What would Karl Urban like to see in the Dredd sequel?

Aug. 6, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Whether a DREDD sequel will happen or not is still up in the air even though quite a few fans of the first film have been rather noisy about the topic. When it comes to star Karl Urban, he's all for it. It's nice to hear an actor so passionate about a project especially one that has such a solid fanbase rooted with the comics.

Urban wants to do right by the character when it comes to the next movie, if there is one. He shared his thoughts with IGN on what he'd like to see in the next installment:

IGN: You know, there have been rumblings about a Dredd sequel, and there's certainly an interest on the part of the fans.

Karl Urban: A Dredd sequel, the fans are screaming out for a Dredd sequel and, I would like nothing more than to be a part of it. Dredd screenwriter/producer Alex Garland wants to do it, I want to do it. Really, I guess, it's up to film financiers if they can crunch the numbers to make it work. If territories have made money in ancillary markets, because it's been a huge hit on DVD. You know people have discovered the movie after the fact, people have discovered this movie and gone, 'Wait a minute, this is really, really cool.' Unfortunately, a fundamental problem with Dredd was that at the time of its release people didn't know about it. There was no awareness of it, and ultimately that hurt the performance of the movie at the cinema. But then word of mouth got around and when it was released on DVD it sold 650 thousand copies in a week!

IGN: If there were to be a sequel, where would you like to see that character go?

Urban: Look there's many places that I'd like to see that character go. You know, I personally would like to see almost an origin story. To see how that world got the way it got. In Almost Human, there's still an optimism and a hope. We're still striving to be the best of what humanity can be. In the world of Dredd, humanity has given up. There's a dystopian vision of the future. I'd really like to see how it got that way, how the Judges came to be. To me that's interesting. There's a story, a great comic, it's Origins, and that would be the great basis for a movie. Fans are screaming out for a Dark Judges movie. That would be a great one, but you know that's a movie that's going to take a budget. If you want to do that, you want to do it right. It's much easier to go out into the desert and try and search for the origins of the Judges than to introduce Judge Death. Though again, that would be phenomenal. But you know, at the end of the day, we made Dredd as a stand-alone film and I couldn't be more proud of it. I am thrilled by the fact that it's found an audience that appreciates it. Every single day I get people asking me, 'When's there going to be a Dredd sequel?' I went to buy a bottle of wine the other day and the guy behind the counter said, 'Are you Judge Dredd? First of all, how did he recognize me? Secondly, just the fact that he's a guy at the bottle store saying 'I want to see more of that!' That's cool by me.

What are you guys looking for in the next movie? Do you think that Urban's ideas are worth exploring?

If fucking Kick-Ass can get a sequel, another Dredd should be a shoe-in.

Of course I'd be down.

One of the sleeper hits for me was Dredd. Absolutely had a blast and would love for Karl to play the role again. I signed up for the petition and hope more is made.

Please! Dredd 2!

So glad I saw this in the theaters, and in 3D, which was an awesome use of the format. Either way, great film and the best comic book movie of 2012. Yeah, I said it. But they gotta get Urban back in the helmet and bring back that hottie Olivia Thirlby. So many possibilities they could seize story wise. I'm game for whatever they choose. Consider my ticket bought.

Dredd is awesome and I like nothing more than Dredd sequel. If that wretched Grown Ups 2 can have sequel, why can't Dredd have sequel?

Money. Grown Ups made a lot of it, and Dredd suffered in the box office. No matter how bad his films may be, Adam Sandler still has a large audience, and Dredd has more of a growing cult following.

Not going to lie. Dredd 2 would interest me more than half the sequels/prequels currently in production.

Karl Urban is AWESOME.

I don't necessarily think that Dredd needs an origin story. Like everyone else, I would desperately love to see another Dredd movie starring Urban, I really dig the world they've created in the first one. I would really like to see Dredd go out into the Cursed Earth in the second one, and if we're lucky enough to get a third one, then bring on Judge Death!

I've seen Urban in lots of stuff - a lot of the time I didn't even know it was Urban (e.g. Lord of the Rings). Never not liked him - but he wasn't someone who I'd look out for either...until Dredd. He played it brilliantly - the movie gets better in my mind each time I think about it. I hope it gets a sequel. For F's sake - if Fantastic Four and Ghost Rider can get a second shot...Dredd should get one.

Incidentally, I like his views on Dredd and commercial viability of such movies - he

Incidentally, I like his views on Dredd and commercial viability of such movies - he knows his stuff...and was perhaps saying - he wants 3 movies. Part two to be an origin story ...and if that does really well ...in part because people now know how good part 1 was.... they'd get a bigger budget to do a third movie... the dark judges. Well, that's how I read it.

Dredd was an awesome movie and it's a damn shame that it didn't get recognized, mainly due to its foreign funding and backing. I'm glad I went to see it in the cinema because at least I know that I paid for a good movie and did, in whatever minimal way, something to help the movie have a the slightest option of making a sequel.

Day in the life of Dredd

I love Dredd. I love that it's a stand alone pic too, because it manages to condense all its world building to one story that's basically "a day in the life of Dredd."

I hope whatever story they do for a sequel, if we're lucky it happens, it handled in a similar fashion. Personally I wouldn't want an origins, but another day in the life that manages to bring in some major elements from the comics would be perfect to me.

In the sequel, I'd love to see them expand the world. Keeping the story within the confines of the Peach Trees apartment complex did give it a sense of claustrophobia and was a cost-efficient use of the Die Hard formula but for future films, I do want to see more of the Mega City One cityscape and see Dredd and Anderson in action in more varied locales.

I'm surprised a production company hasn't picked this up yet to at least see where the script would take the sequel.

The one thing I find most respectable about Dredd is that Urban wasn't afraid to wear the mask...ALL THE TIME. (minus sillouette shot but you get the idea) You can get seriously drunk every time Spider-man took his mask off.
Honesty, with a bigger budget and more room to work with, a Dredd Sequel or Origins story would kick major ass.

I think that a talented team and screenwriter could fit bits of the origin and Judge Death into 1 film. Its all or nothing at this point...either way I'm there opening night.

ALWAYS BE DOWN FOR MORE DREDD

Ever since the Stallone version came out I've wanted more DREDD. The anti-hero/hero treatment done right is always cool. Just like the Riddick franchise, DREDD could, should and most likely would be a success if done right and given proper promotion that DREDD did not. Nor did John Carter and I'm still pissed about how that film was handled and cool that franchise would have been since Edgar Rice Borroughs' books are very cool but I digress. Nor did John Carter and I'm still pissed about how that film was handled and cool that franchise would have been since Edgar Rice Borroughs' books are very cool but I digress. And speaking of Riddick, Karl Urban's Vago was a great minor character. Matter of fact it sucks all to hell that DREDD didn't do and should've done better because Urban is a secret weapon actor. Every one of his roles has stood out in whatever film he's been in, RED, LOTR, DOOM and so on. He deserved better treatment than he received and so does DREDD. So, yes, whether it's a prequel/origin film which would be cool or a street judge action blow them all to hell kind of film, I'm there. DREDD was a very good film and it's good to know that word of mouth carried it to DVD much like another Urban film, RED. If PACIFIC RIM, which didn't do so well here in the states is getting the sequel treatment because of overseas box office, then give DREDD and Urban their due. C"MON HOLLYWOOD pull your head out of your ass and quite screwing over good movies, good franchises and damn good actors with shitty promotion.

I think an 'origin' story can work without treating it like a prequel. I'm intrigued with the Scorched Earth outside Mega City One and I want to find out whether by chance or by resilience alone pockets of humanity still exist there which may give clues to how the world became such a desolate place. I love the fan made short about the old Judge who took the long walk as his 'retirement', forgot the title. Show more of the city official's corruption, etc. As much as I liked the first movie with

Then again the whole cause of the dystopian future could be blamed on the dark judges. Yeah there is potential there for a great movie but the studios are just not interested after it didn't make billions in the box office.

Forgot Urban playing Batman. The only character I want him seeing with a mask or helmet on is Judge Dredd. He IS the perfect Dredd and I would love to see him don the helmet again in a sequel.

Both ideas sound awesome but it would be even more awesome if Rob Schneider were to reprise his role.

HAHA NICE, made me laugh. I watched the original the other week for the first time since it originally hit DVD and man it was pretty bad. Armand trying to chew up every bit of scenery possible was way over the top and Schneider, about 75% too much Schneider. As much as I like Stallone and a high percentage of his work - he was so not right for this role.

A lack of Rob Schneider is the exact reason why I think the movie underperformed in cinemas.

Seriously, who doesn't want to see "Rob Schneider IS... The Gronk!" on a poster?
