9/10

Terrible

What an awful idea for a movie. Someone tell me who the audience for this movie is supposed to be? It's a repeat of Scott Pilgrim: 96% of people here claim it's wonderful, and then 99% of them will say, "Wow, how come this movie didn't do well in the box office?"

BECAUSE THERE IS NO TARGETED AUDIENCE

Just because I've used Facebook religiously for four years doesn't mean I want to watch a movie about 20 year old guys whining about how they should make more money.

Why do you care about the target audience? It's not for you to worry about. You're a viewer. (If you view it.) We have to stop listening to box office numbers and being mini execs. Watch it or don't. No one cares who it's marketed towards except those involved.

@Noct: Completely agree. If the film is great (and apparently it is), it could make 100 bucks at the box-office for what I care. I'll still watch it and enjoy it.

Can't wait to see it. Most anticipated movie of the year after The Town (which was great).
Is it fiction or non-fiction? Who the fuck cares? Noone who loves movies anyway.

This is why I always thought that the Facebook movie was just silly. I knew that they would take something simple and mundane and blow it into an overly dramatic & unnecessarily dark movie. They could have made this same work of complete fiction about anything really.

But doesn't that just represent what Facebook really is? A glory hole. People over dramatizing their lives on the internet with crazy parties and photos of yourself? I haven't seen the move but this sounds more and more like a fair representation of what Facebook the movie is. What any social network is. It's youtube, facebook and all things self indulgent rolled into one movie.

This movie just sounds better and better the more I hear about it.

Sounds to me like you're trying way too hard to invent substance for a movie you've never seen simply because it's David Fincher.

HAHAHA

Everyone hated me for saying this was stupid because there's no stoy here. And it turns out the truth of the matter - not the movie - has no story whatsoever. I think I'll PASS.

If the movie is brilliant (like everyone says it is), does it really matter if it's an exagerated version of the truth?
