What does the future hold for Transformers? Producer Don Murphy might know

Jul. 8, 2011by: Niki Stephens

Michael Bay is focusing on dark comedy for his next effort, but don't worry, producer Don Murphy sees more TRANSFORMERS movie fun in your future.

Murphy, who has been a producer on each TRANSFORMERS film made some comments on his personal forums about the future of the franchise. This is what Murphy had to say:

"What happens next? Certainly not a reboot. We haven't lost the Transformers. They didn't grow up or become expensive like Toby Maguire. I don't know what happens next. I'm pretty sure there will be a second trilogy. I am pretty sure it will kick ass. And I am pretty sure some of you will hate it because it wasn't all bots."

Bay says he's done. I'm sure he will produce in some capacity. Plus, if the rumors are true, Jason Statham could take part in that second trilogy. For some reason, I don't really see it happening though.

Why not?

It made so much money, they'll be stupid to stop making more. I'm very interested to see how other potential directors take on Transformers, less humans, more robots please.

Meh, you couldn't do an all-bots movie with those models anyway. ILM came up with technically impressive Transformers, sure, but they're too alien, too visually complicated, and too homogeneous for audiences to be able to connect with them. Unlike the cartoon, where bots had clearly defined human anatomy, faces - even the covered ones - that deformed the way we'd expect, and eyes with expression, these movies actually *need* humans to connect with the audience.

Had they gone with an aesthetic similar to the newer "Transformers Animated" series, they could've had the whole thing take place on Cybertron with no mention of Earth at all and people would've loved it. But with ILM's inhuman character designs, doing something like that would be akin to making a movie that only contained Xenomorphs and no one else: nobody would be able to relate to anything on screen.

Ah, so he admits the human characters are utterly pointless and replaceable.

Is it so much to ask for a movie that doesn't have 90 mins of lame comedy that has nothing to do with the Transformers and is then punctuated by repetitive loud and annoying action sequences?

They don't need to "all bots", but I think we can agree they should be mostly about the bots. That was the biggest flaw with this trilogy. I like Alfred as much as the next guy, but I wouldn't make him the center of a batman movie.

Jason Statham... WTF?

Not really sure why Jason Statham has any attachment to the franchise, but OK, whatever. I think it was obvious that more TF movies are going to happen. It's inevitable.

How about getting Spielberg to actually direct one?

Not interested. The only good one was TF1. Yes the visuals on all of them have been great, but that only takes you so far. Unless they actually make a decent story..I'm out. Already regretting paying for TF3, should have waited for Netflix. BTW..what is up with the Maguire dig out of no where? What a douche!

What about a Prequel?

Everything has a prequel nowadays, why not Transformers? I'd like to see the early days of Cybertron, the battle, how Optimus Prime and Megatron met and all that. I did watch the cartoon but it's been years so I don't remember. I think concentrating on that would be amazing. Of course, there may not be any humans involved.

The movie made money because it wasn't all bots! If the entire movie was all bots, nobody would have gone to see it except for the fanboys who, regardless of what you might think, aren't a large enough audience to bring in the numbers needed to justify that kind of budget.

"I am pretty sure it will kick ass", HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, what a moron, this guy is in complete denial, the only ass that the transformers kicked, was our wallets and that was about it.
the trilogy sucked major ass, and i really hope there wont be another, at least in the foreseeable future.

As long as Peter Cullen gets locked down, then it's all good. Maybe Judd Nelson could get involved as HotRod, giving Chevy the excuse to debut that new updated red Chevelle that's been rumored for a few years now.

Here's what Transformers needs in its new trilogy to essentially kick ass and top the visual awesomeness of Michael Bay. Get JJ Abrams to direct. It's obvious the man knows how to make things look real and visually stunning. Plus, he's got connections with ILM and Spielberg. Next, get an action star instead of a kid. I vote Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Pair him with the Autobots. Then, get a scribe who knows about good story. I'd say Damien Lindleoff (who's also good with JJ). Focus on the Bots,

Is it just me or is this guy a douche? Yeah, the problem with "Spider Man 3" was how much Maguire asked for it, and not that Avi Arad demanded things that the director that made those movies possible hated.

Did they plan on just replacing the director? Maybe I missed something, but I thught Maguire walked because Rami did. I was not aware there was ever talk of keeping Maguire on for a 4th, without Rami.

Animations the way to go

I haven't seen the third movie yet (I plan on seeing it very soon) but a new trilogy would be a disaster. These movies costs a shit ton to make. Coming from a person who lives in chicago and saw how huge of a production this film was (and that was just a mere portion of the locations filmed around the world) There is no way they can keep shelling out that kind of money. Especially if Bay is not involved. Love him or hate him you gotta admit Bay knows how to handle a big movie. What amateur

I think the only way to go is to make a kick ass trilogy of animated movies. Make it in the vein of the more gritty animated films from DC everyone raves about. That means make it hardcore PG 13 Robots destroying shit. Since it's animation the level of destruction could be huge. Plus this would give them a chance to make it alittle more like the old cartoon but still keep it in the Bay-universe if they want. Hell shia can do voice work if he doesn't want to do the live action anymore. Plus Bay stays on as producer and everyone's going to the bank happy. Release them in theaters even. Could be badass in 3D.

Cool

You know, people hate on these movies all over, but as each sequel comes along, there are those same haters at the box office pluckin down their money to go see it. Theyre fun movies to just sit back and watch some shit blow up. Party Movies. If people really hated these movies that much, they wouldn't be making hundreds of millions of dollars every time one comes out. Bring one more.
