What will you be watching this weekend? (August 24)

Watchoo Watchin'?!

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday, we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…

IN THEATERS…

Premium RushThis weekend is all about speed, hot damn speed!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt puts his feet to the pedals this weekend in PREMIUM RUSH as a bike messenger that finds himself being chased by a dirty New York cop over a mysterious envelope that he must deliver. I don’t know what you call it when you perform parkour while on two wheels but if the trailer for PREMIUM RUSH is anything to go by it might as well be called insanely badass.

On a related note; has anyone else noticed that JGL seems to be popping up in movies all over the place this Summer? We’re just going to go ahead and file that one in the “Not A Problem” Department.

Two tires not your style? Want some horses under the hood? Earlier this week HIT & RUN, the new R-Rated car-centric action comedy from the producers of THE WEDDING CRASHERS, drifted into theaters. Starring the real-life couple of Dax Shepard and Kristin Bell HIT & RUN finds them on a high speed roadtrip chased by the Feds led Tom Arnold and a crew of criminals led by a dreadlocks sporting Bradley Cooper.

The car stunts in HIT & RUN are all reportedly done the old fashioned way (real stuntdrivers with balls of steel) which is reason enough for me to give this one a try, be sure check out the official JoBlo review right over here.

ON TELEVISION…

LouisThe final season of AMC’s BREAKING BAD is really starting to heat up now last weeks episode saw some serious sh*t hit the fan and it looks like it’s up to Walt (Bryan Cranston) to take care of some business. This weekend features the seventh episode of the fifth season and there are only nine left …

As you’re aware by now I have a certain affinity for HBO’s new series THE NEWSROOM and this weekend is the season one finale. The show has covered a lot of ground in a short time but the aspect that really draws me in is the brilliant character interactions, I have a feeling Aaron Sorkin’s writing could have something to do with that. After this Sunday begins the long wait for season two … that’s going to suck.

I hate falling behind on my favorite shows so I’m definitely going to take some time this weekend to catch up on a couple of I’ve fallen behind on. Starting with FX’s brutally honest and funny as hell LOUIE starring the great comedian Louis C.K. LOUIE just might be (it is) the funniest TV show out there right now and I’ve somehow managed to not watch any of this season yet, I think it’s time for me to remedy that grievous error.

ON DVD & BLU-RAY…

The Dictator BDI opted out of catching Sacha Baron Cohen’s THE DICTATOR in theaters mainly because I thought I was tired of his schtick but the sheer lunacy of this role put it on my rental radar. So this weekend I’ll be checking out the “Banned and Unrated” version of THE DICTATOR on Blu and if it is full of blatantly shameless scenes like this it’ll be a good ol’ politically incorrect time.

Also out this week is BERNIE starring Jack Black and Mathew McConaughey. I don’t think it is very often that you can take a true story of murder and turn it into a light hearted comedy but somehow director Richard Linklater (DAZED & CONFUSED) and a large ensemble cast seem to have pulled it off. BERNIE kind of flew under my radar but JimmyO really dug it and if it’s good ’nuff for The ‘Stache I’m willing to give it a try.

Call me a sap but, like so many of you, I was raised on animated Disney flicks and this weekend sees not one classic get the Blu-ray upgrade but five (if you count sequels)! They include the swinging 1970’s THE ARISTOCATS and a POCAHONTUS double-feature. But the one I’m most excited about is THE RESCUERS/THE RESCUERS: DOWN UNDER “35th Anniversary” Blu-ray set. DOWN UNDER is easily one of my favorite childhood Disney flicks and I can’t wait to pick it up, even if it’s just for nostalgia’s sake.
