Whew! Johnny Depp and The Lone Ranger will fight werewolves after all!

Oct. 12, 2011by: Mike Sampson

I know you were really worried when it was reported that Disney had pulled the plug on THE LONE RANGER. I mean who doesn't want another bloated, expensive, character reboot? But rest easy movie fans - Disney is set to give a trimmed down LONE RANGER a greenlight this week with filming set to take place early in 2012.

Stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer will still be returning to star as Tonto and the Lone Ranger, respectively, and Gore Verbinski and Jerry Bruckheimer will still be directing and producing. All have agreed to take some sort of salary cut (whether it be on the front or back-end) and the budget has been slashed from about $260 million to $215 million.

Unfortunately during this entire affair, it doesn't look like anyone involved spent a whole lot of time creatively retooling the film. There have been a lot of meetings about numbers and budgets but did anyone really take a long, hard look at the script? You know, the one with werewolves and shapeshifters? Seems to me you could probably make a LONE RANGER movie for about $75 million if you take out those elements that no one really wants anyway...

Depp just wrapped DARK SHADOWS with Tim Burton and THE LONE RANGER should be his next filming project.

Guys, aren't we nerds? It's the Lone Ranger fighting wendigo/werewolf things. This idea is the kind of thing we should be behind.

Cynicism doesn't have to be the first response. I would love to see a freaking chase through a canyon with werewolves tackling horses and Lone Ranger/Tonto escaping by the skin of their nuts.

It's better than some lameass gang of horse thieves or another dusty prairie lass fighting for the rights to her daddy's farm.

So the cowboy w/ silver bullets tangles w/ werewolves? Wow, there are some geniuses in Hollywood. Maybe they're cooking up a good Paul Bunyon vs the 800 foot tree script as we speak.

hmmmmnnn...

okay, as has been previously stated, The werewolf/shapeshifter idea can work, as it is a heavy part of Native American lore, but The Lone Ranger IS NOT a supernatural character. It can work if you have a gang posing as werewolves in an effort to use superstition as part of a plan, kind of like the village but not sucking. If this goes mask of zorro, it will be fine, if it goes Wild Wild West I will personally pee on everyone involved, this means you too sparrow and winkelvoss

Werewovles

I love the werewolf idea, it makes sense more than people think being that it is part of Native American lore. Quit being anal people.

The Curse of the Black Pearl was going to be a major turd wasn't it? That turned out excellent to the surprise of many (if not most).

Let's hope this movie turns out more like that and less like At World's End. Besides, Gore Verbinski has great instincts for creatures, effects, and design, so I'm curious what he's got cooking over at Disney. If I was a big Lone Ranger fan I'd probably be aghast, but I'm not, so...whatever.
