Which Academy Award winning actor is attached to play Spawn in the upcoming reboot?

Feb. 15, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Interesting news comes to us from MTV Geek today in the way of the SPAWN reboot.

The network blog caught up with creator Todd McFarlane at Toy Fair 2013 to discuss the upcoming film. McFarlane says that there is an Academy Award winning actor just waiting to get a script on the project:

I continue to write a page here and there weve got a guy waiting in the sidelines whos an Academy Award winning actor who phones every three weeks going Todd, wheres the script? Wheres the script?"

Of course, McFarlane won't tell who it is, even though we can pretty much narrow it down ourselves.

He came out to the office, he gave me his pitch, I gave him my pitch and he was like Huh? Fine, lets do your gig and the pitch I gave him was that we could then do ten of these for the next ten years and he didnt have to be 22 for the rest of his life.

From that we can assume that whomever it is, is an actor who is concerned about aging with the series. Does that mean he's a younger actor? Here's the list of possibilities within the correct age range: Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, and Cuba Gooding Jr. Who can we cross out? I'm going to say everyone but Cuba Gooding Jr. That was almost too easy...

Although the movie may be coming along slowly (which is good), a new animated series seems to be going full steam:

The plan would be to do the movie, bring the movie out and then go back on TV with the animation like we did the first time weve got 90 minutes all set, ready to go, other than just sending it to an animation house. Weve done all the voice recordings, weve done all the backgrounds

SPAWN was one of my first comic loves as a kiddo. One of the best gifts I ever received was the HBO animated series box set. So yes, the film that came out back in 1997 was a complete letdown. But it also exposed me to the awesomeness that is Michael Jai White. I think it deserves a good movie. Will this be it? I can't say.

pretty obvious to me

when i read this article, the first actor i though of was jamie foxx. it's 100% jamie foxx. will smith didn't win an oscar i don't think. denzel is too old for this and direct to video cuba is not putting asses in the seats. it's no doubt jamie foxx.

Don't hold your breath

McFarlane has been talking out of his ass about another Spawn movie for the last 12 years. I'll believe it when I see it.

I was a huge fan of the comics, started collecting at Issue 1 and it's the only comic I still collect regularly. Saw Spawn again recently and was surprised how BADLY it has held up over the years. It really is a terrible movie, with its only consistency being the lamentably bad effects and terrible acting throughout. Perhaps they can do it justice with some kind of a remake but I am not holding my breath.

Wait, does he specifically SAY that the actor is even FOR the Simmons/Spawn role? My hope is that it's Christoph Waltz for Billy Kincaid. But that's me...

I think Michael Jai White could have made a brilliant Spawn, if the movie that surrounded him wasn't so laughably silly.

African-American actor? Check.
Academy Award winner? Check.

Congratulations to Whoopi Goldberg! You're the new Spawn! =D

Todd has been saying this for years. His Sam and Twitch movie and another Spawn. I'll believe it when I see it. Btw, is it odd that Michael Jai White would still be perfect for this. He's a better actor these days and a better script would suit him well.

It would probably remind us of that trainwreck though.

Yep. We've been asking you the same question of where the script is too, Mr. McFarlane. Because you've been saying about the new movie/remake/sequel every few months or so.

Sorry, but Mc Farlance is coming up with stuff about his "big movie project" every 2 years or so. So far its been all talk and hot air.

Either Idris Elba or Chiwetel Ejiofor would be perfect. I still want Idris Elba to play Black Panther though.

Just a reminder...

This is not an endorsement of Cuba Gooding Jr. (The man responsible for the movie Boat Trip), but technically he is an Oscar winner, and Will Smith isn't. I will repeat, Will Smith: 0 Oscars, Cuba "Snow Dogs" Gooding Jr.: 1 Oscar. Just a friendly reminder since Will Smith's name was thrown in with other Oscar winners in the article. Idris Elba would be amazing for the part though. Or Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Cuba Gooding isn't a good match for Spawn. I'm with ElderPredator. Idris Elba f*cking needs to take this!

I would have added those actors, but McFarlane said "award winning" not just nominated. Whitaker won, but he's a little too old for the part.

Yet another role that would be perfect for Idris Elba. I'd be fucking thrilled to see a SPAWN reboot, I grew up on the comics.
