What pop songs will serve as the big musical numbers in Sucker Punch?

Mar. 1, 2011by: Mike Sampson

It was more evident in the Comic-Con footage from 2010, but all the trailers and footage for SUCKER PUNCH since have almost completely downplayed the fact that there is a serious musical element to the film. I haven't seen the film yet so I can't be clear how exactly they tie into the film but I do remember the girls mentioning they studied as much dance choreography as they did fight choreography (I also remember thinking there was as much MOULIN ROUGE in the film as there was PAN'S LABYRINTH or LORD OF THE RINGS).

But now that the soundtrack listing has been revealed, we get a clearer idea on what songs will be propelling the film and which actress will be leading that song. It's an odd mix that includes The Eurythmics, Queen, The Beatles and The Pixies. Here's the full listing including who sings the song in the film and who originally recorded the song:

1. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - Emily Browning (originally The Eurythmics)

2. Army Of Me (Sucker Punch Remix) - Bjrk featuring Skunk Anansie

3. White Rabbit - Emiliana Torrini
 (originally Jefferson Airplane)
4. I Want It All/We Will Rock You Mash-Up - Queen with Armageddon Aka Geddy

5. Search And Destroy - Skunk Anansie (originally The Stooges)

6. Tomorrow Never Knows - Alison Mosshart and Carla Azar
 (originally The Beatles)
7. Where Is My Mind? - Yoav featuring Emily Browning
 (originally The Pixies)
8. Asleep - Emily Browning

9. Love Is The Drug - Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac (originally Roxy Music)

"White Rabbit" seems a little obvious given the movie but OK. I haven't been hearing good things about the film from people who've seen early cuts but it's so...out there, I can't write it off completely. Below we've got a sample of the soundtrack in the form of Skunk Anansie's cover of "Search and Destroy" so take a listen and ponder SUCKER PUNCH.

I thought the Watchmen soundtrack was really good.

Still excited as hell for this movie.

Surprised to see Jena Malone isn't singing on any of the tracks since she actually does sing in a band. Also, Sweet Dreams, White Rabbit, and Where is My Mind are overused and too predictable. Still looking forward to this.

Especially Where is my Mind that will forever be labeled as "that song at the end of Fight Club".

I understand a female voice might serve the scene, but its really too bad they didnt use theone and only Iggy and the Stooges version, it is so much more potent. Funny how they copied almost identically each little vocal distortion of Mr Osterberg.

Looking forward to it, but keep feeling like I will be disappointed. I really liked Watchmen but thought Snyder picked some songs that just didn't fit. This list for SuckerPunch doesn't intrigue me at all.

Slippery Snyder

Is it just me, or are Zack Snyder's movies getting lamer? Looks like the product of an insane 13 year old with a Sailor Moon fetish.

Please Snyder, do not use any superman songs in yuor superman movie. You know the ones I'm talking about. Let's just keep the music purely orchestral for the score. You don't want the film to come off like one of the weaker smallville episodes.

So is this movie trying to do everything?

In Watchmen, Snyder just used songs that were mentioned in the comic. Dawn of the Dead was so so, Johnny Cash was perfect during the opening credits and then he went with shitty Disturbed, so I don't know how much he knows about music or what so i reserve judgement

Hmmm...

I hear Zepplin in the first extended trailer. Can we throw a little Soundgarden in there too now that they are back...and apparently going old school...???

One word comes to my mind

in describing these covers: Neutered

At least "Army of Me" is just modified. To what extent though?

Fehhhh

I was excited about this film at first, but the more I'm seeing, the worse it looks. It just looks like a complete mess. And to make matters worse, the whole musical thing just smacks of girl-power. I'd rather just watch Watchmen again. If you're gonna make a movie about bombast and violence, then make a movie about bombast and violence. Don't make it PG13 and fill it with fruity pop covers and burlesque dancing.

Lame

Snyder couldn't pick appropriate soundtrack music if....if.....

I dunno, just fuck Zack Snyder.

(Emiliani Torrini's cover of White Rabbit is awesome, but its an over-used song)
