What does this Ant-Man centric image from Edgar Wright tell us?

May. 7, 2012by: Paul Shirey

With the smashing box office of THE AVENGERS this past weekend it's frozen in carbonite that there will be an onslaught of Marvel movies to continue to flow out to the masses, one of which is the ever-in-development ANT-MAN film, which has had director Edgar Wright (SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, HOT FUZZ) attached for the longest time.

This morning, via Twitter, Wright tweeted the following pic with the attached cryptic message:

"Received this in the mail. What can it mean?"

Is it a message from Marvel to get his ass to work?  Is it an obsessed fan telling him to do the same?  Is it Simon Pegg jockying for the lead?

Okay, let's all just calm down for a second here.  We all know that Wright is currently working on the Johnny Depp starrer THE NIGHT STALKER as well as the third part of his Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy (a.k.a. The Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy), THE WORLD'S END.

So, when does that leave time for ANT-MAN?  And, would it be in time for a second Avengers film?  Oh, so much speculation.  More teases than a blindfolded lap dance.

For those not well-versed in who Ant-Man/Hank Pym is, check out the Marvel wiki here.

Personally, I'm excited to see Wright's vision of ANT-MAN as I'm a big fan of his work and I think he's got the chops to deliver a kick ass comic book film (and, yes, I recognize SCOTT PILGRIM as just that) for Marvel.

This probably isn't the last tease we'll have before they stop f*cking around and start shooting this damn thing, so don't get too comfortable.  Still, at least they're kinda moving forward, even if it's just with some half-assed placard.

Stay tuned as this puppy continues to develop.

Extra Tidbit: All right, let's hear your top choice for Hank Pym/Ant Man. We've already covered Nathan Fillion, so let's hear some new contenders.

Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Simon Pegg, michael Cera, or Matthew McConaughey would all be fine in the role.

Sounds like a role for Michael Cera, considering the hero has some "size" issues. ;)

I'll be honest

I'm not going to lie and say I know a lot about Ant-Man, but I really want to see Adrien Brody in a superhero film, especially seeing how beefed up he can get after PREDATORS. If there's some good reasons why he would not be right for the role, I'm glad to hear them.

I would rather see Black Panther introduced as the next super hero from the Marvel Universe. They already have chitari and vibranium, and both of those are tied to Wakanda and Black Panther.

Ya fanboys need to get off this Nathan Fillion bromance thing & cast him in everything. This movie certainly has to be made if they go the same route leading up to the Avengers sequel. Fans will be expecting much more next go round.

Would this film fit into the current Marvel movie universe or would it be like the X Men and Spiderman films as a stand alone?

Nathan Fillion....yes, I'm not kidding

I'll be voting for him again and again, because guess what? He didn't actually get cast in any big movies. Fans are foaming on their mouth for a reason you know.

Otherwise, Alan Tudyk, another Browncoat.

I want to see an Ant-Man movie asap!
It'd be a nice way to introduce Ultron for, let's say, an Avengers 3 movie. You start Ant-Man with Ultron 1 at the beginning of the movie and secret after credit scene shows Ultron 2 starting to act suspicious and evil-ish.
Tidbit: I'd like to see Simon Pegg as Hank Pym but I'd be more than ok with Fillion too. Seems like he and his fans deserve to see him in his own blockbuster movie.

I always tough the Ant-Man movie was for Eric O'Grady (Ant-Man III) and not the classic Hank Pym version, especially with Edgard Wright attached to the project.

How do you make an Eric O'Grady Ant-Man movie without Pym?

Ant-Man ROCKS!!!!

If you even research his character at all you will see how interesting he is. His character is one of the smartest people in the Marvel Universe, yet he has mental issues and attitude problems with the people he works with. He is a very complicated character, and the relationship between him and Wasp is very realistic, dealing with the ups and downs of a marriage including some physical abuse and eventually divorce.

He creates Ultron to stop all the violence in the world, but ends up killing

To the guy below who want to know who will watch this, I will watch this.

Everyone's missing the point

Think about what Marvel is trying to bring into their movie "universe" with an Ant Man film: Dr. Hank Pym and his Pym Particles.
With an "Ant Man" movie, we get Dr. Hank Pym. With Pym, we get Pym Particles, which gives us Ant Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket and even The Wasp.
.....Also, with Dr. Hank Pym, we get: Ultron.
Marvel is being very forward-thinking with this property. One that may lead to a very probable Avengers sequel villain.

Seriously, do we need a Marvel version of Honey I Shrunk the Kids? This has to be Disney's doing....

I have as much faith in Edgar Wright as Joss Whedon which is to say I respect the guy immensely. I'm intrigued to see what his vision for Ant-Man is but I always thought his comedic sensibility and fast paced style would better suit The Flash. Either way can't wait for this project and the two you mentioned (World's End and Kolchak). If Joss Whedon can't come back for Avengers 2, I think Edgar Wright would make a perfect replacement.

Am I the only one who wants to see a Black Panther and Dr.Strange movie way more than Ant-Man? Don't get me wrong Wright is the best guy for the job, but if I had to choose between these three movies based on superheroes alone, I'd definitely want to see Dr.Strange followed by Black Panther, and then maybe Ant-Man.
