What would Ghostbusters 3 be without Bill Murray?

02.13.2012

One of the biggest hurdles in getting GHOSTBUSTERS 3 made has been Bill Murray. He just doesn't want to do it, and can you blame him, really? Just a couple of months ago Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd sent him the latest script, which was allegedly shredded by Murray and returned with a note that said "No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts!"

But Aykroyd has denied that this happened in an interview with Empire.

"Bill Murray is not capable of such behaviour. This is simply something that would not be in his nature. We have a deep, private personal relationship that transcends business. We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in GHOSTBUSTERS 3 has been made clear and I respect that. But Bill has too much positive estimation of my writing skills to shred the work."

But what are their options, then? Well, one of them is to recast Peter Venkman. Empire hints that there may be a "Jack Ryan"-style recasting. I can't imagine this going over well with the fanbase.

Another casting issue is of course Rick Moranis, who has been in self-imposed exile from the film industry for the last 15 years.

"If we can get the script to GHOSTBUSTERS 3 right, then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component. None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant," said Aykroyd.

More as we hear it, but I have the feeling that this project is going to keep spinning its wheels for many more years to come.

The news updates are a little excessive here. If it were up to me, I wouldn't post anything more about it until something legitimate happens (i.e. "Bill Murray officially signs on for Ghostbusters 3 and it goes into production [inert month/year here]). As far as the movie itself goes, the only thing that will interest me personally is if it is one last hurrah for the original cast. None of modern Hollywood's young hot stars (no Ashton Kutcher, no Seth Rogen, no Jonah Hill, etc). Just the

As far as the movie itself goes, the only thing that will interest me personally is if it is one last hurrah for the original cast. None of modern Hollywood's young hot stars (no Ashton Kutcher, no Seth Rogen, no Jonah Hill, etc). Just the original cast with a great plot that seamlessly blends great comedy with some slightly dark supernatural elements. I also don't want to see them "go dark" with it like so many movies seem to do. I doubt that would happen but still. Most of all, I absolutely do not want to see any "passing the torch" bullshit under any circumstances known to God. If there is a slight, tongue-in-cheek jab that they take at themselves in regards to their age (I'm talking about the characters) toward the end and a kind of half hazardly assertion is made that somebody will have to take over sometime in the future, or if it is implied in some other way, fine. No problem. At this point, the whole idea of GB3 is almost a joke though. I'm a HUGE fan of the original and love GB2 as well, but there is too much dilly dallying, beating around the bush and dragging feet. Ghostbusters without Bill Murray is farcical.

don't recast Murray!!

If the script is solid, then I wouldn't mind seeing another one. Don't recast Murray if he's not interested! If you can get him to do a cameo, then that's fine! I would love to see Moranis in it as well!

Can't we just give it a rest? Why are those involved so insistent on making a GB3? Didn't we get a videogame that was practically a 3rd GB? First of all, these guys are all old now and past the prime of their comedic careers. Trying to imitate the success of the original film is near impossible as evidenced by the second film. We're talking about a classic film that had all of these comedic actors in their prime. It worked then. I just can't see it working now. GB2 came out over 20 years ago.

Give it a rest already (I mostly blame Akroyd, but can forgive him as his career has been on the downslope for a while now). I certainly could be wrong, but the more the deal with this film gets stretched out, the more I am inclined to think that, much like the tragic Duke Nukem Forever, if this ever does get made, it just won't be any good. Call it the vaporware of cinema.

In order for this to be good, all of them must do it. The dramatic parts of the first two need to be stepped up for the 3rd, as well as the action. The comedy will come naturally, that's a given. We need to really feel for these guys as they're getting older and they need to really be needed by the city to save the people. The last hoorah. Expendable's Ghostbusters.

THEY HAD BETTER NOT. Granted Bill is being a colossal dickhead about doing this movie, but you don't recast Peter Venkman.

I discovered Ghostbusters through the cartoon, and then I saw Ghostbusters 2. I thought it was awesome. And then I saw Ghostbusters 1 last, and it was awesome too. So you guys can hate on GB2 all you want, but I discovered the franchise in reverse order and love all of it. However, that doesn't mean I have any faith in a third movie.

Wow

I find it interesting that Aykroyd says they wouldn't do the movie without Rick Moranis but they would without Bill Murray...Who the hell gives a shit about Rick Moranis anymore??? I honestly wouldn't mind a GB3 if the script was solid and had Murray, but without him this is a terrible idea...

Murray made Ghostbusters II watchable

Without Dr. Peter Venkman's involvement I don't know how this film will work or be received by audiences. Shit happens, and who ya gonna call?

Ghostbusters 2 was awesome and Bill was awesome in it. I will never ever ever ever ever understand how that movie became cool to hate in the past few years. The "FIVE YEARS LATER" at the beginning gave me chills in the theater back in '89 and the late 80s version of NYC captured by Reitman is still unsurpassed. GB2 is underrated and underappreciated and I think Bill feeds off that negative energy by the squeeky wheels that appear to bring him down. I was thankful that he at least returned for

I was thankful that he at least returned for the game, something I didn't think he'd ever do. The game is as good a GB3 as I think we're gonna get. And that's fine. It's better than nothing. No original cast, no movie.

I love Ghostbuster II. I didn't realize anyone had a problem with it for YEARS.

The hate appears to be hipster-oriented. The cast is great, Viggo is creepy, and Peter MacNicol practically redefined the "sad toadie" role.

Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one. While of course, I think the first one is better (very few sequels are actually superior to their original counterparts), I absolutely love GB2 and can't understand the hate for it either. I don't get how could somebody love the first one and then just despise the second one. I can see maybe not liking a couple things about it or a few elements here and there, but to be so vehemently against it makes no sense, because it is very similar in tone to the

I also agree with Psygote--most of the people I've heard who talk shit about GB2 in real life ARE hipsters, so there's more truth to that assertion than you may even realize lol.

I've given up hope of seeing the original cast return for Ghostbusters 3, and I think it's for the best. But in the future, I wouldn't mind a Ghostbusters: Next Generation (like Star Trek, similar idea w/ a new cast). And I say that with a lot of love for the originals. I think Ghostbusters is a great concept and it'd be a shame to have it limited to only 2 films (and an animated show).

What fucking idiot would come up with the idea of recasting Peter Venkman? Bill Nurray IS Peter Venkman, ya can't just recast it like the Hulk or Rhodes.

This story is getting SOOOO old now, if he doesn't wanna make GB3 then so be it.

Finished

Ghostbusters is done like dinner. The first one was a decent movie in the 80's, but the second GB's movie sucked, and a third one in today's day will blow chunks! Let it go fellas!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh enough. As much as I'm fine with this moving being made with or without Murray, I can't stand more updates, this is like hearing about sin city 2 every year and nothing comes to fruition. Plus, you are talking about some of the great comedy performers and writers of our time, can't they just do something original.

Meh

The biggest problem with the project for me is that it seems like everyone's hearts are in the wrong places -- I'm not part of the Bill Murray Is God fanclub nor are all his comments respectable, but when you're willing to write out a major actor from a series then you can't argue that it's "for the fans" -- and when there's talk about "passing the torch," etc., it just seems like a cash-grab.

This is on par with the idea of a Vega Brothers movie. The older these guys get, the more ridiculous the idea of a sequel becomes and there's a magical element of the perfect storm that made the original a classic and has made it impossible for these wishful thinking sequels to get off the ground.
