What's in a Title?

09.24.2008

The release of LAKEVIEW TERRACE, a film whose title can be construed as misleading to say the least (is this a period piece?) prompted the folks over at EW to compile their list of the most misleading movie title of 2008. That list spawned another list, this time examining the best movie titles of all time. Although I don't agree with everything the lister has to say, his arguments are definitely compelling. All this ponitificating over the worth of movie titles may seem trivial to some, but we here take our movies seriously, and a film's title can never be ignored. So I figure I might as well unleash the Schmoes into this debate, as it rages in into the new year. So tell me Schmoes...what is the best and worst movie title of all time?
Extra Tidbit: Some still argue that THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION's title prevented it from being a box office smash.

What's eating gilbert grape? and the darjeeling limited, i thought were great titles and worst title i always felt went to a few good men just because of the jokes it would spawn which were unnecessary for such a kickass dramatic movie

Worst: Disaster Movie - even though the title fit the movie, and it's entire series of pop culter spoofs, I just shudder and sometimes gag at the sound of it. Bu hey, it gets Carmen Electra some semblance of an acting gig. She should just go back to Playboy.

Best: The Assassination of Jesse james by the Coward Robert Ford. I also love the movie itself.

Best: I always thought "Good Will Hunting" was one of the best titles out there.

Worst: "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" Thanks for ruining the ending. And like the movie, its too long.

PAN'S LABYRINTH....

....because I couldn't figure out who the f**k Pan was even after the movie ended. It was only afterwards that I got to know that it meant 'faun' or something. But maybe that's just me. Oh, and Snakes On A Plane was probably worst and best at the same time! Worst because it always seemed to me like a thriller movie about some underground mob / gang / mafia group hijacking a plane....which it wasn't...and that makes it the best movie title because that's all there is to the movie. Snakes on a

That EW "list" was lame. It was only 4 titles and they weren't all that creative.

I liked "Iron Man" because it was about Iron Man and they called it "Iron Man".

If they'd called it "Whispers in Autumn" I think it would've hurt ticket sales.

HMMMMM

Well prison movies don't sell that great unless the star is huge. In '95 Freeman and Robbins still weren't popular material.
Again 'Last Castle' was a terrible name for a movie.
