What’s at Cannes?

So far the only sure things we know about for the Cannes Film Festival are INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS and UP; two extremely different films. The official announcement of this year’s lineup won’t be made until April 23rd but a bunch of films are coming forward as major contenders and we’re getting a clearer picture of what the lineup will look like.

Ang Lee’s TAKING WOODSTOCK looks to be a lock as Cannes organizers screened a print of the film earlier this week. The fest is also looking at the BAD LIEUTENANT remake starring Nicolas Cage, Francis Ford Coppola’s TETRO and THE IMAGINATION OF DR. PARNASSUS, which features Heath Ledger in his final role.

Perhaps more surprising is Variety’s assertion that DRAG ME TO HELL is “an almost certain” bet for a special midnight screening. American horror films usually don’t get invited to Cannes so that would be a big coup for Universal and a great way to launch Sam Raimi’s return to horror.

Stay tuned next week as the official Cannes lineup is revealed. Certainly looks like it could be a lot of fun this year…
