What will you be watching this weekend? (July 6)

Jul. 6, 2012by: Jacob Riley

Watchoo Watchin'?!

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday, we'd like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So what's on your movie agenda this weekend? Here's what I'm thinking about watching...

IN THEATERS...

Savages PosterThis weekend is full of superhero reboots, pop singers and drug cartel carnage ... which means there should be a little something for everyone. Tobey WhoGuire? I cheated on you Schmoes a bit and caught THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN earlier this week and Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker/Spider totally made this quick reboot worth checking out and for the record Emma Stone looks pretty great as a blonde. I'm not saying it's the best Spidey yet, but I'm not saying it isn't either. Remember that Justin Bieber concert bio-pic from a year or so ago? Good, niether do I ... but it must have made serious bank because on July 4th KATY PERRY: PART OF ME exploded into theaters and I can't help but wonder what she looks like in 3DD (the second "D" was deliberate). The movie that really has me excited though is Oliver Stone's SAVAGES, a hard-R kidnapping flick infused with drugs, guns, love triangles and an ensemble cast that would make Tarantino drool. Say whatever you want about Stone's movies but he never has been one to shy away from brutal violence when necessary but does he get it right with this flick? If you haven't already checked out Chris Bumbray's review of SAVAGES do so right over HERE.

ON TELEVISION...

Duck DynastyIt's looking to be a lazy weekend in front of the tube but there are a few things to keep an eye out for in your channel surfing. What happens when a family of rednecks strike it rich with their duck call company? They make a ridiculous reality show and call it DUCK DYNASTY. Episode topics range from catching frogs at your local golf course for dinner to showing up to career day at the school and scaring kids with 'Nam war stories. If that sounds like a good time (it is) A&E is having a DUCK DYNASTY marathon starting tonight, put me down for a couple of hours! I'm still hooked on HBO's THE NEWSROOM and I think it is safe to say I'll be tuning in every Sunday to see what Aaron Sorkin and Co. cook up, is anyone else getting into this show too? On the sports front it looks to be a wheel-centric weekend with NASCAR at Daytona Beach on TNT and TOUR DE FRANCE chugging along on NBC. While neither are really my bag I like to watch them for the crashes, does that make me a bad person? You totally do it too, don't judge!

ON DVD & BLU-RAY...

Barbarella BDThis week see's a couple of awesome surprises on the homefront. THE HUNTER, which seems to have slipped under my radar entirely, is coming straight to disc but don't write it off just yet as it stars Willem Dafoe as a mercenary hired to track down the last Tasmanian tiger but locals, including Sam Niell, might the more dangerous quarry. Also out this week is GOD BLESS AMERICA, a subversive dark comedy with a premise I think we may have all fantasized about; a hitman and girl go on a killing spree to rid America of the dumbest and most annoying celebrities. But I think this weeks winner for coolest cover art  goes to 1968's BARBARELLA. The fun Jane Fonda starring sci-fi camp classic is making it's Blu-ray debut and if that retrotastic artwork isn't enough to get you to pick up a copy maybe seeing this titillating opening credit sequence in glorious hi-def will be.

LET US KNOW WHAT YOU WILL BE WATCHING THIS WEEKEND BELOW!

Extra Tidbit: Most of my regular shows are between seasons so I'm open for suggestions for something with new episodes coming out right now. So what you got for me?

If there is any hope left...

I will try to catch Savages. A little peeved that the reviews are mixed, but I don't want to miss a hard R movie by Stone that just might piss me off. May rent American Reunion if time permits, because c'mon...who doesn't love those guys and gals? Plus, Jim's dad. And Louie and Wilfred are resting comfortably in the DVR...

Savages is at the theatre. Bullhead is VOD. The Amazing Spider-Man is available if time permits. Otherwise, McTeague is a good read, as are Wednesday's comics (Ferals, Hack/Slash, Man-Thing, GI Combat).

I hear the HBO show "The Newsroom" is very good but I will never watch it because of the colossal cunt Jane Fonda is in it. I am blown away that Jane Fonda still gets work after she turned her back on our country and got a number of US. P.O.W. soldiers (Vietnam) executed. You should not be given a second chance in Hollywood or life for committing TREASON that lead to the death of other Americans.

I picked up the director's cut of Mimic on Blu-ray. I'm curious to see how different it is from the theatrical cut. I'm also going to finally check out Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

My girl is finally going to sit down and watch Terminator 2 with me tonight, since I watched The Devil Wears Prada last night - which was actually good.

Yeah, I'm really digging The Newsroom so far although it is getting mixed reactions from others. If you've ever dug Aaron Sorkin it's worth checking out and HBO has the first episode available to watch for free right here: [link]
