What will you be watching this weekend? (August 3rd)

Watchoo Watchin'?!

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday, we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…

IN THEATERS…

TotalRecallThis weekend sees a totally Mars-less TOTAL RECALL remake and a sequel to the popular kid franchise (I assume it’s popular because it is now officially a trilogy) in DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: DOG DAYS.

When I first heard they were doing a remake of the 1990 Schwarzenegger sci-fi classic TOTAL RECALL I didn’t think much about it. Then I heard they were nixing Mars which, while closer to the literary source material, kind of bummed me out. Then I saw the trailer and found myself totally on board with Colin Farrell’s take on Doug Quaid. Then I read Chris Bumbray’s disappointing review … so I’m not expecting it to surpass the original TOTAL RECALL but I hear the chick with three boobs makes is back so it won’t be a total loss.

For those of you with lil’ Schmoes the next installment of DIARY OF A WIMPY KID hits screens this weekend with DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: DOG DAYS. My little cousins seemed to enjoy the hell out of the first flick so I might be end up being the guy to see this one with them come Sunday … or at least that’s what our alibi will be when their parents asked what we saw when in reality I’m just going to take them to see THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Yeah, I’m the cool cousin you wish you had when you were ten and your parents wouldn’t let you see PG-13 flicks.

ON TELEVISION…

XXX OLYMPICSSo how ’bout them OLYMPICS?

While I hate the fact that I have to wait until 8pm to see any decent coverage here in the States I have witnessed some pretty amazing feats so far and considering my proposed Olympic drinking game from last weekend’s tidbit I have managed to stay relatively sober. With the 2012 games around the halfway I expect some pretty epic feats of human endurance and skill in the next week … and I’m not just talking about my liver.

You can continue to follow the the 30th SUMMER OLYMPICS  on their official site and stream live footage via NBC right here!

On my regularly scheduled TV programming the past couple of weekends I only seem to have time to catch a few shows but I make up for lack of quantity with quality. HBO’s THE NEWSROOM continues to be a new favorite as well as AMC’s BREAKING BAD which at this point everyone should be aware of how awesome this show is. BREAKING BAD fans; be sure to check in each Monday for our “Lily in the Valley” episode recap column.

ON DVD & BLU-RAY…

TotalRecall BDOh, what a coincidence! The original Arnold Schwarzenegger TOTAL RECALL hit Blu-ray shelves this week and for any of you purists out there that don’t feel the remake is worth your time maybe this will be a solid substitute. I’ll be picking it up eventually for the hilariously goofy audio commentary compliments of Schwarzenegger and director Paul Verhoeven. This is the second time TOTAL RECALL has received a Blu-ray release and I feel there is some irony in there some where … regardless it still has that chick with three boobs, so I’m in!

If you’re a fan of screen and sex icon Marilyn Monroe the FOREVER MARILYN Blu-ray boxed set is the one you’ve been waiting for. Containing seven of her films (five for the first time ever on Blu-ray) this set is a fitting tribute to the starlet that left the cinematic world too soon 50 years ago. I might have to pick this one up for potential date night fare … fine you caught me, I’m getting it for the Marilyn Monroe musicals.

Did any of you catch The History Channel’s brilliant HATFIELDS & MCCOYS mini-series from a couple months back? It starred Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton as a couple of Civil War veterans turned patriarchs on opposite sides of a very bloody and very real family feud that would become legendary. The 3-part mini-series packs a punch and I feel serious congrats should go to The History Channel for this unexpected surprise that hit DVD and Blu-ray shelves earlier this week.
