What will you be watching this weekend? (July 13)

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday, we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…

IN THEATERS…

Moonrise Kingdom PosterIt looks to be a slow weekend in theaters with the only real big release today being ICE AGE 4: CONTINENTAL DRIFT, which might be good entertainment for the kidfolk but for the rest of us this should be a solid weekend for catching up of any flicks you’ve been putting off over the last few weeks. Also, while this may be old news to some of you geographically luckier Schmoes, I’m pretty stoked because after waiting out a limited release for over a month it looks like Wes Anderson’s MOONRISE KINGDOM is finally coming to my local theater. I’ve only read good things on Anderson’s latest and JoBlo’s own Eric Walkuski dug it, so bring on the quirk!

I guess everyone else just didn’t want to release a movie too close to next weekends highly anticipated conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, which is probably a smart move considering it will dominate the box office for the next several weeks.

ON TELEVISION…

Breaking BadAll hail to the king baby! I think it’s safe to assume many of you already know how utterly awesome Bryan Cranston is as Walter White, a science teacher turned crystal meth kingpin, on AMC’s BREAKING BAD, so it almost goes without saying that it’s one of the best shows on TV right now. With the fifth and final season kicking off this Sunday all I really have to say is thank the TV deities for DVR because mine is going to get a serious workout between BREAKING BAD and THE NEWSROOM. Have any of you checked out A&E’s new show LONGMIRE yet? I have been seeing trailers for it everywhere and I have to say I’m intrigued, maybe it’s the Western vibe this crime-drama is putting off or it could just be the thought of Katee Sackhoff with a badge and gun … either way it’s another Sunday night show that’ll be getting some DVR love.

And it can’t be a real weekend without me sitting on a couch watching others be active! I always kind of tune out baseball until after the all star break but now I’m totally ready for my MLB season to begin, go Mariners!

ON DVD & BLU-RAY…

American Reunion BDWhile it’s not a very strong weekend for theatrical releases I’m happy to report that isn’t the case on the homefront. While I wasn’t sold on the idea of AMERICAN REUNION I couldn’t help but be curious on where the AMERICAN PIE crew has ended up 13 years later (honestly, I’m just surprised Tara Reid is still alive) but the perpetual juvenile crassness of Stifler is more than enough reason to check this out on Blu-ray. Also out this week is the long maligned release of MARGARET. Starring Anna Paquin this movie was completed half a decade ago but when director Kenneth Lonergan refused to edit down his 3 hour cut the studio execs put the movie in cold storage. It only finally received an uber-limited release last year, albeit to some serious critical acclaim, but now that it’s out on disc I can’t wait to see if the five year battle was worth it. Now maybe you think you’re above watching cartoons but in the case of ADVENTURE TIME you’d be completely wrong. This fantastical animated show is simply brilliant and the complete first season just hit DVD shelves so there’s no better time to check it out than now!
